very day, adventure junkies push their bodies to the limit attempting to accomplish something most people cannot. Whether it’s completing the highest skydive in history or sailing around the world all alone. And let’s not forget, scaling the tallest mountain on the planet. It’s pretty safe to say that mankind has essentially conquered the earth. But there’s one part, one HUGE part, which we will probably never be able to conquer, and that’s the ocean. Sure, we’ve studied it and mapped it and measured it and basically gotten a pretty good idea of what it’s all about. The Mariana Trench, however, is the deepest part of any ocean on the face of the planet. And it’s much too deep for humans to risk

The trench itself was discovered during the Challenger expedition in 1875, in which the recorded depth was 26,850 feet, based on the sounding technology used at the time. As technology advanced, so did the accuracy of the measurements for the trench’s depths that were recorded on subsequent expeditions.

On average, the trench is about 43 miles wide but measures 1,580 miles long. The really remarkable part is that, at its deepest, an area called the Challenger Deep, the trench reaches a depth of at least 6.831 miles. Not impressed? Consider this: Mount Everest, as we all know, is the highest point on the earth. It measures 29,035 feet. If Mount Everest were dropped into the Challenger Deep, its summit would still be 7,166 feet below the surface of the ocean.
The Mariana Trench is the deepest part of any ocean in the world and is located in the Pacific Ocean, to the east of the Mariana Islands (hence the name). Fun fact: the Mariana Islands, also called Las Marianas, were named in honor of the Spanish Queen Mariana of Austria, widow of Philip IV of Spain. Anyway, the islands are part of an arc of islands that was indirectly formed by the subduction of the edge of the Pacific Plate beneath the smaller Mariana Plate. The movement of these two plates causes water that is trapped in the Mariana Plate to explode upward, forming the volcanic Mariana Islands.
EXPLORING THE MARIANA TRENCH
Due to its incredible depth, the Mariana Trench is shrouded in darkness, with frigid water temperatures and crushing water pressure at 8 tons or 16,000 pounds per square inch (psi). To put it into perspective, it takes 300 psi to crack a macadamia nut; 15 psi to crack a human skull; and 5 psi to collapse your windpipe. Yup, the pressure down there is pretty intense.

PUZZLES, TRIVIA,
While it was observed in some areas of the Mariana Trench that life could be sustained, many scientists posited that life simply couldn’t handle the intense pressure of the Challenger Deep. But to truly know the answer to such a question, we just had to see for ourselves.

who worked in coordination with United States Navy Lt. Donald Walsh. The team used a U.S. Navy submersible, called the Trieste to descend to 35,810 feet into the Challenger Deep. Another fun fact: the Challenger Deep was first located in 1951 by the British survey ship, Challenger II (hence its name). Their expedition was the first and only of its kind for more than 50 years. The descent took the pair five hours to complete and they were only able to spend 20 minutes at the bottom.
MARIANA TRENCH MARINE LIFE
You’ve probably guessed that the water in the Mariana Trench reaches very cold temperatures the further down you go. At the bottom of the Challenger Deep, the water temperature is about 33-39º Fahrenheit. Knowing that, it might surprise you to learn that the temperature in certain parts of the sea floor in the trench can be as high as 572º Fahrenheit. The reason behind the incredible temperature discrepancy? Hydrothermal vents. These vents are formed by the spreading tectonic plates and release hydrogen sulfide and other minerals into the ocean from below. Consequently, the marine life that resides within the Mariana Trench, especially closer to the trench’s floor, have adapted by developing certain proteins that allow them to eat, process food and reproduce in spite of the radical temperature differences. One such unique species is the vent crab,

which actually thrives near hydrothermal vents. Angler Fish, those creepy fish that have the massive teeth and the bioluminescent dangly thing hanging off the front of their heads, also live in the Mariana Trench. One variety of snailfish was found at 26,715 feet, officially setting a new record for the deepest living fish known to man. The fish was a white translucent color with broad wing-like fins and an eel-like tail. It was seen slowly gliding over the bottom of the ocean floor. Although there has been some debate as to the veracity of his claims, Piccard recorded seeing a flatfish of about one foot long and a shrimp during his voyage. However, in July 2011, a research expedition deployed untethered dropcams called landers that were equipped with digital video and lights to explore the ocean floor. The dropcams recorded many living organisms during the expedition, including some gigantic single-cell amoebas, measuring more than 4 inches long. But those are just a few examples of the estimated 5,000 newly-identified species discovered since mankind has ventured into the depths of the Mariana Trench. And while it’s tempting to assume that those lifeforms are the result of years of evolution and adaptability, that’s simply not the case. In fact, scientists have stated that some of the species we’ve discovered in trenches around the world are actually the most prehistoric lifeforms on the entire planet; some of which have remained unchanged

• Even though the Mariana Trench is the deepest location on earth, it isn’t the closest to the earth’s core. Because the earth’s radius is about 16 miles less at the North and South Poles than at the equator, certain parts of the Arctic Ocean are at least 8.1 miles closer to the earth’s core than the Challenger Deep portion of the trench.

In many cases, parents or one of the parents will deny what they want to do in life in order to show responsibility and commitment to the family. Many times, there can be a balance between a parent working toward living a passionate life and still owning responsibility for what has already been chosen, such as children.

He began to complain about their work ethic and their painting skills. I caught myself about to join in on his noxious strain of conversation, and I decided not to participate.

IN DEFENSE OF OKRA
T
he words “slimy,” “gelatinous” or “mushy” aren’t associated with very many vegetables ... except when one is discussing okra. Okra was introduced to America via African slave ships and was commonly known as gumbo, which means okra in some African dialects. African captives planted and prepared okra dishes from their native land and combined them with vegetables that grew in America. Today, okra is as Southern as sweet tea, but it has spread around the United States and also prepared in Indian and Middle Eastern cuisines. Okra pods are at their best from late June through September. Because okra thrives in hot climates and requires full sun, it stores a thick, watery liquid inside its pod. This flavorful, gelatinous liquid is the perfect thickener for soups and stews. Okra is a rich source of dietary fiber and is a good source of vitamins and minerals. These include vitamin A, B, C and K, as well as zinc, copper, potassium, manganese and magnesium. Okra is at its most flavorful when its pods are small, tender and slender. For roasting, frying or grilling, select pods that are 1-4 inches long. Longer pods tend to be tough, and should be used only for long stewing methods like soups, stews and gumbos. Choose okra pods that are fresh, brightcolored, firm and have a bit of fuzz. The stem ends turn brown quickly, and this is normal; however, there shouldn’t be brown spots or wrinkling on the pods. Okra should be stored loosely wrapped in a plastic bag in the crisper section of the refrigerator and used within a few days. To avoid the slimy texture that’s often associated with okra, follow these simple tips: • Wash and dry the pods thoroughly before using; • Use the whole pod, or wait to cut the okra until immediately before using; • Use the whole pod for quick cooking methods -- grilling, roasting, frying -- to reduce slime; • Don’t crowd the okra, as it promotes

Add okra, remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt and pepper, and red pepper flakes, and saute over medium-high heat 3 minutes. Add tomatoes, vinegar and sugar, and saute 3 minutes or until skins begin to burst. Transfer okra mixture to a large bowl. 3. Add shrimp to skillet. Saute 2-3 minutes or just until the shrimp turns pink. Add garlic and saute 30 seconds. Stir in okra mixture, and saute for 1-2 minutes or until hot. Stir in the basil or parsley. Sprinkle with lemon juice. 4. Place Romaine and arugula into individual salad bowls or on a large serving platter. Spoon shrimp and okra mixture on top of lettuce. Serve with wedge of lemon. Serves 4.

• On July 4, 1826, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, the second and third presidents of the United States, respectively, die on the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. Both men had been central in drafting the historic document. • On June 30, 1859, Frenchman Emile Blondin becomes the first daredevil to walk across Niagara Falls on a tightrope. Wearing pink tights and a yellow tunic, Blondin crossed a cable about 2 inches in diameter and 1,100-feet long using only a balancing pole. • On July 5, 1865, in London, revivalist preacher William Booth and his wife Catherine establish the Christian Mission, modeled after the British army, with women given ranks equal with men. In 1878, the organization was renamed the Salvation Army, and two years later
the first U.S. branch opened in Pennsylvania. • On July 2, 1881, President James A. Garfield is shot as he walks through a railroad waiting room in Washington, D.C. His assailant, Charles J. Guiteau, was a disgruntled and perhaps insane office seeker. Garfield died 80 days later of blood poisoning. • On July 1, 1951, Cleveland Indians ace Bob Feller pitches the third no-hit game of his career, making him the first modern pitcher ever to throw three no-hitters. Feller made his first start in 1936, when he was just 17. • On July 3, 1985, the blockbuster action-comedy “Back to the Future,â€? in which the iconic DeLorean concept car is transformed into a time-travel device, premieres. • On June 29, 1995, the American space shuttle Atlantis docks with the Russian space station Mir to form the largest man-made satellite ever to orbit the Earth. by Samantha Weaver • It was U.S. Vice President Hubert Humphrey who made the following sage observation: “Compassion is not weakness and concern for the unfortunate is not socialism.”
• Chop suey is not actually a Chinese dish; it was invented in California. • Dick Simon, one of the founders of the Simon and Schuster publishing company, was struggling in his business when he visited his aunt in 1924. She had been looking for a book of crossword puzzles to give to her daughter, but the puzzles being relatively new (first appearing in newspapers in 1913), there was no compilation available. Seeing an opportunity for his fledgling business, Simon and his partner, Lincoln Schuster, published a book of puzzles right away. The puzzle book was an instant best seller, and its revenues supported Simon and Schuster while the publishing company was establishing itself.
• You might be surprised to learn that in 1967, the Monkees chose Jimi Hendrix to be the opening act for their summer tour of the U.S. The pairing didn’t last long, though; Hendrix discreetly left the tour after he was banned by the Daughters of the American Revolution for being too sexually suggestive. • If you have a particularly quiet friend, he or she might suffer from laliophobia, a fear of speaking. • Those who study such things say that if you’re playing a game of Monopoly, you’re most likely to land on B&O Railroad and Illinois Avenue. *** THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: The great secret of success is to go through life as a man who never gets used up. That is possible for him who never argues and strives with men and facts, but in all experience retires upon himself, and looks for the ultimate cause of things in himself.” -- Albert Schweitzer © King Features Synd., Inc.

THE RULES OF MONEY by Chuck Maher, CFP®
Q
uickly now, which would you rather have at the end of 31 days – a million dollars or a penny that has been doubled each and every day? If you are like most people you would have chosen the $1 million. Unfortunately, like most people you would have chosen poorly. That humble penny, doubling every day, would have grown to over $10 million -$10,737,418.24 to be exact. Don’t believe me? Do the math. One cent becomes two, two becomes four, four becomes eight, eight sixteen and on it goes until 5 million becomes 10 million. That is the power of compounded interest, a power that is often overlooked and grossly misunderstood when we talk about money. Here are a few other rules of money that are oftentimes overlooked.
Is It A Need Or Is It A Want How we choose to spend our money is a choice. By understanding the difference between what is really needed and what it is we want we can avoid becoming a victim of circumstance. Our financial needs are really quite simple, food, shelter and clothing. Everything else is merely a want; however, our wants can be endless. Too often I find that many have put themselves in an unnecessary position of hardship (read debt) because they failed to realize the difference between what is needed and what is wanted. By making the choice to live well within your means you can put yourself in the position of financial control. And that is a strong financial place to be.
The Endless Search For More It is only natural to want a better life. A raise at work or a new position may well make it possible to get a nicer home or a better car. Unfortunately, for too many, it becomes far too easy to presume on the future – that those raises and promotions will continue – and establish a lifestyle based upon those assumptions. When the raises and promotions don’t come they oftentimes put themselves in the position where
debt is used to satisfy their expectations. Thus creating a lifestyle, based upon debt, that can lead to financial ruin. It is better to find happiness somewhere other than in our possessions.

Every Option Has Costs

By understanding the opportunity costs of our financial choices and making the time to understand those choices we can make better financial decisions. Every time we choose to spend money we are making a choice. We are giving up other opportunities in order to fulfill a current need or want. Is it better to buy new furniture or set aside the money for the kid’s college education? I don’t know the answer. That is your choice. But I do know it is better to be in control of your decisions than to allow circumstances, or worse, short term wants to drive your choices.

Sunken Cost Myth We have all been in situations where we have incurred expenses that can never be recovered. Whether it be a car that needs a new motor, an investment that only goes South or something else that seems to require an endless stream of money. The sunken cost myth is just that, a myth, a belief that somehow if we only invest more time, more money or more effort we can recover what has been promised. That is a fallacy. Don’t throw good money after bad. In investing, I find too often investors will hold onto an investment and even invest more with the hopes that they will at some point at least break even. The cost unfortunately was lost opportunity and better use of resources. Make your decision to invest your time, your money, or your talents based upon the facts today and not upon your choices made yesterday.
Risk With every financial choice comes risk, especially when we make the decision to invest. When we accept a greater risk with our investments it is reasonable to expect

a potentially greater return. If you choose to invest in US government bonds you can expect a high degree of safety and a very low return on your investment. When you invest in a US corporation you have the opportunity for a much higher return, however, that return carries with it the risk of losing some or even all of your investment. I would encourage you to avoid investments that promise high guaranteed returns with little or no risk. There ain’t no such thing as a free lunch. Sadly money does not come with operating instructions. For most of us a lot of time was spent on learning how to make money. Unfortunately, throughout that education, not a lot of time was spent on how to manage money and use it effectively. Make the time to learn how to make sound financial choices. In the long-term you’ll be glad you did.
