“When language was no transcendental enough to complete the meaning of a revelation, symbols were relied upon for heavenly teaching, and familiar images, chosen from the known, were made to mirror the unknown spiritual truth.” – William H. Hunt, American soldier

efore there was Google, before there was the Internet, before there was even a series of encyclopedias that we could use to look up important information, long before all that, there were symbols. Humankind has used symbols to interpret the world around us and to signal things to other people without having to verbally communicate with them. The natural world around us held unlimited discoveries for us to make if only we paid attention to the symbols around us. Anymore, we’re so buried in

our tablets and smart phones that we probably miss the majority of what Mother Nature is trying to tell us. Given that understanding, we at Snippetz became intrigued: with all these symbols floating around out there, wouldn’t it behoove us to find out more about them? The answer is yes and so we’ve chosen to investigate animal symbolism because it’s prevalent in many cultures and because animals are cute.

WHAT IS A SYMBOL? The dictionary defines a symbol in a few ways, one of which is as some-

thing used for or regarded as representing something else. It can be a material object, emblem or token often used to represent something immaterial. So what does all that mean? It means that we as humans have imbued certain objects, like a trio of lights colored red, yellow or green, to have a meaning that is more complex and important than the sum total of its physical parts. It’s true that stop light is simply a light fixture that alternates between the red light, the yellow light and the green light. But we’ve given that light fixture a more important meaning; we’ve agreed to allow that light to signal when it’s our turn to move our vehicle through an intersection. It’s a symbol of cooperation and turn-taking that allows for most people to safely navigate on the roadways. So what does all that have to do with animals? Well, animals have been symbols of many things in many cultures throughout time. Now that we’re clear on what a symbol is, we can dig deeper into some of the interpretations made by mankind over the years.

many cultures, the bear is connected to the shaman or healer of the tribe. The Inuit people of North America greatly value and appreciate the bear in their culture. It’s believed that if an Inuit hunter accepts his fate to be eaten by a bear, he may reincarnate as a shaman with the spirit of a bear.

warriors will often use their likeness or their pelts during battle to invoke their power and fearlessness.

CATS

FISH

We’ve all probably heard the superstition that claims it’s bad luck if a black cat crosses your path. While that may or may not be true, it’s one way that cats have been used to symbolize something. Typically however, cats are used to represent patience, curiosity (which killed the cat, you know) and independence. It’s probably not shocking to hear that cats are connected to those traits, especially if you’ve ever owned one.

In another example of fairly abstract animal symbolism, the Celtic and Welsh cultures associate fish, particularly salmon, with knowledge. In one legend, a man seeks the advice from a series of wise animals. The last, which was the oldest and wisest was the salmon. In another legend, the hero uses a salmon to leap across a bridge in order to gain access to his enemy’s advanced knowledge of arms and eventually had to leap over a legendary warrior woman in order to gain access to the knowledge behind her family’s secrets.

Cats are often used to portray agility, flexibility and grace. Consider the saying that cats always land on their feet. Whether or not that’s true (and again, if you’ve ever owned a cat, particularly an overweight one, you know this isn’t always true), the idea is that when you need the power to rebound from a setback in your life, the symbol of the cat can help.

BEARS Since we’ve already mentioned bears, we may as well start there! When you picture a bear, you likely think of words like “strong,” “brave,” “powerful,” and the like. Those same qualities are exactly what the bear symbolizes in many cases. Their quiet strength, their connectedness to nature and their confidence are undeniable and have encouraged cultures across the globe to use their likeness in jewelry or clothing to bring about those same qualities for anyone who may need them. For example, it’s believed that the Vikings used to wear bear skins during times of war to scare their opponents and to instill fear by evoking the power and courage of the animal.

Likewise, the unexpected appearance of a cat in your life may be interpreted as an indicator that you need to reassess aspects of your life and find a new perspective on your circumstances.

BOARS These animals are prominent especially in Celtic and Welsh traditions. But the symbolism of the boar is perhaps more abstract, in some instances. Often, they are used to portray fertility and wealth. But their likeness and spirit is also used to portray courage and strength. That symbolism is much easier to understand given that they are dangerous and often hard to kill. For that reason,

Similarly, when a bear is spotted, it’s often seen as a sign that physical and emotional healing is on its way. In

2

Statues representing boars are sometimes found in beside those of armed warriors in the Celtic nations as well, further demonstrating the connection.

Another legend tells of a man eating the salmon of wisdom. In both cultures, children are encouraged to eat fish in order to increase their intelligence, further proving the belief that fish are harbingers of knowledge.

UNLIKELY ANIMAL SYMBOLISM Some animal symbols speak for themselves. Others really make no sense. Here are a few unlikely animal symbols; • Cow: swift, insightful and focused •

Crab: good luck and success

• Duck: can clearly see and deal with emotions • Porcupine: innocence, companionship and trust Where Are They Now?... Continued on Page 3

SNIPPETZ™ WEEKLY MAGAZINE Each part of the dream will be symbolic and can be interpreted symbolically. Then there is another type of dream.

ARE DREAMS LITERAL OR SYMBOLIC?

J

ust about everyone has dreams during the sleep state. Some people state that they do not remember their dreams or that they do not dream. Almost everyone dreams, though, some have difficulty in remembering their dreams. When people sleep, the theta brain wave (some research suggests the alpha brain wave as well) allows individuals to dream. In a healthy body, during sleep, the brain wave will shift up and down between theta and delta. If the brain has difficulty in transitioning, it may not shift into delta very well, but can still shift into theta and allow dreams to occur. What is the purpose of a dream? Many people will shrug dreams off as meaningless. There are many times that dreams will simply reflect stress or other ongoing issues that occurred during the day. In those cases, it is not necessary to pay much attention to the dreams.

A person can have a ‘dream’ where a particular event occurs. The person wakes up and remembers vividly what occurred in the dream. At a later time, that event occurs just like in the dream or very similar to the dream. Perhaps, it was a car accident, a fight, a breakup, an engagement, or some other event. This is not a dream, rather, it is the result of receiving information intuitively and it was demonstrated in a dream-like

There are times, however, that dreams are painting a picture that needs to be examined. People see the world through a five percent understanding. That five percent comes from the conscious mind. Much more information is passed into the unconscious and subconscious. That is how advertising works. One can see a marketing ad displayed for a particular product and that person can say, “I do not agree with the message of the ad.” That can be a true statement consciously. However, the message of the ad goes into the unconscious and subconscious and can impact that person at a later time or immediately.

state. These are literal and can be examined literally. How does one tell the difference? The difference can be felt. Many individuals only feel emotions, but a strong feeling state is being able to feel intuitively as well. When people are connected to their feeling state, sensing the intuitive becomes quite simple. For additional information, please contact: Tami Urbanek of Empowerment Through Healing 719•488•2290

Everything people see goes into their unconscious and will impact the beliefs (known and unknown) operating in the subconscious. This can later be reflected in a dream. That means dreams are symbolic. When the person needs to understand a message, the mind will present a dream utilizing the images that person has seen in movies, ads, commercials, conversations and general observations.

THE TURKEY ISN’T DONE! AND OTHER DISASTERS

A

fter 35 years of cooking, I’ve had my share of Thanksgiving Day disasters! Here are some secrets to saving your sanity and your Thanksgiving dinner: HOW TO DEFROST A TURKEY You’ll need at least 24 to 48 hours (about five hours per pound) to thaw a frozen turkey in the refrigerator. If you need to do a quick thaw, place the wrapped, frozen turkey in your kitchen sink or a large container like an ice chest. Cover the turkey with cold water. Drain and refill the water every half-hour because as the bird thaws out, the water will get warmer. Using this method, the turkey will thaw at the rate of about a half-hour for each pound. PREPARING THE BIRD FOR COOKING Remove the giblet package (neck, livers, heart and gizzards) from inside the cavity of the bird AND check the neck cavity. Some manufacturers place the giblet package in the neck cavity and others place it inside the cavity closest to the legs. Most turkeys come with the legs already trussed (crossed and secured with a metal or plastic bracket). If you’re not going to stuff your bird, there’s no need to truss the legs. Trussing an unstuffed bird hinders the hot oven air from circulating inside and around the legs. This means that the dark meat will take longer to cook and the breast meat will cook faster and probably dry out before the legs ever get completely done. THE TURKEY ISN’T DONE Don’t rely on the “pop-up” timer in the turkey, as it usually means that the breast is overcooked and the dark meat isn’t done. If the dark meat isn’t done, remove the wings and breast meat from the rest of the turkey, in one piece, if possible. Cover the breast and wing portion with foil and set it aside. Put the drumsticks and thigh portion of the turkey back into the oven to continue cooking until done. You can re-assemble the whole turkey and garnish it, or just cut it into serving portions and arrange it on a platter STUFFING SAVERS If the stuffing/dressing is too wet, spread it out in a thin layer on a sheet pan so that it will dry quickly. Place it back into the oven for 5 to 7 minutes. If it’s too dry, add more pan drippings or chicken broth to the mixture. If you don’t have anymore drippings or broth, you

can combine a chicken bouillon cube (if you have one), along with a teaspoon of poultry seasoning, three tablespoons of butter and 1 cup of water. Cook the mixture in the microwave for 3 to 5 minutes or until it comes to a boil. Stir to combine and then add it, a little at a time, to the dressing until it’s moist.

GRAVY RESCUE TIPS If the gravy is lumpy, pour it through a strainer into a new pan and bring it to a simmer, stirring gently. If it’s too thin, mix a tablespoon of melted butter with a tablespoon of flour. Bring the gravy up to a boil and whisk in the butter mixture to thicken your gravy. If the gravy is too thick, add a little more chicken broth, pan drippings or a little water and butter to thin it out.

SNIPPETZ™ WEEKLY MAGAZINE • When it comes to cost, an additional day in the hospital usually costs less than outpatient care that is the result of being released from the hospital too early.

EXTRA DAY IN HOSPITAL COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE

W

ould you willingly stay in the hospital one more day to reduce your chances of being readmitted? A study by Columbus Business School shows that even one day longer in the hospital can reduce readmissions and costs -- and save lives -- when compared to outpatient care. The study focused on pneumonia, heart failure and myocardial infarctions in 6 million patients over the age of 65. Here are the stats for one extra day in the hospital: • Mortality risk reduced by 7 percent for those who have had a heart attack; 22 percent for those who have been treated for pneumonia. • Readmissions rate decreased by 7 percent for those with severe heart failure. • Five to six times more lives saved compared to using outpatient care.

Nick Snips THANKSGIVING BLUES by Nick Yanez

A

re you excited? This week we all get to experience the glorious day that is Thanksgiving. There will be Turkey, mashed potatoes, corn, gravy, and definitely pie. I’m going to be indulging myself in a healthy portion of each item, as well as some serious NFL football. I don’t want to get totally out of hand and say that T-day is my favorite holiday, but I also don’t want to say that it’s not. The feast-centered celebration is perhaps the most universally loved National Holiday in America. But as with every good thing in life, there is one major stain on the silkysmooth day – it’s called Black Friday. I’m sure you’ve heard the complaints. Over the last three or four years Black Friday, the most cutthroat and callous shopping day in the first world, has slowly evolved into Black Thursday. This has many questioning the morals of business owners and CEO’s around the world. A large portion of the American people contest the idea of Black Thursday, saying employees of retail giants like Walmart, Macy’s, and Best Buy deserve the Holiday off like everyone else.

At this point, nearly 20 percent of Medicare patients end up being readmitted within a month. It makes sense for hospitals to try to keep readmissions at a minimum, because penalties will begin for additional illnesses and conditions beginning in 2015. So far hospitals have looked for ways to keep the readmission rate down, mostly by using outpatient care. However, this study shows that for most patients, that one extra day in the hospital is the better method to reduce readmissions and deaths. NOTE: Remember that you have until Dec. 7 to join a Medicare health or drug plan in the open enrollment, or make changes to the one you have for 2015. Go online to medicare.gov and compare your options. Look for the Medicare & You booklet for a lot of answers. Or contact Medicare at 1-800-633-4227. Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Write to her in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. it’s not that type of holiday. Maybe people should enjoy and appreciate time with their family on their day off, every time of year. It’s basic time management. Plus, a major bonus for non-retail workers is that Black Friday is now a cheap shopping opportunity for those who don’t feel like standing in line at 3am.

They refuse to shop on Thanksgiving and give into the greedy capitalist agenda! The only problem with that is… it will make no difference. Don’t you think major retail stores have factored in the AntiBlack-Thursday brigade into their decision making? Big wigs across the industry are very aware that about 70% of shoppers won’t take part in the holiday shopping. It’s the other 30% they crave.

Then there’s the more tender side of things. Give these retail workers one day off. They deserve that. They’re people. They’re Americans. Let’s respect that. Black Friday is supposed to be the major kick-off to Holiday shopping, where friends and family get Christmas gifts for each other in an attempt to make their loved one’s feel cared for. Is greedy shopping on a beloved Holiday really the proper way to go about this?

The past couple of years, major retail companies have experimented with opening in the evenings on Thanksgiving. It’s given many teenagers an excuse to get away from their families long after the feast has ended. For the most part, Black Thursday has been a success – which is why we’re seeing more of it. Would big companies open on Thanksgiving if they were losing money? Of course not. They’ve made a handsome portion of profits in their Holiday endeavor, which is why they’re taking it to the next level this year.

Here’s my thought on the matter – K-Mart’s strategy will totally backfire (as with Radio Shack and Big Lots). Thanksgiving is a day where people traditionally like to relax, watch television, and eat. That’s not going to change for some silly sales. The morning and early afternoon sales will suffer, as K-Mart and its evil cohorts lose money by overstaffing. Meanwhile, businesses that open in evening after most Thanksgiving meals have been consumed will see roaring success, as usual. In 2015, expect more of Black Thursday – but not until 6pm or so. On that note, Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family; be blessed. Feel free to send Nick an email anytime about his weekly column, or any leads you have for underreported stories he could write about, to NickSnipsMail@Gmail. com

This year’s super villains though, are KMart, Big Lots, and Radio Shack. These three companies are bypassing the afterdinner shopping approach that Best Buy and Walmart innovated and taking it to the extreme. All three of the retailers will be opening Thanksgiving morning, forcing many workers to work full daytime shifts on the National Holiday. K-Mart is opening the earliest, at 6am.

There’s good and bad that comes with this. Obviously people feel workers should be entitled to a day off with their family. But why? It is after all just a Thursday where we eat a big meal. This is by no means infringing on anyone’s religious freedom, as

ACQUIRE CONFIDENCE PART 2.7:

PREPARE FOR ACTION: COUNT THE COST By Ron Ross

D

o you know the difference between price and cost? The terms “price” and “cost” can be confusing. The two terms are related, but quite different. The price is the amount you pay for a product or service. When you pay a price for something, the price represents the value of what you give up in order to purchase the product or service. The cost is the amount spent by the business to make the product or deliver the service. Let’s say you want to buy a candy bar. The price of the candy bar was set when the manufacturer determined what they thought you would be willing to pay for their product. As you stand at the candy counter you confront the question, “What am I willing to give up for some chocolate right now?” Then you make your decision. The cost, however, was calculated by the dollars and resources it took to produce the candy bar and make it available to you for purchase. To determine his costs, the confectioner calculated the ingredients, amount of labor and other hard costs such as equipment, manufacturing, packaging, selling, shipping, profits, etc. Then he considered what the consumer would be willing to pay for the product and set the price. When you look at what you want to do with your life a similar price/cost comparison must be made, but the comparison will include much more than ingredients, packaging, shipping and profits. In the late 1960s I took my wife and two

small children to Africa. Our first term there was to be three-and a half years. Our mission board helped us calculate the price which included airline tickets, shipping personal goods, and the anticipated expenditures required to live in a foreign country. The cost, however, involved much more than money. For one thing, we would take our grandchildren from their grandparents. What would be the cost to our parents of missing out on three plus years of their grandchildren’s growth? How would it affect our children? Another cost was the selling at auction of nearly all our household goods and furniture. As a young married couple we paid what we thought was a high price to purchase the items. But the cost of selling them seemed to us much higher as we did not get the price we hoped for from the sale. In central Africa our children would not have access to good schools. It required us to put our oldest child in a mission boarding school located over 1000 miles from where we lived. It was expensive to send him there (the price was high) but the emotional cost to him and to us was even higher, while the value received to him later in life made both the financial and emotional sacrifice worthwhile. You must make a price/cost analysis required for the achievement of your dreams. In many cases you will not measure the cost using dollars but rather the emotional, physical, spiritual or other costs (investments) necessary. The price of following your dreams is one thing. The cost to you and the ones you love is something else. That is why Jesus counseled those who wanted to follow him to “count the cost.”

The instrumental hit the Top 10 on pop charts in 1970. “Lay Lady Lay” by Bob Dylan was to be the theme song, but he didn’t finish writing it in time. 3. Stevie Wonder, in 1977. 4. Alice Cooper, in 1972. 5. “Kodachrome,” by Paul Simon in 1973. Kodachrome was Kodak’s 35mm camera film. Over the years Simon switched back and forth between “looks better in black and white” and “looks worse in black and white.” It’s not known whether his switch was because Kodak used the song in commercials.

LIVING GOD’S GIFTS

The Housing Market

bringing Christ into your financial life

by Chuck Maher, CFP®

The housing market is a major ...BRING CHRIST INTO OUR FINANCIAL LIVES component of our economy. We are seeing an increase in home sales as well as an increase in new construction. Home values are going up and many homeowners, who found themselves after the housing bubble with mortgages exceeding their home values, are seeing a real increase in their equity. According to Zillow the median sales price for an existing home was $211,325 and over all home values are up 6.5% from a year ago. This hanksgiving is upon us. The table acceleration in home values has been good will be set, the turkey cooked, with for homeowners unfortunately it is preall of its trimmings, and the cel- venting many would-be buyers from parebration of thanks will soon begin. I love ticipating in the market. That compounded Thanksgiving, how can you not – family, with the limited supply of lower-priced food and football the three F’s of a holi- homes and rising mortgage rates are keepday dedicated to the celebration of life with ing first-time homebuyers on the sidelines. those closest to us. My prayer for you is That situation, however, does seem to be correcting itself. that you will truly have a joyous day.

HAPPY (FINANCIAL) THANKSGIVING

INVESTING FROM A BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVE

T

With that said, I would like to add to the three F’s two more for which I give thanks. The first is faith. God has blessed us with so much. We are living in the greatest country in the greatest time in history. God has truly been generous and for that I give my thanks. The second is finances. The last handfuls of years have been arduous. In 2008 we entered the great recession; we saw the collapse of the housing market, massive declines in the stock markets and millions losing their jobs. But that too has turned around and for that I am truly thankful.

The Economy Over the last few years the economy has been growing; at an anemic pace, but it has been growing. On the whole corporate earnings are up, tax revenues are up, government spending, in part due to sequester, is down and interest rates remain low. All of these make for a strengthening economy. I recently attended a conference with a number of portfolio managers and economists. The consensus was that the growth we are experiencing is sustainable. On the whole they would like to see stronger growth, but, barring the unforeseen, they believe that we are building a solid eco-

Employment Opportunities Without meaningful jobs and income growth no economy can survive for long. You can only grow profits so much by cutting expenses. At some point in you have to start adding jobs and businesses are slowly beginning to hire. The unemployment rate is coming down. The current rate as of October is slightly above 5.9%, well below the high of 10% yet still far off from full employment. Admittedly many workers are underemployed and far too many are dependent on part-time jobs. But the job market is expanding and that is good for the economy.

The Stock Market From late 2007 to March of 2009 we saw the Dow Jones Industrial Average lose better than 50% of its value. For most stock investors that was the greatest erosion of wealth experienced in their lifetime. Unfortunately as you may recall it didn’t stop there. The economy was in total shambles. But what has happened since then? In the past six years, since those lows in the mid6000s, we have seen the Dow rise to over 17,500. That is an increase of well over 100%; far exceeding the 14,164 high in October of 2007. For the investors who

stayed true to their goals and took advantage of those opportunities they have been handsomely rewarded. Will we continue to see those types of returns? I don’t believe so. However, if the economy continues to expand, I do not believe it would be unreasonable to see stock market values continue to grow. In the long-term those who have bet against the US economy have not performed well. In my many years as a financial advisor I have learned that you can only do what you can do the rest is in the hands of God. Clearly you cannot control the uncontrollable and the economy is uncontrollable. So this Thanksgiving Day give thanks for the blessings we do have, recognize that on the whole our financial lives are getting better and with God’s grace will continue to do

so. And most importantly set aside your financial worries for the day and enjoy your family, good food, and of course football. “Therefore I will give thanks unto thee, O Lord… and I will sing praises unto thy name.” 2 Samuel 22:50 Chuck Maher is a Certified Financial PlannerTM practitioner specializing in Christian values based financial planning and investing.
