the department and toy stores in order to find that perfect gift. While out shopping, perhaps you’ve noticed the holiday music being piped through the store’s speakers. If so, it’s likely you’ve heard at least one selection from Tchaikovsky’s the Nutcracker. Tchaikovsky and the holidays just go together like peas and carrots. With that in mind, Snippetz decided to dance into the wintry world of Tchaikovsky and the Nutcracker.

to prepare him for a career as a civil servant. Tchaikovsky was technically too young to begin his studies there and was sent to the school’s preparatory academy, located 800 miles from his family. After completing his time at the prep school, Tchaikovsky transferred to the Imperial School to start his seven-year career there. Tragedy struck his family just two years into his term at the school when his mother died from cholera. He described her death as “the crucial event” that ultimately shaped the rest of his life. In fact, his first serious attempt at music composition was a waltz in her memory.

about a young girl’s Christmas Eve as she begins the transition from child to adult. Throughout the story, the girl Maria begins to see the world in a different light and eventually comes into her own, finding love in the form of the Nutcracker Prince. The first ballet was Alexandre Dumas Père’s adaptation of Hoffman’s story, set to Tchaikovsky’s music. The ballet was first performed outside of Russia in England in 1934. The San Francisco Ballet held the first performance in the United States in 1944.

You’ve probably heard his name but how much do you really know about the man behind the music? Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was born on May 7, 1840 in Votkinsk, Udmurtia, Russia. Although both of his parents, Ilya Petrovich and Alexandra Andreyevna were trained in the arts, including music, they didn’t push their son to pursue that course of study. However, at five years old, Tchaikovsky took it upon himself to insist that the family’s French governess Fanny Dürbach give him piano lessons. In many of the adaptations, however, they call her Clara.

• The first twinkling notes of “The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy” are performed on a celesta. It is a relative of the piano and adds a unique sound that makes this section of the score easily identifiable. • Tchaikovsky actually smuggled the celesta into Russia from Paris in order to accomplish the sound he desired to accompany the character of the Sugar Plum Fairy.

• The sound of the celesta is most commonly associated with the Sugar Plum Fairy but Tchaikovsky used it in other places in the ballet’s score as well.

s we near the beginning of a new calendar year, many begin thinking about how they may want to change their lives or the course of their lives beginning in January. One topic to look at is toxins. The more toxins we consume and hold onto, the faster we physically age. Toxins speed up the aging process as well as encourage disease in the body. We consume toxins and hold on to them, rather than release them, in multiple ways.

health difficulties. Drinking as pure water as you can is helpful in reducing toxicity. Aside from the food and drinks we consume that add toxicity to our bodies, if the mind is full of toxic thoughts and emotions, it begins transferring toxicity to the brain. As the brain receives toxic signals, it begins sending signals throughout the body to hold onto toxins rather than releasing them. Those toxins can build up in the intestines, kidneys, adrenals, liver or other areas and begin causing disease and illness. The toxins accelerate the aging process as they interfere with your ability to absorb sufficient nutrition. To begin reversing this process, look at diet, thought and behavior patterns, and Life Energy Flow Tai Yi.

We consume many toxins on a regular basis, some more than others. A person who eats much processed foods, fast foods, and sugar usually carries more toxins than a person who eats whole pure foods and avoids foods with many added preservatives and other unnecessary chemicals. Avoiding genetically modified products is suggested as well. Food is just one example.

The Tai Yi treatment Detox Life can help in beginning to shift this pattern of toxicity. Detox Life prepares your body and mind for a complete detox before you begin a physical detoxification. Some may choose to alter their diet to begin releasing toxins or to search the many detox suggestions that are available online and in books. Detox Life helps you prepare so you see stronger results while detoxing, improved physical condition, and prevent disease.

Drinking pure water is getting more and more difficult. In most areas, tap water has fluoride added to it. Many studies have shown that fluoride is a toxin that causes multiple

• It was American industrialist Jean Paul Getty who made the following sage observation: “If you can count your money, you don’t have a billion dollars.” • You’ve doubtless heard the term “bigwig” to refer to a person of importance, but you’ve probably never learned where the word originated. In the 18th century, King Louis XIV of France began wearing large wigs, and the fashion became a trend among the upper classes. At the time, wigs were made from human hair, which was very expensive to obtain; therefore, the larger the wig, the more hair was required and the more money the wearer had to spend to purchase it. • In 1950, a patent was issued for a fork that automatically spins to wind spaghetti onto it. • You might be surprised to learn that

• Medieval times, it seems, were suspicious times. When nobles gathered for social events, each person would pour a little bit of wine from his or her own cup into the cups of others -- this was a way to ensure that no one was poisoning the drinks. The tradition continues today (with less suspicion, one would hope) when people clink glasses after toast. • It wasn’t until 1933 that an act of Congress made the dime legal tender for all transactions. Before that, it could be used only if the item or items being purchased totaled less than $10. • Besides being former U.S. presidents, what do George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams have in common? As adults, they all collected and played marbles avidly. *** Thought for the Day: “I’m all in favor of keeping dangerous weapons out of the hands of fools. his is one of my dad’s favorite things so I try to make him a batch every year for Christmas. It is another one of those things that my mom taught my sisters and I to make when we were kids. Of course I’ve changed the recipe slightly as the years went by to make it yummier. It is very easy and inexpensive and makes a great gift. You can make it with any kind of nut instead of the peanuts if you have a favorite. To make this less fattening or non-dairy you can leave out the butter but it won’t be as rich.

Be creative, have fun and enjoy!!!

CELEBRATE SWEET SEASON WITH HOMEMADE CANDY

E

verywhere you look, there are holiday delicacies -- and a staggering, even alarming, array of sweets. There is eggnog in the dairy section, Italian Panettones on every bakery aisle and oodles of Christmas cookies for sale. But the star of all the Christmas confections, kind of like the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall, is the huge variety of holiday candies. Candy is a decadent pleasure throughout the year, but at Christmas-time it is a beloved staple, a classic confection. Candy canes, the most famous candy of the season, date back to the 17th century. Legend has it that a very wise minister gave sugar sticks to the restless children in his congregation. When making these homemade treats, he turned the top of the sticks downward to resemble a shepherd’s staff. Much later, stripes were added, and the candy cane led the way for the multitude of colorful hard sugar candy shaped like ribbons, bows and disks, indicative of the holiday season we enjoy today. Amazingly, well into the early 21st century, many of these candies are still manufactured or are made by skilled home cooks. During the holiday season, candy has become a special and festive part of the celebration of Christmas. Holiday candy may be the “once-a-year” luxurious chocolates you order from a specialty store. Or, the season may spark memories of a cherished recipe for homemade fudge or the divinity you make from your mother’s recipe. The idea of making homemade candy

may seem daunting. Many of the candies that our mothers and grandmothers made required a high level of skill and patience. Without the hands-on training passed down through generations, and with the pace of our modern lives, homemade candy at Christmas could quickly become a lost art. For those who want to preserve our past, Christmas is the best time to pull out the recipe for that sweet family favorite. Be daring, and try your hand at making candy. Your friends and family will be glad you did.

Home cooks have invented, and sometimes re-invented, many simple candy recipes. These are the best kind of recipes, ones that are not intimidating and are accessible even to novice cooks. Another important ingredient in a homemade candy recipe is that it can become a family tradition. Try this easy recipe for Christmas Confetti Candy. eniors have acquired so much “stuff” over the years that we have nearly everything we need ... and more. If you’ve held off buying a gift for a senior in your life because you don’t know what to get someone who already has everything, here are a few gift ideas that would be most welcome. • Coupons for cab rides, or gift certificates for restaurant meals, laundry services, auto detailing, spa day or hair salon services. • Gift basket created especially for your seniors, such as gourmet food, cheese, jams or chocolate. Or consider a subscription to a quarterly or monthly gift club. Options range from fruit baskets or flowers to bacon, coffee and cigars. • Pay for a year of cable TV, the daily newspaper, magazine subscription or Netflix. • Two tickets to a play or other event

• Pay for a senior’s lifelong learning class, either at the senior center or nearby university, and arrange for transportation. • Put together a box of useful things, like stamps, note cards, address labels, batteries, razor blades and calendar with large print. Include a list of important phone numbers printed out in a large font that can be taped to the inside of a cupboard door. (Keep the file and make changes whenever your senior needs to update it.) • Make single serving meals for the freezer. • Don’t leave out your own participation and that of your children. A small coupon book full of services you can do year round, such as cleaning, painting a room, weeding the garden, raking leaves and checking expiration dates on food in the cupboard all will be appreciated. SILENT NIGHTYOU’RE KIDDING RIGHT?

I

By Ron Ross

sn’t everyone’s favorite Christmas carol “Silent Night”? When we sing it we always use that soft breathy voice that indicates we understand and enjoy the beauty of silence. A few seconds after the “Amen” we’re back to the reality of the noisy world we live in. Look, no listen to all the noise we hear every day. We get up in the morning and immediately turn on the TV or radio. Even the shortest journey in our car is accompanied with the noise of a high-end automotive sound system. Some of you wear a new kind of head jewelry called “Bluetooth Technology” or I-pods that pipe noise directly into your head. Most stores play “background” music and some even broadcast extra-loud advertisements on strategically placed TVs throughout their stores. Now farmers no longer have to plow in silence because their tractors come equipped with quality sound systems. We may breathlessly sing, “Silent night”, but we live in the noisiest society in history. So I am calling for a little silence, a little peace and quiet, an uninterrupted hour or two with absolutely no noise. But I’m not only calling for it, I’m seeking it, I am trying to create it. Yesterday the wife went to the Mall which meant the house was going to be empty for at least two hours. “Ahhh…some peace and quiet”, I thought as I made my way to my favorite recliner and settled down for an uninterrupted hour of silence. I kicked the footrest out so I could lie nearly prostrate in the plush comfort of the chair. It took a few minutes to get comfortable and settle in and soon my eyes closed as I en-

joyed the superb sound of silence; it was marvelous. Unfortunately, silence is not easy to find, what with several phones in every home, TVs in every room, children, co-workers, machinery, barking dogs, etc. Perhaps the reason it is so difficult to find a place of silence is because of the high value of a little peace and quiet. You see, valuable things are always scarce, and silence can be very valuable. Here are four reasons that silence is valuable: First of all, silence rests the mind. The constant noise of life tires the brain and weakens its ability to do the work it is designed to do. Silence renews and refreshes the brain for more productive, creative labor. Second, silence improves conversation. We’ve all been around someone who just plain flat talks too much, who wears us out with their words. Someone once said, “He had occasional flashes of silence that made his conversation perfectly delightful.” The best conversationalists are those who know how to listen. Third, silence settles arguments. You can stop a raucous argument or quiet down an angry person with silence. “Silence” said Josh Billings, “is one of the hardest arguments to refute.” And last, silence preserves integrity. One hundred years before the birth of Christ a writer penned, “I have often regretted my speech, never my silence.”* We have all said at one time or another, “I wish I would have just kept my big mouth shut.” Mark Twain said it best, “Tis better to be silent and thought a fool, than to speak up and remove all doubt.” But if silence bothers you and you find it hard to endure, do not worry, the noise will return soon enough. My quiet silence was broken by the most annoying sound ever invented by man – the ringtone on my cellphone.

THE FACTS ABOUT

DONATIONS

Y

ou only have two weeks left to donate and take a tax deduction for 2014. Aside from the churches, Goodwill Industries and Salvation Army, organizations and foundations which promote education, science, literary works, prevention of animal cruelty, etc. are considered charities as well. Altruism is always important- unfortunately not all altruism is tax deductible.

The financial record can include a canceled check, bank statement and credit card statement showing the organization, date and amount. For payroll deductions, a paystub or a W-2 showing the amount is sufficient. And for cell phone or text donations, the IRS is allowing copies of phone records or statements if it shows the organization, date and amount. Myth Buster: The days of donating $20 a week to church, and then deducting $1,040 are long gone. Since 2007, taxpayers must have a receipt for every dol-

lar donated. An organization is required by law to give a written statement for any single donation over $75. Read that again. The organization is required. It is easy to think this means taxpayers do not need to keep receipts under $75. You do.
