More than 15 years ago, South Texas Health System saw a need in the community for a facility that provided specialized pediatric care. That vision soon became a reality when Edinburg Children’s Hospital opened its doors in March 2006, becoming the first freestanding children’s facility of its kind south of San Antonio, with the region’s only dedicated pediatric emergency room. To date, the facility, renamed South Texas Health System Children’s in 2020, remains the only freestanding pediatric facility of its kind and the only dedicated children’s emergency room in the Rio Grande Valley. South Texas Health System Children’s, a 107-bed facility, is staffed by nurses, therapists and clinicians who are specially trained for pediatric patients, offering them and their families the opportunity to get the care they need without having to leave the Valley.
