ruer words were never spoken, Dante. Fame is incredibly fickle. For some people, they reach their peak of fame in their younger years, only to fade away as they get older. Others work for years and years and reach their pinnacle much later in life. Either way, there’s never a guarantee that it’ll stick around. And those are the instances that have piqued our interest here at Snippetz; the instances where someone we all knew and loved faded from the limelight. Maybe it was the funny young actress in a sitcom that we watched every week with our families. Or perhaps it was the star of our favorite movie growing up. Whatever the situation, Snippetz just had to find out . . . where are they now? So come with us as we delve into the world of stardom and fame to find out where some of our most beloved television and movies stars ended up!

It’s practically impossible to forget the whistling in the theme song from “The Andy Griffith Show.” You can probably do it right now, if you tried. But we’re not talking about the song; we’re talking about little Opie Taylor, also known as Ron Howard.

It’s clear that the only way that Howard has faded into the background is by stepping behind the camera to direct and produce shows and movies rather than star in them. And that seems to be working just fine for him!

Howard played his role as Opie Taylor for all eight seasons that “The Andy Griffith Show” aired, starting in 1960. He had a handful of roles prior to that but it was his portrayal of Andy Griffith’s son that launched him into stardom.

DANNY BONADUCE Dante Daniel Bonaduce rose to fame with his portrayal of Danny Partridge in the sitcom “The Partridge Family.” He didn’t quite have the same success once the series ended in 1974 after airing for four years. Bonaduce spent several years during his late teens and early twenties battling drug addiction and homelessness.

Howard didn’t fade away as some child actors do. In fact, he went on to have a successful acting career, both on the big screen and on television, including the role of Richie Cunningham in the series “Happy Days.” By the time he left the show in 1980, Howard had already begun his directing career, with a low-budget comedy/action film called “Grand Theft Auto.”

Throughout this time, Bonaduce had a few starring and guest-starring roles in movies and television shows and eventually found his way onto the radio in the late 1980s, succeeding in maintaining a level of stardom on-air that way.

Even if his first flick wasn’t a blockbuster, Howard still managed to make a name for himself as a director with subsequent films like, “Splash,” “Backdraft,” “Apol-

Bonaduce couldn’t seem to keep himself out of trouble and was arrested several times, once for attempting to buy drugs and later for assault. He has managed to bounce back professionally from each of his missteps but never quite reached the level of fame he once had.

Who could forget the cute little boy from the movie “Jerry Maguire” who announces to Tom Cruise, “Did you know that dogs and bees can smell fear?” If you’ve seen the movie, you probably haven’t forgotten. That little boy was Jonathan Lipnicki.

Lipnicki played Renee Zellweger’s son Ray in the movie and captured hearts across the nation with his unique way of talking and bespectacled moon-pie face. He went on to star in several more films, most notably the “Stuart Little” movies.

After that, he stepped out of the spotlight to appear in mostly independent films. Recently, Lipnicki has been focusing on training in mixed martial arts but continues to work in film. He hasn’t made a blockbuster like his early films, though and there was speculation that he may be retreating from Hollywood in favor of MMA fighting, although that remains to be seen.

HALEY JOEL OSMENT Haley Joel Osment first appeared on the big screen at six years old when he played Tom Hanks’s son in “Forrest Gump.” He is most remembered for delivering the chilling line, “I see dead people,” in “The Sixth Sense” which was released in 1999. Osment continued to have a relatively successful acting career for the years following that film’s debut, including 2003’s “Secondhand Lions.” Since then, Osment has been busy but many of the films he’s taken part in haven’t made a big impact in mainstream cinema. Recently, a very different (older and heavier) Osment has been seen wearing Nazi garb as he depicts the self-proclaimed “Canadian Fuhrer” in the movie “Yoga Hosers.” Fans of his earlier characters could be in for quite a shock when this movie is released!

KESHIA KNIGHT PULLIAM

Best known for her role as Rudy Huxtable on the sitcom “The Cosby Show,” Keshia Knight-Pulliam started her acting career on “Sesame Street” at the age of three. While her career includes many films, her main claim to fame came on the small screen. However, since her twelve-year stint on “The Cosby Show” Pulliam hasn’t seen quite the same level of fame. She has done several projects with Tyler Perry, including the movie “Madea Goes to Jail,” and the T.V. series “House of Payne.” Pulliam has managed to keep her personal life out of the tabloids and continues working as Where Are They Now?... MACAULAY CULKIN Once hailed as the most successful child actor since Shirley Temple, Macaulay Culkin started acting at the age of four. His most notable role was that of Kevin McCallister in the movie “Home Alone” in 1990 and “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York” in 1992. While Culkin maintained a certain level of fame after the release of the “Home Alone” films, he definitely has not been in the center of the action since then. In fact, he retired from acting when he was 14. Culkin got into trouble with drugs in the early 2000s but managed to stay out of jail. He formed a band called The Pizza Underground but in May 2014, during his kazoo solo at Rock City nightclub

SNIPPETZ™ WEEKLY MAGAZINE Self-nurturing includes physical exercise, healthy eating, quiet time, meditation, time in nature undisturbed, time for creativity, and self-compassion. Self-compassion is necessary to heal the self-judgment that many carry. Am I good enough, do I work hard enough, do I have enough? These are judgments that are not helpful in strengthening your relationship with yourself.

PATHWAY PARENTING SELF-NURTURING AS A SINGLE PARENT

I

n a previous article, I addressed the difficulty and stress around being a solo parent. It’s important to remember that even though you’re a solo parent, you still need time to self-nurture. Finding a balance while parenting may seem tricky. Self-nurturing goes by the wayside quite easily. Why is that? Is that a learned pattern from our parents or society in general? Some believe that ‘good’ parents do not focus on self-nurturing. Who determines what a good parent is or is not? Most people can say effective parenting requires closeness, love, compassion, nurturing, listening skills, boundaries, and respect. The problem becomes when parents

try to give all of this without giving themselves time to recoup the energy exerted.

Whether you’re a solo parent through divorce, death, or your spouse is away

When a person wants to start running three to five miles per day, he or she needs to replace that energy. This is a known fact. If you decide to burn 1,000 calories during a hard workout, you’ll need to replace nutrients if you want to feel and be healthy.

on military duty, it’s important to take time to self-nurture. Figure out how you’re going to do that, commit to it, and create a more joyful life now. If a parent takes the time and effort to give all of the listed above parenting qualities, that parent needs to take time to recoup or restore the energy so it’s a balanced relationship. Some may say, “I can do that when my children are grown.” We raise our children for at least eighteen years. If we have two children five years apart, we are raising children for over 23 years. Why would anyone want to put his or her own life on hold for 23 years? Our lives are now. We just don’t know how many tomorrows we get.

A GRATEFUL FEAST, THEN AND NOW

I

n 1621, a small group of pilgrims in Plymouth, Massachusetts, gathered with the native Wampanoag people to celebrate a successful harvest. They could not have imagined the legacy they were creating for Americans who came after them. Giving thanks was part of the Wampanoag tradition, as well as the Pilgrims. After many hardships and hard labor, the pilgrims invited the Wampanoag to join them in feasting and sports in an outpouring of gratitude for the bounty they received. There is surprisingly little recorded about this historic event, but it does seem clear that, like our Thanksgiving today, there was a copious amount of food, and the revelry went on for days. There is a first-hand record, written by E.W. Winslow, to a friend in England that gives us some idea of their menu. He writes that the men brought in large amounts of fowl, like duck and geese. William Bradford, the Plymouth Colony governor, reports that “there was a great store of wild turkeys.” We can believe with a degree of confidence, that the pilgrims and the Wampanoag ate turkey on that first Thanksgiving, and most likely, venison and a variety of fish. Cranberries, herbs and onions were used to stuff the meat and fish. But many of the foods we most associate with Thanksgiving were missing. Potatoes probably were not served, but rather turnips and Jerusalem artichokes. There probably were pumpkins, but no pie. The pilgrims didn’t have access to butter, milk or flour for baking. The traditional Thanksgiving menu of today is about 200 years younger than the original celebration. Over time, as European farming methods were used, early settlers grew the crops they missed from home. When farm animals and dairy products became available, many of the foods we now associate with Thanksgiving were regularly prepared. Modern menus are a combination of the bounty our ancestors found and what they brought with them. My recipe for Sausage and Fruit Stuffing combines the traditional foods used by the Pilgrims and modern ingredients. It can be prepared up to two days in advance and refrigerated, allowing the flavors to meld and leaving one less thing to do on the day of your Thanksgiving feast!

SOCIAL SECURITY COLA INCREASE: 1.7 PERCENT

Y

ou’ve likely heard that our Social Security increase for 2015 will be only 1.7 percent. Last year, the Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) was 1.5 percent, so it’s a small improvement. But here is how that translates into real money: The average monthly increase will be $20. Here are a few items from the Bureau of Labor Statistics chart: During 2014, food went up 3 percent. (Of that, beef has gone up 17.8 percent since January. Dairy has gone up 10 times in the past 11 months. All meats, poultry, fish and eggs have increased 9.4 percent this year.) Utilities went up 3.5 percent. Medical care commodities went up 2.9 percent. Medical care services went up 1.7 percent.

ACQUIRE CONFIDENCE

The net loss of those dollars is in our current buying power. The loss will be made worse down the road because of compounding. Dollars we don’t get now can’t be compounded in years to come. Seniors League has a calculator to determine the longlasting impact of this low COLA. Go to seniorsleague.org and enter your figures. It will show you the dollar loss over time. COLA became mandatory in 1975. The yearly increase or decrease is based on the Consumer Price Index, which includes food, shelter, doctor and dentists, drugs and other day-today goods and services, with figures collected every month in 87 urban areas. Since 2010, the increase has averaged 1.4 percent per year. In two recent years it didn’t increase at all. If this low COLA for 2015 keeps you from being able to quit work, remember that you can earn $15,720 before it starts taking $1 out of your benefits for every $2 you earn. If you’re ready to turn 66 next year, that earning limit will be $41,880 before it takes $1 for every $3 you earn. Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Write to her in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. You have been called to something important in this life. God has placed you here for a reason – to solve a problem, lend a hand, heal a hurt, fix what is old and broken or discover something new. Unfortunately life does not come with instructions, and dreams have no directions attached.

Individualized treatment for:

However, it is possible that he has hypertension. Healthy young people sometimes get hypertension, and he may be able to get his blood pressure down without medication, through salt reduction and relaxation techniques. But if he needs them, there are medications that will not affect his athletic abilities.

‘WHITE-COAT SYNDROME OR HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE? DEAR DR. ROACH: My 21-year-old son is a college athlete, a sprinter, but he has had recurrent high systolic blood pressure readings since he was a senior in high school. He’s generally easygoing and not stressed. Doctors always attribute the elevated results to “white-coat syndrome,” since he is otherwise in excellent health and doesn’t drink, smoke or use drugs. The last reading was 142/78, when he checked it at a drugstore monitor. He’s never had any reason to be nervous in a doctor’s office, and the initial high reading was with the same pediatrician he’d been seeing all his life. Once, a nurse had him rest quietly for a few minutes and rechecked the reading; it was lower, but still high. He just finished four months of rigorous basic training with the Army with no problems (his high reading on his physical was put down to nervousness), and he may now be anxious no matter where or when the reading is taken, but I’m worried that something else may be going on. Is there something we should have checked? -K.C. ANSWER: The real question is whether your son has “white coat” hypertension, or just hypertension. The best way of answering this is with a 24-hour blood-pressure monitor, which checks the blood pressure every 15-30 minutes while awake, and less frequently at night. If those readings are mostly in the normal range, we could conclude that he has reactive, or white-coat, hypertension.

I sometimes order an echocardiogram to look for changes in the heart that go along with high blood pressure. However, the elevated blood pressure readings are only of a few years’ duration, so he might not have these yet. I think the 24-hour BP monitor is the way to go. High blood pressure is one of the most common ailments for the general population. The booklet on it describes what it does and how it’s treated. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 104W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 328536475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Is there much difference between D.O. degrees and doctor of medicine degrees? I just noticed that my PCP has a “D.O.” after his name, and nothing else. -- B.B. ANSWER: A D.O. is a doctor of osteopathy, someone who went to an osteopathic medical school. D.O. physicians are licensed to practice medicine and surgery in all U.S. states; in Canada, licensing varies by province. The training of an osteopathic physician is similar to that of a doctor with the M.D. degree, but osteopathic physicians obtain training in osteopathic manipulative medicine. It has been my experience that D.O. physicians are very similar to M.D. physicians, in most respects.

*** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. (c) 2014 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

T

here’s no feeling quite like going to the cinema. At least, that used to be the case. So often I hear about how disappointed people are having attended a movie theater these days. They complain about spending $50, seeing a mediocre flick, and being cold the whole time. I too have been greatly disenchanted with the theater as of late. 2014 has been a truly awful stretch for movies. While many films pulled in serious money this year, they didn’t seem to touch my soul in any way. Thankfully, that all changed a little over a week ago when I saw the brilliantly under-acclaimed Interstellar. It was vivid, thrilling, and thought provoking. Most of all, it brought back that magical feeling one can experience at the theater with its vintage flare and grandiose imagery. I highly recommend it. (Now that I’ve pleased our advertisers, let me get to my point) Interstellar abruptly brought to light the old flame of one of America’s greatest conspiracy theories – was the Moon Landing fake? Without giving too much away, the

INVESTING FROM A BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVE

It starts with inconsistencies in the videos and photos taken on that historic day. The first and most cited allegation is that the American flag that is placed on the moon appears to be moving in photographs. With no wind on the Moon, this would seem impossible. Theorists also site the fact that the footprints of the astronauts were unrealistically well preserved despite the fact that there is no moisture on the Moon. Both of those theories were put to bed in a 2008 episode of the show MythBusters called “NASA Moon Landing” where they addressed several conspiracy theories about the event. In the episode they prove that in a vacuum, a flag does not need wind to flap temporarily after a person sets it in motion. They also explain that the composition of lunar soil differs from terrestrial sand, meaning it behaves differently when stepped on. Because it is not weathered, lunar sand has a jagged texture which allows the particles to lock, creating clearer prints on the Moon’s surface than here on Earth. Basically, the MythBuster guys did what they do best. They blew up each and every individual theory about how the Moon Landing was an elaborate Hollywood production. But then, something unexpected happened.

film addresses (and denies) the theory that Apollo 11 never actually landed on the moon on a summer night in 1969. This would make Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and ten other Americans glorified actors, not the hero’s they’ve been celebrated as for the last 40-plusyears.

With news of the European Space Agency overseeing the first controlled touchdown on a comet nucleus last week, images of past space exploration began to resurface. This included the digitally enhanced (but untampered) photographs of NASA’s 1969 Moon Landing. One of these photos depicts Neil Armstrong exiting the Apollo 11 Lunar Module. The picture shows a clear image of the Module, the man exiting, and the gray surface of the moon. However, in the photo, a much clearer image of the Module’s viewing window shows a strange inconsistency. Through the window, behind Neil, you can plainly see a vibrant blue. The Moon and space are not blue, folks. The color seems to feel rather familiar to anyone who’s ever lived on Earth though. So what’s the explanation for this one? Why is it that looking through the Lunar Modules window we see what looks

like a blue sky? There is no answer. No one is talking. There’s been no explanation given by anyone. They’re just keeping quiet and ignoring the irregularity. In most studies conducted, 10-20% of American’s believe the Moon Landing was fake. 30% of Russians believe it to be false as well. So where do you fall? Do you believe that we won the space race with and improbable and inspiring Moon Landing? Or perhaps you think it was a brilliant piece of American propaganda to gain a leg up in the Cold War? Either way, it’s time for you to face the facts – Interstellar is a great movie about the final frontier and you should go watch it in 70mm IMAX as soon as possible.
