ads are a given in life, like death and taxes.

Someone comes up with a seemingly brilliant idea and the world goes nuts for about five minutes. Then the excitement dies down once people realize that brilliant idea wasn’t as life-changing as it had appeared at first. The brilliant idea fades into the background. Occasionally, the idea has some staying power and will reappear in a decade or so. The bottom line in all of this is that people have come up with some pretty interesting things over the last century or so. Snippetz thought it might be fun to take a trip back over the years to see what some of those fad inventions were.

In 1948, to try to boost sales, new Pez dispensers were developed, taking the place of the old tins. Four years later, the dispensers got cartoon heads and over the years, have become collectables, with more than 300 different dispenser versions.

• Silly Putty – When chemists at General Electric stumbled upon a new rubbery substance that could be stretched, bounced and kneaded, they didn’t quite know what to do with it.

But Peter Hodgson did. In 1949, he took $150 and put it into a new business, selling 1-ounce bags of putty in plastic eggs. It was a hit and to date, millions of Silly Putty eggs have been (and continue to be) sold.

• Slinky – As with many other brilliant inventions, the Slinky was invented in 1945, purely by accident.

Marine engineer, Richard James, witnessed a torsion spring from his desk pop loose and tumble end over end, across the floor. Amused by the event, he took the spring home to his wife, Betty, who suggested the named Slinky. Since then, more than a quarter billion Slinkys have been sold across the globe.

• Ant farms – Technically speaking, ant farms are called formicarium and the versions that were manufactured for the general public to enjoy were created by Milton Levine. However, his design is said to be based on Frank Austin’s 1931 patented design.

The whole kit sold by the Uncle Milton Company included a plastic viewing box, a bag of sand and a vial of live ants. Eventually, the “farm” landscape was added and that design is still sold today.

• Frisbee – The Frisbee discs we’ve all come to know and love actually started out as pie tins. The Frisbie Baking Company of Bridgeport, Con-

necticut, made pies that many college students in the area bought and enjoyed, and eventually discovered that throwing the tins around was actually pretty fun. Using that same general shape, Walter Frederick Morrison, a Los Angeles building inspector, partnered with Warren Franscioni to create a plastic version in 1948. However, Morrison split with Franscioni and went on to create a new version called the Pluto Platter. This became the design for all Frisbees. Morrison signed over the rights to the Pluto Platter to “Wham-O,” a toy company owned by Rich Knerr and A.K. “Spud” Melin, who began production of the Pluto Platters in 1957. Morrison wasn’t left high and dry, even though he no longer had any claim to the Pluto Platter; the Frisbie Baking Company shut down in 1958 and he was awarded a patent for his disc. He received over a million dollars in royalties for his invention.

• Troll Dolls – Inspired by the legend of trolls who inhabited the forests and brought luck to humans, inventor Thomas Dam created the troll dolls because he couldn’t afford to buy his daughter a birthday present. Initially called Dammit Dolls, they were first mass-produced in 1964, with more than one million dolls sold in the United States that year.

• Sea monkeys – While not technically an invention, Sea Monkeys were most definitely a fad that began in 1957. Harold von Braunhut came up with a brine-shrimp-based product that he termed “Instant Life,” which was basically brine shrimp eggs and salt in a packet. When dumped into a tank of water, the eggs hatched after about 24 hours. Von Braunhut changed the name to “Sea Monkeys” in 1962,

• View-Master – These nifty little gadgets were first introduced at the New York World’s Fair in 1939 as an updated, modernized version of a postcard. The device itself allowed users to view 14 different slides organized onto a small reel. The View-Master actually became so well-known that, during World War II, the U.S. military purchased 100,000 viewers and more than 6 million reels in order to train the troops.

• Hula Hoop – The origins of the Hula Hoop date back about 3,000 years ago in ancient Egypt when children would make hoops out of grapevines and spin them around on their waists. We can’t be sure if it was a fad back then or not, but it definitely became one in 1958, when Wham-O came out with a plastic version that went on to sell 20 million units in the first six months.

• Yo-Yo – Again, this might have been a fad when it first came on the scene in Greece around 500 B.C., but without testimony to verify that, we have to stick with what we know. In 1928, Pedro Flores brought the modern-day version of the yo-yo to the U.S. from the Philippines. He sold the rights to Donald Duncan who began production of the toy and sales eventually peaked in 1962, when more than 45 million units were sold.

I had the distinct privilege of working personally with Paul Harvey on two occasions. The first time I met him in person was when my partner and I greeted him at the airport as he deplaned the executive jet that brought him there. We were surprised that the man with such a big voice was just average in size.

That night at a pre-event cocktail party I watched Paul Harvey work the room filled with local political and business men and women who had paid handsomely to attend. Later he spoke to thousands crowded into a theater, and kept them on the edge of their seats for 45 minutes with his staccato voice, dry humor, and poi-

Second, Paul Harvey displayed power without pride. He conveyed this power not by telling everyone how many listeners his radio show had or how many books he had sold or how many important people he knew. He conveyed his power with the comfortableness of his body and the friendly tone of his voice. His chin was up, his shoulders straight, his handshake was firm, and his eyes sparkled with sincere interest in everyone he spoke to.

CORN: SUMMER’S SWEET GIFT

esterday, my sister gave me half of the bag of fresh, sweet corn she’d purchased at the market. Corn is best eaten as soon as possible after harvesting, as its sugar converts to starch. To show my thanks, I husked all of the corn. I decided I’d use my share in a variety of different ways: roasted on the cob, as creamed corn and shelled in recipes like my Zesty Chicken With Fresh Corn, Baby Spinach and Fettucine.

Corn was grown by Native Americans long before the arrival of Christopher Columbus.

Over thousands of years, Native Americans used special cultivation methods to transform maize into the domesticated plant and the wide varieties of corn that we eat today.

Sweet corn is sold by color, not variety.

Our colors are white, yellow and bi-color (white and yellow mixed). Sweet corn has been bred to have higher levels of natural sugars, one of the reasons it is so popular.

Sweet corn is one of the few vegetables that is a good source of the kind of slowly digested carbohydrate that gives you longlasting energy. It also is an excellent source of dietary fiber, and it contains vitamin C, along with niacin and folate (two of the B group vitamins). It’s also a good source of potassium, and can help balance the body’s fluids if you eat salty foods.

Here are a few tips for selecting an ear of corn: • Cobs should be fully filled, i.e. covered in corn kernels • Kernels should be bright, plump and show no signs of wrinkling • The leaves of the husk should be intact, fresh, green and not spotted or damaged • Cobs should be free of disease and insects • Sweet corn should be free of any foul odors.

Store corn in the husk in the vegetable crisper or in a plastic bag in the refrigerator. Corn is best eaten within one day of

1. Cook pasta according to package directions. Drain.

2. Meanwhile, heat 2 tablespoons of the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Season chicken on both sides with cumin, paprika, sage, 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon pepper.

3. Cook chicken until golden brown and cooked through, 6 to 7 minutes per side.

Transfer chicken to plate, cover loosely to keep warm and set aside.

4. Meanwhile, add remaining tablespoon of oil to pan. Add green onions, garlic, red pepper flakes and 1/2 teaspoon each of salt and pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, until garlic is tender, 1 to 3 minutes. Add flour and stir for 1 minute. Add chicken broth and turn heat to high; stir until wellcombined and liquid thickens slightly.

5. Turn heat down to low, and add the corn.

Simmer until corn is tender, 2 to 3 minutes.

Stir in half and half.

6. Add pasta and 1/4 cup of the Parmesan cheese, the nutmeg and remaining 1/2 teaspoon each salt and pepper, and toss to combine. Fold in spinach. Top each serving with a chicken breast. Sprinkle with remaining Parmesan cheese. Serve with lemon wedges. Serves 4.

Every climate has their issues when it comes to growing, but that doesn’t mean the tomato is always greener on the other side. They all start green and if you need to harvest the green tomatoes to save them from a frost you can still ripen them indoors!

I exercise several times a week and am in seemingly good health. About a year ago I noticed that my eyebrows were disappearing, starting on the outer edges. They are now almost completely gone.

During my annual physical in November, my general physician found that I have thyroid nodules. Three large ones were biopsied and proved negative. Blood work, including a TSH level, is normal. Both my GP and dermatologist feel certain that the nodules are not causing the eyebrow problem, because I don’t have any other symptoms of thyroid disease, but they don’t know what is causing the loss. -- K.F. ANSWER: The loss of eyebrows, superciliary madarosis, has many possible causes, but low thyroid is the first that most doctors think of. A TSH level is a reasonable screening test for thyroid disease, but if the suspicion is high, I check additional thyroid tests, such a thyroxine (T4), free T4 and T3. Occasionally TSH still can be in the very broad “normal” range for most people but be abnormal for that person.

Other causes of eyebrow loss include autoimmune disease, inflammatory skin conditions and infection. Repeated plucking of the eyebrows can lead to permanent loss of the follicles.

Allergies to cosmetics also can cause eyebrow and eyelash loss. Have you changed your makeup recently?

I have found that I regularly react in this way to vitamins and supplements. Is this common? -- D.F. ANSWER: Having a strong immune system is always a good idea. However, supplements, even those that say they are good for the immune system, have no proof that they prevent colds or shorten their duration. A healthy diet, exercise and good sleep are much better for your immune system than a supplement.

Some readers insist that these products are effective for them, but the science so far has not proven it. Also, any drug, herb, vitamin or other supplement always has the potential for side effects. I would advise you to save your money. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I often wonder if the white mold one sees on supermarket blueberries is at all dangerous to one’s heath. I’ve eaten a few with such mold, but with no apparent effect. -- A.W. ANSWER: I contacted an expert at Michigan State University, who told me that the white mold is likely a type of trichoderma. Trichoderma are not usually dangerous to humans, although some people can have an allergic reaction to it.

Still, moldy blueberries are likely to be old, not have as many nutrients and not taste so good. Eat berries right away, before they can get moldy, and if you notice that they are moldy as soon as you get them home from the store, take them back. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible.

• Clinomania is an affliction that affects a large percentage of the American population. If you suffer from an overwhelming desire to stay in bed, you’re one of us.

• If you’re like most parents, at one time or another you’ve been shocked by how quickly your kids outgrow things -- especially shoes. What may be an annoyance in a developed country is a major problem in undeveloped areas of the world; Kenton Lee is working on changing that. As a volunteer in an orphanage in Kenya, he noticed that many children had the toes cut out of their shoes just so they could fit in their feet. After returning home, Lee developed an adjustable sandal that can grow with a child, increasing up to five sizes via

a system of snaps. Although the shoe is only made available to nonprofits for those in need, domestic demand is increasing. If you’re a parent sick of buying seemingly endless pairs of new shoes, you’ll be glad to hear that Lee and his team are working on a commercial version.

• You might be surprised to learn that actor David Duchovny, best known for his role in “The X-Files,” was just a dissertation away from being awarded a doctorate in English literature.

• In 16th- and 17th-century Europe, it was considered fashionable to attend public dissections of human bodies. So-called anatomy days often included music, speeches and processions.
