ne of the most recognizable and iconic movie quotes was actually improvised. Thanks to the directing brilliance of Stanley Kubrick, Jack Nicholson had the flexibility to ad lib some of his lines in the movie adaptation of Stephen King’s book, “The Shining.” Most notably, the “Heeeere’s Johnny!” line he spouted out as he poked his head through the hole in the door. EARLY LIFE Stanley Kubrick was born in The Bronx on July 26, 1928. His parents, Jack and Gertrude, were fairly well-off, since Jack was a rather prominent doctor. But the Kubricks were never described as pretentious or stuffy.

Kubrick may not have been the best student (he was actually a far cry from it) but he neither was he unintelligent. He began teaching himself the different filming techniques he witnessed at the movies and, much to his father’s dismay, tended to focus on that more than his studies in school. Kubrick often skipped school to see double-features at the cinema, which definitely reflected in his grades. By the time he graduated, his grades essentially disqualified him from being able to attend college.
After filming several short documentaries, Kubrick finally came to the attention of Hollywood with “Killer’s Kiss” in 1955, and “The Killing” in 1966. He directed Kirk Douglas in “Paths of Glory,” released in 1957 and the pair reunited for “Spartacus” in 1960.
By 1946, Kubrick was hired on as a fulltime staff photographer at “Look” magazine where he made a name for himself by telling stories through his photos. He photographer everything from an antiNazi German artist named George Grosz sitting on a chair in the middle of the street to boxing matches, of which Kubrick was a major fan.

His time in high school wasn’t a complete waste, however. Kubrick was chosen as an official school photographer for a year and he later took that experience and translated it into several freelance photography opportunities. While he attended night classes at the City College of New York, Kubrick honed his photographic skills and by the time he graduated from college, he had sold a series of photographs to “Look” magazine; he was paid $25 and the series was printed on June 26, 1945. He managed to rustle up some extra money playing chess in Washington Square Park and several Manhattan chess clubs.

tography/cinematography. At 12 years old, Stanley took to the game of chess and loved it so much that it appeared in many of his films later on. At 13, Kubrick received a Graflex camera from his father, which sparked a fascination with photography. He began learning the ropes of developing his own photos in a darkroom and taking candid shots of people on the streets of New York.
It was about this time that Kubrick took a more serious approach to his studies of filmmaking, and in 1951(with the prompting of a high school friend) he made his first set of short documentaries. His first ever was called “Day of the Fight” and Kubrick employed a reverse tracking shot – a technique in which the subject

In 1961, Kubrick was hired by Marlon Brando to direct “One-Eyed Jacks,” but the pair didn’t quite get along and Brando ended up directing the film himself. Kubrick was none too thrilled with how Hollywood was treating him so he moved to England, where he would shoot the rest of his films from then on. In 1962, he filmed “Lolita,” which worked within fairly strict constraints due to the scandalous nature of the plot; in the movie, a middle-aged man becomes obsessed with a young girl. In 1964, “Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb” was released and represented yet another risky move on Kubrick’s part, given that nuclear warfare and the potential threat of a nuclear bombing incident weren’t considered comedic fodder. However, Kubrick’s innovative spin on the topic led to a successful film and he lived to direct, write, produce, and film another day. “2001: A Space Odyssey” is considered by many critics as one of the best movies ever made, featuring a series of encounters between humans and advanced machines called “monoliths” that were built by extraterrestrials and appear to have affected human evolution. The film was considered a science-fiction film way ahead of its time, containing groundbreaking special effects. “A Clockwork Orange” followed in 1971 and was highly controversial due to Director Stanley Kubrick... its portrayal of sex and violence. In 1975, Kubrick released “Barry Lyndon” which marked a turning point for him, both privately and professionally. Word had gotten out about his demand for perfection, and the cast and crew were leery of his unrelenting quest to make everything just right. Additionally, because the movie was being shot in Ireland and involved the military in the plot, Kubrick reportedly received threats from the IRA that he was a target. He moved production out of the country and an overwhelming desire for privacy and security led to Kubrick withdrawing and becoming somewhat of a recluse. “The Shining” followed in 1980, with “Full Metal Jacket” released in 1987 and his last film, “Eyes Wide Shut” in 1999.

ANGER, ANYONE?
M
ost people can agree there many angry people walking around. Some people carry suppressed anger, meaning they rarely lose their temper. Then you have mildly obvious anger. That person may lose his or her temper, but it’s not extreme. Some carry extreme anger and it’s obvious. For some this is demonstrated through road rage or other situations where the person is easily triggered. For many, the anger is somewhere in the middle. When people are abused, harassed, abandoned, manipulated, or betrayed, it usually creates a level of fear. Anger typically covers over fear. There’s
a false thought or belief that fear isn’t safe to have or to show, so it’s covered with anger. When a child grows up in an abusive or indifferent environment, fear is the result. As the child grows up, he or she may feel it’s safer to be angry than to feel fear. The anger covers over the fear and over time can begin creating detrimental affects. Over time and depending on a person’s genetics, prolonged anger begins affecting thought processing, emotional response, and brain functioning. When the brain is impacted, it begins sending ‘faulty’ signals throughout the body. The brain does not see this as ‘faulty’, but rather what it has been programmed to do over time. The brain is a perfect computer, it responds to programming that has been established.

I
t’s difficult these days to give a dinner party, or even to plan a holiday meal for the family. Uncle Dan has high cholesterol, while sister Jane is gluten intolerant. Then there is niece Ashley, who is a newly proclaimed vegan. When we consider what to eat, it’s overwhelming. It’s important to understand allergies and medically diagnosed illnesses, and how food contributes to them. But beyond that, we find ourselves wondering, “What should I eat?” “Should I buy organic?” “Should I even eat meat?” “What does ‘local and sustainable’ mean?” Shopping at a farmers’ market is part of the local and sustainable movement, but what does it mean to you? For starters, small and organic farmers use techniques that allow for the long-term fertility of their farmland. When you buy food that is grown locally, there is a shorter distance and less cost for transport, which is good for consumers, but also is thought to be good for our planet. For those of us who include meat and fish in our diets, it’s just as important to understand what to buy. Overfishing and the high energy involved in traditional ranching now are things to consider. Lately, new proteins are becoming available at the market that are good for us and for the environment. Along with many game meats, bison is becoming available at many local grocery stores. Bison is nutrient dense, has less fat and calories and more iron than chicken or salmon. And when it comes to Mother Earth, bison is good for her, too. Commercially farmed bison spend their lives on the range, with grazing patterns that have little effect on the land. This recipe for Thai-Style Bison with Crispy Cabbage Slaw will help you become a more conscious carnivore while enjoying a delicious meal!
THAI-STYLE BISON WITH CABBAGE SLAW 2 (8 ounce) bison skirt steaks, with all visible fat removed
2 tablespoon lemon grass, minced 2 Serrano Chile peppers, minced with seeds 2 shallots, minced 1 bunch green onions, sliced 1/2 tablespoon fish sauce for marinade Juice from 1 1/2 limes for marinade 1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped 1/4 cup fresh mint, chopped Juice of 1/2 lime for salad 1 teaspoon fish sauce for salad 1/2 teaspoon honey, agave syrup, or sugar 4 cups red cabbage, shredded 1 large orange, peeled and white pith removed, and slices separated into segments 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon cracked black pepper 1 teaspoon garlic, granulated

For Salad: In a large bowl, combine lime juice, fish sauce, honey, agave syrup or sugar until well-combined. Add in cabbage and orange slices, and toss well to coat in limejuice mixture. Place in refrigerator to keep cool while you are preparing skirt steaks.

For Bison Steak: 1. Preheat grill to high for 5-10 minutes, or on stovetop heat a cast-iron grill pan on high. 2. Coat steaks with olive oil and season liberally on both sides with salt, pepper and garlic. 3. Cook over a charcoal or gas grill, or in grill pan on the stovetop for 5 minutes on first side, and 3 minutes on reverse side. Let steaks rest 10 minutes, then slice thinly against the grain of the meat. 4. Drain cabbage, place on platter and top with marinated bison steak.

omplaints about boomers taking (or staying in) jobs go back for years. Critics became more vocal when the recession came along. We were supposed to retire and make room for the next generation to take the slots we’d been occupying. But we’re still hanging in there, often past the typical retirement age. There are a few reasons why many of us seniors are still working, often at part-time jobs. We don’t need a full-time paycheck because we have Social Security. But we need the extra cash because Social Security isn’t enough. (A recent survey showed that two-thirds of us are uncertain about having enough money in retirement.) But some of the jobs we’re “hog-

To be considered: We’re not job hoppers. If we’re employed, we generally stay ... unlike many in the younger generations who move from job to job, using that as a way to climb the ladder. Some trees pointed the way to water or geographical points of significance, some served as an early form of GPS by directing travelers to trail systems, while others held spiritual and ceremonial meaning. The ancestors of the Ute Indians, who have lived in the Pikes Peak area for centuries, modified trees throughout the area for spiritual and other purposes. Many of these trees exist today.
John Anderson, former El Paso County Sheriff, has conducted extensive research on trees in the area modified by ancient Ute tribes. He has collaborated with other researchers who have documented a number of “culturally modified trees” throughout the country.
