A palindrome is a word that is spelled the same both forwards and backwards. For example, racecar is a palindrome. But racecar is pretty tame when compared to the longest palindrome found in any language.

That word happens to have a very specific meaning which is “doorto-door-salesman of lye for soap” in Finnish and looks like this: saippuakivikauppias.

The ancient Greeks didn’t set out to confuse people when they created their alphabet. So even though there are things about words and language that seem a little strange, there’s a reason behind all of it. And, of course, Snippetz decided that, since we deal in words, it might be good to learn a little more about them and the languages they make up!

COULD YOU BE MORE SPECIFIC?

But why is it called an ampersand?

That word is actually a mash-up of the phrase “and per se and,” which literally means that the character “&” by itself is the word “and.”

You say “octopuses,” I say “octopi” Most people think that the plural form of “octopus” is “octopi.”

But it’s actually not. You might be tempted to assume that, if “octopi” is wrong, then the correct word is “octopuses.” Academically, that’s the agreed-upon term, but technically speaking, they’re both wrong.

“Octopus” is derived from the Greek term “eight legs” and so the pluralized form should follow the Greek rules, making it “octopodes.”

With slotted spoon, transfer mushrooms to bowl. Add sherry to skillet; boil 1 minute. Add cream; cook 3 minutes or until sauce thickens slightly. Stir in peas, salt, ground red pepper and mushrooms. Remove from heat.

t seems that everything we eat and drink these days wants a piece of our heart. There are the bad-for-us foods like addictive chips, irresistible burgers, gorgeous steaks and seductive fried chicken. They’re so easy to see coming, but we fall for them anyway.

Then there are the good guys, who have their charms and who claim to give us what’s good for us, like red wine and chocolate. It’s so easy to commit to one of them because they have what we want! But the truth is that when it comes to our heart, there are only a few trueblue choices we should stay with for the long haul. As confusing and abundant as the information is that says this or that is good for us, it all boils down to a few simple qualities that make a good match for heart health.

1. Omega-3s: These are the fatty acids that possess a good kind of fat that helps prevent clogging of the arteries. These are found in fish, such as salmon, albcore tuna, herring and trout. However, Omega-3s can be found in tofu, nuts and flaxseed, and canola oil as well. Incorporate these foods into your weekly menus every chance you get.

2. Fruits and Vegetables of All Kinds: Most people don’t come close to the recommended amounts suggested by the American Heart Association, which is four to five 1/2 cup to 1 cup servings per day. Try declaring one day a week a vegetarian day where all meals will be meatless, or look for meal ideas where the vegetable is the main player, like in stir-frys and salads, or bowls of fruit with grains and berries for breakfast.

Should they be considered employees instead? Mistaken classifications have spurred renewed action by the Department of Labor with their misclassification initiative. Armed with a $14 million dollar budget, and a new team of 100 auditors, the initiative aims to crack down on companies wrongfully classifying employees as independent contractors- Intentional or not.

According to the Tax Foundation, in Washington, DC, we will work from January 1st to April 21th, simply to earn enough money to pay our tax obligations, 111 days! Americans will pay $3.0 trillion in federal taxes and $1.5 trillion in state taxes, for a total tax bill of $4.5 trillion, or 30.2 percent of total earnings. I do not believe that even Caesar would dare to have asked so much from Rome.

Sadly the taxman must be paid, but here are a few tax credits that just might help lighten your load.

Saver’s Tax Credit How would you like to get paid to save? The Saver’s Tax Credit does just that. If your adjusted gross income is $30,000 or less ($60,000 for married couples) you are eligible for a tax credit of up to $1,000 just for saving for your retirement. It makes no difference if you contributed to a 401(k), 403(b), traditional IRA or Roth IRA, you can claim a tax credit of between 10% to 50% of every dollar saved in a qualified retirement plan.

Earned Income Tax Credit How would you like to get paid to work? I mean over and above your wages. For those of you who are single and have an adjusted gross income less than $14,590, or $20,200 for those married and filing jointly you could be eligible for an Earned Income Tax Credit ranging from $496 to $6,143.

And the credit is refundable The income limits for the Earned Income Tax Credit is low but there are numerous exceptions. It would be well worth your time to see if you qualify.

For example a couple filing jointly with three or more children and an adjusted gross income of $52,427 would still qualify for the credit.

Child Tax Credit How would you like to get paid for having kids? That’s right there is a tax credit to help offset the high cost

How would you like to get paid to go to school? There is a credit to help offset the tuition costs of college as well as many other related educational expenses that have been incurred throughout 2014.

The American Opportunity Credit is available for individuals who have a modified adjusted gross income below $90,000 ($180,000 for those filing jointly). For those with higher incomes the credit is still available but phases out as their income rises. The $2,500 credit, like the child tax, is refundable. However it is limited. Only 40% of the credit that exceeds your tax liability can be refunded.

Supreme Court Justice Learned Hand wrote “Anyone may arrange his affairs so that his taxes shall be as low as possible; he is not bound to choose that pattern which best pays the treasury … nobody owes any public duty to pay more than the law demands.” Do your homework. There are many credits and deductions that are available to you, but you have to do the research.

TRI-LAKES CARES RECEIVES $33,000 GRANT FROM THE WALMART FOUNDATION TO SUPPORT MEDICAL CLINIC Monument, CO – February 10, 2015 – Tri-Lakes Cares recently received a $33,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation’s State Giving Program to assist with medical services for low-income residents of the Tri-Lakes region. Specifically, this grant will positively impact the local community by supporting the in-house medical clinic and provide financial assistance to low-income households so they are able to afford medical services such as, doctor’s visits, diagnostic procedures, medical supplies and equipment, dental work, prescriptions, vision care and more.

“Tri-Lakes Cares is delighted to have Walmart’s generous support of our medical clinic and other medical services,” said Haley Chapin, Executive Director of TriLakes Cares. “Accessible and affordable medical care is a critical need for many of our clients. This grant will allow us to assist many more people than we otherwise could!”

Tri-Lakes Cares (“TLC”) is a community based, volunteer supported resource center whose mission is to improve people’s lives through emergency, self-sufficiency, and relief programs. Launched in 1984, TLC has been serving the Tri-Lakes area of El Paso County for 30 years, providing

for the basic needs of low-income people.

Tri-Lakes Cares offers a food pantry, medical clinic, case management, housing and utility assistance, seasonal programs, and more to help people manage and overcome poverty.

While the Affordable Care Act and TLC’s in-house Health Care Guide are helping uninsured clients register for health care, there are still many households without coverage in our community. Additionally, some insured households have trouble making co-payments, or have high deductibles before their insurance coverage begins. TLC’s medical services program addresses the two biggest barriers that clients in our area face when trying to access health care: affordability and local access.

Tri-Lakes Cares provides the only free, local clinic in the Tri-Lakes Region, which includes the communities of Monument, Palmer Lake, and Woodmoor; northwestern rural El Paso County; the U.S. Air Force Academy; and parts of the Gleneagle and Black Forest neighborhoods.

When a client’s needs are beyond TLC’s scope, they are referred to other providers within the local region when possible, and provide financial assistance so that patients can get the help they need at a price they can afford.

The Walmart Foundation’s State Giving Program supports organizations that create opportunities so people can live better, awarding grants that have a longlasting, positive impact on communities across the U.S. in the last fiscal year, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation gave $19.3 million to Colorado nonprofits. To be considered for support, perspective grantee organizations must submit applications through the Walmart Foundation State Giving Program’s online grant application. Applicants must have a current 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status in order to meet the program’s minimum eligibility criteria.
