NON-PROFIT SPOT LIGHT
Children growing up in disenfranchised communities lack access to resources and opportunities and attend schools that are not equipped to meet all of their needs. While much progress has been made in educational outcomes in the Rio Grande Valley, students are still less likely to attain a post-secondary degree or credential compared to their peers across the state or county. Teach For America (TFA) recruits outstanding and diverse leaders to become “corps members.” Corps members commit to teaching for two years in a low-income community, where they’re employed by local schools and confront the challenges and joys of expanding opportunities for kids. After two years, they become part of the TFA alumni network. Informed and inspired by their students, many continue teaching; others pursue other leadership roles in schools and school systems or launch careers in other fields that shape educational access and opportunity.

Since 1991, Teach For America Rio Grande Valley has brought more than 1,500 leaders to South Texas schools. This year, more than 50 corps members and 200 alumni of Teach For America are teaching and serving in educational and other leadership roles throughout the Rio Grande Valley, reaching thousands of students daily. TFA fuels the Rio Grande Valley’s educational system by finding, developing, and supporting educators committed to student success, especially during a pandemic. During an incredibly challenging school year, our network of educators has been rising to the challenge of meeting academic as well as socio-emotional needs of students. The quality of schools in the region will determine the future life opportunities for children and the ability for our community to thrive. Teach For America Rio Grande Valley is committed to partner with students, families, schools, and the broader community to ensure that all students have a future full of possibilities.
