please pay attention. Anyway, it seemed fitting to dive into the topic of jelly beans this week since April 22 is National Jelly Bean Day. In order to celebrate such a wonderful day, you need some background information on jelly beans. Look no further! We’ve got everything you need right here.

Turkish delights are a sweet, chewy candy covered in powdered sugar. Jordan almonds are almonds coated in a crunchy sugar shell. Take away the almond and the powdered sugar, smash them together and BLAM! You get a jelly bean. Not literally of course, but you see where we’re going with this.

WHO CAME UP WITH THE IDEA OF THE JELLY BEAN?

WHAT’S IN IT AND HOW’S IT MADE?

Of all the popular candies in the world, the jelly bean is one whose origins remain a mystery. You’d think someone would want credit for inventing such a marvelous treat, but nope. The one thing people seem to agree on is that an American candy maker developed them in the 1800s.

Contrary to the name, there isn’t actual jelly inside of a jelly bean. The contents is mainly sugar, corn syrup and starch, with added flavors and colors.

Some flavoring is achieved through artificial methods and others are natural flavorings like fruit juice.

In order to get the bean shape, confectioners (the people who make the jelly beans) mix everything together and bring it to a boil so it can be poured into a bean-shaped mold. The inside of the mold is covered in starch to keep the mixture from sticking. After a few hours of cooling, the bean-shaped gummy is brushed with sugar and are then set aside for up to 48 hours before they move on to the next phase: the thin candy shell!

The process for applying the candy shell of a jelly bean is actually the same process used to make M&Ms, called panning. Basically, a giant metal rotating pan jostles the jelly bean gummies around for about two hours, during which time the gummy collects several layers of the sugary coating. Additionally, an edible type of beeswax may be applied to the outside of the jelly bean to keep them from sticking to each other or dissolving in humid conditions.

JELLY BEANS COME TO THE WHITE HOUSE When Ronald Reagan ran for the position as Governor of California, he inadvertently changed the face of the candy world forever by announcing his fondness for jelly beans. He started eating “Goelitz Mini Jelly Beans” to help wean himself off his pipe-smoking habit. The Oakland-based company, Herman Goelitz Candy Company, sent monthly jelly bean shipments to Governor Reagan’s office during his two terms in Sacramento. Additionally, the company designed a special custom jelly bean jar just for their most famous fan.

In 1976, the candy company had introduced a new brand of jelly beans called Jelly Belly. From then on, Jelly Belly jelly beans were included in every one of Reagan’s shipments and eventually comprised the entire order.

At his presidential inauguration in 1981, Jelly Belly provided three and one half tons of red (Very Cherry), white (Coconut) and blue (Blueberry) Jelly Belly jelly beans to be distributed.

The Blueberry flavor was developed in 1980, specifically for Reagan and has since become one of the company’s most popular flavors.

The Herman Goelitz Candy Company provided Reagan with Jelly Belly jelly beans for all eight years of his presidency. The candy was served in the Oval Office and on Air Force One. In fact, a special holder was designed for the plan so that the jelly bean jar wouldn’t tip over and spill during turbulence.

Even more interesting than that is the fact that Reagan actually had jelly beans sent into space with the crew of the space shuttle Challenger in 1983. He must have thought they were really out of this world . . . get it?

JELLY BEANS MEET THE BEATLES American fans apparently made a mistake when they heard that The Beatles like jelly babies. Since that wasn’t a candy they were familiar with, they thought the band meant jelly beans and thus, they began throwing the candy at the group during their performances.

The program includes members of the community from the armed forces, police and fire depts., boy and Girl Scouts, and school bands.

1. Preheat oven to 375 F. Grease

2. On waxed paper, combine flour, baking soda and salt.

3. In large bowl, with mixer at medium speed, beat butter and sugars until creamy, occasionally scraping bowl with rubber spatula. Beat in vanilla, then eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. At low speed, gradually add flour mixture; beat just until blended, occasionally scraping bowl. With spoon, stir in chocolate and walnuts.

4. Drop cookies by heaping measuring tablespoons, 2 inches apart, onto prepared cookie sheet. Bake cookies 10 to 11 minutes or until lightly browned. Transfer cookies to wire rack to cool. Repeat with remaining dough. Makes about 3 dozen cookies. • Each cookie: About 170 calorie, 10g total fat (5g saturated), 3g protein, 19g carbohydrate, 1g fiber, 26mg cholesterol, 130mg sodium.

I

f there is a poster vegetable for spring, one that embodies the fresh flavors we are so ready for after a season of roots and leafy greens, it would be the garden pea. This crop loves the still-cool temperatures of the first weeks of the new season, and its plants produce prolific white or lavender blooms that are lovely to look at ... if you are lucky enough to grow them. Those flowers give way to showy, bright-green bulging pods.

There are three main types of garden peas. First there is the classic green pea that produces a pod full of plump, round, green peas. This is the part of the plant we eat, discarding the pods, which tend to be tough. These peas are sometimes called English peas. Fresh peas from the field or garden are sweet, creamy and bursting with the fresh taste of the season. For those of us who don’t have the opportunity to purchase fresh peas, they can be found in the frozen section of your grocery.

The snow pea and the sugar snap pea, which is a cross between the snow pea and the garden pea, are varieties that have the same fresh deliciousness of garden peas.

But it’s the pods, with their texture and crunch, that are so tasty.

When buying fresh green peas, look for firm, brightly colored pods. Small pods tend to be the most tender and usually will have a fresher taste. Plan to prepare your garden peas right away, as the sugars in all varieties begin turning to starch after harvesting.

Although they come from the same family, the nutritional values of peas vary.

Green garden peas contain high amounts of vitamin A, as well as good amounts of antioxidants. However, because the pod of the snow pea and sugar snap pea are eat-

Eggplant - Eggplant need hot days and warm nights in order to produce and will not tolerate a freeze. Again, start from seed mid- March and wait to transplant until there is no chance of frost.

Melons - Start seeds indoors by the middle of April and transplant after there is no chance of frost; around Mother’s Day. Be very careful transplanting as their roots are very fragile.

Onions – if you plan on growing onions from seed than you better plan for next year, but fret not because there is still time to you use onion sets or onion transplants!

Peppers – Peppers need to be seeded indoors no later than the middle of March in order to have a transplant that is worth transplanting. They will not tolerate a frost and purchasing transplants is recommended.

Squash- Both summer squash and winter squash will produce a better crop if planted by transplant. Start seed indoors in early April and plant outside by the end of May. Squash roots are also fragile so plant carefully.

Tomatoes- Select tomato varieties with the shortest days to maturity and start seed indoors around the middle of March. Be especially diligent about hardening off your tomatoes before planting outside and wait until there is no chance of frost.

In 872, while serving as Cardinal Bishop of Portus, he was a candidate for the papacy, but due to some political issues, he left Rome later that year. Pope John VIII ordered Formosus’ excommunication for, among other

things, deserting his diocese without papal permission, despoiling the cloisters in Rome and conspiring with “certain iniquitous men and women for the destruction of the papal see.” The excommunication was lifted in 878, but Formosus had to agree never to return to Rome or exercise his priestly functions. This would seem to be a career-killer, but in 883, Pope Marinus I restored the disgraced cardinal to his diocese.

Finally, in 891, Formosus’ rehabilitation was complete, when he was unanimously elected to succeed Pope Stephen V. • Neil Armstrong may have been the first human to walk on the moon, but Buzz Aldrin was the first to urinate there (using the system built into his space suit, of course).

ot long ago, a high-school kid would ask his favorite girl to the prom. She’d say yes, then the expensive parts would start ... limo, dinner, flowers, tickets, tux or dress, pictures, after-party.

Now the simple act of inviting has risen to the level of a marriage proposal, complete with all the hoopla and expense. Visa’s annual survey says that just asking someone to the prom will average $324 this year, approximately one-third of the $919 total cost.

A Google search for “promposals” reveals 447,000 results. On Twitter, @ThePromposal has over 24,000 followers, many of whom have attached a photo or video showing how they did it. Sometimes the request is written inside the lid of a pizza box.

Others are as simple as a cake with “Prom?” in the icing. More expensive

In the Northeast, promposal will average $431, with prom costing $738, for a total of $1,169.

Out West, they’re looking at $342 and $596, for a total of $937.

Most disturbing, however, is the incomes of families handing over these amounts. In a family with an income under $50,000, cost of prom and promposal will average $1,109.

Under $25,000, and the family will spend an extreme $1,393. But those making over $50,000 will spend only $799.

With parents expecting to pay 73 percent of the costs, teens don’t have much incentive to cut expenses. The free Plan’it Prom app helps students and parents make and stick to a budget for the prom (or any other event) by tracking spending as they shop. Look for it on iTunes, Google Play store or www.practicalmoneyskills.com/ prom. The app has timeline, budget and cost-cutting tips. It’s worth considering.
