NO OFFENSE . . . OK, we realize that some of the tips and techniques we talk about in this article seem sort of, well, like just plain old common sense. Please don’t be offended by that! The reality is that, sometimes the simplest, most logical thing to do is that last thing on your mind when you’re in a scary, uncomfortable situation like being lost. That said, giving some seemingly obvious tips might inspire someone to take that extra precautionary step, which could end up saving their life. So, bear with us.
• Know the basic geography of the area you’re heading to and bring along a map to decrease your chances of getting lost. • Get familiar with the edible plants around there. Those plants could be your only source of sustenance. Likewise, avoiding inedible plants could save you from serious medical issues and even death. • Bring the appropriate tools and supplies for your selected location. Don’t bring snowshoes to the desert, for example. Some basic tools for any situation include your cell phone (in a Ziploc bag to keep it dry), a knife (one with a fixed handle, not a foldable one), a fire steel, some matches, some cordage (like paracord), water purifying tablets, a tin cup and a first aid kit.
BEFORE YOU GO Here are a few simple tips to consider before you head out to explore what Mother Nature has to offer: • Always make sure that someone you

• If you’re heading someplace warm or hot, plan to hike earlier in the day. On average, 675 people die every year in the United States from heat-related complications. • The most important part of the body to keep cool is your head. You can fashion a headdress out of a light-colored cloth or shirt to keep the sun off your skin if you don’t have a hat handy. • If you get overheated, do NOT take off any of your clothing. That increases your chances of dehydration and sunburn. Instead, seek out shade to cool down.
OUT AND ABOUT IN THE COLD • Dress in layers and carry extra synthetic or wool clothing. Cotton traps moisture which can sap your body heat in a cold environment. • Avoid getting wet if possible. Most fatal hypothermia cases occur with it Survival Techniques... Continued on Page 3

isn’t super cold, from about 30 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit. About 1,000 people die from hypothermia every year in the U.S. • When hiking in a snow-laden area, use a ski pole to test the snow to see if it’s compacted or in layers. If it’s consistent when you push the pole into the snow, it’s probably fine; if it suddenly drops off, that indicates that the snow is layered and is potentially dangerous. • Keep your extremities as warm as possible and be alert for signs of frostbite. You can tell if frostbite is setting in if your skin goes a waxy, red color, then turns black.
YOU’RE LOST . . . NOW WHAT? No one ever wants to think that they’ll end up lost when they’re out hiking, but it happens. The best thing to do is to be prepared for how to behave. First and foremost, don’t panic. Allowing panic to overtake you severely interferes with how you think, resulting in careless (and sometimes fatal) mistakes. Instead, follow the acronym STOP. S = sit down; T = think; O = observe your surroundings; P = prepare for survival by gathering materials. It may be tempting to just start walking

in one direction, assuming that eventually you’ll come across someone or something that can help you. Don’t. If you MUST move, head either up or down. If you head to higher ground, you might have a better vantage point from which to determine your location. If you head lower down, you increase your chances of running into a water source, since water runs downhill. Don’t head into a canyon if you can help it. Canyons may have water but the walls might become so steep that you can’t climb back out and the risk of flash floods is much higher there.

Let’s say you’ve resigned yourself to having to make a shelter and stay the night. You see a leaning tree and think that knocking it down might provide some much-needed firewood. Yes, you need firewood, but not from that leaning tree. Why? When a tree is leaning, it is top-heavy and energy is transferred lower into the trunk. When cut or broken, the fibers can split vertically and snap backwards in a quick and violent manner, meaning you could be severely injured. Instead, find branches that are easier to snap off or have already fallen.
start a fire in the light of day than in a panic at sunset. A small fire is easier to keep burning than a big fire and much easier to control as well. Only start a fire if it’s safe to do so; we don’t need another Waldo Canyon/Black Forest incident! Find a good source of water so you don’t have to deal with dehydration on top of being lost. Look for green vegetation or an area where birds seem to flock to; they like to stick around a fresh water source. A spring is your best source but they’re not always easy to find. A running stream is also a good option but may need purification to be potable. If you must purify your water and don’t have tablets to do so, boiling water for at least three minutes should do the trick.
You’ve collected yourself a nice little pile of firewood and hope it will last you through the night. Well, it probably won’t. Take that first pile and collect three more just that size and you might have enough. Start your fire before you think you need to even if it’s still relatively warm out. It’s much easier to

Build a shelter to shield yourself from the elements. You can build an A-frame by stacking branches along both sides of a fallen tree. Cover it with brush, leaves or other plants to help insulate it. You can also stuff leaves inside your clothing to provide additional insulation if necessary. Laying on a bed of leaves, pine needles, or whatever is around can keep the cold from creeping into you from the ground. NOTE: This is not meant to be a comprehensive survival guide so do your research before heading out to stay safe! ADDITIONAL NOTE to B.B.: You can leave the blender at home. Need More Website Traffic?
9 Secrets of Social Sharing Part 1 of 3
Series 4 Article 46
Get to know the habits and personalities of your typical customer by using social analytics to determine the best days and times to post. You can find a free social analyzer at: http://simplymeasured.com /free-social-media-tools
So you've got a mobile-friendly responsive website, you've got great content, your SEO keywords are in place, and you still are not getting the amount of traffic to your website that you want? Your next step is Social Sharing.
For those of you who are ready for the Social Media Age, here are 10 important secrets that will improve your efforts tremendously!
Having a strong social marketing strategy is a must for today's social media driven culture. Websites that integrate social media on their website just plain receive more traffic. It's free advertising! It would be ridiculous to not use it.
1. When to Share and How Often?
2. Use the Limited Space of Social Postings Effectively
Tweets have a short "shelf life", meaning that they move down the page and get lost below newer tweets fairly quickly. So Tweeting more often is advisable.
Engagement, content, and a call to action - all in as little space as possible. That's the game with social sharing. Twitter made brevity the hallmark of its platform, but
I've had clients tell me "I hate Facebook", "Twitter is for kids" and "I just don't want to learn anything new". All legitimate feelings, but the fact remains that social media is the driving force of the majority of website traffic and it will only become more and more important in the years to come. So the question is, do you jump on the band wagon now or wait until you are really "behind the times" and try to catch up then? Luckily for these folks, or the business owners who just don't have the time to run their own social media, there are now people who can do that for you.
When you ind that your children’s immune system is disrupted and you want to rebuild it, consider a few things. Look at diet and what needs to be altered, added, and eliminated. Consider immune boosters you can ind at health food stores and vitamins that assist the immune system, such as vitamin D3 and C. Evaluate the home environment. Is it toxic or peaceful? What changes can be made, if necessary, to bring a sense of peace to home for everyone? Life is short. We can live it in pain or a sense of balance.
Facebook Posts have a longer "shelf life", remaining towards the top longer (depending on how many friends are feeding into it) and tend to get exposure because people love to scroll down through posts even if they are hours or even days old. Getting the scoop on the latest news is a world-wide obsession these days. Blog Posts have even a longer shelf life, with customers reading back through years worth of archives in order to find information they want. Facebook is used during downtime at work, lunch hours, but more often in the evenings, and the most on weekends.
4
Facebook users also reward character conservation: posts under 80 characters get 66% more engagement. You want customers to do something with what you share - you want them to act and continue the viral spread of your content. Opportunities for action and engagement include questions, contests, requests, hashtags, and even a simple link. Give your customers a way to interact productively without ever leaving your post. Ask people to "comment," "share," or "retweet" your post. A visitor to a social site or your website only spends milliseconds deciding if they want to respond to your content. CONTINUED NEXT WEEK

THE MAGNETIC POWER OF SELF-CONFIDENT PEOPLE PART 6.1
MAGNETIC SELF CONFIDENCE IS A PRACTICE NOT AN EMOTION By Dr. Ron D. Ross
When it comes to confidence you cannot depend on “feeling” confident. There is a reason: your emotions are unreliable. One week you will feel full of hope, and the next week you will despair. One day you will be angry, the next day you will be unruffled. One moment you will feel sad and weepy, and a second later you will be joyful and composed. Confidence, like anger, joy, and contentment, is an emotion. Sometimes you will feel smart, good-looking and powerful. Sometimes all your confidence leaks out of you like sieve and you feel like a clumsy dolt. Therefore, self-confidence is a practice, a way of acting, not an emotion. Emotions are too volatile and impulsive. Actions, on the other hand, can be established and predictable. Here are six ways to act confident whether you feel confident or not: First of all, maintain good posture. Stand up straight, lift up your head, keep your shoulders erect, and get your hands out of your pockets. If you want to demonstrate power, put your hands on your hips and set your feet farther apart. That’s how the superheroes do it, right? So you do it too and you will think, act and feel like Superman. Body language researcher Amy Cuddy told a TED audience that good posture increases confidence-boosting testosterone indicating to those around you that you are confident. Another habit to learn that will have a big impact on how you feel is to look people in the eye. Have you ever been in a conversation when eye contact felt uncomfortable? The next time it happens do NOT look away. It makes you
look suspicious, even deceitful. If you can’t look someone in the eye look at their chin or that small spot between their eyebrows. They won’t know the difference and you will look confident. A bit more difficult to do but even more effective at overcoming nervousness is to project your voice. Speak just a little louder and a little slower than you normally would. Emphasize power words and make your voice interesting to listen to. Folks around you will say, “He sounded very confident!”
Save 15%
Here is something you definitely can do starting tomorrow morning: dress with confidence. There is no better way to show the world you are a person of significance than to look like a significant person. Spruce up your face, comb your hair, shine your shoes, and press your shirt and trousers; when you look good, you feel good. But there’s more, when you feel good your voice sounds more resonant, and your gestures are authentic.

Another way you can act confident when you don’t feel confident is to be polite and mannerly in all your ways. Speak politely, greet everyone graciously, compliment others, use a person’s name whenever you can, and inquire appropriately about their life or business. Confidence is not about drawing attention to yourself; it is not about how great you are; it is about making other people feel good about themselves.

And finally, the easiest thing to do to project confidence is to smile! Anyone who smiles is considered confident and trustworthy, and any face that smiles is beautiful. When you smile you will feel euphoric because your brain releases chemicals that make you feel better. How cool is that?

Most fruits are naturally low in fat, sodium and calories. None have cholesterol. People who eat fruit as part of an overall healthy diet are likely to have a reduced risk of heart disease, including heart attack and stroke. It also may protect against certain types of cancers, and reduce the risk of obesity and Type 2 diabetes. Fruits are the source of many essential nutrients that aren’t consumed as much as they should be, including potassium, dietary fiber, vitamin C and folate (folic acid). Diets rich in potassium may help to maintain healthy blood pressure. Sources of potassium include bananas, prunes and prune juice, dried peaches and apricots, cantaloupe, honeydew melon and orange juice. Dietary fiber from fruits helps reduce blood cholesterol levels and may lower the risk of heart disease. Fiber is important for proper bowel function, and helps reduce constipation and diverticulosis. Fiber-containing foods such as fruits help us feel full with fewer calories. (Note: Fruit juices contain little or no fiber.) Folate (folic acid) helps form red blood cells. In women of childbearing age, folic acid reduces the risk of neural tube defects, spina bifida and anencephaly during fetal development. My recipe for fruit salad is combined with quinoa to make it a healthier and more versatile dish for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Quinoa is native to Bolivia and is a relative of Swiss chard, spinach and beets. It comes in three varieties (whole grain white, red and black) and is gluten free and packed with nutritional benefits. Quinoa also is a complete protein, which means it provides all nine essential amino acids necessary for good health. Your body can’t produce these nutrients itself, so you have to get them frequently through food. Just one cup contains 8 grams of protein, 5 grams of fiber, plus significant amounts of iron, magnesium, folate and heart-healthy omega 3 fatty acids.
1 1/3 cup water 2/3 cup quinoa (whole grain white, red or black varieties) 2 cups sweet cherries, stemmed 1/2 pound watermelon, cut in small wedges 4 small plums, pitted and cut into wedges 1 medium papaya, peeled, seeded and sliced 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh mint Poppy Seed Dressing or Spicy Chili Vinaigrette

SNIPPETZ™ WEEKLY MAGAZINE results were as follows: Those who did the 150 minutes a week of moderate exercise (for example, brisk walking) had a 57 percent lower risk of death. That’s significantly more than the 30 percent previously calculated for that level of exercise. The big news, however, for those of us who aren’t fans of exercise, is that 15 minutes a day, five days a week, is a good target for seniors. year after we lost Eric Shinseki, probably the best Department of Veterans Affairs secretary we’ve ever had, what’s been accomplished at the VA? Answers: Not much. House Speaker John Boehner recently had scathing remarks for the VA. He said, for example, that only one employee involved in the nationwide hidden wait list scandal has been let go. Boehner had to backtrack and rethink that. He conceded that some retired with benefits, got transfers or took paid leave, so, strictly speaking, the number of people dumped is higher than one.

ildew? But we live in Colorado! Our semi-arid climate hardly seems like somewhere mildew would thrive. Yet if you have seen it then you know you’ve got it and during an especially dry season it can be a problem. Powdery Mildew can be severe in warm dry climates. Sound familiar? Yeah warm and dry sounds like our year so far and that white powdery look on your plants isn’t exactly desirable. The spore does need humidity in order to germinate. So it is commonly found in crowded or overgrown areas and is more common in the shade. The mildew is also host specific, so it cannot survive without the right host plant. In Colorado hosts include Lilac, Ash, Roses, Virginia Creeper, Lupine, and Squash and Cucumbers, among others.

Compare and contrast that to the assessment of our new VA secretary, Robert McDonald, former president and CEO of the consumer products company Procter & Gamble. He says that over 900 employees have been fired, 60 specifically in relation to the wait list scandal. Real numbers were more like 75 people investigated and eight fired. He later claimed he misspoke.
overhead watering and make a new habit of watering at the base of your plants if powdery mildew is a problem. If your plant is overcrowded, a light pruning will increase air circulation and help reduce infection. In the fall remove as much of the infected parts of the plant as possible and destroy them. Do not compost! Composting can lead to the disease spreading and encourage it to over winter. And as soon as it is apparent that you have an infection eliminate any applications of nitrogen so you don’t stress the plant further. This also limits the production of new succulent growth that is more susceptible to the disease.
If cultural practices alone do not work, then pairing them with the application of a fungicide might be necessary. Sulfur, neem oil and potassium bicarbonate are a few common ones to look for. And when shopping for plants that are known to be susceptible to powdery mildew, look for resistant varieties. So what can you do about it? There There are usually several to choose are several cultural practices that from. when paired with a fungicide can yield good results. First it is good to ditch the habit of watering the leaves of your plants. Even though the spore does not need water to Macie McCord infect the plant, frequent overhead McCord’s Garden Center watering can create enough humid& Landscaping ity for the spores to germinate and 719-375-3573 can lead to infection from many other diseases. Boehner says that Congress gave the VA more than $16 billion (that’s with a “B”) to fix the problems of long waits for appointments by opening new clinics, starting up the new Choice program and hiring more medical staff. McDonald said that wait times were down by 18 percent. The reality: The number of veterans waiting more than 90 days for an appointment at VA clinics has doubled. Sad to say, the new VA secretary has some problems. It doesn’t help that he told a homeless veteran that he had been in “special forces.” McDonald and VA public relations had to jump in later and say that, no, McDonald wasn’t ever in the special operations forces. He finished Ranger training and left the Army.

HONEY-GLAZED SALMON IS FAST, NUTRITIOUS
S
hopping for salmon at your local fish market or grocery store can be a real-life geography lesson for your kids, so be sure to take them along. Alaska, Maine, Chile, Norway -- the places of origin read like a world atlas as you check out the signs and labels. Spin a globe when you get home and discover together where your dinner was swimming. Besides sharpening geography skills, this good-for-you fish -- rich in hearthealthy omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins and minerals -- is also super easy to prepare. All this makes a family hungry! Here’s our favorite recipe, made with a sweet honey glaze that young sous chefs can stir up. Top with chopped nuts or herbs from your garden, and roast in a hot oven while the table is being set, napkins are slipped into rings and beverages are poured.
HONEY GLAZED SALMON FILLETS 4 salmon fillets, about 6 ounces each 1/4 cup olive oil 2 tablespoons honey Salt, to taste
1. Preheat oven to 425 F. 2. Line a baking sheet with foil and spray with cooking spray 3. Place salmon fillets skin-side down on the prepared sheet. Sprinkle with salt. 4. Pour olive oil and honey into a small bowl, and stir to combine well. Spoon the mixture generously over fillets. Press nuts on top or sprinkle with herbs. 5. Bake in oven until completely cooked through, about 10-15 minutes, or until fish flakes readily with tip of a fork. Use spatula to transfer to dinner plates. 6. Serve hot over salad greens that have been tossed with a light vinaigrette and topped with thin lemon slices, or set a lemon wedge to the side. Serves 4.

TIP: As summer approaches, serve with fresh grilled peaches for a tasty, sweet, modern side. To prepare, cut two almost-ripe peaches in half. Let kids remove the pits and brush the cut sides with the honeyolive-oil mixture before coating the salmon. Spray a grill pan with cooking spray, and place halves cut-side down on medium heat on your stove for 5 to 7 minutes, or until grill marks appear. Flip over to rounded side for an additional minute. Set on dinner plates with salmon and salad. *** Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide. LIVING GOD’S GIFTS bringing Christ into your financial life by Chuck Maher, CFP®
INVESTING FROM A BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVE
...BRING CHRIST INTO OUR FINANCIAL LIVES
C
GRADUATION A BIT OF ADVICE
ongratulations! Making it through high school, college and for some of you graduate school wasn’t easy, but you did do it. My hat is off to you and to a job well done. Now where do you go from here? Most of you will be entering the workforce. Your education has provided you with the skill sets that you will need to succeed. You will be paid well for what you do, but what will you do with the money you earn? Here is my advice to help you put a handle on your financial life.
PAY YOURSELF FIRST Let me repeat: pay yourself first. Before you pay the rent, buy groceries or go shopping – before you spend a dime. Pay yourself first. The secret to financial success is simple: pay yourself first. Make the commitment, now, to invest a portion of your income for the long term and never touch it until you are ready to retire. A great place to start is 10% of your paycheck, though 15% would be even better. If your employer provides a 401(k) plan, take advantage of it, if not, set up a systematic investment plan with a good equity income mutual fund company. When you make long-term investing your first bill and pay it automatically you avoid entirely the trap of spending and then trying to save what’s left.
BUILD AN EMERGENCY FUND Whether it’s a car repair, a veterinary bill, a friend’s destination wedding or whatever, stuff happens and it usually costs money. To avoid the financial surprises that can wreak havoc on your finances, build an emergency fund. A good target is 3 to 6 months of your household expenses. That can be a tall order but, like your long-term savings, if you commit a percentage of your wages, you will be amazed at how much you can accumulate over a short period of time.
INSURE YOUR EARNING POWER Right now your most valuable financial asset is your ability to earn an income – protect it. If you had a goose that laid golden eggs I suspect you would do everything in your power to make sure that nothing happened to the goose. Well, you are the goose and your ability to make money is the golden egg. What happens if you are no longer able to earn an income? How do the bills get paid? That’s the role of disability insurance – to provide money when
Honoring God with Your Financial Blessings CHUCK MAHER CFP®
you can’t. Oftentimes employers provide disability insurance as part of their benefit package. If that option is not available to you, I would encourage you to seek individual coverage. Protect the golden goose.

GET OUT OF DEBT
Securities offered through and supervised by Wilbanks Securities, Inc. Member FINRA & SIPC 4334 NW Expressway, Suite 222 Oklahoma City, OK 73116 405-842-0202 Fee Based Wilbanks Securities Advisory
If you’re like most graduates, in order to make it through school, you piled on the debt, in the form of student loans. If you let them, they will haunt for years to come. Develop a plan to pay off those loans as quickly as possible and stay out of debt. Debt is the single biggest detriment to your financial success. Don’t take on debt and don’t cosign for the debt of anyone else. Develop the attitude that if you can’t afford to pay cash you really don’t need it.
SPEND THE REST I bet you didn’t see that coming. Life was meant to be enjoyed. You worked hard to get to where you’re at and in order to continue your success you can expect to continue to work hard. You can also expect to be compensated for that work. Once you have your financial house in order, enjoy the fruit of your labor. You have earned it. No one knows what the future will hold. However, I can guarantee that there are surprises on the horizon – both good and bad. For those who have readied themselves, who have put their financial houses in order, they are prepared to weather the storms when they come and to take advantage of the opportunities when they present themselves. Only you can determine your financial success. Again congratulations on a job well done.

Mel McFarland will discuss some of the trains that travelled the Pass from the late 1800s to the 1970s. The well-known railroads through the pass were the Colorado Midland Railway, which ran from Colorado City to the mines in Leadville and Aspen, and later the Midland Terminal Railway, which connected Divide with Cripple Creek. However, there were other railroads that travelled Ute Pass, including a wandering caboose or two! Mel McFarland is a Native of Colorado Springs and grew up “in the shadow of the remains of the Colorado Midland.” He is the author of The Midland Route: A Colorado Midland Guide and Data Book, and is a popular speaker, artist, photographer, and model railroader. This event is free to the public. Light refreshments will be served. For more information, visit our website at www.palmerdividehistory.org.
