he landscape of our gorgeous state is dramatically different now than it was millions of years ago. We take for granted that Pikes Peak is right outside our windows or that Garden of the Gods is just a short drive away. But that wasn’t always the case. Back in the day, when dinosaurs roamed the earth (and even earlier), Colorado was nearly unrecognizable. The ocean wasn’t hundreds of miles away; if you had lived in Colorado back then, you could’ve enjoyed beachfront property instead of forests or plains. The state endured ice ages (yes, more than one), encroaching and

Colorado’s Prehistory... Continued from Page 1
When the tectonic plates beneath the earth’s crust began to move and shift, these rocks were forced upward and created the Ancestral Rocky Mountains about 300 million years ago. These uplifted areas looked like two mountainous islands, known as Frontrangia and Uncompahgria, which were located in the area of the present-day Front Range and San Juan Mountains.
receding oceans, and volcanic eruptions, not to mention huge movements of the tectonic plates beneath the earth’s surface. Snippetz decided to travel back through time, to prehistoric Colorado to see how the region looked and what marvels were to be found.
But those are not the Rocky Mountains that we see today. About 150-250 million years ago, the tectonic plates begin to shift again and the Ancestral Rocky Mountains began to sink back into the earth. The mountain range struggled to re-emerge about 68 million years ago but erosion ate everything away.
Colorado has a rich prehistoric past; so much so that it would be difficult to adequately describe everything that happened to bring about our favorite landmarks or to detail the lives of the variety of animals that roamed the land. Instead, we’ve picked out a few of the most important and interesting features that make our state so marvelous.
Finally, about 10 million years ago, the mountains began to rise again. Between 11,000 and 16,000 years ago, during the Ice Age Summer of the Pleistocene period, glaciers that had formed began to melt and literally cut away the weaker sediments and shaped the mountain range into the Rockies we see today. The strong granite that was forced to the surface during the formation of the Ancestral Rockies can still be found in the mountain range today, especially in Colorado. It’s called Pikes Peak gran-
THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS During the Paleozoic period, western North America was submerged beneath a shallow sea. The sea deposited many miles of limestone and dolomite on the surface of the earth in that area. At the core of the continent is Precambrian metamorphic rock and Precambrian sedimentary argillite.

ite and is identifiable by its unique pink color, which is due to the high amount of potassium feldspar in it. This Ice Age Summer made for suitable conditions for mastodon, mammoth, giant sloths, bison antiquus and other prehistoric animals to live in the area. Immediately following this period, humans ventured onto the continent and began to make their way into the Colorado area. Mountain building like that which created the Rocky Mountains is typically found only about 200 to 400 miles inland from a subduction zone’s boundary. A subduction zone is an area where an oceanic plate has slipped below another plate. Usually, the oceanic plate sinks at a fairly steep angle, causing the mountains to be built fairly close to the edge of that plate. In the case of the Rocky Mountains, geologists believe the oceanic plate sank at a shallow angle, causing the mountains to be built much further inland than normal. They also believe this is why the Rockies are so broad and high.

Colorado’s Prehistory... Continued from Page 2
GARDEN OF THE GODS As with the Rocky Mountains, the Garden of the Gods was formed during a period of geological movement and upheaval millions of years ago along a natural fault line. The massive rocks that jut from the ground were originally deposited as beds of deep red, pink and white sandstones, mixtures of sedimentary rocks and limestone. When the plates beneath the surface of the earth began to shift in this area, the deposits broke into chunks and were thrust upward, where they remained. Erosion and the melting of glaciers formed during the Pleistocene Ice Age have created the formations that we enjoy today.
The sea began to recede from the area sometime during the Silurian and early Devonian periods but returned during the Carboniferous period, although some portions of the state managed to stay dry. During the Permian period, the sea withdrew yet again, and left behind fields of sand dunes, inside which fossils of footprints from ancient insects and reptiles were preserved. This pattern of recession and encroachment of ocean water into the state carried on for thousands of years. During the Oligocene period, the area was mainly rainforest, supporting a rich variety of flora, which eventually became fossilized. Examples of such plant life can be seen at the Florissant Fossil Beds in Florissant. At least 150 different kinds of plants from this period are preserved there, including sequoia trees with trunks up to 17 and a half feet in diameter.
A popular attraction in the Garden of the Gods is Balanced Rock, which is made from a combination of coarse sand, silica, gravel and hematite. The rock actually fell off a ledge higher up, coming to rest in a bed of sand that eventually wore away at the base, making it appear as though the rock is precariously balancing in place.
Other types of fossils that have been unearthed in the state include the following: palm trees from the ancient rainforest that used to call Colorado home; Columbian mammoths; a Stegosaurus dinosaur; new species of dinosaurs like the Allosaurus fragilis and the Diplodocus longus; giant pigs and a rhinoceros that was found in Weld County.
Throughout the park, evidence of prehistoric life remains. In 1878, the dinosaur species Theiophytalia kerri was found and when the skull was reexamined in 2006, it was determined to be a completely new species. Interestingly enough, the park was originally called Red Rock Corral. However, in August 1859, a surveyor named M.S. Beach commented that the place would be a “capital place for a beer garden. Fellow surveyor Rufus Cable said, “Beer garden! Why, it is a fit place for the gods to assemble. We will call it the Garden of the Gods. The name stuck and the park now includes some 1,364 acres of land, trails and (of course) rocks.

SNIPPETZ™ WEEKLY MAGAZINE sense of joy is through the un-suppression of uncomfortable feelings and emotions, examining the cause of those feelings, and releasing them.
SUPPRESSED EMOTIONS
D
eep and uncomfortable emotions can sometimes seem to be too uncomfortable to feel and to heal. In order for people to heal uncomfortable emotions, they need to first be felt. However, many times the person who is carrying the feelings would rather deny them for various reasons. Many individuals are under the false perception that denial is better than addressing something uncomfortable. However, denial leads to several issues. A person may carry the false perception that by allowing the uncomfortable feelings to emerge, it will lead to uncontrollable rage, depression, and anxiety. A person may also carry the false perception that the uncomfortable feelings have dissipated since the events, which caused the feelings, occurred many years ago. With-
A Tai Yi treatment that assists a person in completing that process is Dark Side of the Moon-parts 1 and 2. This treatment needs to be completed between 24-72 hours apart. This is for those who have dark (uncomfortable) emotions that never surface. Meaning, they stay under the surface while the person stays in denial of the emotions. This opens the meridians to allow life energy flow to flow into the meridians to GENTLY open what has

been shut off from the conscious mindwhich will be connected to a false belief. This will allow the person to begin recognizing dark beliefs so the person lets go of that energy. This treatment is good for those in therapy.

Some may also incorrectly assume that confronting the issue will only create more issues. What it may do is bring the other issues to light, but not necessarily create more issues unless the confrontation is attempted along with judgment and negative anger. The issues that surface may have been issues already present, but not examined.

The denial of emotions is suppression of emotions. The suppression leads to a lack of passion for life and a lack of joy for life. That does not mean that the person does not ever experience joyful moments, but those moments can become far and few between or those moments may require significant events, such as a wedding. Joy for life can be felt daily if that joy is allowed and nurtured.

he origins of mole -- that famous Mexican sauce that is really a stew -- are as deep, complex and rich as the spicy, sweet, nutty multilayered mixture itself. It’s rumored that the Spaniards gave mole its name when they misheard the Aztecs refer to the stew as a “molli.” Another story goes that in the 17th century, Dominican sisters in Puebla scrambled to put a meal together for the visiting archbishop. They used the ingredients that they had on hand, such as dried chilies, chocolate and stale bread, to make a sauce for turkey.

Mole Negro is probably the most famous recipe. The almost-black, spicy sauce is what most people have tasted if they’ve eaten dishes from interior Mexico. Like the Mexican cooks for centuries, you can make your unique rendition of this fascinating dish that celebrates the ingredients of this colorful country. Mole also can be purchased ready-made as a paste or powder, or in jars or cans, but homemade is best.

Mole is most common in Puebla, relating back to the story of the nuns. But Oaxaca is not to be outdone. It’s also the home of complex, distinctive moles. And while there are countless mole variations, there is agreement among most Mexican cooks that there are seven notable recipes. These recipes represent the different colors and tastes of the foundation of every mole, which are chilies. It’s also agreed that the traditional Mexican mole is a special occasion dish, as it takes time and care to create.

Another good source, in spite of its name, is the Dummy series. Each manual is loaded with graphics, bold text and icons to bring your attention to especially important information. On Dummies.com don’t miss the “Computers for Seniors and “Software for Seniors sections. These are basic articles ranging from how to fix your printer to how to use a mouse. If you’re not a beginner, check the whole list of Dummy books. You’ll be surprised at the variety of topics. Read “Blogging for Dummies if you want to have a platform for a topic near and dear to your heart, or “Building a Web Site for Dummies if you want an Internet presence. Or how about “eBay for Seniors for Dummies as a way to build an online store and make a profit on items you want to sell? If you’re part of a senior center that gives classes on computer use, ask if it would consider buying some of these materials to have on hand. Or check your local bookstore or at the library. a really great idea comes from my list of ten. Sometimes my list grows way beyond ten. There is real benefit to writing down possible solutions. It makes it easier to evaluate the potential solutions.
ACQUIRE CONFIDENCE PART 2.1:
THINK - A FIVE-STEP PROCESS FOR PROBLEM SOLVING By Ron Ross
I
f you want to do something significant with your life, you are going to have to do some real thinking. The mission you have been given is too important to leave to irrational thoughts, emotion-filled guesswork or hasty judgments. Since you have been given a mission you also have the ability to fulfill that mission Here is a five-step process for problem solving: Step 1: Define the problem. The clearer you can define the problem you want to solve, the more likely you will find a solution. To define your problem, ask: what specific problem must be solved, what question needs answered, what additional information is needed? What principles, concepts and theories am I dealing with? What assumptions am I making? Which assumptions are true and which are bogus? What has more power over my choices: my thoughts or my feelings? Define your problem with as much specificity as you can.
Step 5: Decide. This part of the process may cause you to think even more, so be ready for some hard work. The idea here is that you employ your mind to give balance to your emotions. Be rational, look objectively at your calling, carefully evaluate everything related to your situation, add to and take from your list of ten, and make a rational decision.
Step 2: Task your brain. Your brain is a marvelous mechanism with a much greater capacity for problem solving than the combined computers ever made by humans. Experts say that, over the course of your lifetime, your brain will retain up to 1 quadrillion pieces of information. So put your brain to work to help you fulfill your mission. Since God gave you a mission he will also give you the ability to fulfill that mission. Take the problem you defined in step one and say to your brain, “Brain, here is the problem I face and I need an answer to it. Please solve it. I know you can. Step 3: Take a break. Sometimes it is advisable to give your brain some problem solving time. Your problem is well defined and your brain is tasked, so go do something else while your brain is at work. Take a walk, take a scenic drive, take a nap, take a week off, heck even take a month off from serious thought on the problem. Give your little gray cells time to solve your big problem; do not rush them, do not bully them, just keep asking and asking until you get some answers.
More on the process in the next essay – So stay tuned!

The washing machine doesn’t do the laundry. Power does.
Step 4: Think on paper. Experts say that every day you have over 70,000 thoughts. Sorting out the good ones from the bad can take time and energy. When I want to solve a problem I like to make a list of ten. I take a blank sheet of paper and at the top I write the problem I want to solve. Then I make a list of potential solutions with ten possible solutions as my goal. Very often

Individualized treatment for:
can convert A-fib into normal rhythm, though they are not always effective. The heart also can be electrically shocked to try to restore normal rhythm.
RHYTHM, RATE KEY TO TREATING A-FIB DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently was diagnosed with A-fib and am taking metoprolol. My cardiologist also wants me on Xarelto, which is a blood thinner. Why is it necessary to take the blood thinner to avoid blood clots when the metoprolol should be averting the A-fib anyway, which would cause the blood pooling and possible clotting. -- F.L. ANSWER: Atrial fibrillation (“A-fib”) is a chaotic lack of rhythm in the atria of the heart. This prevents the coordinated mechanical motion of the atria -- the smaller chambers of the top of the heart -- so they no longer fill the ventricles, the larger chambers that send the blood to the lungs (from the right side of the heart) and the body (from the left side). The rate of the ventricles normally is dependent upon the pacemaker in the right atrium: In atrial fibrillation, the ventricular heart rate can be normal, too slow or too fast. The heart rate of most people with A-fib is too fast, at least some of the time. Metoprolol, a beta blocker, slows the heart rate down to prevent dangerously high heart rates. It is pretty effective at doing so, although people who exercise may find that their heart rates can get very high, and may need a different medication. People with A-fib and very slow heart rates may need an artificial pacemaker. Metoprolol does not restore a normal rhythm in A-fib. There are medications, such as flecainide or amiodarone, which
The decision of treating the heart rate in Afib versus treating the rhythm depends on the individual’s symptoms and is made by a cardiologist. However, every person with A-fib needs careful consideration of treatment to prevent a blood clot, since the risk for stroke can be high. Older age, female sex and other vascular issues -- such as high blood pressure, diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, heart failure and especially a previous history of blood clot or stroke -- are risk factors for developing a stroke with A-fib. The anticoagulant (often inaccurately called “blood thinner”) Xarelto, like a much older drug, warfarin (Coumadin), reduce this risk. Most people with A-fib need treatment to prevent blood clot and stroke, AND treatment of either the rate or the rhythm. If rhythm control is successful, anticoagulation may be stopped later. The booklet on abnormal heart rhythms explains atrial fibrillation in greater detail. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 107W, Box 5364765, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My doctor wants me to get more vitamin D. Can I use cod liver oil? I did as a kid. -- V.M. ANSWER: There are many good food sources of vitamin D, and cod liver oil is one of the best. A single tablespoon contains about 1,400 units of vitamin D, which is as much as almost anyone needs in a day. Swordfish and salmon are excellent sources as well, with about 500 units in a 3-ounce serving.

When Kelly was fourteen he got into a fight with his sister’s fiancÊe, over a boating accident involving his sister, then ran away believing he had killed the man. On June 5th, 1860, at the age of thirty-three, he arrived by wagon train in Colorado City, while it was still part of the Kansas Territory. Like his father, Kelly was a stonemason, and a carpenter, as well as a teamster, and helped haul a sawmill from Johnson County, driving a team of oxen across the Santa Fe Trail, to build El Paso County’s first sawmill. Kelly delivered the first load of cut lumber to Colorado City, which had been established the previous year as a gold mining supply town. He was described as being tall, slender, with piercing blue eyes, blonde hair, and a dashing manner. ave you ever watched on of those space movies where astronauts are “frozen” in a chamber so that they are better suited to travel galaxies away? I know I have. It was practically the go-to idea for Sci-Fi movie producers over the last century. So many fictional space travelers had cryogenic freezing chambers that the concept has actually become somewhat boring.

send astronauts on long space missions. Most notably, NASA is targeting Mars. “I don’t think that we could go to Mars without something like this technology,” says John Bradford (the president of SpaceWorks). Putting the crew into a deep sleep would open up a lot of possibilities for what Bradford estimates would be a 6-month trip, each way. Because the crew would be in a temporary deep sleep, the mission would require less food, oxygen, water, and matter. The estimation is that a mission to Mars could now be done with a total load of 220 tons, as opposed to 400. This is a much more realistic number. The best part is that the technology for such a concept already exists. In fact, it’s used in most hospitals today.
But now the idea of a freeze-sleep chamber is more exciting than ever. Why, you whisper? Because instead of fantasizing about the concept in some bad Hollywood reboot, the idea is now a reality!
“Other than the duration, the procedural aspects of this are pretty benign,” Bradford is quoted saying. And that’s the thing – it really is only an issue of duration. With a planned Mars-trip lasting so long, it would take a pretty pill to knock out someone for that amount of time. Currently, medical experts are able to use a method called therapeutic hypothermia to put patients into a deep sleep. While in this procedure, people are subject to a lower overall body temperature and experience a coma-like state. The treatment is only used for short periods of time, currently.
That’s right folks, according to numerous reports around the inter-webs, NASA is laying the foundation for deep-sleep chambers. These pods would be used to
NASA was confident they could change that, however, when they began researching the technique for pilots over a year ago. As it stands, the longest torpor in-

right now. In another quote to the press Bradford admits “We have a ways to go”. But it doesn’t mean we should expect nothing to happen. NASA researchers are constantly looking for ways to put the first man/woman on Mars. Some experts say it should be plausible within the next 5-10 years.
President Bradford thinks it’ll be sometime in the next 20 years. Think about that. We may very well witness the greatest odyssey of the new millennium in the next couple of decades. Who’s to say it won’t be sooner, the way technology is growing?
But isn’t that just like our species? We are endless explorers forging into every frontier we can encounter. We took land and sea, air and space. Perhaps we should start working on that whole time-travel thing? If the current state of mankind is any indicator, it’s only a matter of time...
Either way, it will be quite the trip for those who are privileged to go. After what will essentially be a 6-month coma, astronauts will spend 18-months on the planet before leaving for Earth. At least that’s the plan NASA has mapped out

LIVING GOD’S GIFTS bringing Christ into your financial life by Chuck Maher, CFP®
INVESTING FROM A BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVE
...BRING CHRIST INTO OUR FINANCIAL LIVES
401 (WHAT)
The corporate sponsored 401(k) retirement plan, for most workers, has become the major cornerstone for a financially successful retirement. Most companies who have in the past provided – and paid for – traditional pension benefits for their retiring workers have replaced those pension plans with the employee funded 401(k) plan. Combined with Social Security and personal savings, the 401(k) plan makes up the financial resources you will have to draw upon in retirement. Unfortunately you have little control over the options you have with your 401(k) plan and its investment choices. Here are a few items that just might help maximize the choices that you do have.
LOOK FOR CONSISTENCY To develop consistency with your 401(k) plan you need to look for consistency. What I look for when reviewing investment choices is consistency of return and consistency of management. I want to know who the manager is, how long they have been there and how well they have performed each and every year. I want to know how they have performed compared to their benchmark, I want to know how they have performed compared with their peer group and most importantly I want to know how they have performed compared to my objectives. Just remember, past performance is not an indication for future success.
DIVERSIFY There are numerous studies demonstrating the relationship between the reduction of risk and consistency of return in portfolios that are adequately diversified. Simply put, diversification involves spreading the risk of your portfolio over different asset classes. A well-diversified portfolio should include funds that invest in domestic equities, international equities, bonds, alternative assets (i.e. real estate) and cash.
Some 401(k) plans are now offering target date funds. These funds provide diversification that is risk weighted based on a specific target retirement date. As these funds approach that target date they tend to increase their bond and cash holdings and reduce their equity positions. These allocation changes are often made without regard to what is happening with the economy.

Many 401(k) plans are providing some form of financial advice – either webbased or with an actual advisor. For those who are not currently work with a financial advisor, plan sponsored advice can be a good starting point. Just remember that the advice provided will be plan centered and generic.
age you to make the time to understand the details and expenses of your employer’s plan; to investigate the investment options; to build a portfolio that supports your goals and then religiously fund it. Your financial success, now more than ever, is dependent on you. “The plans of the diligent are sure of profit, but all rash haste leads certainly to poverty.” Proverbs 21:5
Considering that the choices you make could have a major effect on the financial success of your retirement, I would encourage you to review your 401(k) plan options with your own financial advisor. Your advisor can help you make 401(k) investment selections that are consistent with your goals and support your overall financial plan.
LOOK AT THE ALTERNATIVES Just because your employer offers a 401(k) or, for that matter, any other employee funded retirement plan, it doesn’t mean that you have to take advantage of it. Especially, if it is just not a very good plan and the employer is not providing matching contributions. In many cases you do have other options. Depending on your income and tax situation you may find that you are able to invest more money, increase your investment options and still maintain the same tax benefits using other retirement programs. Here again is where a good advisor can help you make sound choices consistent with your financial plan. Next to your home your 401(k) may well be the biggest investment you will ever make. If you are successful it will provide you with the income you will need throughout retirement. I encour-
