ccording to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s 2014 National Diabetes Statistics Report, an estimated 29 million people in the United States have diabetes. Of those 29 million, 1.7 million people aged 20 years or older were newly diagnosed in 2012. As if those numbers aren’t disturbing enough, another 86 million adults in the U.S. – more than one in three – have prediabetes.

It’s clear that the number of diagnoses of the disease is on the rise. So what, if anything, can we do to prevent it? You’d probably agree that the key to prevention is to truly understand what diabetes is and what causes it. Diabetes – technically termed diabetes mellitus – is a group of metabolic diseases that cause a person to have high blood sugar (blood glucose). High blood sugar can result from an inadequate production of insulin or because the body’s cells do not respond properly to insulin, and sometimes it’s a combination of both.

Type 2 diabetes, formerly called non-insulin-dependent or adult-onset diabetes mellitus, accounts for about 90 to 95 percent of all diagnosed diabetes cases. This type usually develops due to an insulin resistance, a disorder in which the cells within the muscles, liver, and fatty tissue don’t metabolize insulin properly. This results in an increased need for insulin and the beta cells in the pancreas that produce insulin can’t keep up with the higher demand. In some people, a resistance to insulin plays a larger role in the development of diabetes than the lack of the beta cells to produce sufficient insulin, and for others, it’s just the opposite.

Prediabetes refers to a blood glucose level that is above normal but not high enough to be classified as diabetes.

There are three main types of diabetes: type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes.

Gestational diabetes is a form of glucose intolerance that some pregnant women develop during the second or third trimester.

Elevated blood sugar levels can pose a danger to both the mother and the baby. After giving birth, about 5 to 10 percent of women will continue to experience elevated blood glucose levels, which usually results in a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes.

Willis wasn’t the first person to notice the “sweet” characteristic of a diabetic’s blood and urine. In fact, the ancient Chinese people noticed that ants were attracted to some people’s urine because it was sweet.

Although they hadn’t fully identified what the disease was, they did give the phenomenon a name: “sweet urine disease.”

WHO IS AT RISK FOR DEVELOPING DIABETES? There are several known risk factors that could lead to the development of type 1 diabetes including the following: • Anyone with a relative who has been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes has a slightly increased risk.

• The presence of a certain gene can indicate an increased risk.

• People who live further away from the equator tend to have a higher risk than people living closer to it.

• Type 1 diabetes can appear at any age but there are two peaks at when it tends to occur more: between 4 and 7 years old, and between 10 and 14 years old.

During the second century A.D., Aretus the Cappadocian, a Greek physician, noted that people with the disease experienced increased urination, called polyuria today.

He named the ailment “diabetes,” which means “siphon” in Greek.

There is an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes for people who are overweight or obese. Coupled with physical inactivity and eating the wrong types

• Overweight people will all develop diabetes eventually

Additionally, the risk increases as people get older and for men who testosterone levels are low. Other risk factors include smoking, depression and stress, and chronic lack of sleep.

FICTION Developing type 1 diabetes doesn’t depend on a person’s weight. Eating foods that are high in calories and fat can lead a person to become overweight, which can increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes but there is nothing definite about that. The majority of overweight people do not develop type 2 diabetes and many people that do develop it were never overweight to begin with.

Just as it sounds, gestational diabetes only occurs during pregnancy. Scientists have found that women whose diets before getting pregnant were high in animal fat and cholesterol were at a higher risk than women whose diets were lower in those two elements.

HOW CAN DIABETES BE PREVENTED? There is no known way to prevent type 1 diabetes, although several clinical trials are currently underway with subsequent studies planned.

The Diabetes Prevention Program is a major research study conducted by the CDC and has shown that, for people at high risk of developing diabetes, lifestyle interventions (like a change in diet) that lead to weight loss and increased physical activity prevented or delayed type 2 diabetes.

In some instances, blood glucose levels of those individuals at a higher risk were returned to within the normal range.

FACT OR FICTION? Rumors about diabetes are common and it’s easy to get confused about what’s fact and what’s fiction. Here’s a bit of clarity into some of those rumors.

They are tender and sweeter, and often hardly resemble the same vegetable you find in the grocery in the middle of summer.

The greens family of cruciferous vegetables also includes broccoli, Brussels sprouts and cabbage. They’re a great way to add antioxidants to your diet, and contain significant amounts of vitamins A and C, as well as potassium and fiber.

If you’re planning a vegetable garden, planting greens is an easy way to get it started. In the coldest regions, some varieties of greens can be planted after the threat of frost and will be ready by late spring. In more temperate regions, they can be planted in the fall. Once the plants are established, they can take a few days of freezing temperatures. You can even plant them in already established perennial beds.

Some, like chard and kale, are quite lovely to look at.

When cooking with greens, the sky’s the limit. They can be sauteed, pureed, steamed and tossed in salads. With many varieties to choose from, now is the time to replace the spinach in your standard recipes with collards, turnip greens or kale. You also might

2/3 package or more of whole-wheat, thin spaghetti 16 ounces fresh collard greens (about 20 big leaves) 1/4 cup pine nuts 3 tablespoons olive oil 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes 5 small cloves garlic, minced 1 teaspoon lemon zest 1 1/2 teaspoons sea salt 1 teaspoon black pepper 1/2 teaspoon agave syrup or honey 3 ounces Parmesan cheese 2 lemons, cut into wedges

1. Bring a big pot of salted water to a boil, and cook pasta according to package directions. Drain quickly, reserving a bit of cooking water, and set aside.

2. Cut out center rib of each collard green.

Stack a few greens at a time and roll them up into a cigar-like shape. Slice across the roll as thinly as possible (1/8 to 1/4 inch).

Shake up the greens and give them a few chops so the strands aren’t so long.

3. Heat a heavy-bottomed 12-inch skillet over medium heat and toast pine nuts until they start to turn golden and fragrant. Pour nuts out of skillet and save for later.

4. Return skillet to medium heat and pour in 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Sprinkle in a big pinch of red pepper flakes, garlic and lemon zest, and stir. Once oil is hot enough to shimmer, toss in all the collard greens.

Sprinkle greens with salt, pepper and agave or honey. Saute greens for about three minutes, stirring often to keep from clumping.

5. Remove pan from heat. Scoop greens into pasta pot and toss with another drizzle of olive oil, adding pasta water if necessary. Divide onto plates, top with pine nuts and Parmesan shavings, and serve with two big lemon wedges per person. Serves 4.

ronia or Chokeberry bush is a cold hardy deciduous shrub that has dark green glossy foliage in the summer and delicate white flowers in the spring. It’s not the same as the Chokecherry we all have in our backyards. It is a multiseason shrub that is often overlooked.

Aronia is very adaptable to light and water conditions. It can do well anywhere from full sun to part sun to shade! It has moderate water requirements, but it will also tolerate a wet site. This can make it a good option for a full sun and wet site or a shady and slightly dry site, where many plants won’t grow.

Directions Wash fruit and cover with water; simmer 15 minutes. Strain juice. Measure juice into a 6- to 8-quart kettle. Add pectin and stir. Bring to boil, add sugar, stir, and bring to a rolling boil. Boil exactly 2 minutes.

ARONIA BERRY BREAD Ingredients 2 cups flour 1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1 egg 1/8 cup shortening 3/4 cup orange juice 1 cup sugar 1 cup aronia berries or one cup of juice 1 cup nuts Directions Sift together flour, baking powder, salt and baking soda. In blender, combine egg, shortening, orange juice, and sugar. Add Aronia berries & nuts and chop briefly.

Empty into flour mixture. Mix by hand until moistened. Bake in a greased 9×5 pan at 350F for 50 to 60 minutes.

t’s probably not surprising to hear that in 2012, the IRS assessed 37.9 million penalties against taxpayers that totaled a whopping $26.8 billion. Many of those taxpayers are typically within compliance, year after year. uickly now, which would you rather have at the end of 31 days – a million dollars or a penny that has been doubled each and every day? If you are like most people you would have chosen the $1 million. Unfortunately, like most people you would have chosen poorly. That humble penny, doubling every day, would have grown to over $10 million -$10,737,418.24 to be exact. Don’t believe me? Do the math. One cent becomes two, two becomes four, four becomes eight, eight sixteen and on it goes until 5 million becomes 10 million. That is the power of compounded interest, a power that is often overlooked and grossly misunderstood when we talk about money.

Here are a few other rules of money that are oftentimes overlooked.

IS IT A NEED OR IS IT A WANT How we choose to spend our money is a choice. By understanding the difference between what is really needed and what it is we want we can avoid becoming a victim of circumstance. Our financial needs are really quite simple, food, shelter and clothing. Everything else is merely a want; however, our wants can be endless. Too often I find that many have put themselves in an unnecessary position of hardship (read debt) because they failed to realize the difference between what is needed and what is wanted. By making the choice to live well within your means you can put yourself in the position of financial control. And that is a strong financial place to be.

THE ENDLESS SEARCH FOR MORE It is only natural to want a better life. A raise at work or a new position may well make it possible to get a nicer home or a better car. Unfortunately, for too many, it becomes far too easy to presume on the future – that those raises and promotions will continue – and establish a lifestyle based upon those assumptions. When the raises and promotions don’t come they oftentimes put themselves in the position where debt is used to satisfy their expectations.

Thus creating a lifestyle, based upon debt, that can lead to financial ruin. It is better to find happiness somewhere other than in our possessions.

SUNKEN COST MYTH We have all been in situations where we have incurred expenses that can never be recovered. Whether it be a car that needs a new motor, an investment that only goes South or something else that seems to require an endless stream of money. The sunken cost myth is just that, a myth, a belief that somehow if we only invest more time, more money or more effort we can recover what has been promised. That is a fallacy. Don’t throw good money after bad.

In investing, I find too often investors will hold onto an investment and even invest more with the hopes that they will at some point at least break even. The cost unfortunately was lost opportunity and better use of resources. Make your decision to invest your time, your money, or your talents based upon the facts today and not upon your choices made yesterday.

With every financial choice comes risk, especially when we make the decision to invest. When we accept a greater risk with our investments it is reasonable to expect a potentially greater return. If you choose to invest in US government bonds you can expect a high degree of safety and a very low return on your investment. When you invest in a US corporation you have the opportunity for a much higher return, however, that return carries with it the risk of losing some or even all of your investment. I would encourage you to avoid investments that promise high guaranteed returns with little or no risk. There ain’t no such thing as a free lunch.

Sadly money does not come with operating instructions. For most of us a lot of time was spent on learning how to make money.

Unfortunately, throughout that education, not a lot of time was spent on how to manage money and use it effectively. Make the time to learn how to make sound financial choices. FUNERAL PLANNING Planning a funeral isn’t anyone’s idea of fun, but it’s one of those life obligations that need to be done -- and preferably in advance. Early planning can help ease some of the stresses at a very difficult time.

Planning ahead should include getting pricing in advance. Your biggest consumer protection is a federal law called The Funeral Rule -- it requires that funeral directors give you itemized prices, either in person, over the phone or in the mail.

Most estimates will start with a basic services fee, which is the base price applicable to all burials. While funeral homes often have packages of services, you’re not required to purchase a whole funeral package. You’ll need to consider costs for a casket, a headstone, a plot in a cemetery, multiple death certificates, flowers, an organist, a member of the clergy and obituary notices.

Optional services might include using the funeral home for the viewing,

The most expensive part of a funeral is the casket. A funeral director cannot refuse to use a casket you bought somewhere else. If cremation is chosen, the funeral home must make a selection of alternate caskets available.

When buying a casket, the funeral home is required to show you the price list before you see the caskets. This is helpful so you don’t automatically want the fanciest one you see in the showroom. You’ll have an idea of what they cost in advance. If some of the lessexpensive caskets on the list aren’t in the showroom, ask to see them anyway.

You need to know all your options.

If you prepay for a funeral plan, check your state laws to ensure that the money will be kept in a state regulated trust.

Make a list and compare prices before you make any final decisions. Knowing your rights and the costs in advance will help guard against emotional decisions at the last minute.

Ann Williams, whose great grandfather was the Colorado rancher who ended Kid Curry’s crime spree, is a noted author and speaker from Pueblo West. She weaves an enlightening tale of Curry’s exploits through firsthand accounts of the outlaw’s life as recounted by his “soiled dove” girlfriend.
