ow often do you get stuck trying to think of a certain word? It’s on the tip of your tongue but you can’t remember what it is and every other word you try in its place just isn’t right. If only there was some sort of book that was like a reverse dictionary. It would list different meanings and then list a bunch of different words that go along with that meaning. Then you could just pull that sucker out and flip through it when you get stuck so you don’t stand there, mid-conversation, with your mouth hanging open. Oh, wait. There IS a book like that. And you’ll never believe who came up with it. Well, perhaps you will, since his name is part of the title of the very first edition. That’s right, it was Peter Mark Roget. FROM YOUNG MAN TO YOUNG DOCTOR The incredibly smart young Roget graduated from the university in 1798, with an MD at 19 years old. He later spent time studying at the London Medical Schools.

In 1802, Roget traveled to Paris and his father’s home town of Geneva. At the time, Europe was experiencing the only time of peace that occurred during 1793 and 1815, known as the Peace of Amiens. The ceasefire only lasted a year and when hostilities resumed, Roget found himself in imprisoned for two months. He was allowed to return to England in 1803.

EARLY LIFE Even though he had a profound effect on the English language in that he compiled the first ever thesaurus, not much is known about Roget’s early life. At least, not much was documented. What is known is that Roget was born on January 18, 1779 in London. His father, Reverand John Roget was a Swiss pastor at a French Protestant Church.

Unfortunately, Roget’s father passed away while the boy was still young and his mother moved the family to Edinburgh, Scotland. The tragedy affected the young boy and he spent much of his life battling depression. However, the move to Edinburgh

Back at home, Roget found himself drawn to studying the disease, tuberculosis. In fact, he published several works on the illness, as well as other works focusing on the effects of nitrous oxide (or laughing gas) that was used as an anesthetic at the time.

Later in life, he would go on to write an article on Thomas Beddoes of Bristol, who was a well-known investigator of gases for possible medical uses.

In 1804, Roget was offered, and accepted, the position of chief surgeon at the Manchester Infirmary. He held the post until 1808, when he left to teach in the London Medical Street. There, he became a Licentiate of the College of Physicians and became physician to the Northern Dispensary in 1810. A year later, he became one of the secretaries of the Medical and Chirugical Society of London, eventually being elected to president in 1829.

AN INVENTOR EMERGES Most people think that Roget’s main contribution to society was his thesaurus but the truth is, he invented several important items, such as a variation on the slide rule he devised in 1814. His device was an early type of calculator in that it helped a person determine the roots and powers of numbers long before the TI-83 graphing calculator was invented.

While not technically an invention, Roget is thought to have been the first person to note the phenomenon called “persistence of vision.” Basically, he noticed that when still photographs are viewed in rapid succession, it gives the illusion of movement.

Sound familiar? It should. The idea is what led to the development of cinematography.

His discovery was published in 1820, in a paper Roget submitted to the Royal Society, a good 70 years before the first “movie” was invented. It was titled, “Explanation of an optical deception in the appearance of the spokes of a wheel when seen through vertical apertures.”

Roget was also a key player in founding the medical school at Manchester. He worked in both Manchester and Bristol as a private tutor, traveling around Europe with his students. Roget also spent time as a professor of physiology at the Royal Institution in London. While there, he continued his work on medical topics, holding lectures on various issues. He was made a fellow of the Royal Society and later served as its secretary, from 1827 to 1848.

Additionally, Roget invented a device that showed that there was an attractive force between parallel wires carrying electrical current in the same direction. He published his findings in 1835 and his apparatus is sometimes referred to as Roget’s spiral.

As we mentioned before, Roget is most well-known for his work on the first-ever thesaurus. He actually began making a list of words that have either similar or the same meaning when he was quite young; some estimates indicate Roget was as young as eight years old. He added to the list for the majority of his life but didn’t actually sit down to try to compile everything until after he had retired from medicine in 1840.

In 1852, Roget finally published the first version of his thesaurus, titled “Thesaurus of English Words and Phrases Classified and Arranged so as to Facilitate the Expression of Ideas and Assist in Literary Composition.” The title alone illustrates how gifted Roget was with his use of the English language. The book went through 28 editions and reprints during Roget’s lifetime.

Even though Roget died on September 12, 1869, at the age of 90, his thesaurus has never been out of print, even to the present day. Of course, the title had to be shortened and eventually it became known as “Roget’s Thesaurus of English Words and Phrases.”

In the 19th century, about 50 million bison were killed by the Government or settlers either for their meat, fur, or as a sport. Thousands of herds were also wiped out to deprive the American Indians from obtaining food and shelter.

As a long-time student of history, he will present his theories on why it happened and discuss the influence of politics and the expansion of the West.

He will also discuss how the deliberate extermination of the bison related to the American Indian Wars.

1. In 2-quart saucepan, heat broth and 3 1/2 cups water to boiling over high heat. Reduce heat to low to maintain simmer; cover.

2. In 4-quart saucepan, heat 1 tablespoon olive oil over medium heat.

Add carrots and cook 10 minutes. Add asparagus, sugar snap peas, pepper and 1/4 teaspoon salt, and cook, covered, until vegetables are tender-crisp, about 5 minutes. Remove vegetables to bowl.

3. In same saucepan, in 1 tablespoon olive oil, cook onion over medium heat until tender, about 7 minutes. Add rice and 3/4 teaspoon salt and cook, stirring frequently, until rice grains are opaque.

Add wine; cook until absorbed. Add about 1/2 cup simmering broth to rice, stirring until liquid is absorbed.

4. Continue cooking, adding remaining broth, 1/2 cup at a time, and stirring after each addition until all liquid is absorbed and rice is tender but still firm, about 25 minutes (risotto should have a creamy consistency). Stir in vegetables, Parmesan and basil; heat through.

emorial Day was created to remember those who died while serving our country.

The federal holiday originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers.

Today, the holiday commemorates all of those who served in the American military who sacrificed their lives for our country. It is observed every year on the last Monday of May. Originally, Memorial Day was known as Decoration Day because the graves of soldiers were cleaned and beautified with flowers and flags.

Moina Michael is credited with the idea to wear red poppies on Memorial Day in honor of those who died. In 1915, she was the first to wear one, and sold poppies to raise money for charities serving soldiers in need.

In 1922, the VFW began to sell poppies and expanded the program to selling artificial poppies made by disabled veterans. In 2000, Congress established the “National Moment of Remembrance,” which asks that at 3 p.m. local time, all Americans “To voluntarily and informally observe in their own way a Moment of Remembrance and respect, pausing from whatever they are doing for a moment of silence or listening to ‘Taps.’”

Memorial Day also is considered to be the unofficial start of summer. Family gatherings featuring barbequed or grilled meats and vegetables are a traditional part of the celebration. Try my recipe for Cheeseburger Sliders with Sriracha Mayo Sauce for a spicy spin on a holiday favorite.

Seniors need to be cautious, however, in dealing with summer.

If you don’t have fans or air conditioning, start looking now for places that donate fans to seniors. Try the local senior center, fire department or town offices. They’re likely to know when and where fans will be given out. If you live in a humid area, consider whether buying a one-room window air conditioner will help. Besides cooling the air, they remove moisture, which makes it feel cooler.

Seniors often don’t sense their level of thirst, either from aging or medications. Know the signs of dehydration: dry mouth, headache, limb cramps, dark urine or only a small amount of urine, or being unable to sleep. Becoming dehydrated can have serious effects on the body’s organs, so be sure to drink enough water. Caffeinated or sugared drinks like coffee and soft drinks will only make things worse.

Men experienced “multiple incidents in the past year,” were assaulted by multiple offenders during a single incident and were assaulted at work during duty hours. Men preferred to describe the events as hazing or abuse or humiliation, and were less likely to report the incidents.

RAND estimated that 116,000 service members were assaulted in the past year, 22 percent of women and 7 percent of men.

Of women who reported an assault, 52 percent believe there was retaliation afterward. That, however, isn’t the reason most didn’t report the incident. Instead they wanted to forget it and move on.

While the number of assaults has decreased, the rate of retaliation has not.

TURN HOUSEHOLD ITEMS INTO JUGGLING BALLS

unning a household requires the skills of a juggler. First come the kids and their schedules, then toss in cooking, cleaning, car repair and pets. As most parents will attest, just when you think you’ve got it, the unexpected comes along to throw everything off balance! Start and stop ... the juggling act never ends.

Now, my son calls himself a juggler too, but for him it’s juggling oranges out of the fruit bowl, potatoes from the pantry or just about anything that crosses his path.

Then, with some creative thinking, we came up with some alternatives, like a set of juggling balls.

Much to his delight, he made these handy, sturdy balls in minutes using basic supplies we had in the kitchen.

f your tax e-file was rejected or you were expecting a tax refund long before now, there’s a chance that you’ve been the victim of identity theft. In fact, your only warning might be a notice from the IRS saying you’ve already filed and received your tax refund.

The letter might say that more than one return was filed with your Social Security number, or that you owe additional tax, or that they received W-2 or 1099 forms for an employer you don’t know, or that your Notice of Earnings from Social Security has more income than you actually earned.

The bottom line is that it means your Social Security number has been compromised.

Here are the steps you need to take: • Call the IRS. Use the number on the letter it send you.

• If you received a W-2 or 1099 from an employer you don’t know, call Social Security. Go over your actual earnings to be sure they match what you know to be correct.

• Call the police and file a report.

• Notify the big three credit reporting agencies and have a fraud alert put on your file: www.Equifax.com (1-800-525-6285), www.Experian.

com (1-888-397-3742), www.TransUnion.com (1-800-680-7289).

• Complete IRS form 14039, which is the Identity Theft Affidavit. You can download that at IRS.gov.

• File a complaint with the FTC at IdentityTheft.gov.

If you get suspicious emails that you think are phishing scams about your taxes, let the IRS know. Send email to phishing@irs.gov; or call 1-800366-4484.

For future years, the advice is to file as early in the season as possible. If someone else does attempt to use your Social Security number, your own return will already be there. Beware to whom you give your Social Security number, especially on employment applications. Provide the number only if hired.

Learn to do your own taxes using a computer software program, then print them out and send by certified mail. Keep control of your personal information. “SOAP BOX DERBY SPEEDS INTO COLORADO SPRINGS !”

The Greatest Amateur Youth Racing Event in the World Teaches Boys and Girls Teamwork, the Spirit of Competition and Family Values.

T

he premier youth and family oriented racing program in the country comes to Colorado Springs as the Soap Box Derby races into town on May 31 and June 7. About 50 youths are expected to compete in their gravity-powered racers for a chance to represent Colorado Springs at the 77th All-American Soap Box Derby Championship in Akron, Ohio on July 25. The three local champions receive an expense paid trip to Akron to compete at the national race.

The goals of the All-American Soap Box Derby remain the same as they were in 1934. By teaching young people to become solid community citizens through teamwork, the spirit of competition, perseverance and family values. The All-American Soap Box Derby is highly respected throughout the country by community leaders, educators and racing enthusiasts of all levels.

The Springs race is one of 600 races held across the U.S. and overseas where participants compete in one of three divisions: Stock, Super Stock and Masters. Stock is for kids 7 to 14, Super Stock for kids 10 to 17 and Masters 10 to 19. Practice runs occur 9am to 1 pm on May 31 at the race site, Costilla and El Paso. Final inspection is June 6 with race day June 7, 8:00am to 3pm.

The local Colorado Springs race is coordinated by area Sertoma and Kiwanis clubs that provide much of the funding and most of the manpower necessary to run the event. Major supporters are McDonalds, the Scheiner Commercial Group, USAA, Murphy Constructors, Ent FCU and Overhead Door. Many other companies lend their assistance by sponsoring individual race drivers which allows them to advertise on the cars, just like NASCAR. Everybody is invited to witness this historic race and be thrilled by the close competition of our local racers in the world’s greatest gravity powered race event, Sunday, June 7.
