t can take two years from the time a host city solicits design proposals for Olympic Game medals to when the athletes are draped with these special awards. What goes into these beauties? Well, it’s a combination of solid silver, at least six grams of gold and a lot of tradition.
WHAT’S IN AN OLYMPIC MEDAL The International Olympic Commit (IOC) sets the technical requirements for the design of the Olympic medals; however, the host city has much leeway to design a medal that reflects their culture. As mandated by the IOC, each Olympic medal must be at least 70mm wide (about two inches) and 6mm thick. Gold and silver medals are to be made of at least 92.5% silver as well as a minimum of six grams of gold. Bronze medals conFor the Gold... Continued on Page 2

The organizing committee of the Beijing Games (BOCOG) received 265 design entries from their global search and selected a design that embodies the Chinese values and culture. Each medal is 6mm thick and 70mm in diameter. The obverse side of the medal features the standard design dictated by the IOC that features the winged goddess of victory Nike and the Panathinaikos Arena. It is the reverse side that highlights the “bi,” which is an ancient jade piece in the form of a disc with a hole in the center. It is inscribed with a double dragon pattern. AARP’s Policy and Research branch recently conducted a study to determine what percentage of Medicaid money the states are spending on long-term at-home care. Only those four states spent more than 50 percent of their longterm care money to keep people in their homes in comfortable surroundings. (Change that to 40 percent and you can add three more states: California, Minnesota and Texas.)

The rest of the states are spending the bulk of their dollars on institutionalized care. Not only does it cost more, but surveys show that 87 percent of seniors age 50 and older want to be at home. By comparison, for those with developmental disabilities or mental retardation, the majority do receive

It makes no sense: If it costs less to keep a senior at home, supported by home and community services, than it does to institutionalize, why don’t they spend fewer dollars to keep the senior in comfortable surroundings at home?
f you want to stay at home if you become ill or disabled, you might have to move to New Mexico, Oregon, Washington or Alaska. That is, if you want Medicaid to pay for your care.

Fact: For every person in a nursing home, three people can be supported with at-home care. Fact: Between 2001 and 2006, 27 states added more nursing-home money than at-home-care money. There are obstacles, certainly, anytime you’re dealing with government rules, especially when it comes to policy about how states are to balance and divide up their Medicaid dollars. But as the AARP report says, it takes a “creative problem-solving attitude that can find innovative ways to work within existing laws.” If those states can do it, so can the rest. CHOOSING THE RIGHT WINDOW COVERINGS FOR YOUR KITCHEN AND BATHROOM
K
itchen window coverings should be a great focal point in the décor of your kitchen. The design of the treatments should blend into your cupboards, the flooring and the lighting. Choosing the right texture and colors, and having the right theme are crucial to the overall appeal of the kitchen.

are trying to achieve. Just changing the window treatment can give you a unique design. How about a classic bathroom with soothing window treatment fabrics, and maybe some bright brass decorative drapery hardware. Indulge in the sleek fixtures with bright porcelain sinks and tubs that just gleam. Using a backdrop of muted floor and wall coverings, with perhaps a delicate framed mirror, and having the right shower curtain can greatly finish off your bathroom.
The window should allow as much natural light in as possible so that all the highlights of the natural wood can show its beauty and allow all the warmth of the surfaces out.

Take note before deciding on your window treatments. Take a sample of fabric and hold it up against the light and judge how much privacy it may give you. An example, gauze fabric, although pretty, at night with the light on may be too sheer for comfort. Blinds or shades should overlap your window so that light is blocked from entering around the sides. Using thick fabrics or maybe layered window treatments can help cut down on drafts, which could be uncomfortable while you are soaking in the tub. You should avoid wood blinds or loosely woven fabrics for your window treatments. These styles react to excessive moisture. As an alternative, maybe looking at easy-care coverings such as verticals, mini-blinds, pleated shades, porcelain blinds, and even roller shades. To get more ideas read thru some window decorating magazines, they will have pictures and descriptions for more window treatment ideas.
CHOOSING THE RIGHT KITCHEN WINDOW COVERINGS Most commonly the kitchen window is situated near or around the sink. Which means the chances of splashes from the area is great. So consider the window treatment that is most practical. Any fabrics that you may use should be machine washable. If you choose blinds or shades, make sure they are washable with soap and water. As with real wood, having high moisture around that area can lead to cracking and warping of the blinds. Composite material has been designed to look like real wood and should be a consideration instead of the real wood. With the right research and information gathered you will be able to design your own custom coverings that suit your needs

Not only does she squat to urinate, she will lift her leg. I’ve never seen a female do that before. Also, as many times as she urinates outside, she ends up going inside during the night. Do you have any idea why she might do that? -- Loretta, via e-mail
This would constitute a respectable amount of damage and would make her a liar besides. I wanted to believe it was true.
here was a time when country singers took a little more But recently I heard another Underpride in themselves. wood song, “Last Name.”
If they sang about getting drunk, gambling away the rent money, cheating on their spouses, starting a brawl, getting tossed in jail, etc., you could be reasonably sure they spoke from experience, that they had, in fact, achieved these goals.
Like the earlier song, it told quite a tale, this one about how Miss Underwood had met a guy at a bar and one thing led to another, and she woke up the next morning in Vegas with a wedding ring on her finger.
A: I’m not sure why Terry both squats and lifts her leg to pee, but I have seen females do this before. So, let’s chalk it up to preference for now. The indoor, overnight urination and frequent urination during the daytime does concern me. You should take Terry to the veterinarian to rule out a urinary-tract infection or other physical problem such as kidney disease. Try to note any other out-of-the-or-
The title, “Last Name,” referred to the fact she didn’t even know his last name and hence her new married name. There’s a lot of “What have I done?” and “My momma would be so ashamed” in there, and Underwood seems to sing with the anguished sincerity of a country singer who’s screwed up her life again.
Last year Carrie Underwood released a song, “Before He Cheats,” that fit nicely into this tradition: “... And he don’t know ... “That I dug my key into the side of his pretty little souped-up fourwheel drive, “Carved my name into his leather seats ... “I took a Louisville slugger to both headlights, But I don’t believe it, and here’s “Slashed a hole in all four tires.” why. Wow! (And nice touch with the Louisville slugger.) Delivered with real venom, the song seemed to confirm Miss Underwood’s reputation as a country singer in good standing.
dinary actions for the vet: Does she drink a lot of water? Has she lost weight? Does her coat look dull or patchy? Does she appear distressed when urinating? If Terry’s health checks out, the next step is modifying her schedule and habits a bit. Small dogs have small bladders, so add a couple of extra trips outside daily -- just before you go to bed late at night, and the absolute first thing in the morning. To discourage peeing, she should sleep in an enclosed space -- a room or gatedoff area -- with her doggie bed, toys and water. Also reduce the amount of water in her bowl overnight -- about a cup should do. If the nighttime urination isn’t resolved, add a pee pad to the enclosed sleep area and train Terry to use it. But continue to adhere to her walk schedule. As Terry becomes accustomed to the schedule, she should become less prone to go at night. ARE YOU “GREEN” YET? CREATE AN ECO-FRIENDLY HOME! ECO-FRIENDLY INTERIOR DECORATING
Designed for Health!
H
ere are some ideas which will Save You Money and Help Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions:
Eco-friendly homes are smartly designed for health as well as beauty by choosing building products and home furnishings made from materials that sustain nature and honor the planet. The materials we use, how they are produced, and what is done with the waste all have an impact to our environment. “Green” homes are indistinguishable from traditionally built homes but save energy and money by using less natural resources and fewer toxic chemicals. Using energy efficient appliances and water conserving fixtures like low volume toilets reduce water consumption, and water purification systems save the purchase of water. These homes also maximize the winter’s sun exposure and minimize summer heat with the use of solar panels and skylights saving energy. New methods of insulating the home improve heating efficiency. A major cause of indoor air pollution is caused by volatile organic compounds. (VOC’s) VOC’s can be present in paints, stains and glues that get released into the air. This can cause headaches, nausea and exacerbate asthma and allergies. Using an air purifier reduces the chemicals floating around and improves the air quality in your home. But even better are houseplants which take in CO2 and releases clean, pure oxygen, adding welcome humidity to the air we breathe, filtering dust particles and absorbing certain air toxins. Working with sustainable and reclaimed products, such as wool carpeting, bamboo flooring, and cotton insulation, and by using paints and stains with low VOC’s, will make a difference. Refurbishing older furniture is another way to maintain a healthy interior environment. Older furniture was usually made better and harmful chemicals were not used until the 50’s & 60’s. Reclaimed or sustainable wood in some nontoxic finishes with natural fabrics on the upholstery support the creation of ecofriendly homes. Becoming more aware and making wise choices for innovative solutions in building materials and home furnishings will make for healthy and beautifully designed spaces.

Furniture can be made from FSC certified wood, which is formaldehyde free, and the inside of the furniture can be made from a product that is made from recycled plastic bottles. Sustainable furniture also has the added benefit of being made with nontoxic glues, paints and finishing treatments that won’t pollute indoor or outdoor air.

MOMENTS IN TIME THE HISTORY CHANNEL
• On Aug. 22, 1749, a troupe of English actors performs “Cato,” by Joseph Addison, in a warehouse in Philadelphia. The locals considered acting to be immoral, and the city council ran the troupe out of town. The troupe fled to New York, a more theater-friendly town. • On Aug. 24, 1814, during the War of 1812, President James Madison is present at the Battle of Bladensburg and takes command of one of the few remaining American artillery batteries, thus becoming the only president to exercise his authority as commander in chief in actual battle. • On Aug. 19, 1909, the first automobile race is held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The track’s surface of crushed rock and tar proved dangerous and was soon replaced with 3.2 million paving bricks, laid in a bed of sand and fixed with mortar. Dubbed “The Brickyard,” the speedway reopened in December 1909. • On Aug. 20, 1921, author Jacqueline Susann is born.

But 50,000 people had already fallen victim to it. The practice would be revived in occupied Poland. • On Aug. 21, 1959, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signs a proclamation admitting Hawaii into the Union as the 50th state. The president also issued an order for an American flag featuring 50 stars. The new flag became official on July 4, 1960. • On Aug. 23, 1999, seven people in New York die from what turns out to be the first cases of West Nile virus in the United States. • Depending on your occupation, you may or may not be surprised by the following tidbit of information: According to a recent study, 33 percent of people who use BlackBerry wireless handheld devices show signs of addiction that are similar to those shown by alcoholics. • It was philosopher, poet and novelist George Santayana who made the following sage observation: “To knock a thing down, especially if it is cocked at an arrogant angle, is a deep delight of the blood.” • In the Central Asian country of Mongolia, there are 15 livestock animals for every human inhabitant. • If you’re intimidated by the ins and outs of the computer world, here’s a sobering thought: Moore’s Law states that computer technology tends to double in complexity every 18-24 months.

Salome’s Stars
Enter Father Joe (Billy Connelly), a pedophilic priest (ooo, that’s original) who bleeds black oil from his eyes and supposedly has psychic visions about a missing FBI agent.
Week of August 18, 2008
The FBI decides that because of the supernatual nature of Father Joe’s “gift,” it would be best to bring Mulder in on the case to aid the investigating agents.
THE X-FILES: I WANT TO BELIEVE
Y
’know, what with the zombie-slow pacing, everyone speaking their lines as if they were on Thorazine (or whispering), the new X-Files movie should’ve been titled, “The X-Files: Wake Me When It’s Over.” Man, what a profoundly boring, dull and unimaginative movie this was. You’d think that with six years to come up with a script, director Chris Carter would’ve chosen something more meaty and interesting. The film takes place six years after the TV series ended. Mulder and Scully (David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson) are living in the woods somewhere far from the prying eyes of the FBI. Scully has taken a job as a doctor at a Catholic hospital. Mulder has grown a beard with more charisma and screen presence
ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Impatience with those who don’t keep up with you can cause resistance, which, in turn, can lead to more delays. Best to be helpful and supportive if you want results.
The FBI agents assigned to the case are Dakota Whitney (Amanda Peet) and Mosley Drummy, played by Alvin “Xzbit” Joiner, who at no point in the film offers to pimp anyone’s ride -- probably the biggest letdown of the film, except for the ending. And the middle. And the beginning.
TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A surprise announcement from a colleague could put you on the defensive. Gather your facts and respond. You’ll soon find the situation shifting in your favor. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Time spent away from a project pays off with a new awareness of options you hadn’t considered before. Weigh them carefully before deciding which to choose.
“The X-Files: I Want To Believe” doesn’t really go anywhere. If it had been an episode of the series, the reaction would be “Meh. Maybe next week’ll be better.” But with six years to work on a script and a big budget, we fans of the show deserve more than a mediocre, boring, throwaway extended episode.
CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Consider confronting that personal conflict while there’s still time to work things out. A delay can cause more problems. A longtime colleague might offer to mediate. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Some emerging matters could impede the Lion’s progress in completing an important project. Best advice: Deal with them now, before they can create costly delays.
Don’t watch it. Not in the theater or when it comes out on DVD, which could very well be next Tuesday, if the box-office numbers are any indication.
VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Your aspect continues to favor an expanding vista. This could be a good time to make a career move, and taking an out-of-town job could be a good way to do it.

• Giraffes are native to Africa, not North America, and the difference in climate can cause problems for these warmweather animals living in zoos in chillier climates. The Oakland Zoo, located just outside San Francisco, has come up with a novel idea to help combat the cold. Since (for obvious reasons) strapping a blanket on a giraffe would be rather ineffectual, it had a tailor create a custom-fitted winter coat for Tiki, one of the tallest residents. • The airline industry isn’t in great shape these days, due at least partly to the high cost of fuel. In an attempt to cut fuel costs, an airline in China is asking its passengers to use the restroom at the airport before boarding the plane. It seems that every flush at altitude uses enough fuel to run a car for 6 miles. *** Thought for the Day: “Computers are incredibly fast, accurate and stupid. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Disruptive family disputes need to be settled so that everyone can move on. Avoid assuming this burden alone, though. Ask for -- no, demand -- help with this problem. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Patience is called for as you await word on an important workplace situation. A personal circumstance, however, could benefit by your taking immediate action. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Don’t lose confidence in yourself. Those doubters are likely to back off if you demand they show solid proof why they think your ideas won’t work. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A temporary setback might cause the usually sure-footed Goat some unsettling moments. But keep going. The path ahead gets easier as you move forward. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) There’s welcome news from the workplace. There also could be good news involving a relationship that has long held a special meaning for you. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You might still need to cut some lingering ties to a situation that no longer has the appeal it once held. In the meantime, you can start to explore other opportunities.

HEALTH AND WELLNESS FROM START TO FITNESS
ments is not the best way to learn an exercise. Talk with a fitness professional about the proper way to place your body, head, neck and arms. An alternative to the crunch is the dead-bug exercise: Lay on your back with both your arms and legs toward the ceiling and together bring one leg down toward the ground while your opposite arm also moves back toward the ground, then raise the arm and leg until they meet together back at the top. Start by bringing your arm and leg slowly down and only as far as your back can stay on the floor. After completing this exercise with one leg and one arm, switch sides. This exercise should alleviate any strain to your neck, since your head never leaves the floor. Another exercise is the plank, which is often done in classes such as yoga. Start by lying on your stomach with your elbows on the floor under your shoulders. Keeping your back straight, abdominals tightened and elbows on the ground, lift your body to your knees while trying to keep your back as straight as possible and your head aligned with your back. Once you are to your knees and feel you can maintain that position, extend both legs completely and support yourself by your toes and elbows. Your challenge is to keep your abdominals tightened, back straight and avoid placing too much pressure on your shoulders. Hold this position for 10 seconds at a time until you are able to hold it for extended periods, then carefully lower yourself back to the floor. This exercise should not strain your neck, and it can be a great new goal to see how long you can hold the plank position. These are just two of many great exercises that can be added to your abdominal exercise routine, and when executed correctly can make you stronger overall and pain-free.

CRUNCHES ARE PAIN IN THE NECK Q: Most of my workout routine is great, but I have a big problem when it comes working my abdominals. Crunches on the floor hurt my neck, and I am only able to do 10 or so before my neck and head begin to give me pain. How can I work my abdominals without causing pain and injury to my neck? A: The abdominal region is by far the most popular area of the body for exercisers to want to see change. With hundreds of machines and exercises to work the abdominal area, I am confident you will find a routine that can give you the results you want without causing you pain. First things first. If you have an injury or medical condition that could be the source of your problem, talk with your physician. Back or neck fusions, previous head or neck injuries, and even certain medications that could cause problems should be ruled out first. Once clear, then you’ll know it’s safe to move on. With so many different types of exercises available, it is important to remember to start at the most basic level and move forward slowly. Remember that our abdominal and core region consists of more than the muscles that would show a six pack. They include our back, sides and entire trunk. Neck pain can be caused by improper technique, muscle weaknesses and trying an exercise that is more advanced than your body can support. Crunches are popular, but be sure to learn the correct way to move and position your body. Watching another exerciser and copying his or her move-

BUSINESS AND FINANCE IT’S THE LAW! by Christopher C. Meyer, Attorney at Law, P.C.
THE MARRIAGE ZONE: THE SWORN FINANCIAL STATEMENT © Christopher C. Meyer, July, 2008
I
n last weeks article I described the mandatory financial disclosure requirements in domestic relations cases. The most basic mandatory financial disclosure requirement is the obligation of both parties to exchange and file sworn financial statements. This requirement applies to all initial and post decree domestic relations cases that involve financial matters, such as child support, maintenance (alimony), and property division. The sworn financial statement is a seven-page form. You will enter your income, expense, asset, and debt information in the spaces provided. The sworn financial statement provides each party and the Court with the basic information that is needed to determine the party’s financial status. This form is an extremely useful document. It is the prime source for quick reference as to what the parties can afford on a monthly basis and their net worth. The sworn financial statement is intended to be an accurate snapshot of each party’s financial status as of the date that the party signs the document. Your signature must be notarized. The sworn financial statement requires a comprehensive listing of the parties’ monthly expenses.
It shows the monthly budget for the parties. The income and expense information from the sworn financial statement will be used to determine child support and maintenance (alimony). After the form is completed, it is not unusual for parties to discover that their expenses exceed their incomes. The sworn financial statement can also be used as a tool for projecting future budgetary needs. Most people’s financial situations change significantly after they are divorced. They will have less money to live on. You can use the sworn financial statement to project what your future budget will look like. You can use the form to project your future financial needs even if you are not involved in a court case.

You can download a copy of the sworn financial statement for no cost from the Colorado Courts website (www.courts.state.co.us.). You will not enjoy filling out this form. However, it is an extremely useful exercise because it makes you come to terms with your financial realities. It is also one of the best tools available for projecting your future financial status. Instead of worrying about your financial future, do something about it! Download the sworn financial statement, fill it out, and see what your future looks like. REMODEL WHILE YOU WAIT OUT THE MARKET
M
any home sellers are finding this a grim market for sales. Houses sit ... and sit ... with For Sale signs in the yard. Knowing that the market will eventually come back, many families are instead deciding to dig in for the duration -- opting to make changes to their existing home rather than try to sell in a bad market. Remodeling your home can do two things: It can give you more of the things you want in a house right now, and it can position you well for an eventual sale when the market comes back. With remodeling, however, the trick is to avoid making expensive mistakes. If you’ll need a contractor, get one signed up for late September or October, and negotiate a discount. The later in the year you can schedule the work, the better, as most remodeling companies count on warm months to do the bulk of their year’s work. Knowing they’ll have off-season work, they’re more likely to agree to

Please visit our comprehensive website for divorce information: www.cmeyerlaw.com discounts. (Of course this might not work if you live in snow country and need a roof.) Consult with real-estate agents so you don’t spend too much in the wrong areas and not get a good return on your money when you eventually sell. Kitchens and bathrooms are the biggest selling points for buyers, but even there you can go wrong if you pick update items that turn out to be only a fad, like concrete countertops in the kitchen. Consider how serious the disruption will be to your household, and how long it will go on. How long can you realistically survive without a kitchen? Or a bathroom? (There’s something to be said for offering a bonus to a contractor who finishes on time.) Will your property taxes and insurance go up? Find out, and add those numbers into your future expenses calculations, as well as the cost of any construction loan you take out. Above all, consider whether it is smarter to merely fix up your home instead of doing a major remodeling. An addition that includes a master suite with bathroom won’t be as much of a selling point later if the exterior siding is damaged or the kitchen cabinets are falling off the hinges.
