Traditionally, high altitude is defined as anything 8,000 feet above sea level and higher.

But if you’ve ever baked a box of brownies in Colorado Springs or the Tri-Lakes area, you may have noticed that the directions include recommendations for high altitude baking. Neither Monument, which sits at 6,961 feet, nor Colorado Springs, which sits at 6,035 feet is high enough to qualify as high altitude, right? Not necessarily. The effects of altitude can be felt in human beings beginning at 4,900 feet above sea level, which has led to a revised definition of high altitude. Here’s the new, perhaps more accurate way to describe it: high altitude is 4,900 – 11,500 feet; very high altitude is 11,500 – 18,000 feet; and extreme altitude is anything above 18,000 feet.

It’s called the death zone because the amount of oxygen at that altitude is insufficient to sustain human life. The summit of Mount Everest, for example, is in the death zone. But who would stick around long enough at the summit of Mount Everest to actually die from a lack of oxygen?

It’s true that the death zone can lead to a loss of vital functions and result in death.

But the other, perhaps more likely scenario is that a person’s cognitive functions aren’t working properly so they make poor decisions resulting in injury and/or death, or their muscles are weakened by the lack of oxygen (and usually from the ridiculously hard climb to the top of whatever mountain they’ve chosen to summit) which results in accidents, causing injury and/or death.

• Stay below 7,000 feet for a day or two – this goes for out-of-town sea-level-living visitors. When they first arrive in our fair state, they’re already going to be feeling the effects of the altitude, so don’t drag them to the top of Pikes Peak. Give them a chance to acclimate and take sight-seeing at a lower altitude.

• Limit alcohol intake – better yet, avoid it altogether. Alcohol binds to oxygen and water and essentially steals these two extremely important nutrients, which can significantly heighten the negative effects of high altitude.

• Avoid strenuous activity for a day or two – again, don’t challenge your out-oftown guests to a race up the Manitou Incline right after they’ve settled into their hotel or your guest room.

• Know your medications – the effects of some medications can be greatly increased by going to a higher altitude. It is always best to check with your doctor about your medications before rushing off on vacation to the Himalayas (or wherever).

• Eat regularly – especially if you’re hiking or doing some other active . . . activity, you need to keep fueling up your body, even if you don’t necessarily feel hungry.

Small snacks like trail mix or dried fruit are a great choice.

• Dress in layers – because you are closer to the sun at higher altitudes, you may be Up Where the Air is Rare...

tempted to wear clothing that keeps you cool, like shorts and a tank top. But don’t be deceived. When then sun goes down or if a storm rolls in, you’re going to want something else to protect you from the elements. Pack extra clothes and jackets or simply dress in layers.

• Avoid smoking – we all know we should be doing this anyway, regardless of the altitude at which we live. But let’s face it, people smoke. Smoking interferes with oxygen delivery in the body and the irritant effect of the smoke can narrow the airways, causing difficulty breathing.

SIGNS OF ALTITUDE SICKNESS Even if you follow all the rules and recommendations for how to behave at a higher altitude, there’s still the chance that you could experience altitude sickness. By knowing the symptoms, you can act more quickly to alleviate your ailments and avoid potentially life-threatening issues.

BULLYING RECOVERY

t’s been over five years since I’ve worked in a classroom with adolescents, angry adolescents at that. Add in: angry adolescents who didn’t really want to be the classroom. So I knew what I was walking into before I volunteered to co-facilitate a Bullying Recovery workshop to teens last year.

For thirteen years, while working in education, I came across some pretty challenging behaviors. Most of the time, the teens were angry at something else and would release their anger in my classroom. I remember a female student who was triggered by a male student. She screamed her rage as she picked up the end of a long table and tipped it while we all watched the items on the table slide off. She calmed down and we talked.

It didn’t deter me because I know the importance of healing from being bullied. I know how important it is to offer assistance-even if what we present goes seemingly over their head as they tune us out.

I know the mind picks up everything on some level. Bullying Recovery is about moving beyond the mental and emotional injuries that bullying created. Recovery can help prevent suicide, substance abuse, running away, and self-abusive behaviors.

They seem to have the best flavor.” Since he was not expecting this response, he smiled and chuckled. I remember him the most.

He taught me how to let things go. He was labeled with Asperger’s and at the age of seventeen, his foster parents decided they didn’t want him anymore and he moved to a different school. I was very sad. What it must feel like to be rejected again and at the age of seventeen.

As we began our presentation, many of the youth began warming up to us. They began to interact and listen-at least to part of what we were saying. Some youth got up and left to go smoke outside and came back in.

Some left with a staff member and came back in five or ten minutes. Some were texting on their phone. Some were participating and then pretty soon most were partici-

pating. And we loved it.

When the kids stopped texting, stopped leaving the room, and participated in the activities, we knew we were making headway.

In the end, we had made some progress in our workshop. We could see and hear in their responses that they had listened to at least some of the information and had learned from the hands-on activities. That is what we cared about the most. Making

an impact.

POTASSIUM POWER

S

taying strong as we age obviously requires keeping physically active, especially focusing on strengthening our muscles. And as always, staying strong also means eating well to sustain and build muscle tissue. In this case, that means getting enough potassium.

Science has long known that potassium is needed for muscle control. In recent studies done at Tufts University’s Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center, researchers found that including potassium-rich fruits and vegetables in our diets has beneficial effects on muscle. More specifically, older adults need potassium-rich fruits and vegetables that produce an alkaline rather than an acidic residue.

Many of the foods we eat -- protein foods and cereal grains, for example -- produce acidic residues in our bodies. With aging, many Americans slowly build up these small acid residues, resulting in mild acidosis. This condition seems to “trigger a muscle-wasting response,” according to the researchers. But the process, they say, might be counteracted by eating alkaline-producing plant foods high in potassium. Their research showed that subjects “whose diets were rich in potassium averaged 3.6 more pounds of lean tissue mass (or muscle) than those with only half the potassium intake. That almost offsets the 4.4 pounds of lean tissue typically lost in a decade in healthy men and women age 65 and above.”

Bananas are the most familiar potassiumrich food. Some other potassium-rich sources include sweet potatoes, tomatoes, beet greens, potatoes, white beans, prunes, soybeans, winter squash, spinach, peaches, apricots, cantaloupe, honeydew melon, lentils, plantains, kidney beans and lima beans.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture recommends that older adults get at least 4,700 milligrams of potassium daily. One medium sweet potato baked in the skin without salt has 542 mg of potassium. An

1. Using a large skillet over medium heat, add in olive oil. Saute onion for 2 to 3 minutes to soften. Add in the tomatoes and any juices. Use a potato masher or fork to break the tomatoes into large pieces. Add in the sausage, garlic, celery, salt, black pepper, paprika, cayenne pepper and brown sugar or honey. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 4 to 5 minutes.

Adding trees to shade your yard and house reduce water evaporation and cooling bills. Now that makes sense! Another way to reduce water evaporation is by using drip irrigation and setting your sprinklers to water early in the morning or late in the evening.

Garden beds covered with mulch will require less water and if you use organic mulch like bark or compost you will be improving the structure of your soil as well.

A properly landscaped yard is beautiful and works in harmony with its surroundings. And since we are a semi-arid climate it makes sense to incorporate xeriscaping principals into your yard. Plus, nothing looks more natural against our snow-capped Rocky Mountain background than a colorful low-water landscape.

he Palmer Lake Historical Society invites the public on Thursday April 16, 2015, at 7:00 PM to the Palmer Lake Town Hall, 28 Valley Crescent, Palmer Lake, CO, 80133, for a presentation on culturally modified trees found in the local area. Many trees have been discovered throughout the country that were modified many years ago by Native American Indians for various purposes.

Some trees pointed the way to water or geographical points of significance, some served as an early form of GPS by directing travelers to trail systems, while others held spiritual and ceremonial meaning. The ancestors of the Ute Indians, who have lived in the Pikes Peak area for centuries, modified trees throughout the area for spiritual and other purposes. Many of these trees exist today.
