hen one thinks of the different mediums an artist can use, it’s highly unlikely that wax is among the first to come to mind. Perhaps because the only wax works of art many people are familiar with are those of celebrities that reside in museums. And those creepy things don’t really look like art. The fact is that wax sculptures have been around since the Middle Ages and possibly earlier. Of course, they weren’t of random celebrities dressed up

In fact, this practice was fairly common throughout Europe as part of the traditional funereal ceremonies of important people. Additionally, wax models, in the form of figurines, were often presented to churches as offerings.

Yes, wax has been around in different forms and with different purposes for a very long time. With that in mind, Snippetz felt it was time for us to bring the history of wax sculpting to life!

MADAME TUSSAUD Probably the most recognizable name in the realm of wax sculptors, Madame Tussaud was born Anna Maria “Marie” Tussaud on December 1, 1761 in Strasbourg, France. Marie’s father, Joseph Grosholtz, was killed in the Seven Years’ War and so her mother, AnneMarie Walder took her infant daughter to Bern, Switzerland. There, AnneMarie worked as a housekeeper for Dr. Philippe Curtius, a physician with a talent for wax modeling. Marie became attached to Curtius, who taught her his unique talent, which he developed as a way to illustrate anatomy and later, to create portraits.

Marie lived an interesting life, getting herself put on the short list for execution during the Reign of Terror, a period of intense violence of the French Revolution. She dodged that bullet (or guillotine) and went on to marry François Tussaud in 1795.

She continued her work in wax modeling and from 1780 to 1789, when the French Revolution began, she created some of her most famous celebrity portraits, including Benjamin Franklin.

THAT WAS THEN, THIS IS NOW Wax modeling and sculpting has evolved since the days of Madame Tussuad. Gone are the days of a single artist working to create a figure. Instead, in order to achieve the desired realism for a museum-quality wax sculpture, an entire team of artists work together to bring it to life, figuratively speaking, of course.

First, the team must assemble a solid collection of photographs and measurements of the subject. To do this, the museum must determine exactly how they want that subject to m immortalized. Should he or she be smiling, waving, holding a weapon? What type of posture does the person have?

And don’t forget the teeth. A person’s smile is an important part of their identity. Oh, and their hair. That’s a biggie too. So, naturally, dentists and barbers are interviewed to get those minute details just right.

Using that massive amount of infor-

mation, the artists can finally begin working to create a plaster mold of the subject’s head, using good old regular clay. Once they have that completed, the artists then pour hot wax into the mold. Often, beeswax is mixed with manufactured petroleum-based wax and then artificial coloring and chemicals are added to the concoction to help the final product stay strong and heatresistant.

After allowing the wax to cool, it is removed from the mold and assembly on the other key features can begin. Prosthetic eyes matching the subject’s eye color as closely as possible are added, along with porcelain teeth (kind of like dentures) and real human hair. Each hair is applied one at a time to the head, eyebrows, eyelashes, and sometimes the arms and chest (depending on where it’s needed based on the subject).

Seamstresses and costume consultants work together to create the model’s wardrobe and to fit it to the figure’s body. With the sculpture complete, designers then create a scene using backgrounds, props, and furnishings to match the moment in time they intend to capture.

As you might guess, this process is done by a trained worker using a tiny needle and can take up to 60 hours to complete.

The whole process usually takes at least six months to complete but it’s not uncommon for it to take longer.

The Royal London Wax Museum’s model of President Bill Clinton took eight months and the model of Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien took more than a year. The total cost can anywhere from $10,000 to $25,000.

Next, painters apply a thin layer of translucent paint to even out the model’s skin tone and to match any distinguishing marks (like a freckle or mole) from the real person. Finally, the pieces can be assemble together and then it’s off to wardrobe!

Colorado Springs actually had its own wax museum, once upon a time. It was called The Hall of Presidents Wax Museum and was open from 1969 to 1996.

Located just south of Bott Avenue off 21st Street, it held wax sculptures of 42 presidents and various Disney characters, including Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Possibly the most unnerving sculpture was that of Abraham Lincoln on his death bed: the model’s chest moved up and down as he breathed. Rumor has it that when the museum closed, many of the figures went to a museum in Dallas.

They think they are the smartest cat in the house and consider everyone else “the little people.” They are convinced no one is as clever or good looking as they are and they strut with their nose in the air to flaunt their disgusting conceit. They are overbearing and rude. They harbor a sense of superiority over others that may attract attention but seldom are they truly attractive.

Assurance, on the other hand, is an attractive personality characteristic.

People who are self-assured, who believe in their own abilities, are delightful to be around and attract and inspire others.

The following demonstrates some of the differences between assurance and arrogance: Assurance calms down – arrogance stirs up. The word assurance insinuates the idea of guaranty – a promise that no matter what happens, all will be well. People who are self-assured, who have the aura of tranquility, who are composed, polite and caring have a magnetism about themselves.

The arrogant stirs the spot and creates anxiety, instability, and timidity in everyone around him/her.

Because everything that happens is about them, they disregard the needs of others, and always focus on themselves.

Assurance liberates – arrogance frustrates. Self-assured people are aware of both their strengths and weaknesses. They know they do not know everything about everything and yet they demonstrate inner strength. They pretend to know a great deal about everything while they insinuate that others know very little. Their arrogance discourages participation, hinders progress and diminishes likeability.

4. In medium bowl, stir together nonfat yogurt and remaining 1/4 cup sugar, 1 tablespoon lemon juice, and 1/2 teaspoon lemon peel.

5. In 8 by 8-inch ceramic or glass baking dish, arrange half of ladyfingers. Brush with half of lemon syrup.

Spoon blueberry mixture evenly over ladyfingers. Arrange remaining ladyfingers over blueberries. Brush with remaining lemon syrup. Spoon yogurt mixture on top, spreading evenly. Cover and refrigerate overnight.

To serve, top tiramisu with remaining 3/4 cup blueberries and garnish with mint sprig. Serves 8.

Tip: We tested this recipe with both soft and hard (Italian-style) ladyfingers (sometimes called Savoiardi) and had good results with both types.

COOL CUCUMBERS

C

ucumbers are a go-to vegetable for salads, but there are many ways to incorporate this cool, crunchy vegetable into everything from appetizers to drinks. Cucumbers are one of the oldest cultivated crops and have more than 100 different varieties. It’s believed they were first cultivated in India.

Cucumbers are at their best when young and tender with a crunchy texture. They come in many sizes. Some of the most popular varieties are the Dosakayi, popular in India for curries and stews; crunchy “slicers,” used in salads; and pickles like gherkins, dills and sweet French cornichons.

The English cucumber is longer and narrower than the slicer varieties. Its seeds are much smaller and the skin is thinner.

This type of cucumber may be labeled as “seedless” or “burpless.” It usually comes wrapped in plastic and unwaxed. The taste of English cucumbers also is less bitter, and some find it almost sweet.

Cucumbers have about 15 calories per 100 grams, and the peel is a good source of dietary fiber and is a mild diuretic, which helps to eliminate toxic materials in the gut. It’s also a great source of potassium and is low in sodium, which helps with blood pressure and heart rates.

Cucumbers are high in vitamin K, which helps with bone strength. It also has established a role in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease by limiting neuronal damage in the brain.

When purchasing cucumbers, select ones that have a firm texture and a bright-green color. There shouldn’t be any spots, cuts or breaks in the skin. A wrinkled, large or yellowish cucumber means it is over ripe, lacking nutrients and tough.

Before using or storing, cucumbers should be washed using cool, clear water and dried thoroughly to get rid of any surface dirt and pesticide residue. They may re-

ttracting butterflies to your garden can be as easy as 1, 2, and 3. The first thing you should do is to refrain from using pesticides whenever possible. Secondly, plant a variety of host plants for butterflies to lay their eggs and the caterpillars to later feed from.

And lastly, plant flowers that provide nectar for the adult butterflies and other beneficial pollinators. The last step is also for you because who doesn’t benefit from a garden full of beautiful flowers!

f you were a student and had Navient (aka Sallie Mae) as your loan service provider, you might be getting a refund check in the mail.

The Department of Justice nailed Navient to the tune of $60 million in refunds and penalties after 78,000 service members were overcharged on interest for student loans. It was the first lawsuit against student loan servicers, and it sends a powerful message.

The loans in question date back to 2005, so even if you’re not recently out of school, you might be in the group getting compensation. Additionally, Navient must contact all three of the big credit bureaus to ask that negative

The first step doesn’t necessarily mean that chemicals can never be

used, but that you should use chemicals as a last resort. Many times there are physical or cultural controls that will do the job before you ever have to reach for the spray bottle. For example using the “squish method” for aphids or yellow sticky traps for white flies can sometimes work better and faster than a spray would. In some instances a chemical may be needed and should be applied carefully, keeping in mind where butterflies and other beneficial insects, such as bees, are feeding.

Many host plants may already be planted near or at our homes. Gambel Oak, Cottonwoods, Willows, Chokecherry and Ash are host plants to many butterfly and moth larvae.

You can attract more by planting, Dill, Asters, Butterfly Weed, Hollyhock’s, Lupine, Honeysuckle, Violets, and Pansies. A successful butterfly garden provides a habitat for future generations of butterflies as well as the current years. Then by adding nectar sources like Blanketflower, Hyssop, Bee Balm, Penstemon, Evening Primrose, and Zinnias you will be well on your way to a butterfly paradise, not to mention a stunning garden full of beautiful bloomers.

I

’m obsessed with fresh strawberries right now. Sweet to the taste and bright-red to the eye, this luscious berry can be tossed into just about anything to turn an ordinary meal into a celebration.

Enjoy this prime strawberry season with me, and head out to a pickyour-own field or farmer’s market.

En route, challenge your family to think of all the ways you can use your bountiful baskets of juicy berries. As kids shout out their favorites, such as strawberries and waffles, peanut butter and strawberry jam sandwiches and strawberry ice-cream cones, you’ll discover how the versatile berries can be worked into any meal of the day.

Back home, learn new ways to use your bounty -- like stirring up strawberry-rhubarb jam or strawberry salsa. I like to use strawberries as a garnish, I toss them, along with fresh mint, into a chilled pitcher of water, and I’m always incorporating them in supper salads using other fresh local produce, nuts and cheese.

Here is a simple salad that’s a headliner on our Father’s Day lunch menu. Young kids can prep the berries and peppery arugula while you quickly toast the pecans in a pan on

1 1/2 cups fresh strawberries 1 1/2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar 3/4 cup pecan halves 2 tablespoons olive oil Salt and pepper to taste 4 cups loosely packed baby arugula leaves* 1/2 cup crumbled mild feta cheese (optional)

1. Let school-age kids wash, hull, dry and halve the strawberries. Place in a bowl and toss with 1/2 tablespoon of the balsamic vinegar. Set aside for 5 minutes.

2. Meanwhile, an adult should toast the pecans in a small, dry skillet over medium-low heat. Shake the pan to avoid overscorching until the nuts are fragrant and lightly browned. Cool completely.

3. In a large bowl, whisk together the remaining vinegar, oil, salt and pepper. Add strawberries, arugula and pecans, and toss. Taste and season as needed.

4. Divide mixture on individual plates, and dot with the feta cheese, if you wish.
