“Of all the means I know to lead men, the most effectual is mystery.” – Adam Weishaupt, German philosopher and founder of the Illuminati
C
onsidering Mr. Weishaupt founded one of the most mysterious “clubs” ever to grace the face of this fair Earth, we have to think that he knows what he’s talking about. Mystery is a great way to keep people intrigued, involved, interested! Maybe Weishaupt meant “to lead” in the sense that he led his followers, but we tend to think there’s a second meaning here: “to lead” can also be something (rather than someone) that people go after, like the idea that they can solve a mystery. Does any of that make sense or are we being too mysterious? Here’s the deal: there are so many unsolved mysteries out there, not just

BYE-BYE BLACKBIRD?? Before we go any further, we feel it’s necessary to make something superlyduperly clear: we cannot possibly address all the unsolved mysteries out there, so we picked a few that we thought were especially interesting. Don’t agree with us? That’s fine. You’re entitled to your opinion, even if it’s wrong.

OK, back to this first mystery. Allow us to set the stage. Date: December 31, 2010. Place: Beebe, Arkansas. People all over the town are celebrating the comGeorge Wilkins - Publisher/CEO ing of the New Year, drinking and shoutOffice: 719-487-0484 ing and yes, even shooting off fireworks. Email: george@fepublications.com Not unlike what we in Colorado do with www.SnippetzMagazine.com our awesome fireworks from Pikes Peak. The difference? About 5,000 blackbirds lost their marbles SUDOKU & CROSSWORD SOLUTIONS ON PAGE 7 that day and flew straight into telephone poles, trees, buildings and what have you, basically committing mass suicide. As if that wasn’t weird enough, the same thing happened the very next year, on New Year’s Eve again! This time, only about 200 birds went crazy and killed themselves. But even 200 birds falling from the sky would probably have been disconcerting to say the least . . . and it remains an unsolved mystery all these years later.
passengers boarded the plane; that is until D.B.Cooper climbed aboard and hijacked the plane with briefcase he said had a bomb inside it. He demanded a ransom, which he received when the plane landed in Seattle after letting all the 36 other passengers to deplane. Cooper then demanded the pilots take off again and fly to Mexico, where he apparently planned to jump out. He instructed the pilots to stay low to the ground and fly slowly. At some point in time, Cooper jumped, although no one knows for sure if he survived the fall. People have speculated for decades, with some claiming he must have died, since he has never been seen again. Others think he successfully parachuted from the plane and made off with the cash. We may never know for sure.
THAT’S QUITE A “FEET” Picture this: you’re walking along the beach near Vancouver, British Columbia, enjoying the peaceful sound of the ocean waves and the fresh, salty air. Suddenly, that beautiful scene is broken by a strange sight: a foot, wearing an Adidas shoe, hanging out on the beach with the other bits of washed up debris. Weird, right? But what’s weirder still is that this was not the only disembodied foot to wash ashore in the area. A week later, another one appeared but this time it was wearing a Reebok shoe. The story still doesn’t end there. Since that August day in 2007 when the first foot was discovered, 13 others have washed ashore, all cut from the bodies

from which they originally belonged. Why in the world are random feet washing ashore in Canada? That’s the unsolved mystery part of this story. Maybe one day we’ll know the truth.
SPEAKING OF FEET . . . Remember the foot thing we just told you about? Well, we’ve got another unsolved mystery involving feet but this time it’s really big feet. Yes, we mean Bigfoot. Or Sasquatch if you feel like being fancy. Rumors of the existence of a big hairy monkey-man thing wandering through the forests of the Pacific Northwest have circulated for decades. Grainy film claiming to have caught him on camera is about the best “evidence” we have that Bigfoot exists. But here’s some food for thought: can we ever be really sure that there’s no such thing as Bigfoot? We have yet to discover all the lifeforms that share this nifty planet, so who’s to say Bigfoot isn’t one of them? Maybe he’s just really good at Hide-and-Seek. Like, really good. It’s a mystery!
HMMMMM . . . Perhaps that should say “hummmmm” because that’s what this next unsolved mystery is all about. A hum that apparently is plaguing Taos, New Mexico and has been since the early 1990s. Can you even imagine living in a place that was constantly humming? Hearing othUnsolved Mysteries... Continued on Page 3

er people eat is bad enough but having a humming sound in the background at all times, day and night, would certainly get a bit annoying. The residents got so frustrated (and were probably running on very little sleep), they complained to the U.S. Congress in 1993, demanding the source of the hum be found and explained if not completely eradicated. Unfortunately, after multiple studies were conducted, nothing ever came from them. Our recommendation? Move away. There’s only so much humming any one human being can be expected to endure.
STAY AWAY FROM THIS NASTY SHAPE When you were learning your shapes in preschool, we bet your teachers didn’t warn you about how dangerous triangles can be. Well, maybe not all triangles. Just one in particular: the Bermuda Triangle. This three-sided death trap is located in the Atlantic Ocean, near Bermuda (duh), Miami, Florida and Puerto Rico. The term “Bermuda Triangleâ€? was coined by a man named Vincent Gaddis in 1964 and apparently describes a place where ships and airplanes have quite literally disappeared for more than half a century. What happened to those vessels? Why can’t we ďŹ nd them? Naturally, theories abound but nothing has been concretely posited that truly solves this mystery.
ANCIENT PRANKSTERS? If you ever get the chance to y to Peru, speciďŹ cally the area northwest of the city of Nazca, take a peek out the airplane’s windows. Perhaps you’ll see one of many ďŹ gures literally carved into the landscape below. And we’re not talking little pictures etched into a ďŹ eld. We’re talking a 150-foot long spider, a 935foot pelican and a 360-foot monkey, just to name a few. Scientists have dated the origins of the “Nazca Linesâ€? as they’re called all the way back to between 200 B.C. and A.D. 600. But why were these massive pictures, that can clearly only be seen from above, carved during a time when humans obviously hadn’t ďŹ gured out how to y?

Wanna know our theory? We think perhaps there were some bored Nazca people who decided to make these incredible carvings with the intent that someday, somehow, people would be able to see them from above. But they knew the existence of this pictures would really confuse future explorers, who might actually think they were either done to communicate with aliens or to even signal them. So, they’re carving these things, all the while laughing at because they know how innocuous their artwork really is, but also know how freaked out the rest of us would be when we discovered them some 2,000 years later.

No? That’s not the solution? Well, ďŹ ne. We guess that’s going to remain an unsolved mystery . . . for now. • If you’re right-handed, studies show that you tend to wash your left hand more thoroughly than your right hand. Reverse that if you’re a leftie.
• It was American poet and playwright Edna St. Vincent Millay -- the ďŹ rst woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for poetry, by the way -- who made the following sage observation: “A person who publishes a book appears willfully in public with his pants down.â€? • It’s often been said that necessity is the mother of invention -- and for good reason. Here’s an example: The idea for the original pull-top can originated when the inventor was at a picnic; he had forgotten to bring a can opener, so he had to use a car bumper. • If you live in Georgia, you need to watch that wagging tongue: In that state it’s illegal to spread a false rumor. • According to cetologists, an adult right whale requires 400,000 calories a day to survive. These scientists who specialize in whales also note that the mainstay of these mammals’ diet is a ea-sized crustacean called a copepod.
• A study of 28 women found that screaming has a therapeutic eect on the physiology of the body. After bouts of screaming, the test subjects showed slower heart rates, lower blood pressure and lower body temperature. • Those who study such things -- and who, evidently, have way too much time on their hands -- claim that there are 108 stitches in a baseball. • If you take into account all the sales in the world, there are approximately 50 Bibles sold every minute. *** Thought for the Day: “For disappearing acts, it’s hard to beat what happens to the eight hours supposedly left after eight of sleep and eight of work.â€? -- Doug Larson

the various steps in creating kilnworked glass and even create your own! This year you can meet the alpacas that provide the fiber for Barbara Ziek’s home décor and art clothing. Mediums of creative expression include oil and acrylic painting, wood turning, metalsmithing, handmade paper and mobiles, sculptures in bronze, iron, and steel, ceramics, watercolors, batik, kilnworked glass, jewelry design and fabrication, photography , and fiber arts. You will see how each artist and craftsman has transformed his or her working space with tools, music, books, and specialized materials into their own unique sanctuary, where they find creativity and inspiration. At some locations you will even have an opportunity to create your own work of art! There will be demonstrations of technique or tools and guests can enter drawings for gift certificates to local restaurants and for original works of art by some of the artists! This is not a traditional studio tour where you drive from location to location just to see multiple artists and finished product! You will have the opportunity to purchase first rate art and craft at special prices, but you will also gain the unique experience of watching how and where your collectable was made! RUGBY TOWN 7s - 2019 By Michael Sherman (4kidzsports)
E
very August, RugbyTown Sevens showcases 20 top international and domestic teams in a world-class rugby tournament from Infinity Park in Glendale, Colorado. The entire City of Glendale celebrates the weekend with plenty of entertainment, a beerfest, and a festival atmosphere. Each year I have the opportunity to enjoy 7-Man Rugby at its best, a very fast game made up of exceptional athletes from all over the World. In attendance were teams from each branch of the Military, and a stacked lineup of pro and semi-pro teams from the UK, Ireland, and Fiji Islands. In the military division Army once again dominated the field. They were big, fast, strong and well disciplined. Sevens rugby is a variation on 15–a–side rugby union play, which stepped boldly onto the international scene with its return to Olympic play in the 2016 Rio Olympics – matches are seven–on–seven played in two seven–minute halves. The game demands speed, strength, and stamina. This abbreviated gameplay allows an entire tournament to take place over the course of one action–packed weekend. On Day 2 of Rugby Town 7s, Army flew into the Quarter Cup Finals after defeating Air Force in the Military Championship game, 33-5, to take Military honors. There next match would be against the Fiji Marlboroughs at 6:35 MDT Saturday evening. Wanting to see just how Army would stack up against one of their overseas adversaries, I waited and I was not disappointed. What I witnessed was something that only happens in the Rugby. Unless you are a “Rugger” and familiar
with the rules, few know that when the buzzer blows the team that has the ball can keep playing until they either score or give it up. With approximately 1 minutes left to play and down 15-12 the Marlborough’s took possession and proceeded to pass this lopsided football underhand, up and down the line for over 3 minutes. I was amazed by their candor, their nonchalance, their discipline and patience. They were deliberately wearing the much bigger Army unit down. They were looking for a hole, an Army player who may be sluggish, or not prepared for a burst of speed through the line. Then, without a hint of anticipation, one of the Marlborough’s faked a pass behind him – like they’d been doing the the past 3 minutes, but this time he kept the ball and burst past the unprepared Army defender to scamper upfield for a 5 point score. No one could catch him once past the line. The crowd was stunned! Army had just lost 17-15. But how could this be? They were winning at the sound of the buzzer! Like a hurricane hit the field, you could feel the air sucked from lungs. Most were in shock. “Might Casey Struck Out”. This was the most exciting Rugby match I had ever seen. Now I knew why Rugby is so popular with the “Rugger” crowd. This is the kind of game they wait for. This was the finish that separates Rugby from the “rest of the crowd”. What a match! I was certainly glad I waited the extra two hours just to see this game.

If you want to introduce your kids to a great game, where they can have “tons of fun” without worrying about getting hurt, look for one of the local youth flag rugby associations. They will have a ball, and because there is little equipment, the cost is very affordable. And, take your kids to a professional match at Infinity Park. You can follow them at Raptor’s Rugby – Glendale, CO. Enjoy!

ARE CANADIAN DRUGS IN OUR FUTURE?
I
f you watch the news, you might have seen there’s a proposal underway that would allow states to import prescription drugs from Canada, where costs are lower. Drugs are cheaper in other countries because their governments control the prices. As it now stands, we can go across the border and bring back a three-month supply of our medications for personal use, but there are pitfalls. Technically it’s illegal, but it’s often overlooked at the border. Going to Canada for your drugs can be inconvenient, and travel costs can eat into the savings gained by buying lower-cost prescriptions. If you try to buy by mail, you don’t really know who’s on the other end -- the drugs could be counterfeit and actually from a different country. Then there’s the cost of shipping and the exchange rate. Here are some things to keep in mind while this proposal is being hashed out:

• Canadians aren’t too happy about it, because they already have shortages. • The U.S. Food and Drug Administration isn’t happy about it, because the FDA thinks it’s protecting us from bad drugs. • The drug companies in the U.S. definitely aren’t happy about it. The drug industry can do what it likes, including passing along the costs of research and development to us, the consumer. Medicare, for example, isn’t allowed to negotiate for lower prices.

Offer to Pay More Than the Asking Price on Items for Sale This one involves an item you might have listed for sale such as a car, truck, or some other expensive item. The scammer finds your ad and sends you an email offering to pay much more than your asking price. The reason for overpayment is supposedly related to the international fees to ship the car overseas. In return, you are to send him the car and the cash for the difference. The money order you receive looks real so you deposit it into your account. In a couple of days or the time it takes to clear, your bank informs you the money order was fake and demands you pay that amount back immediately.

become a "financial representative" of an overseas company you have never even heard of before. The reason they want to hire you is that this company has problems accepting money from US customers and they need you to handle those payments. You will be paid a percentage commission per transaction. This is used to steal your identity. Also, you will owe money to your bank because the checks or money orders were fake. Disaster Relief Scams In times of national disasters such as 911, hurricanes, floods and tornados, good people pull together to help the survivors, including through online donations. Enter the scammer, who sets up fake charity websites to steal money donated to the victims of disasters. If your request for the donation came via email, there is a chance it is a phishing attempt. Do not click on any links in the email or provide any bank account or credit card information.

If your drugs are expensive, talk to your doctor. There might be a suitable generic. Price shop at various pharmacies. Call the manufacturer and ask if it has coupons or a program with reduced costs. Ask your pharmacist for the lowest possible discounted price. If you’re on Medicare Part D, be sure you’re using a preferred pharmacy. Look online at www.goodrx.com for low cost drugs near you. Meanwhile, keep an eye on the news.
Travel Scams These scams are most active during the summer months. You receive an email with the offer to get amazingly low fares to some exotic destination, but you must book it today or the offer expires that evening. If you call, you’ll find out the travel is free but the hotel rates are highly overpriced. “Make Money Fast” Chain Emails A classic pyramid scheme: You receive an email with a list of names and are asked to send 5 dollars (or so) by mail to the person whose name is at the top of the list, add your own name to the bottom, and forward the updated list to a number of other people.
