hen it comes to communication, what you say is only part of the story. Your body language tells the rest. Whether it’s your posture, where you place your hands, or if you make eye contact with the person you’re speaking to, it all serves to complete the communication picture. These nonverbal cues can be very useful when trying to convey a message to someone else. But they can also become a hindrance if they aren’t in agreement with what you’re saying. So how can you be sure that what your body is communicating to someone else is what you actually want it to communicate? And can you use someone else’s body language to read what they’re thinking or feeling in a certain situation? Snippetz decided to take a look at some of the

If you’re a parent to a teenager, you probably know that, while they may not be the greatest at verbally communicating with you, their nonverbal communication skills are top-notch. Rolling eyes, crossed arms and lack of eye contact are all classic signs of anger, frustration and annoyance. The negativity practically radiates off them. And while YOU may not roll your eyes at someone, they may be picking up on a negative vibe based on some of your other nonverbal cues. In some instances, this may not matter much to you; but what if you’re giving off a negative vibe when you are interviewing for a job or on a first date? At those times, it could be pretty detrimental to have your body language say something you don’t want it to say.
WHAT IS BODY LANGUAGE?
Moments in Time... 11 Strange But True... 13 “One Nick Snips by Nick Yanez... 14 CLASSIFIED - PAGE 5
While it seems pretty obvious, body language is actually more than just how you stand or where you put your hands. It has to do with your tone of voice when you talk, the gestures you make, the way your skin flushes at a certain topic or how your pupils dilate based on who you’re talking to. Knowing how to interpret those signs can help you understand more about what’s going on in someone’s mind, whether they’re lying to you or trying to hide something from you, or whether they’re genuinely interested in what you’re saying.

Here are some classic examples of body language signs that are often seen as negative: • Arms crossed in front of your chest – some people may do this because they’re cold or because they feel uncomfortable in a situation. But studies have shown that crossing your arms in front of your chest gives the impression that you are disagreeable or even hostile.
The biggest thing to remember when trying to read someone’s body language is that every person has their own way of talking. Some people naturally talk fast and that doesn’t necessarily indicate deception on their part. Others may be unable to stand still but not because they are anxious or impatient.

The key to interpreting body language signs is to consider the context of the conversation like where you are physically and the subject matter you’re speaking about. And remember: everyone is different so what may be the case for one person might not be the case for another.

But if you’re speaking with someone who doesn’t react to what you’re saying by changing their facial expression, it gives the impression that what you’re saying has “fallen on deaf ears.â€? • Body is physically turned away from you – people tend to engage each other by facing each other, which makes sense since we get our cues about other people not only in what is being said but

But in general, if a person won’t look you in the eye or does for only small bits of time here and there during a conversation, that can be interpreted as a sign of dishonesty, anger, annoyance or irritation.

it can mean they have a real interest in what you’re saying.
how it’s being said. A slight (or perhaps not-so-slight) “turned away” appearance gives off a negative impression that might be unintentional.
• Leaning forward – leaning closer to a person in a conversation is usually a sign that they are interested in you or what you’re saying. Often, people who are more comfortable with each other will stand closer together but this phenomenon is different across cultures.
POSITIVE BODY LANGUAGE Have you ever been in the presence of a really good salesperson, someone who could sell a refrigerator to an Eskimo? If you have, then it’s likely that you’ve been treated to a display of some pretty strong positive body language, whether you knew it or not. Positive body language has the ability to influence us in ways we sometimes don’t even realize, like when that really good salesperson persuaded you to buy a two-door sports car when you really needed a minivan to transport your growing family. It can make us seem more likeable, trustworthy, fun and happy. Here are some classic examples of some body language signs that are often seen as positive: • Not crossing your arms – since crossing your arms can be seen negatively, it stands to reason that not crossing them is a sign of openness and confidence, both of which are more positive impressions. • Mirroring – if you’re talking to someone and they begin to mimic your body language, it is often a sign that they are trying to build a rapport with you and genuinely like you. (Beware: this is an easy form of body language to fake and can be used against you to gain your trust prematurely.) • Exaggerated gestures – when someone talks emphatically with their hands, it often means they are passionate about what they are talking about. If they respond to you with these types of gestures,
• Maintains good eye contact – when someone looks into your eyes while talking or listening, it’s usually seen as a positive thing. Looking away while contemplating an answer is also good but can be a sign of deception if their eyes are darting all over the place, like they’re trying to make up a lie on the spot.

TRANSMITTERS OF LIFE

hen we have experiences, especially in childhood, it creates imprints or reactions in our mind. Our mind remembers everything. It is simply that our mind may place certain events in the subconscious rather than the conscious mind. Our mind becomes programmed, on a conscious or subconscious level, to continue to experience what was already experienced in childhood. For example, if a child experienced much unconditional love, nurturing, bonding, freedom of expression, and joy, then that child would naturally expect those energies to continue. That is because those loving and nurturing experiences created an imprint or transmitters in the brain and mind to expect the same to continue.
A Tai Yi treatment titled Transmitters of Life can assist with this. This treatment is for clearing of transmitters. When a person had an unhappy childhood, it programs the transmitters and sends signals to keep the pain intact. Some transmitters carry fear, anger, and death. This assists in clearing the program so the transmitters are sending correct (that life can be full of joy)
However, what if a child experienced loss, lack of bonding, abuse, anger, addiction, or severe punishment? Then that child would also expect that type of energy to continue. Those experiences create certain transmitters in the brain that keep those energies/experiences in place consciously or subconsciously. Then the person makes choices to keep anger, addiction, punishment, and lack of bonding in place. The person continues to experience pain.
information. It also increases messages from the mind to the brain more clearly and from higher mind back to the mind field. The person can expect to feel more clarity on how to make different choices that will create a sense of peace and joy. The person can also expect to feel lighter and more focused on what he or she wants to do in life. For additional information, please contact: Tami Urbanek of Empowerment Through Healing 719•488•2290

Another scenario is a child who did not have a particularly painful childhood, but perhaps the child did not really bond with his or her parents. Maybe the child experienced punishment (judgmental) rather than consequences (non-judgmental) and developed beliefs that life is just one pathway and is not full of passion and joy. I
f you’re still wary of using computer technology because of the complications, or if you use the computer at the library because the cost keeps you from having your own, AARP has good news for you -- the RealPad tablet, specifically designed for seniors. Here are a few things that make the RealPad good for hesitant seniors: There’s an intuitive interface to help you send email and photos, browse the Internet and even have video chats. It comes already loaded with apps (applications, or programs) and tutorial videos on how to use the touch screen, browse the Internet and set up a video call or email. The RealQuick Fix feature has one button that helps you view the status of your tablet and identify what might be wrong (for example, if your WiFi goes out) and fix it with one click.
ACQUIRE CONFIDENCE PART 13:
HOW YOU DEFINE YOURSELF MAKES A DIFFERENCE By Ron Ross
“I’m just the b****** son of an L.A. whore.â€? The comment startled me as I conversed with a handsome gentleman before church began. His definition of himself makes clear my assertion that how you define yourself makes a difference. The easiest way adults define themselves is by their profession or trade. “I’m a truck driver,â€? or “I’m a dentist,â€? or “I’m a housewife,â€? or “I’m just a lowly clerk.â€? Another way people define themselves is by their physical characteristics: color of skin, height, weight, hair color, age, etc. Some define themselves by their economic status: “I’m from the wrong side of the tracks,â€? or “We live in the Worthington Estates,â€? or “I haven’t made more than $25,000 in any one year of my life,â€? or “I’m unemployed.â€? Social status is yet another way people like to define themselves. “I’m the wife of‌.â€? or “I serve on the board,â€? or “We just got back from Europe,â€? or “I’m from the hood.â€? Other characteristics can be used to define self such as political party, religion, national origin, hobbies, sports affiliations, ways of

Here are some of the things that stand out on the list of specifications: • powered by an Intel Atom processor, which means it’s fast. • a 7.85-inch touch screen • WiFi (You’ll need WiFi in your home, or use a free one in stores, libraries and many other places.) • front- and rear-facing cameras (front for your video chats and rear for your own photos) • 16 gigabytes of storage • built-in speakers RealPad was available to pre-order early in September, and it will be in Walmart stores in mid-October. you want to make. In the process you will succeed and fail, laugh and cry, hope and despair, and experience the wonder of a life filled with trial and error, but also with meaning and purpose. Your goal is to keep the parts of your identity you like and get rid of your bad habits, false identities, and destructive character traits that hold you back. Perhaps the most important self-identifying characteristic we all should have is, “I am a
acting and thinking, and more. There are two categories of terminology we use to define ourselves: Temporary/ trivial terms and eternal /exceptional terms. Here is a fun way to define your-self: Take a sheet of paper and on the top write “Me DeďŹ ned!â€? Then draw a line down the middle of the sheet and write “Temporary/ Trivial Meâ€? on one side, and on the other side write “Eternal/Exceptional Me.â€? Take some thoughtful time to make your list. Once you are done, add one more category to the “Temporary/Trivial Meâ€? side. Call this category, “I used to be‌â€?. Then list everything you used to be; include things from your childhood such as “babysitterâ€? or “Boy Scout.â€? Notice most things that define you are temporary and trivial and only a few items are eternal and exceptional. What does this mean? It means that you are a work in progress. Except in a few categories, you cannot define yourself once and that’s it for the rest of your life. How you define yourself in the 7th grade is dramatically different from the person you evolved into by the age of 20. But the evolution does not end there. I’m over 70-years-old and still evolving, still wondering what or who I will be next year compared to what or who I am today. Your identity is an ongoing growth process. Don’t be afraid to reframe, reorder or rebuild your deďŹ nition as you mature. Do not concern yourself so much with who you are in this moment of time, but focus more on who you want to be and what difference

of OJ is left out for even five minutes, it swells up, apparently due to some pretty volatile organic compounds. I’ve learned through the years that Mom was usually right. Was she right again? -- M.E.K.
WHY IS TRAVELING SO TIRESOME? DEAR DR. ROACH: Traveling for a length of time -- say, six hours or more -on a train, bus or plane makes me rather tired. Others I discussed this with have had similar experiences. I find this strange, because for most of the travel time I am sitting doing nothing but reading or daydreaming. My question is: Do physiological changes taking place in the body brought on by the long period of sitting while in transit account for the fatigue, or is it simply mental boredom? -- R.S. ANSWER: I think it’s both mental and physical. Prolonged sitting recently has been shown to put people at increased risk for heart disease, as well as the known risk of blood clots. Getting up and walking around is always a good idea physically, and might help mentally as well. More than simple tiredness, chronic fatigue syndrome is all-encompassing. The booklet on it explains the illness and its treatment. To obtain a copy, write: Dr. Roach -- No. 304W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 328536475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Orange juice was a staple for breakfast when we were growing up. Mom would say, “Hurry up and drink your orange juice before it loses its vitamins.” I’ve noticed that when a carton
ANSWER: Mom was partially right. Orange juice will lose its vitamins over time, especially if it gets warm. But that doesn’t happen in five minutes. Products that sit on the shelf for a long time lose their vitamins. As a student in organic chemistry, I did an experiment to find how much vitamin C was in certain products. Fresh fruits and vegetables (especially red bell peppers) had a great deal. A canned juice purportedly high in C had none at all. Even vitamin C tablets had lost 20 percent of their stated value even before their expiration date. Orange juice containers will swell if bacteria in the juice release gas, at which point it should (obviously) be discarded. However, I wonder if the swelling in five minutes has to do with the air in the carton expanding due to the relative warmth of the air compared with the refrigerator. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I keep getting little black splinters under my fingernails that disappear on their own. I also have little black splinters under both of my big toenails that have not disappeared and have been there for a while. What is this? -D.F. ANSWER: These sounds like splinter hemorrhages. The most common cause of these is trauma to the nail bed, but some dermatologic conditions can cause this as well, such as psoriasis and lichen planus. However, the most worrisome (but unusual) condition is infective endocarditis, an infection of the heart valves. Any fever or fatigue should be promptly evaluated by an internist.

• On Oct. 4, 1937, legendary blues singer Bessie Smith is buried near Philadelphia. Smith was killed a few days earlier when the old Packard she was driving hit a parked truck near Coahoma, Mississippi. In 1923, Smith had released her ďŹ rst record, “Down-Hearted Blues.â€? • On Sept. 30, 1949, after 15 months and more than 250,000 flights, the Berlin Airlift officially comes to an end. The daily airlift supplied tons of food and other goods. Without firing a shot, the Americans foiled the Soviet plan to hold West Berlin hostage. • On Sept. 29, 1954, Willie Mays, centerfielder for the New York Giants, makes an amazing over-the-shoulder catch of a fly ball hit by Cleveland Indians first baseman Vic Wertz to rob Wertz of extra bases in Game 1 of the 1954 World Series. The catch has gone down as one of the greatest in baseball history.

Carson went on to host “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carsonâ€? for three decades, handing over the reins to Jay Leno in 1992. • On Oct. 2, 1971, “Maggie Mayâ€? becomes Rod Stewart’s first No. 1 hit and tops the U.K. and U.S. pop charts simultaneously. “Maggie Mayâ€? was a last-minute addition to the album “Every Picture Tells a Storyâ€? and was originally released as the “Bâ€? side to the single “Reason to Believe.â€? • On Oct. 3, 1981, a hunger strike by Irish nationalists at the Maze Prison in Belfast in Northern Ireland is called off after seven months and 10 deaths. In the aftermath of the strike, British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher agreed to give in to several of the protesters’ demands, including the right to wear civilian clothing. • On Oct. 5, 1990, “Henry & June,â€? starring Uma Thurman, Fred Ward and Maria de Medeiros, opens in theaters as the first film with an NC-17 rating. A month earlier, the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) had debuted NC-17 (No One Under 17 Admitted) as a replacement for the X rating. c) 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

Hayes was actually a trainer rather than a jockey, and he was riding a 20-1 underdog named Sweet Kiss. For the rest of her life, the horse he rode was nicknamed “Sweet Kiss of Death.”

The state name comes from the Aleut word “alaxsxaq,” which in turn comes from the Russian meaning “the object toward which the action of the sea is directed.” • Those who study such things say that even fish can have distinct personalities. Within a single species, scientists have observed that some fish are quite adventurous, willing to go to great lengths to obtain food or a mate, while others are much more timid, eschewing daring feats altogether. *** Thought for the Day: “If a man does his best, what else is there?” -- General George S. There are two obvious factors that play into this. The first one is that men and women are getting married later in life. Working hard and getting a better education are highly touted in the 21st century. It’s usually recommended for young adults to focus on their career before a relationship. That is often advice coming from parents, teachers, mentors, etc. The other major factor is likely a higher divorce rate than ever before. But we won’t go there, because this isn’t an internet blog (but shouldn’t it be??).
H
ave you ever encountered someone who always claims to “need their space”? I mean sure we’ve all been in situations where frustration or stress encourages us to spend some time to think and breath, but I’m talking about folks who need it routinely. They can’t properly function in the company of others; true introverts. There are even those who would prefer to live life alone – never get married, have kids, or even live with a friend. And it’s not as taboo as one might think. Heck, one might say our culture is leading down a path where those very beliefs become commonplace. The proof is in the pudding (or in this case, a poll conducted by Bloomberg). A new study recently revealed that more American’s are single than at any recorded time in history. Of course that’s evident with there now being over 7-billion people in the world, but I’m talking about percentages here. There is a higher rate, per capita, of single people than ever before. Actually, for

the first time, it’s over half! 50.2% of adults are now single in our country. They’ve only been taking these surveys since 1974, but I think it’s safe to assume once you go back into the early 1900’s – the percentages of married adults skyrockets the further back you travel.

I think what would be extremely telling about this statistic would be the reaction of those reading it. Imagine seeing thousands of people hearing the news that there are more single adults than at any other time in our nation’s history. I’d bet all of my blue balloons that many young people would smile, say that it’s a “good thing”, and be on their way. The ideology that pulses through the bloodstream of America’s youth is largely centered on individualism and self-empowerment; neither one of those themes plays well into a long-term, committed relationship. And why should it? As a young person is a struggling economy where Master’s Degrees no longer guarantee middle-class jobs, shouldn’t you try to get your finances together before thinking about taking care of a family? And shouldn’t young people be encouraged to follow their dreams and be confident in who they are? Maybe indi-

vidualism isn’t so bad. On the other side of the spectrum you could watch a happily married couple, hitting the half-century mark on their marriage, read the aforementioned statistic with disgust and dismay. “What is happening these days?” they’ll ponder. They’ll sing praises about the sanctity of marriage and the importance of sharing a life. They’ll swear that their lover and offspring are their entire purpose for living; their legacy. Shouldn’t we effect the lives of others by drawing close to them? Shouldn’t we teach, learn, and build a community? Heck, most great stories of fiction, the ones that truly move and inspire us, are based around what these very people preach – finding true, unconditional love. It’s where so many will find genuine happiness. But that’s just the thing. What is it that makes us happy?
14
The truth is, it’s different for everyone. Civilization has a way of creating and controlling social trends. Right now, the trend is to live for yourself. Sure significant others can make us feel good and important, but can one person really be the entire meaning of our lives? Can just one person make us feel loved forever? Can we love them forever? Honestly? These are the questions a majority of Americans are asking themselves. I can’t answer them for you, only you can. The problem is, you’ll need someone else to help you solve the riddle. Oh, the cruel irony.

LIVING GOD’S GIFTS bringing Christ into your financial life
INVESTING FROM A BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVE
by Chuck Maher, CFP®
...BRING CHRIST INTO OUR FINANCIAL LIVES
A CHECKUP
A
s we enter into the final months of 2014, now would be a great time for a financial checkup. By now you should have a pretty good feel of how the year is playing out. Here are a few items that you may want to consider to make sure you’re financially on track.
WHERE’S THE DEBT Unfortunately, for too many of us, debt is one of our biggest expenses. Too often we push our debt obligations aside, paying the minimum balance and hoping it will go away. For too many it not only is not going away, it is increasing. Where does your debt stand? Do you have a plan for paying it down? A good goal is to have all of your debt, excluding your mortgage, paid off within the next five years. Talk show host, Dave Ramsey, promotes the snowball effect, where one makes the minimum payment on all obligations and applies any extra money to the loan with the lowest balance. When that loan is paid off those payments are compounded with the minimum payment to the next largest debt creating a snowball effect. Whatever plan you use to get rid of debt stick to it; debt is cheating you out of so much life.
IS SPENDING ON TRACK Hopefully at the beginning of the year you created a spending plan. A plan that recognizes the income you will be bringing in and the decisions you have made on how to spend it. If you are like many your intentions were set aside as life got in the way. Now’s a good time to brush off that plan and see how things are going. Are you on track? Has your income changed? Have expenses stayed in line? Were there any large unplanned expenses? Make the time to review your plan, make the necessary changes and get on track. A well thought out spending plan puts you in control of your money.
SAVING VS. INVESTING I’m finding that many families are sav-
ing faithfully. However too many are just hoarding cash as opposed to saving and investing with purpose. Given the past turmoils that we have seen in the marketplace, that is understandable. Unfortunately stockpiling cash because of fear of risk is short term thinking and can limit your long-term success. A better approach is to save for those short-term needs and emergencies and select long-term investments that support your goals. We live in the greatest country in the greatest time in history. For the wise investor the opportunities are limitless. Sadly, no investment, including cash, comes without risk. By balancing your attitude towards risk with your long-term objectives it becomes easier to select investments that support what it is you want out of life.
THE FINANCIAL PLAN A sound financial plan is critical to one’s financial success. Of course you would expect me to say that, I am, after all, a financial planner. A good financial plan takes into account your current financial situation (balance sheet and spending plan), recognizes the everyday risks that you face (insurance planning), defines the investments that will need to be made to achieve your goals (portfolio management), the tax consequences of those decisions (tax planning) and includes a plan for distribution of those assets (estate planning). If you have a financial plan, review it, evaluate where you are and make the necessary changes. If you don’t and you don’t know where to start, I would encourage you to meet with a financial planner who can help you put together a plan based upon what it is you want out of life.

ready have and recognize what it is we truly want out of life.” I penned those words in the early 2000’s as the tech bubble exploded and the markets collapsed. I believe them now today more than ever. For those who plan and are diligent, success is very possible. Make the time for a checkup. “Remember, where your treasure is, there your heart is also.” Matthew 6:21
A VISIT WITH YOUR ADVISORS Whether you’re working with a financial planner, and I hope you are, a banker, insurance agent, stockbroker or whoever, make the time to visit with them. Have them explain to you what you own, how it is meeting your needs and what changes, if any, need to be made. Make sure that they understand your goals and objectives and what success looks like for you. As you work your way through your financial checkup, seek their advice. After all, you’re paying for it – use their knowledge and experience. “Financial success is achievable even in these volatile times if we will make the time to appreciate what it is we al-
