even the idea of facing those fears can leave you unable to function. In that instance, you are probably not dealing with a fear; you’re dealing with a phobia. Some phobias are relatable and others are a little more unusual. And of course, Snippetz got curious. What are some of those unusual phobias? Read on to find out!
WHAT IS A PHOBIA? A phobia is defined as follows: an exaggerated usually inexplicable and illogical fear of a particular object, class of objects or situation; an extremely strong dislike or fear of someone or

something. Phobias are classified as a type of anxiety disorder, specifically a neurosis. They are generally believed to be the result of a fear produced by an original threatening situation, such as a neardrowning incident in childhood. That fear is thought to then have been transferred to other similar situations, like any encounter with a body of water. Usually the original fear is repressed or forgotten in lieu of the new, more allencompassing fear . . . the phobia.
• Omphalophobia – the fear of belly buttons. Who DOESN’T have this? (Kidding). • Papaphobia – fear of the Pope. • Politicophobia – the fear or abnormal dislike of politicians. Again, who DOESN’T have this? (Partly kidding).
SOME UNUSUAL PHOBIAS
• Geniophobia – the fear of chins. For men, this phobia would probably make shaving very difficult.
Let’s be clear: phobias are a serious disorder that shouldn’t be made fun of or taken lightly. An estimated 6.3 million Americans have been diagnosed with a phobia and to those people, their phobia is a very real problem that they have to deal with every day. But for those of us who don’t suffer from the disorder, some phobias are hard to comprehend. Snippetz researched phobias and we’ve picked out a few of the more interesting, unusual phobias, and here they are!
• Bibliophobia – the fear of books. How awful! Seriously, this phobia is devastating. • Arachibutyrophobia – the fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of your mouth. Admittedly, this is very annoying. • Angrophobia – the fear of anger or becoming angry. Perhaps this should be a standard phobia to instill in those dealing with anger management issues.
• Nomophobia – the fear of being without mobile phone coverage. Snippetz has to wonder, how many more people are being diagnosed with this phobia as the years go by? We bet lots of teenagers are!
• Chrometophobia (or Chrematophobia) – the fear of money. If money is the root of all evil, perhaps this phobia should become the next epidemic to spread around the world.
• Alliumphobia – the fear of garlic. This fear would be especially difficult to manage if you owned an Italian restaurant. Just saying . . .
• Barophobia – the fear of gravity. • Hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia – the fear of long words. That should also be the definition of irony.
• Allodoxaphobia – the fear of opinions. Would it be possible to claim this phobia when dealing with an argumentative teenager?
• Hellenologophobia – the fear of Greek terms or complex scientific terminology. Would it be fair to claim this phobia as the reason why someone didn’t pass college biology?
• Consecotaleophobia – the fear of chopsticks. Maybe it’s not so much a fear of chopsticks as an extremely high level of annoyance at the difficulty associated with using them.
• Nomatophobia – the fear of names. Wouldn’t giving the fear of names a

name just perpetuate the cycle of neurosis? • Papyrophobia – the fear of paper. • Peladophobia – the fear of bald people. • Telephonophobia – the fear of telephones. This is the cure for all those people who can’t seem to detach their phones from their ears long enough to drive or function properly. • Zemmiphobia – the fear of the great mole rat. This is a very specific phobia and with the lack of great mole rats in the area, someone with this phobia could likely deal with it very well here. • Selenophobia – the fear of the moon. How depressing, not being able to enjoy a full moon or a harvest moon or even a lunar eclipse! • Ephebiphobia – the fear of youths or the young. This would be a convenient phobia to have when your niece or nephew has a dirty diaper. “Sorry, I can’t change her diaper. I’m scared of her.” • Samhainophobia – the fear of Halloween. It’s safe to say that no one in the Harrison family of Colorado Springs suffers from this phobia. In fact, if there was a phobia that was the complete opposite of Samhainophobia, they would all have it! • Ambulophobia – the fear of walking. It appears that every toddler on the planet has been afflicted with this phobia at some point in time or another. Especially when there’s some place that their parents need to be in a hurry. One of the symptoms is dropping to the floor and becoming dead weight while dangling from their parent’s hand. • Lachanophobia – the fear of vegetables. your children about if you ever want them to finish their peas at dinner. • Melophobia – the fear or hatred of music. This phobia would be devastating to suddenly come down with. Music evokes so many emotions and plays such a large part in so many people’s lives. • Mnemophobia – the fear of memories. We all have memories we’d like to forget but how could you stop yourself from remembering anything? You would be your own worst enemy. • Pteronophobia – the fear of being tickled by feathers. Being tickled is truly terrifying so this phobia seems completely logical. • Sciophobia (Sciaphobia) – the fear of shadows. Perhaps this is Punxsutawney Phil’s problem.
• Linonophobia – the fear of string. • Levophobia – the fear of things to the left side of the body. How would you set up your house not to have things on the left side of your body? That would be pretty difficult to achieve. • Dextrophobia – fear of things to the right side of the body. Yet again, how exactly would someone function with this phobia? It seems you’d be afraid of everything at some point in time or another. • Cibophobia (Sitophobia, Sitiophobia) – the fear of food. As before, it’s safe to say that no one in the Harrison family of Colorado Springs suffers from this phobia. • Anablephobia – the fear of looking up. • Pogonophobia – the fear of beards. If you have this phobia, “No Shave November” must be terrifying!

PATHWAY PARENTING COMMUNICATING WITH YOUR TEEN
C
ommunicating with teenagers can be quite challenging at times. Many times parents become frustrated with their teens’ listening skills…or lack thereof. When that happens, sometimes parents yell. They may hear the loud words but will most likely not listen to what you’re saying. How do you communicate effectively with your teen? It’s important to first remember how you felt as a teenager. Remember what you wanted to do, your friends, and what your priorities were. Place yourself in your teen’s position and remember your adolescence. Also recall the hormone shifts and up-down emotional roller coaster. A teenager is one who wants parental support at the same time proving independence. This can create conflict at home some-
In some cases, a third party can assist with this. If your teen is showing signs of depression, anxiety, severe stress, and withdrawal, it may be necessary to seek some assistance. If you suspect your teen may be using drugs, alcohol, or pharmaceuticals it may be advised to seek assistance. At the same time, it’s important to avoid judgment, coercion or threats when trying to communicate with your teenager.

Perhaps they learned it at school, their friends, home or some other place. If disrespect was learned at home then that gives you the option to begin changing it.
Be the example of love, compassion, and openness. Talk about your feelings and your perceptions. Invite teens in for a discussion without making them feel bad or wrong if they do not accept the invitation. Be the example of a healthy relationship and a willingness to be human. ould you like a simple definition of priorities? Here it is: The things that matter most. That may be far too simple a definition for a time management expert, but many books, blogs, songs and poems use that definition. “First Things First” is a book about separating the urgent from the important written by Steven R. Covey. Charles Krauthammer wrote a New York Times best-selling book titled, “Things That Matter.” My favorite author, John C. Maxwell, wrote a great book on time management titled, “Today Matters.” Barbra Streisand sings, “It’s not how many summer times we had to give to fall, The early morning smiles we tearfully recall, What matters most is that we loved at all.”

1. Preheat oven to 425 F. Combine gravy mix, poultry seasoning, milk, water and butter in large skillet or saucepan. Bring to boil on medium heat, stirring frequently. Stir in turkey and vegetables. Return to boil. Reduce heat to low; simmer 5 minutes. 2. Spoon into 9-inch deep-dish pie plate or 2-quart baking dish. Top with pie crust. Seal edges and cut several slits on top. 3. Bake 30 minutes or until crust is golden brown. Let stand 5 minutes before serving. CITRUS IS PART OF HOLIDAY TRADITION
W
hen most people think of fall, lemonade does not come to mind -- or key lime pie, or even orange juice or fresh grapefruits. But the truth of nature is that, although all citrus plants fruit at slightly different times, late fall is the beginning of citrus season. Many varieties of citrus, having traveled hundreds or even thousands miles from their snowbird homes, are showing up in grocery stores across the country. Citrus flavors appear in many traditional foods of the season. The candied citrus in fruit cakes, orange juice in glazed carrots and the lemon zest and peel in baked goods have become the ubiquitous flavors of fall and winter. Because the flavor of citrus is so refreshing, it’s no surprise that we also adore it when times are hot. If you want to taste the very best citrus of the season, find the heaviest, sweetest orange imaginable, or the sweet peel and lip-puckering center of a kumquat, or the surprisingly nectar-like fruit of a beautiful pink grapefruit. Citrus trees of every kind are a subtropical plant, and prone to freezing in the winter months. Many home gardeners in every state try their luck at growing citrus, usually dwarf varieties that they can protect from frost. However, commercially, citrus in the United States is grown mainly in California and Florida, where the weather is to its liking. In both states, citrus farming began in the 1800s. In California, during the Gold Rush of 1849 there was a huge demand for oranges that were used to combat scurvy, which is a vitamin C deficiency. In Florida, the citrus industry is worth billions of dollars to the state, where it produces more oranges than anyplace else in the world. But long before commercial farming of oranges, lemons and the almost countless other varieties of citrus, citrus trees were growing in the Americas in the 1500s, brought in by the Spaniards. Citrus of all kinds is high in vitamin C, and it is also a good source of other essential nutrients such as potassium, folate, calcium and phosphorus. Citrus is considered a nutrient-dense food and often is prescribed by doctors and dietitians for the prevention and treatment of many illnesses and disorders. Even though most of us have a favorite lemon- or orange-infused dish, citrus season is the time to try a new variety in a new way. The wonderful juice of almost any citrus fruit can replace the vinegar in a salad dressing, while the plump, juicy

1. Preheat oven to 400 F. 2. Using a sharp knife, remove skin and white pith from grapefruit and discard. Cut grapefruit segments from the surrounding membrane, letting them drop into a medium-size bowl. Squeeze juice of the remaining flesh of grapefruit membrane into the bowl. eniors sometimes buy into the stereotypes that we’re over the hill, getting weak and past our prime. Not only that, but we often develop negative attitudes about others in our group simply because of their age. There is at least one way to counter that negativity. Researchers at UC Berkeley and Yale found a way to use positive subliminal messages to increase activity levels in seniors and increase physical health -- and it only took a few weeks. The results were better than six months of exercise. One hundred seniors with an average age of 80 were divided into four groups for multiple 15-minute sessions. Some were given implicit or explicit messages. Some wrote essays about being active. Some were given positive subliminal one-word messages, flashed on a computer screen so fast they couldn’t really be seen.

t’s that terrible time of year. The holidays are upon us.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not one of those people that gets depressed and emotional during the holidays. I don’t get annoyed by Christmas decorations or Santa displays at the mall. I’m talking about food; all the delicious goodness. There are dinners upon dinners. Gracious women everywhere are baking cookies and pies. How can you refuse? You can’t. It all taste so good! But it all comes at a cost. It’s no secret that most Americans start putting on a little extra weight around the holidays. It all started last week. That Turkey never stood a chance. Neither did the mashed potatoes. Thanksgiving dinner was a great feast, where there was no shame in overstuffing yourself among friends and family. It’s a ‘feel no shame’ kind of day in general.
Psychological improvements were seen in the form of more positive self-perceptions, which then improved physical strength (getting up and down from a chair, holding a pose, staying balanced and walking). The benefits of all those positive messages lasted at least three weeks after the final session. Only those who wrote essays didn’t see any benefits. In two similar studies, seniors who were flashed negative subliminal messages saw lower memory performance. Self-stereotyping about age comes at us in two batches: the first when we hit a “number” that defines us as a member of senior group, such as collecting Social Security; the second when we ourselves start to buy into the negativity about aging by denying it as long as we can. While we can’t flash positive subliminal messages at ourselves on a computer screen, we can seek out the positive wherever we are.

Why must our bodies be cursed with all of this glorious food and drink in such a short time period? To make matters worse, the next few months will be bitter cold, making it more difficult to get motivated for jogging, hiking, and other healthy activities.
But you didn’t need me to tell you this. I’m sure whoever was steadfast in remaining thin this season has already made up their minds. Likewise, everyone who could care less about staying thin this year probably stopped reading roughly 200-words ago. More power to you. Except for the fact that you stopped reading – reading has been proven to improve your brain’s stamina

It’ll be near impossible for me to lose this holiday weight! I’ll be stuck at home shoving prime rib in my mouth while balancing a baby in my non-food designated hand. What’s a guy to do!?

DOES LIMITING SUGAR INCLUDE FRUIT? DEAR DR. ROACH: Medical advice is to reduce sugar consumption. Does this apply to 100 percent fruit juices, fresh fruit, sweetened cereal products or other fruit-sweetened products? -R.B. ANSWER: I think it makes sense to limit sugar intake, as most North Americans take in remarkably large quantities of sugar. Recently, while giving a lecture at the medical school, I noticed that the carbonated sodas served contained 45 grams of added sugar per can. That’s more than the American Heart Association recommends in a day (no more than 25 grams of added sugar per day for women, 40 grams a day for men)! Be careful of products that claim to be sweetened by fruit juice or fruit sugar; this still counts as added sugar. I do make an exception for fruits, as the body processes natural sugars from fruit differently. You can try this out at home by eating four medium-size oranges or drinking its equivalent in an 8-ounce (250 ml) glass of orange juice. I think you will find a big difference in how full you feel. Although reducing sugar is critical for diabetics and is very important for anyone trying to lose weight, even for people with no sugar or weight prob-

The ophthalmologist is giving a very standard and safe dose for AMD. The U.S. recommended daily allowance for zinc is 11 mg for men, 8 mg for women. Very high doses of zinc can be dangerous, but this dose is still in the safe zone.
