he resounding success of Confeti Magazine has encouraged us to give the title an even more international focus and scope. To that end, in January we attended and distributed the magazine at the Bride of the Year Show at the RDS Main Hall in Dublin – Ireland’s longest established (21 years) and “number one wedding show”. And in March (5th to 7th) we will be taking this issue to the National Wedding Show at the NEC in Birmingham – “the UK’s largest wedding spectacular”. Previously, in November, we formally presented the magazine at the Celebra wedding fair in Málaga, where the response was extremely heartening, confirming that – even during these recessionary times – couples are still pressing ahead with plans for their marriage, the Costa del Sol remains a dream wedding and honeymoon destination, and there is a definite

The international spotlight this issue is focused on the stunningly glamorous latest collection from Amanda Wakely (featured on the cover); an exclusive interview with couture bridal designer Sassi Halford; another invaluable makeup class with Ruby Hammer; celebrity hair advice from Tara Smith and… an exotic trip to one of the world’s most heavenly honeymoon havens, Sir Richard Branson’s Kasbah Tamadot retreat in Morocco. Our regular features cover the whole wedding experience, from choosing stunning gifts and favours, latest styles in wedding gowns, bridesmaids’ outfits, lingerie and menswear, and creative cake and floral arrangements to finding the ideal venue and the best photographer. Finally, for readers living outside Spain and looking for an exceptional and memorable wedding location, we can assure you that you will find all you need and desire here on the Costa del Sol – including the finest professionals in the business.

sk any man what the most important thing about his wedding day is and most of them will say, getting all their friends and family together for a party (apart from the obvious of course – marrying the love of their life). Ask any woman what her most important thing is and she will undoubtedly say that everything runs smoothly and that she looks amazing. To look perfect on your wedding day – the preparation and choosing your individual look is the key. The team at Bliss salon can assist brides-tobe in every detail of their hair and make-up to ensure that it is one less hassle on the actual wedding day. The salon at Urb. Guadalmansa has been popular with brides since it opened five years ago, so much so that another salon was launched at Hotel Villa Padierna 18 months ago. The newest salon ensures that brides marrying in the spectacular venue, which truly takes your breath away, need not worry about having to leave the hotel to have their wedding hair and make-up done. Many other members of the wedding party also stay at the hotel and want

Bliss salon offers special wedding packages tailored to each bride and groom – yes

Owner and hairstylist Lance recommends that brides use the earliest possible moment to visit either salon and have a chat with the team so that both sides can understand what the bride wants for the day and how she can achieve it – she would then be advised to have a trial two to three months before the wedding. As women do like to change their styles regularly different looks can be created. For example, extensions can be added and clipped-on just for the day, or hair pieces can be used for brides who want big romantic hair but only have short hair themselves. Brides who colour their hair – be aware! You should have highlights or colour added to your locks two days to a week before the wedding. But not before: otherwise the dreaded roots will appear in the photos – and those last a lifetime! Aside from hair, make-up is also something that brides

Have a professional facial as soon as possible but don’t leave it much less than two weeks before the day in case you get a breakout from the impurities being drawn out. Dry Body Brushing three times a week will not only make the skin on your body feel great but the increased circulation and lymph drainage will make your face glow as well. Another way to make sure your skin looks its best is to massage it when applying cleansers and creams to increase the circulation and make your skin look fresh and bright. What products do you recommend as beautifying quick fixes for the morning of a bride’s wedding (make-up or skincare)? Splash your face with lots of cold water in the morning to get the blood flowing then use a mask like Dr. Jules Nabet Revitaxin Mask (£75, 100ml). This is an instant radiance booster and quick lift for skin – www.julesnabet.com. After the mask use By Terry Preciosity Highlighting Primer Serum, which will illuminate and smooth the skin before you apply your make-up. As it’s a day of high emotion your skin is likely to be more

flushed than usual so go easy on the blusher. Add a subtle hint of colour on the apple of the cheeks – if you have oily skin, a powder blusher such as Bobbi Brown Shimmer Blush in Coral. If I get a spot, what is the best way to disguise it? If you have a spot on the day the best thing to do is work on hiding it the best you can. Use a good concealer on the spot after the foundation is applied and blend really well. Set with a translucent powder and keep a concealer to hand throughout the day to re-touch when needed.

Try piling curls right on top of the crown area if you want to add an elegant feel.
Think about the back During the ceremony, the only view that your guests will see is, of course, the back of you. Bearing this in mind; the back of your hairstyle must have as much consideration as the front. For that extra wow factor accessorise with fresh flowers, vintage hair pins or diamond hair slides.

Keep the top section straight and then curl the mid-lengths and ends with small curlers or thin tongs. For many a bride the thought of getting married is not just about marrying the love of her life but also about having her friends and family together and celebrating with them. On this special day a bride does, of course, want
to look her best and may go to extreme lengths to do that. If you have made sure every aspect of your day is perfect, from the venue to the dress, then you don’t want to be let down with any aspect of your body.
Extreme bridal CONFETI make over CONFIDENCE FROM
Marbella Dental Many brides come to the Coast to get married for the sunshine and the stunning surroundings of the area’s top hotels. However, while thinking of everything else that must be done for their wedding in the sun, they often forget about themselves. Marbella Dental offer a range of makeover procedures that can be carried out in a short space of time and are suitable for brides to ensure their smile is perfect and gleaming on the wedding day, and more importantly in all the pictures –
which stand on mantelpieces and shelves for years. Treatments at the clinic include a one-hour laser whitening, cleaning and polishing, and minor straightening and levelling, as well as a range of veneers. Brides can have a free no obligation consultation with Dr Steinruck before deciding on which particular treatment they will want and need for their wedding. The one-hour whitening treatment is €350, cleaning and polishing is €60, and straightening and levelling starts at €100.
The Dentists You want to be smiling with confidence in your wedding photos so your teeth can’t let you down. For brides-to-be, veneers could be just the solution to give you that ultimate smile makeover for the big day. Veneers are waferthin, custom-made shells of toothcoloured porcelain designed to cover the front surface of the tooth. They make it possible to change the colour, shape, size or length of a tooth, transforming stained, crooked, chipped and damaged teeth as well as closing gaps.Brides wanting veneers would need to visit Lotta Kvist at The Dentists at least two weeks 48

before their wedding to have a smile analysis, when photos and impressions of the teeth are taken to show you what the new smile will look like. The teeth are prepared for the veneers by shaving off approximately half a millimetre, and temporaries are put on which look just like your normal teeth. Then two or three weeks later the porcelain veneers are fitted. A whitening treatment can also be carried out on the remaining teeth, ensuring the brightest smile. In certain cases for brides who cannot have veneers, ceramic crowns may be an alternative.
Ocean Clinic Dr Kaye at the Ocean Clinic can offer brides many different body treatments before the wedding. If the bride has little time before her big day there are many procedures that can be performed which are very distinctive and are non-surgical treatments which require little or no downtime. These “lunch-time” procedures include Botox (€175€450), fillers for wrinkles or to enhance lips and cheekbones (€250-€600, depending on the amount of product needed) and skin soft peels (€500-€1,200). If the bride has more time before the wedding different surgeries can be considered that enhance the body or get rid of unwanted fat deposits – to achieve a perfect wedding silhouette. The treatments can include liposculpturing (from
€2,500) and breast enlargements (from €4,500) and mostly need 10 to 14 days recovery before the bride can attend any social events. There are also soft facial surgery procedures that can improve facial expressions and give a fresher look, including an eye lift (from €1,900), eyebrow lift (from €2,500) and liposuction of the neck to remover a double chin (from €1,500).

Capturing the moment THE FEMININE VIEW Julia Martinez is a former model turned photographer who runs Shoot the Bride, a contemporary wedding photography company. It is the sister company to Shoot the Moon which specialises in portraits, corporate photography, baby portraits, model portfolios and boudoir shots of the bride – the perfect gift for her groom. What is the benefit of having a female photographer? I feel that a female photographer can get closer to the bride as she can take more intimate photographs of the bridal party getting ready. A female photographer also has a firsthand knowledge of how the bride is feeling on her big day – the excitement, the nerves – and has a better idea of how to keep the bride calm. We also notice the small details such as shiny makeup, hairs out of place or the dress not sitting right. How do you think being a former model has helped with your photographic career? I modelled for 15 years, all over the world, in baking heat to freezing cold. I understand how uncomfortable the person being photographed can feel, so I try to make the experience as enjoyable and comfortable as possible. Being a model gives you first-

hand experience of poses and helps immensely when directing people. Also, it has given me a fantastic directory of all the best make-up artists, hairdressers, locations and venues in the world. Describe your career highlights? Graduating from my photography degree with a distinction and the highest award the university had received to date, winning the Fuji award for best photographer; working for Bob Carlos Clarke in London; and having my work exhibited there. This resulted in me meeting Richard Avedon and David Bailey. How would you describe your approach? Relaxed, fun, laidback, unobtrusive… It’s supposed to be a fun day so let’s make it fun! Describe a typical day for you, shooting a wedding? There is a lot of behind the scenes prep that goes on before the wedding day: meeting the bride and groom to discuss their expectations; getting a feel of the day they have planned; a list of the key family members; checking out the venue, etc. This then makes sure that on the day all
that is required is for me to report everything as it unfolds, right from the beginning when the bride and groom are getting ready. What is it like to capture such special moments for others? It is very humbling and I am incredibly honoured by it. I thank my lucky stars that I found my vocation and that it involves capturing special, magical moments that are cherished forever. I feel incredibly lucky. What advice do you give to brides to make them feel more comfortable and therefore take a better photo? If they are feeling tense I advise them to give themselves a shake, loosen up, then go into the pose again. Relax… put trust in the photographer. If needed I also give lots of encouragement on posed shots. What would a bride get from booking Julia Martinez as her photographer? A fun and relaxed experience. A woman’s understanding and attention to detail. A totally dedicated photographer who will stay until the very end because she loves what she does.

LIFE THROUGH A LENS Gary Tapp is an established, versatile wedding photographer who strives to make your wedding day as relaxed as possible. What sparked your interest in photography? My dad always had a camera when I was little which I played with and thought was really cool: so it started from an early age but didn’t really grow until the digital era. I worked with computers for a while then, in about 1994 when the first digital camera came out, my interest was sparked again so the two went hand in hand. Why did you decide to specialise in wedding photography? I started doing wedding photography for friends and family as they kept asking me, as well as the glamour, fashion and commercial, and then when more people started to ask I decided to set up a separate entity parallel to my other work. What is your style? I have a really relaxed style and approach to a wedding, to make it as informal as possible so the bride, groom and guests also stay relaxed. Obviously if a bride wants it more formal then I can accommodate this but generally the day leans towards a more documentary style. What do you do when you have a “Bridezilla”? I’m actually quite good with a “Bridezilla”; I’m quite good at calming people and reassuring them that everything will be fine. I tend to find that it’s usually after the wedding that brides are unhappy but I can always fix whatever it is they don’t like. Even if sometimes perhaps I wouldn’t agree, I will always do whatever it takes to make sure the bride is happy. How do you remain unobtrusive at a wedding? I use longer fast lenses so I can shoot at a distance, and always move around in soft shoes so as
not to make too much noise – there’s nothing worse than hearing footsteps during the ceremony. Also I try to use the natural available light as much as possible and don’t use the flash unless I have to or I’m trying to create a dramatic lighting effect. What is it like to capture such special moments for others? I’m really surprised actually at how much I enjoy shooting weddings. I enjoy the challenge and love the satisfaction of capturing a particular person doing something while they aren’t aware I’m taking their picture. Capturing the spirit of the day, a laugh or expression, is what it’s all about. What designs, albums, etc., do you offer? I offer prints, digital photo books and albums including Queensbury and Jorgensen. I use mainly print labs in the UK, including Ilford Labs who specialise in black and white prints using real silver gelatine photographic paper, so I can offer very high quality black and white prints using my specialist conversion process to produce images that brides always find beautiful and timeless. What do you love the most about your job? Visiting different places up and down the coast and inland – no two weddings are the same so it’s always a challenge which I love.
What would a bride get from booking Gary Tapp as photographer? Someone to rely on that can ease the stress that comes with planning a wedding, and ultimately everlasting memories of their special day.

WEDDING VENUES on the Costa del Sol
BUDGETING FOR QUALITY – WITH A SPECIAL PERSONAL TOUCH
V
isiting EPCC is like finding a little oasis of calm and tranquillity, providing the perfect venue for your special day. Owner Marion Lewendon and her team offer a bespoke and personal service that is individually tailored to your needs. The wedding fayre which took place at EPCC last October has provided an extensive portfolio of professionals, everything from photographers to dream cars and beauty experts; while a wide variety of entertainers and accommodation can now be easily located. The venue, established for over 20 years in the centre of the Patio Alcornocal community, offers various location options for the ceremony, dining and entertainment. The restaurant and crescentshaped terrace overlooks a beautiful pool and gardens. The Cristal Room – a creamcoloured function room on the first floor – is perfect to add your chosen colour for the reception, with access to a romantic terrace with both sea and mountain views, ideal for smaller ceremonies as well as a cava reception or to view latenight fireworks in the gardens.
For more intimate events, there is the Sala Rustica, a cosy, first floor room complete with antiques and log-fire. This room also has access to the terrace for pre-dinner drinks or a cake cutting ceremony. The bridge over the pool is illuminated at night and, together with garden torches and candle-lit tables, creates a magical evening ambience. The main focus of planning your wedding at EPCC is to provide a stress-free day, with the preparations for the big event both enjoyable and fun. In addition, as Marion notes, “Even in these difficult financial times a restricted budget should not mean restrictions on quality. We think of every wedding we cater for as being as important as planning our own. It is all about listening to clients’ needs to ensure their day is truly memorable.” With this in mind, the catering can be as diverse as a relaxed gourmet picnic, with cava, smoked salmon and cucumber sandwiches, and individual fairy cakes; a succulent hog roast or mouth watering barbecue lunch; or an elegant five-course formal wedding breakfast,
provided by new head chef Evan Owen. Franck Chaveau has also recently joined EPCC as maître d’. Evan and Franck are available to discuss personal requirements and devise a menu to suit your preferences – and budget.

THE VILLA PHENOMENON There is a new wedding phenomenon on the Coast that everyone is talking about – the villa wedding. It is estimated that one in three nuptials here now take place in a private villa, as opposed to a hotel or restaurant. There are several reasons for this, the most significant one being the feeling of true exclusivity and privilege that a private venue brings. When this is added to the flexibility it affords you in terms of decoration, timing and catering, it is no wonder brides and grooms are turning away from the rules and regulations of hotel venues, and taking matters into their own hands. This is a list of some of the best options in the area… MAGICAL LIGHTING

hen considering décor for our beautiful Mediterranean evenings choosing the right lighting is an important element for any party or wedding. Candles, twinkling fairy lights and lanterns dotted around transform gardens and create a romantic, magical party ambience. Our local wedding stylist, Laura at Reviva Weddings, recognised this was an important factor to styling any wedding and offers lantern and candle packs to our clients wishing to create a magical garden setting. Starting from just €350 Reviva Weddings have a whole host of ideas to choose from to help you create your dream fairytale evening.

LET US ENTER Choosing the entertainment for your wedding is like choosing the dress and venue. If you get it right, people will remember the wedding with fond memories of being serenaded at dinner and dancing until dawn. Get it wrong, however, and guests may leave early and be glad to get away from the terrible music and entertainment.
T
here are many different types of entertainment to choose from for the big day itself, and they are not all limited to a DJ or band after the “wedding breakfast” has been eaten. It is becoming very common to entertain guests throughout the day – every bride and groom want their wedding to be different and a bit more special than any other, so put some thought into the entertainment and don’t just pick the quickest or cheapest on offer. Take your time; the entertainment is just as important as the food or the venue. You may wish to start with a choir or harpist as guests arrive at the church. This will instantly set the romantic mood and excitement of a beautiful day that is about to unfold. Musicians can play as guests arrive at and depart from the church, or wherever it is that you are getting married, and then move on to the reception venue and carry on playing while you are eating, with some light background music – you do not want full-on music for the meal as people want to chat and relax. Musibodas, a classical music company on the Coast, can
58
CONFETI
provide professional, unique and classical music services including String Trio: two violins and concert harp; Classical Trio: violin, concert harp and singer soloist; and String Quintet: two concert harps and three violins (optional singer soloist). Something else to keep in mind is the toastmaster, who presents the bride and groom, and announces the speeches and when the meal is ready, among other things. Traditionally, wedding toastmasters are there to help the bride and groom and take care of the smaller details
that make a huge difference to the big day; however, some couples decide they want a member of the family or a friend to be the toastmaster, to make it a little more personal. I went to a friend’s wedding and they asked a very funny friend of theirs to be toastmaster; he was great, did exactly what was needed and was hilarious, all the while ensuring the smooth running order of the day. Alternatively, why not hire a Cheeky Butler to spice things up. They can meet and greet guests at the reception and
serve drinks before everyone sits down for the meal. There is a lot of choice for the evening’s entertainment – from a jazz or live band, to a wedding singer, to a DJ – it can be a refined or a lively evening depending on what exactly it is you want. Wedding DJs often have a reputation for playing cheesy music that no one wants to dance to, and guests end up sitting round the edge of the dance floor like kids at a disco when they were 13 and too scared to be the first one up dancing. However, in reality DJs usually only play what they are asked to by the bride and groom, so this is where you need to take a minute and have a think. Choosing the play list for the DJ is very important. The first list you
TAIN YOU!
make will undoubtedly include most of your favourite songs, and you will be able to imagine dancing the night away on your special evening. However, many of the songs on that list may not be the favourite songs of any of the guests, so why not ask around a bit, speak to friends and family and see what they would dance to, and then add in a few great cheesy songs that everyone will love. Remember, it may be your wedding but the DJ isn’t just playing for you: he’s playing to the whole wedding party. DJ Rob can provide a great repertoire of music for your special day and is able to read the party clearly to make sure the right music is being played and the guests are dancing and having a great time. A live band is a great way to make things lively and exciting at your reception. The Marbella
Big Band features top class singers and players with a huge variety of songs, including chart pop and rock hits from the ‘60s to the present day, soul and big band classics, as well as Frank Sinatra standards. They guarantee that they will cater for all music tastes, making your reception memorable – for you and your guests. The Mighty Pimps have a reputation for being the most versatile live band, with three established top musicians who have been entertaining on the Coast for years. The repertoire embraces disco, soul and funk music and, by adding a female vocalist, they become Tina and The Mighty Pimps. Sometimes it can be difficult choosing the right band or act to perform at your wedding; you know what kind of music you want but there is too much
choice. For times like this, it is a good idea to consult an agency like Pino Palma Music Productions who can handle everything from the act to the lighting, sound and staging, ensuring it’s one less hassle for you to worry about. Pino Palma Music Productions have many acts for you to choose from including The Costa Band, pop and rock bands, a salsa group and various other entertainment acts that would be suitable for your wedding.

Classic Elegance Looking back at the high points of the wedding at Hotel Villa Padierna of Ghali and Lisa (director of Exclusive Events) The inspiration... From the first moment we drove up to the Hotel Villa Padierna we both just knew it was the perfect setting for our wedding. We loved the classic elegance and understated grandeur of the hotel’s high ceiling and travertine statues and staircases, surrounded by a luxuriously green and romantic setting. It was everything we where looking for – and more. To follow through with this elegance we thought it would be complemented with a theme of “Diamonds and Pearls”, which we chose after listening to the song we both love by the artist Prince. The look... My dress was haute couture, bespoke with hundreds of handembroidered semi-precious crystals on ivory satin and pearl lace. Ghali and our pageboy had waistcoats and cravats made to 66
CONFETI
match from the same ivory satin as my dress. My flower girls had dresses made of tulle with crystals hand-stitched all over the skirts, finished off with a satin sash waistband made of the same fabric as my bridesmaids’ dresses, in a shade of what was called ‘‘Banana’’. We chose orchids for the flowers and thus matched the colour of the bridesmaids’ dresses with the centre of the orchid, and they too had a band of crystals under the bust. The finishing touches... The details were very important to me so I made sure our theme was brought in every way possible. Thousands of pearls lined the glass bases of the tall flower arrangements, which guests could see when seated. The tables had lots of loose Swarovski crystals placed carefully around, which our
guests scooped up and took home and went on to use as decoration in all sorts of wonderful ways. My serviettes were tied with organza and satin bows and had a crystal heart and pearl detail on each which the guests later wore as bracelets. The menus had laser-cut edges shaped in crystals and butterflies, and we had lots of tea candles to reflect and set the scene.
My favourite moment? Has to be the ceremony. Walking down the aisle with my Dad, the string quartet and grand piano playing beautifully in front of the lake. Seeing all my loved ones together in such a beautiful setting, all with so much emotion on their faces. It was so special; everything I had dreamed of had come together and it was even better then I had ever imagined.
How to create a romantic atmosphere.... Lighting is the key when it comes to atmosphere. Soft lighting is essential, and adding different coloured lighting can also create a magical, warm environment for the perfect wedding or event. Adding up-lighters to the corners of a room is such a simple and low-cost way to create the wow factor for your wedding venue. Money saving tips.... Exclusive Events are always looking to find ways to re-use key pieces throughout your wedding or event. One great idea we found are these bracelets. Made from real Swarovski crystals they not only make beautiful gifts for your guests to keep but also double up as napkin rings. They are great for adding a personal touch as they can be customised in any colour to match all themes. The string bracelets have seven crystals on each, which is believed by many religious leaders to bring luck. The number seven is directly linked to the power of the divine and has great symbolic value in many religions.

“I have not even started planning my wedding in Spain yet; what steps do I need to take?” Julia Clarke, 32, London
edding planners Hayley and Emma say: Firstly, don’t panic! You need to remember that this is your day. You don’t have to cater for friends and family with their likes and dislikes, as this is a day for you! We always suggest to our brides that they keep a wedding book to make notes, stick pictures and write down any ideas. This will be something to treasure in years to come. The first thing that you need to do is have a think about how many guests you would like to attend. This will help decide whether you are planning an intimate affair or a larger gathering, and this makes the choosing of the venue a lot easier. Next, you should choose your theme. Choosing a theme early on really helps with the

“What type of wedding flowers would be suitable for the Spanish heat?” Molly McKeirnan, 22, Dublin
Q
Florist Janne Valentin Lassen says: Normally you can use all kinds of flowers, since they are only needed on the day, but of course there are always flowers that last for longer, and I would recommend roses, cala, orchids, gerberas, freesia, carnations and lilies. Choosing flowers is of course very personal, and the bride wants her bridal bouquet to tell something about herself. Most brides choose white flowers, but luckily more and more brides “dare” to use other colours. I myself tend to be very romantic when it comes to flowers, and personally I would choose a close tied bouquet of mixed roses in pastel colours. It is the most beautiful thing in the world. My best guess for wedding flowers in the Spanish heat would be roses! 68

coordination of your decorations, cake, favours, menu, flowers, dresses and menswear. We find that the most fun part of planning a wedding for brides (apart from the choosing of The Dress!) is to discuss their vision for the day. We have many ideas to spark your imagination for fabulous themes such as Vintage,
Romantic, Seasons, Fantasy, Hollywood, Garden, Beach, Era, Butterflies, Fairytale, Floral, Cultural, Places, Angels, Bespoke and much more. The next step would be to discuss your venue. To narrow down your choices, you should decide if you would like a church wedding or a civil ceremony. Once decided, we would then look at suitable venues for your ceremony and for your reception to ensure your dream for the day is brought to life. Next you should look at the finer details such as the cake, wedding favours, transport, menu, flowers, dresses and menswear, photographer and music/entertainment. We see every aspect of a wedding as equally important as the other so as much care and attention should be given to the flowers, for example, as to the venue. Getting every part of the day just right will make it all slot into place beautifully, ensuring you are both as happy as can be as you become “Mr & Mrs” to start the rest of your lives together as husband and wife.

A special wedding place in Mallorca Having lived here for two years, Spain was very close to the hearts of Danny and Hayley Newbury (nee Bingham) so it was inevitable they would decide to be married in their own special place in Deia, Mallorca. The theme they immediately decided on was “Rustic Spanish”, and they incorporated this in many ways to include a traditional Spanish guitarist performing for the drinks reception, serving Spanish tapas as canapés and having the tables decorated with fresh fruit, flowers and candles – with hand-made treasure chest box favours for the guests containing Spanish pesetas. The setting for the décor of the church (Sant Joan Baptista) and restaurant was based on the luxurious Spanish manor house Abaco, in Palma city centre, being lit only by candlelight, scattered with rose petals and displaying fresh fruit and flowers. The dress was created by awardwinning designer Maggie Sottero; and the photographer was Wilfred Chierico.

bothers any girls in the pub, hogs the karaoke and is a general pain in the arse. Normally that’s me. And here’s another bit of earth shattering news for the Best Man. The Stag Night doesn’t have to include strippers, especially if you live in Marbella. There are a couple of reasons behind this, the first one being that you only have to take a trip down to the beach clubs in summer to see semi naked girls. And if you do hire a stripper, make sure that she’s just going to strip and isn’t planning to spring any surprise “extras’ on a
drunken and unsuspecting groom in a “Brian McFadden” moment. You also want to think again if you’re planning to force the groom to wear fancy dress. You only need to stroll past Lineker’s of a weekend to see grooms dressed as babies, or in more extreme cases, painted blue and handcuffed to a midget on a Smurf themed stag weekend. (Yes, I HAVE seen this.) But even fancy dress can be fraught with danger. I once went on a Stag Weekend in Torremolinos with a group of Australians who decided to dress the groom as a blonde. All was going swimmingly until we decided to hit the biggest disco in town, where we found it hysterical that the groom was being chatted up by a drunken guy at the bar. Hysterical, that was, until the drunk suddenly realised that he was chatting to a bloke and unleashed a right-hander out of nowhere. A good old fashioned bar brawl ensured with tables upturned, women screaming and the stag party fleeing the scene, which wasn’t easy for the groom, unaccustomed as he was to running in stilettos. He woke the next day with a huge black eye, which I thought looked particularly fetching in the wedding photos. So, if you’ve managed to get the Stag Night over and done with, and in the words of Brian
"You’re there to support him and get him to the church, not help him plan a last minute dash to Vegas in a moment of pre wedding nerves"
Hanrahan, have “Counted them all out and counted them all back in again”, it’s time for the big day. The groom is likely to be a little nervous so you’ll be a combination of big brother, sergeant major and good cop/bad cop. You’re there to support him and get him to the church, not help him plan a last minute dash to Vegas in a moment of pre wedding nerves. And whatever you do, make sure that you don’t lose the bleeding ring, Frodo. Having rounded up the ushers from the nearest pub and handed out the breath freshening mints, you’ll probably find that the ceremony is the easiest part of the day. The happy couple and the guests head off to the reception, and as Best Man it’s time to come face to face with your fear. It’s time for the Best Man speech. When you stand to deliver the speech, remember that you’ll have the groom terrified that you could do him crippling damage in the next 15 minutes, and the bride worried that her wholesome image is about to go out of the window when you recount the story about the time she was a student barmaid when the All Blacks walked in. Don’t worry about having to be the natural heir to Jimmy Tarbuck with one-liners. Your audience is
willing you to succeed, and you’ll be fine as long as you avoid the stag weekend, his previous partners, her previous partners, the bride’s mother, slagging off the food or the venue. or which bridesmaid you fancy. My favourite best man “God, please kill me now” moment comes from the Best Man’s speech at a huge wedding in Barcelona. “Marriage,” he began “Is a question of honour.” Lots of “hear hears!”, polite applause and beaming smiles from the top table. “Get on her and stay on her!” Stunned silence, broken only by the sound of me calling a taxi… If you’ve managed to get the speech over and done with, and haven’t been chased from the reception by the bride’s family brandishing burning torches and screaming “Kill the monster”, then you can relax and enjoy the celebrations. Now is the time to show the killer dance moves, unleash your best George Clooney smile on the bridesmaids and singlehandedly lower the European Veuve Clicquot lake. Best Man duties over, you can bask in the admiration of your peers, happy in the knowledge of a job well done. Until that fateful moment when the groom takes you aside and asks you if you fancy being a godfather… CONFETI

The ULTIMATE Honeymoon Haven
THIS ISSUE WE MOVE FURTHER AFIELD IN OUR SEARCH FOR EXCEPTIONAL, AND EXOTIC, HONEYMOON DESTINATIONS… DISCOVERING THE ÜBER LUXURIOUS ATTRACTIONS OF RICHARD BRANSON’S KASBAH TAMADOT RETREAT IN MOROCCO
M
orocco is a land of stunning contrasts, from the centuries-old tradition of a bustling and bucolic market square to the contemporary splendour of a verdant hinterland retreat. Take Kasbah Tamadot, for example. In a delightful potpourri of cultural integration, all its rooms are equipped with iPod leads and Bose iPod stations – as well as Moroccan slippers (Babouches) and ponchos (Bernous)! About an hour’s drive from central Marrakech, in the
84
CONFETI
foothills of the Atlas mountains, it is as far removed from the classic Morocco of backpacking tourists as it is intimately attuned to the “new” Moroccan tourism of five-star hotels, stateof-the art spas, championship golf courses, the ultimate in luxury – and all in select, secluded and serene settings far from the madding crowd. One of Sir Richard Branson’s privately owned Virgin Limited Edition collections of luxury retreats, Kasbah Tamadot is surrounded on one side by a river valley with sheer rocky
limestone and forested mountains, and on the other by snow-capped peaks. To the east, a traditional Berber village is built into the side of the mountain; while the retreat’s own grounds include a garden of specimen fruit trees, a collection of cacti and a rambling rose garden. In short, the ideal place to enjoy a memorable honeymoon. Nonresidents are unable to marry legally in Morocco, but Kasbah Tamadot – which means “soft breeze” in Berber – can organise a traditional blessing and Berber feast for couples to celebrate with
friends and family before enjoying their own time together. So what makes the Kasbah so special – apart from its setting? Originally it was the home of Luciano Tempo, who filled it with antiques from India, Africa and the Far East. In 1998 Richard Branson went to Morocco as part of his famous attempt to circumnavigate the globe in a hot air balloon and, while there, his parents discovered the Kasbah and dreamt of turning it into an exclusive Moroccan retreat. His mother convinced him to purchase the property, and they
set about working on an extensive refurbishment that was careful to maintain, and enhance, the original character and charm of the complex, “marrying traditional Moroccan colours, textures and patterns with a more contemporary treatment to the interior architecture”. In buying the property, Branson also inherited Luciano’s 1,000 square metre warehouse in Asni, “filled to the brim with his treasures” – with pieces from his collection used to furnish the Kasbah. Kasbah Tamadot comprises 24 uniquely decorated rooms and suites; with 90 per cent of the staff being local Berbers from the surrounding villages, giving guests “a sense of staying in a Moroccan home rather than a hotel”. The accommodation includes 15 rooms and suites in the main building; a master suite at the end of the garden, with three
rooms including the Deluxe Pool Suite (this is generally hired privately as a three-room cottage); and six Berber tented suites opened in 2008, set on the hillside overlooking the valley and offering superb views of Mount Toubkal, northern Africa’s highest peak. The tented suites, also equipped with private plunge pools, are variously named Afoulky (beauty), Addou (wind), Amalou (shade), Azoka (tree), Adrar (mountain) and Azenzer (ray of sun) – in a reflection of their appealingly natural settings and charm. The extensive shared spaces are filled with staircases, courtyards and gardens; and include indoor and outdoor pools, the Asounfou spa, a traditional Moroccan Hammam, a deep-blue reflecting pool, the Kanoun restaurant, a rooftop terrace perfect for sipping G&Ts or cocktails as the sun sets,
tennis courts, a gymnasium, and a salon/library with flat-screen TV, DVD player and DVDs, games and a log fire. “Asounfou” comes from the Berber word meaning relaxation, and there is no shortage of that at the spa. Guests can enjoy an indoor pool, treatment rooms (using exclusive products), spa, Hammam and, if the weather allows it, an outdoor treatment room where newly-married couples can have a simultaneous massage while admiring the mountain views. The treatments include: “The Moroccan Experience” – to deep-cleanse, purify and soften the skin, based on the traditional weekly Moroccan cleansing ritual; Hammam – where a traditional soap derived form black olives is applied,
while guests sip herbal infused teas; and Nectarome Aromatherapy, using products based on old Moroccan recipes and sourced from the Atlas foothills in Morocco’s first aromatherapy gardens. Men can enjoy a luxury shave using products to deeply cleanse the skin, a mask to rehydrate, hot and cold towels and a soothing massage – “the closest of shaves!”; and for women, the Rose Renew Facial, a “truly feminine experience” during which the pampering begins by lying on a bed of fresh Moroccan rose petals. Named after the Berber word for a traditional free-standing charcoal burning brazier of sunbaked clay, the Kanoun restaurant offers a fireside bar for pre-dinner drinks, a stunning

dining area for lunches and dinners, a range of local and international cuisine and a selection of international and Moroccan wines; while guests (as well as casual lunch visitors, on request) can also choose to dine al fresco next to the infinity pool, on the rooftop terrace under the stars – or, for something even more romantic, “somewhere private just for two”. Cookery classes are also held in the afternoon, during which guests can learn to prepare traditional Moroccan and Berber dishes, using centuries-old methods, while tasting selected wines. Many guests will be perfectly happy to limit their stay to the Kasbah itself, especially those on honeymoon, but the retreat also offers a wide and varied range of other activities. These include trips by private car, with an English-speaking driver, to Marrakech; or even a visit accompanied by fashion designer and personal shopper Laetitia, who knows all the top showrooms with latest Moroccan creations and designs and can also organise “Fashion Inspiration Trips”. For the more active, there are numerous different treks in the mountains (up to as high as 4,167 metres, the Toubkal peak); mountain biking through the valleys; horse-trekking; mule riding; guided day excursions by car; golf (including the Royal Golf
86
CONFETI
Course, owned by King Mohamed VI, and Palmerie Golf Course, designed by Robert Trent Jones); and… not surprisingly, hot air ballooning! The “Sunshine Balloon Experience”, for example, is a romantic flight designed for two people; and on landing the couple enjoy a light breakfast with champagne before returning to Kasbah Tamadot. As for the best time to visit Kasbah Tamadot – if you are still finalising the date for your wedding – the landscape and perspectives on local life vary depending on the season, but the climate is pleasantly moderate throughout the year: as high as 38ºC in Marrakech in summer; with an average winter daytime temperature of between 18 and 23ºC. It is usually a few degrees cooler in the mountains of Kasbah Tamadot – which can be especially welcome during summer. VIRGIN UNITE MAROC Spearheaded by Richard Branson’s mother, and coming under the auspices of Kasbah Tamadot and Virgin Unite (Virgin Group’s entrepreneurial foundation), the Eve Branson Foundation aims to help local people in the long term by setting up sustainable enterprises. So far these include a carpet workshop and a craft house run and managed by locals. They have set up “Angel Spa Packages” in aid of the charity, where 15 per cent of the money from treatments sold helps raise funds for this worthy cause.

ONFETI laughs... The Diary Of A Male Wedding Planner
‘‘I do… but sometimes I don’t!’’ Where is it? Where the hell is it? I am on my knees in a Marbella church square, frantically looking under cars for that Willie Wonka Gold Ticket, aka “My Spanish Traffic Permit”. It’s 10 minutes before the wedding ceremony and the policeman is striding towards me with nostrils flaring! His attention has not missed the three unauthorised Mercedes parked in “his” square. I have permission but I can’t find the permit. He babbles as much Spanish at me as one can in an eight-second period. This guy is not taking prisoners. These cars are being moved – pronto! I can understand some words like “car” and other minor swear words picked up living here for three years. Then, like a heaven-sent angel at night, I spot my permit floating near his motorbike. At this moment a homeless man appears out of nowhere and offers to help if I give him €20. I explain my problem to the dubious Danish tramp and listen to him talk to the policeman in perfect English, just adding the letter “o” onto every word to sound Spanish. The policeman, in near perfect English, turns to me and says, “Well, if you have a permit you have no problem.” Is this a set up? Is it something the homeless man does with this policeman all the time? Do they split the profits? My wife, Chief Superintendant, Head Honcho, Planner Supreme, arrives like Greta Garbo with large dark glasses across her eyes; she has been inside the church all this time. She takes one look at my attire and tuts, “You could have at least put on a clean suit for the wedding today.” My first effort at trying to explain is met with her “typical men” mutterings! As a planner you try to prepare for every eventuality but one thing you can never predict is the scary way God lands you in certain situations. Last year we did a wedding in the Old Town and the night before the wedding the groom – with a few drinks in him – told the bride’s dad what he thought of him. Fast-forward to church time and none of the 85 guests are present. Then the groom gives me and my wife the ultimate question: will you be our witnesses? “Sure,” says
my wife. I turn to her and give her that famous Father Dougal stare from Father Ted… a look of sheer terror that comes over us when faced with the impossible. “Eh Sue, one teeny weeny problem here.” “What?” “I’m Jewish!” “You’ll be fine,” she says. Anyway we all go into the church, the ceremony is in full flow, and it is time for communion. The priest goes along the line and finally asks me: do I want communion? I can feel my wife’s eyes going through me like laser beams; her foot is now bench-pressing my toe, urgently telling me to get on with it. I will not crack. I have the good rabbi on one shoulder begging me to stay on side; while on the other, Satan is screaming at me to accept this offering. Like Dermott O’Leary with The X-Factor results, I have my small audience held captive, waiting. I look at the priest with a Clint Eastwood “go on punk, make my day” sort of look and shout: “NEVER!” The bride and groom’s jaws just drop. The priest is, to say the least, slightly thrown. My wife mutters under her breath, “Typical man.” It is like the opposite of Barack Obama’s political campaign slogan; I am Mr. “No I can’t”! I’ve done so many weddings now that I feel I could go to Wedding Planners Anonymous (W.P.A.).
Just imagine it… “Hi, my name is Howard and I am a wedding planner.” Around me all these stressed out planners with foreheads like onion peels, bulging eyes, paracetemol at the ready, say, “Hello Howard.” We then swap stories and laugh together at the Bridezillas who are impossible to control. spanishdreamweddings.com
