hey say if something is meant to be it’s written in the stars. That statement caused a lot of confusion for a young writer we tried her very best to see what exactly was written there. And who are “they” anyway? Maybe “they” are the people who came up with the constellations, those enigmatic pictures we are supposed to be able to see in the night sky. But if we’re being truthful here, not all the constellations are that easy to find. So, who came up with the constellations anyway? Was it someone who had a bit too much to drink and when they looked up at the sky, they saw some images created by the stars that all the other sober folks just didn’t see? And does it make them any less interesting to find out they aren’t something cool like the souls of our ancestors watching over us, but rather they’re just massive

balls of gas burning away? Regardless of what we think of them now, the constellations have been around longer than any of us and we should certainly give them the respect they deserve.

Stop being so rude. Oh, and also, keep reading as Snippetz brings you more about those crazy constellations!

Yes, you have clearly been living under a rock if you don’t know what a constellation is. Technically speaking, constellations are asterisms, or groupings of stars that resemble familiar things or patterns, which have been officially recognized by the International Astronomical Union. In all, there are 88 constellations recognized by the IAU.

POPULAR MONTHLY CONSTELLATIONS Since there are so many constellations, as we mentioned above, we’ve chosen a few of the most popular ones from each month. The monthly designation of each constellation is determined by the date at which it crosses “the meridian,” or the point directly above the viewer (rather than slightly to the left or right) at 9:00 p.m.

• ORION – January 25 – easily recognizable by the straight line of three bright stars, known as Orion’s Belt, Orion the Great Hunter was named by Ptolemy and has been spotted in the sky for centuries. The ancient Babylonians referred to it as the Heavenly Shepherd and the Egyptians referred to it as the

god Sah. Legend has it that Orion bragged that he would kill every animal on Earth, which upset the goddess Gaia, who sent a scorpion to kill Orion. The other gods apparently felt sorry for Orion and placed him and his dogs in the sky as constellations on the opposite side of the sky from Scorpius (the scorpion Gaia sent) to keep Orion from being hurt.

GEMINI – February 20 – you probably remember this name from our article about the zodiac signs and rightly so. Gemini is one of the constellations associated with the zodiac because it lies along the same path the sun travels in the sky throughout the year. Also named

by Ptolemy, Gemini represents the twins, Castor and Pollux, who were part of the men who traveled with Jason on the Argo. Allegedly, they weren’t actually twins but half-brothers.

CANCER – March 15 – yet another zodiac sign, the Cancer constellation is a crab that was also named

by Ptolemy. The story behind its existence in the night sky is likely one of two versions. Either the crab was sent to Earth by the goddess Hera to distract Hercules while he fought with the Hydra. But Hercules kicks the crab so hard, it flies into the sky and lands among the stars . . . OR, Hercules crushes the crab under his foot. How it got to the sky after that is unclear.

URSA MAJOR – April 20 – “The Great Bear,” Ursa Major, can be seen in our part of the world throughout the entire year. It also contains the Big Dipper, which

isn’t a constellation itself, which can be confusing. But the Big Dipper is also associated with the Underground Railroad – during the Civil War, slaves hoping to escape to the North to be free were told to follow the “drinking gourd” (i.e. the Big Dipper). The entire constellation has been described in various cultures for about 13,000 years, making it one of the oldest identified constellations.

VIRGO – May 25 – more zodiac signs, anyone? “The Maiden,” Virgo, is the second largest constellation and typically “announces” the harvest since the sun passes through it in about mid-September.

However, historically the constellation’s festival is held in the second week of April, which is when it first appears in the sky each year.

Virgo is often represented as a woman holding two ears of wheat.

URSA MINOR – June 25 – the “Little Bear” is visible in our part of the world all year long and can be easily recognized by the grouping of stars called the “Little Dipper.” Just as with the Big Dipper, the Little Dipper is not a constellation itself but part of a larger one, namely Ursa Minor. At the end of the Little Dipper’s handle is Polaris or the North Star, which is called this because it is most closely situation in the direction of the north celestial pole and was used for navigation. Ida and Adrasteia, sisters who took care of Zeus while he was little and living on Crete and who were rewarded by Zeus by being placed in the heavens, or it represents Zeus and Callisto’s son, Arcas, who was transformed into a bear, along with Callisto and placed in the sky.

SCORPIUS – July 20 – remember Orion’s nemesis? This is him.

Scorpius is located opposite Orion in the night sky, rising in the east only after Orion has set in the west.

The constellation can be identiďŹ ed by its distinct “Jâ€? shape and is also one of the zodiac constellations.

LYRA – August 15 – Lyra represents the lyre, a musical instrument, and legend states that it was a gift invented by Hermes and given to his half-brother, Apollo.

Apollo then gave it to Orpheus, the Argonauts’ musician. Once Orpheus died, the his lyre was tossed into a river, but Zeus sent an eagle to recover it and both the lyre and Orpheus were placed among the stars. It also represents the starting point of the Lyrids meteor shower that happens every April.

DELPHINUS – September 15 – speaking of Lyra, Delphinus the dolphin was placed next to the lyre

AQUARIUS – October 10 – another zodiac constellation, can you believe it?! This one, the water bearer, is located amongst other water-related constellations and appears to be pouring water into the mouth of the Southern Fish constellation, Piscis Austrinus.

Isn’t that so nice of him? In Greek mythology, the man Aquarius (not the constellation Aquarius) taken to Olympus by Zeus to act as a cupbearer for the gods.

ANDROMEDA – November 10 – the “Princess of Ethiopia,� the Andromeda constellations was another of the original ones labeled

by Ptolemy and represents the daughter of Cepheus and Cassiopeia. She was chained to a rock and tossed into the ocean as a sacriďŹ ce for the sea monster Cetus but was rescued by Perseus, who used the decapitated head of Medusa to turn Cetus to stone.

PERSEUS – December 25 – remember Perseus? Well, he’s one of the December constellations and was placed in the heavens along with his wife, Andromeda. Please tell us you remember her! Anyway, this constellation is also the starting point for the Perseid meteor shower that occurs in mid-July.

his past Saturday I was invited to help the Cool Cats Kids Cycling team raise awareness for their program at the Colorado Springs Events Center. The program was sponsored by the Colorado Springs Ladies Roller Derby organization PPDD (Pikes Peak Derby Dames). These gals skate on a flat track. Skating lanes are actually taped off on the gym floor from which these ladies begin their bumping, checking, hard hitting, fast action high scoring game.

All of the KATS kids had front row seats and from the smiles on their little faces they were definitely enjoying themselves. At half-time all the kids were allowed to ride their Specially built bikes out on the course and around the arena. They were met with loud cheering and standing ovations.

They had a great time! And, as prearranged, coach Ashley took the mike and announced that 3 organizations had donated $2700 for the purchase of 2 more Specially built bicycles for this great group of kids: McDonald Paving, Encore Electric and 4kidzsports.

“INFLUENCE”

W

hen I was six-years-old (1949) the only “media” in our house was a radio. When we tuned in “The Shadow” or “The Jack Benny Show,” Dad often complained about “static.”

One day I was bored, so just for fun, I pounded four nails in the back porch wall. Next, I ran a piece of string around the nails and pulled back and forth on either end of the string. It made a vibrating sound that excited me. I ran into the kitchen yelling, “Mommy, I’ve invented static!”

Every human is born with an endless supply of creativity. Remember when you picked a dozen of pretty yellow flowers and gave them to your mother, and even though they were dandelions, she displayed them in a vase right in the middle of the kitchen table? Her smiling words endorsed and honored your creativity.

What keeps us from using our Godgiven creative genius? Rational thinking, perhaps—my grandfather was certain no man would ever go to the moon. Critical words are the most common creative killer—“that’s ugly,” or “what a stupid idea,” or “that will never fly.” Imitation is another creative suppresser—we want to be socially accepted so we hide our distinctiveness, trying to blend in.

But it’s so much more fun to be creative, wouldn’t you agree?

Creative people take the gifts God gave them and play. They experiment, take risks, ask questions, challenge norms, turn over rocks, and look behind the curtains. They ask why and how and what and who. They ponder more, see more, and wonder more than others.

Creative people are courageous; they look for the hidden, consider the improbable, and imagine the unimaginable. That’s how Henry Ford built a car that an average wage-earner could afford. It’s the same way the Sumerians created a written language over 5000 years ago; and a creative genius in China invented the first compass around 2000 BC. Creative people don’t care if they know little about a subject; they yearn to know more. They may even find joy in their mistakes because they’ve learned to expect them, laugh at them, and learn from them. Creative people feel no need to surrender to rationality, repeat the status quo, adopt the latest fads, or agree with popular opinions of the day.

Instead, these right-brained visionaries are self-driven to compose new metaphors of life, to unveil patterns never before discerned, and to combine the unrelated in unique and novel ways – basically, “to give the world something it didn’t know it was missing.” (Paola Antonelli) Great things are accomplished, important scientific leaps occur, and life is made better when the creative mind is released from the prison of normality, tedium, and pessimism.

OK, I admit it: I didn’t invent static. But I did experience the thrill of discovering something new by playing around – being creative -- with whatever was within my reach. It makes me feel good, so I’ve been doing it ever since!

That feel-good sensation is common because creativity is embedded in our DNA. We’re made “in the image of God” – Creator of the universe. We’re designed to be creative; and as poet Maya Angelou said, “You can’t use up creativity; the more you use, the more you have.”

Internet scams have been around nearly as long as the internet itself, and many of them have roots in scams that existed well before the internet but have been adapted to the new medium. According to Paul Gil of Livewire, scams have become more advanced, more deceptive, and more common, and even venerable scams from the early days still snag people.

Unfortunately, malware protection software doesn't help much with many of these types of scams, because they rely on tricking the user, not delivering malicious software. So, being aware of the common scams can help you avoid them. Email programs have improved by adding ways of recognizing bogus emails and flagging them before they get to you, but they're not perfect. The best way to avoid falling prey to a scam is to know what they look like. Here are some of the more common ones you may encounter:

Phishing Emails and Fake Web Pages This is the most widespread internet and email scam today. A "phishing" email lures you into divulging your login credentials — your username and password — through convincing emails and links to web pages. These phishing emails and fake websites that resemble legitimate credit authorities like Citibank, eBay, or PayPal. The emails frighten or entice you into clicking on a link that delivers you to the phony web page, where you can enter your ID and password.

A common ruse is an urgent need to "confirm your identity."

The message will even offer you a story of how your account has been attacked by hackers to trick you into divulging your confidential information.

The Nigerian Scam AKA "4-1-9" Most of you have received an email from a member of a Nigerian family with wealth. It is a desperate cry for help in getting a very large sum of money

out of the country. A common variation is a woman in Africa who claimed that her husband had died and that she wanted to leave millions of dollars of his estate to a good church. They will use your emotions and willingness to help against you. They will promise you a large cut of their business or family fortune.

All you are asked to do is cover the endless “legal” and other “fees” that must be paid to the people that can release the fictional fortune.

Lottery Scams Most of us dream of hitting it big in a lottery, quitting our jobs, and retiring while still young enough to enjoy the finer things in life.

This scam will usually come in the form of a conventional email message. It informs you that you have won millions of dollars, and it flatters you with congratulations Advanced Fees for Guaranteed Loan or Credit Card If you are thinking about applying for a “pre-approved” loan or a credit card that charges an upfront fee, ask yourself: “Why would a bank do that?” These scams are obvious to people who take the time to scrutinize the offer.
