hile the name might not be very familiar, Salvador Dalí’s artwork probably is. He’s the man behind the pictures of the melting clocks. But his incredible talent and imagination didn’t stop there. Dalí created hundreds of interesting and sometimes disturbing images that helped define the surrealist movement. But it wasn’t just his artwork that was unique and a little bit strange. Dalí himself was a quirky fellow, to say the least. With a black

FROM REAL TO SURREAL
The Surreal World of Salvador Dalí... Continued from Page 1
In 1922, Dalí enrolled in the San Fernando Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid. There, he was also introduced to several other artistic styles, like Metaphysics and Cubism. His talent made him a standout, as did his eccentric and bizarre ways. But his talent couldn’t save him from his lack of humility. About one year after he enrolled in the Academy, he was suspended for criticizing his teachers and publicly questioning the academy’s choice in professors. In 1926, Dalí reentered the academy but was permanently expelled when he claimed that the professors were idiots and that he was far more qualified than they were.
handlebar mustache that he kept waxed to shiny perfection, Dalí was known for his wide-eyed expression that he routinely sported when being photographed. So where did he get the inspiration for his paintings? Snippetz decided that it was high time we stepped into Dalí’s world to share all the wonder and intrigue that this artist infused into his works and his life.

Over the next three years, Dalí traveled to Paris several times and met up with several influential painters, such as Pablo Picasso and René Magritte, that latter of whom introduced Dalí to surrealism. Up until then, Dalí had focused on Impressionism, Futurism and Cubism. Surrealism became a part of his repertoire and he became associated with three general themes in his artwork: man’s universe and sensations; sexual symbolism; and ideographic imagery.
Dalí’s mother, Felipa Domènech Ferrés, however, was much more lenient and let her son grow into the unique person he was to become.

Salvador Domingo Felipe Jacinto Dalí i Domènech was born on May 11, 1904, in Figueres, Spain. His father, Salvador Dalí i Cusí was a lawyer and notary whose practical side didn’t mesh well with his son’s more eccentric personality.
One stand-out experience that Dalí claimed help shape his later life was a trip he took with his parents to the grave of his older brother, also name Salvador, who had died as a toddler, just nine months before Dalí was born. His parents told him that he was the reincarnation of his brother and Dalí took that to heart, later on saying that he and his late brother “resembled each other like two drops of water, but we had different reflections,” and “[he] was probably a first version of myself, but conceived too much in the absolute.”
In 1929, Dalí entered his first Surrealistic period in which he created small oil paintings consisting of elements from his dreams put together into a collage. His major contribution to the Surrealist movement of that time was what he
At an early age, it became clear to Dalí’s parents that their son had an extreme talent in art. They sent him to drawing school to hone his craft. In 1917, Dalí’s father organized an exhibition of his son’s charcoal drawings in their family home. In 1919, while just a teenager, Dalí held his first public exhibition at the Municipal Theater in his hometown.

called the “paranoiac-critical method.” He described this as a mental exercise of accessing the subconscious as a way to enhance his artistic creativity.
AN ANDALUSIAN DOG AND A RUSSIAN IMMIGRANT That same year, Dalí expanded his artistic endeavors into the world of filmmaking. He teamed up with Luis Buñuel on two film projects, called “Un Chien andalou (An Andalusian Dog)” and “L’Age d’or (The Golden Age).” Dalí also met the only woman he would ever claim to love romantically, a Russian immigrant 10 years his senior, named Elena Dmitrievna Diakonova. Diakonova wasn’t exactly available at the time, though. She was actually married to Surrealist writer Paul Éluard, one of Dalí’s first influences into surrealistic writing. Dalí fell hard for Diakonova (affectionately called Gala), and pursued her relentlessly. To get her attention, he was said to have covered himself in goat dung, waxed his armpit hair and dye the underlying skin blue and wore flowers on his head. Gala couldn’t resist his attempts and soon left her husband to marry Dalí in

a civil ceremony in 1934.
WHAT ABOUT THE MELTING CLOCKS? About two years after his introduction to the Surrealist movement, Dalí painted one of his most memorable and identifiable pieces: “The Persistence of Memory.” The painting shows melting pocket watches flowing through a landscape setting. Experts seem to agree that Dalí’s intention with the piece was to illustrate how he felt that time was not rigid and as easily destructible as anything else. The personality outshines the artwork Not to say that Dalí’s artwork wasn’t as spectacular as it always had been, but his flamboyant style, kooky habits and colorful personality brought him increasing notoriety through the midto-late 1930s. His long, black handlebar mustache was just one element that lent itself to the overall persona that was Salvador Dalí. He would sometimes show up to public events wearing a ridiculously long cape or carrying a walking stick. Another time, at the 1934 New York exhibition of his works and the so-called social “Dalí Ball,” he showed up wearing a bra enclosed in a glass case. At the London International Surrealist Exhibition, he gave his lecture wearing a full deep-sea diving suit.
CLASH OF IDEOLOGIES At the onset of the Spanish Civil War in 1936, Dalí found himself in the minority as one of the few members of Spain’s cultural elite to support fascism after the Nationalist victory in
1939. The members of the Surrealist movement were closely connected to the French Communist Party and with that clash of ideals, they decided to expel Dalí from their movement. In fact, many of his former compatriots began issuing harsh statements against him, up until his death and sometimes even beyond. While Dalí continued to paint throughout the remainder of his life, he dabbled in other mediums as well. In 1960, he began work on his Theater and Museum in Figueres, which represented his single largest project and consumed most of his time through 1974, when it opened.
FINAL YEARS In 1980, Dalí’s health had taken a turn for the worse. He noticed that his right hand began trembling, as though he had developed Parkinson’s disease. Supposedly, Gala, then well into her 80s, had been dosing him with a cocktail of dangerous, unprescribed medications that ultimately and irreversibly damaged his nervous system. His artistic capacity never recovered.

Following Gala’s death in 1982, Dalí seemed to have given up on life. He purposefully dehydrated himself, which some claim was a suicide attempt. In November 1988, Dalí was admitted to the hospital with heart failure. On January 23, 1989, Dalí died at the age of 84.

SNIPPETZ™ WEEKLY MAGAZINE ate painful emotions or worry? Do your actions or inactions lead to depression? Do you carry false beliefs that limit the potential you can see in yourself and the quality of life you want to attain? When you look at thinking patterns, ask yourself if those patterns are modeled after your parents’ patterns. Many people unconsciously take on their parents’ painful patterns whether they want to or not. Patterns are modeled, which speak much louder than words.

o you find yourself battling stress, worry, and scattered thoughts on a daily or almost daily basis? Maybe you find yourself getting too caught up in what other people might think of you or your battling to find your independence? Perhaps you work in a toxic environment and you fear being laid off or fired for the smallest infraction? All of these and much more can cause a foggy head or foggy brain. When we are in supreme health (Life Energy Flow Tai Yi), we don’t jump from worry to worry, have a foggy head, constant scattered thoughts, or a low immune system. When our brain is not functioning at its optimal level, it can create a compromised immune sys-
tem, headaches, lack of focus among other ailments. There are several ways to counter a foggy head.
The Life Energy Flow Tai Yi treatment, Brain Fog, can assist those who have a foggy brain. The treatment will help the brain to slowly release toxins and create a clear channel to facilitate clearer thinking and understanding of what needs to change in your life. If you do
First, look at your diet. Does it contain a lot of processed and sugared foods? Do you purchase lower quality foods because purchasing higher quality and organic foods is ‘too expensive’? When you eat, are you under a strict time limit and/or stress and you eat too quickly? Modifying your diet and your way of eating can help with clearing a foggy head or foggy brain.

As one particular teacher says, “This is your life. This is about your life. And this is about the quality of your life.”

THE SPICE OF LIFE
1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 teaspoon garlic powder 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1 teaspoon ground coriander 1 teaspoon smoked paprika 1/2 teaspoon oregano 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon cayenne 1 egg, lightly beaten 1 tablespoon milk 1/4 cup olive oil or vegetable oil 4 mint leaves, thinly sliced
2. Place the egg in another shallow dish with remaining 1/2 teaspoons of salt and pepper, and whisk in the milk. Dip each piece of chicken into egg mixture, then coat in crumb-spice mixture, pressing lightly to be sure crumbs adhere well.
While many well-known foods have cancer-fighting and immune-boosting qualities, there are some tasty additives that elevate mild to magnificent and palatable to unforgettable, and also are very good for us. For some time now, doctors have known that there is a scientific basis for why people have used herbs and spices for more than just seasoning for hundreds, if not thousands, of years.
3. Heat oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add chicken in a single layer and cook until crumbs are golden brown and the interior is no longer pink, about 3 minutes per side.
That brings us to using them in recipes. The world of spices and herbs is a big one, and most of us only have an inkling of all the choices available and how to use them. Ethnic cuisines have been using native herbs and spices to prepare both beverages and sweet and savory dishes for millennia. Even though America is a melting pot, we still consider many herbs and spices as exotic. For example, while we are now familiar with herbs like rosemary and use it often in both savory and sweet dishes, most of us consider mint, another versatile ingredient, for use only in sweet dishes. Mediterranean cooks use mint often and deliciously in savory dishes. The use of cloves and cinnamon is common in Indian savory dishes. The list goes on of the myriad of spices and the ways we can use them to punch up flavor and keep us healthy. My recipe for Spice Breaded Chicken Fingers with Quinoa and Green Onions puts an international and nutritious spin on a childhood favorite. You can change the spice combination to make the dish reflect your favorite flavors from around the world. So find an ethnic grocery and explore its spice aisle, and buy a cookbook featuring unique ways to use spices or herb. Make the 2015 the year that you spice up your food ... and your life!
SPICE BREADED CHICKEN FINGERS 1-1/4 pound chicken tenderloins (12 pieces) or 1 1/4 pounds of boneless, skinless chicken thighs cut into 1-inch wide pieces 1 cup dry, unseasoned breadcrumbs (Japanese Panko breadcrumbs work best)

1. Combine the breadcrumbs, 1/2 teaspoon each of the salt and pepper, along with garlic powder, cumin, coriander, smoked paprika, oregano, cinnamon and cayenne in a shallow dish or pie plate.
“Get healthy” and “eat well” are common buzzwords at the start of a new year. Magazine and news articles make it seem as though you need only to eat fruits, vegetables, fiber and omega-3s. But that’s not the whole picture.
Besides being zesty and hot, intense and complex, and even lovely to look at, herbs and spices have proven health benefits. In addition to preventive attributes, they also may be effective in managing, if not curing, chronic disease. When using spices and herbs, a little goes a long way toward receiving their antioxidant benefits.

When I got home I couldn’t wait to tell Dad how brave I was. By one small step off the high board I went from “I’m afraid” to “I’m courageous.” You will too, but you must take the first step. Author of one of the most read books in history, Dale Carnegie, said, “Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy.”

*** DEAR DR. ROACH: My dad has an extreme case of COPD and is on oxygen. He gets winded just walking across the house. Dad lives in Montana; I live in Florida and would like him to come visit me during the cold Montana winters. I have heard that it would be easier for him to breathe at a lower altitude. But people have told him that if he comes to Florida, he would never be able to go back to Montana because he wouldn’t be used to the altitude any DEAR DR. ROACH: You’ve dis- longer. I am healthy, els at high altitude, like some cities 75 (take no meds), exercise with in Montana, can be a real problem weights, do swimming and running for people with any kind of chronic regularly, and since 2007 have been lung disease. SLEEP MEDICATIONS LINKED TO FALLS
ANSWER: Unfortunately, I do see a problem. Odds are that you won’t have a problem taking this medication; it’s cheap and is effective for you. However, there is unequivocal, abundant, incontrovertible evidence that antihistamines like doxylamine or diphenhydramine increase fall risk. If you drive, they increase accident risk. They also can cause confusion. Although the benefit to you from quitting is small, if I can get enough people to minimize their sleep medications, I know I will prevent some falls. Falls are so often the first step in a progression from health to disability that I want to do all I can to prevent them. Adequate lighting in the house at nighttime, especially between the bedroom and bathroom, avoiding obstructions like area rugs and the addition of stairway railings and tub grab bars all help reduce fall risk. Exercise programs -- like the kind you are doing, but also tai chi -- are great at preventing falls. So is getting your eyes checked.
altitude would be similar to dialing up the oxygen a bit. He may certainly prefer Florida’s winters to Montana’s. We begin to be accustomed to high altitude in a few days, but full acclimatization takes weeks. Your dad will be able to return home after his visit. The booklet on COPD explains both emphysema and chronic bronchitis, the two elements of COPD, in detail. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada. with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow 4-6 weeks for delivery.
*** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

Of course, the cost of such haberdashery could mount significantly, so one enterprising British soul registered a design (which was much less expensive than registering a patent) for a “duplex hat” -- an elaborate contraption that, by means of hidden springs, could convert from a top hat to a bowler hat to suit the circumstances. • Before you ink yourself, you might want to consider this: The cost of removing an unwanted tattoo can be up to 10 times as much as it cost to get the tattoo in the first place.
• You’ve doubtless heard of peak oil -- that theoretical point at which the global production of oil reaches its maximum output, after which production gradually declines -- but what about peak poultry? Those who study such things say that the world hit its peak production of chicken for human consumption in 2006. • The first canned meat product, known as Hormel Spiced Ham, was developed in 1937. Several imitators followed, and the executives at the Hormel Company, concerned about the new competition, decided to have a competition to rename the product. The winner, Broadway actor Kenneth Daigneau (and brother to the company’s vice president), won $100 for the winning entry: Spam. *** Thought for the Day: “A good speech should be like a woman’s skirt: long enough to cover the subject and short enough to create interest.” -- Winston Churchill (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

A common question regarding rental deductions is repairs versus improvements. Repairs are expensed and deducted in the current tax year, whereas improvements are capitalized and depreciated over time. It is human nature to want a bird in the hand versus two in the bush, and therefore most rental property owners want to expense as much as they humanly can to gain the immediate tax benefit.

PIKES PEAK POSSE OF THE WESTERNERS PRESENTS: Wasp of the Ferry Command by Sarah Rickman March 9, 6:00 pm Colorado Springs Masonic Hall 1130 Panorama Drive Colorado Springs, Colorado. 80904 The story of the WASP who ferried aircraft for the Air Transport Command is the real WASP story, in the opinion of this author/historian. Usually it is overshadowed by the popular, glamorized version of the WASP story — the story of Jackie Cochran’s 1,000 girl pilot recruits and their trials and tribulations. My presentation is about the 303 WASP of the Ferry Command, and in particular about the 126 WASP who ferried pursuit aircraft like the P-51 from the factories to the docks for shipment abroad. The P-51s those women delivered throughout 1944 ended up escorting American bombers all the way to Berlin and back, protecting them from German attack. Ultimately this key factor led to the defeat of Nazi

The story won the Greyden Press Best Novel Competition in 2013, and was published in June 2014.
