LETTER FROM THE

PUBLISHER

STAFF

W

hen we launched Confeti last year the main objectives were to provide a definitive and all-embracing magazine for couples planning their weddings and a welltargeted advertising platform for businesses and specialists involved in this fascinating – and flourishing – industry. The very generous comments we have received suggest we have achieved those goals, but we have also discovered a third “role” for the magazine. Once the relevant companies and experts advertising in Confeti have been consulted, when the planning has been concluded, and the wedding and honeymoon have become cherished memories, we have found that many couples still want something else from the magazine. A special memento, or keepsake. They have the photo album, the DVD and the gifts, but the icing on the cake, so to speak, is to have their wedding featured in a followup issue of Confeti.

04

CONFETI

As you will see in this issue, several couples have already asked their photographers to send us images after the event to include in our new “Confeti s You” feature, and we are planning other sections for the many newlywed couples who have told us they want an even more lasting, and widely disseminated, memento of their special day. In a way, doubling as a kind of select social networking source for friends, acquaintances and distant family who were unable to make it on the day. If you would like more information about this offer, we will be pleased to receive your call or email, or you can make the arrangements directly with your photographer. We have reached agreement with many of the top wedding photographers on the Coast to offer special discounted rates to their clients. We are also pleased to report that our visit to the Bride of the Year Show in Dublin resulted in one very happy couple receiving a wonderful prize which has enabled them to

set a date for their wedding on the Coast next year. In March we were at the National Wedding Show in Birmingham and, once again, we were pleased to see how the magazine was very well received – by both couples and exhibitors. We plan to boost our presence at other fairs outside Spain over the coming months, while also consolidating our growing relationship with wedding planners around Europe. In the meantime, our new bumper issue for summer features an exclusive interview with “The Godfather of Bridal”, Jasper Conran; a chat with cake maker to the stars Peggy Porschen; and a dream visit to the idyllic Caribbean island of St Lucia for this issue’s featured honeymoon destination. For autumn, don’t miss our special issue on Gibraltar – where John Lennon and Yoko Ono were famously married in 1969.

Foundation: G Primer is a must. The right primer will keep your make-up on longer, your face shine-free and even diminish the appearance of fine lines and large pores. G Even if you don’t wear a foundation it’s a good idea to use a lightweight one to even out your complexion; photos and videos tend to show every little thing. The Mineral Tint Foundation is lightweight and feels like a second skin. G Don’t be tempted to apply a darker foundation to get a healthy glow – it will look awful. Opt for an all-over false tan instead.

Concealer: G The Concealer Palette is a must for dark circles or blemishes. Apply after foundation or tinted moisturiser for the best results.

Powder: G In photos too much shine looks sweaty; even if you want a dewy look keep your t-zone mat. Simply sweep a little Universal Yellow Powder over your t-zone.

1. Personalised pieces

2. Table decoration

We were so excited to discover such a novel and fresh idea as the heirlooms and favours available from Paloma’s Nest. Every piece is individually made with care, pride and passion, using only the highest quality materials. By adding names, dates and customer inscriptions to the piece, it is ensured your ring bearer bowl or other modern heirloom will be cherished for years and even generations to come.

Romance is back in table dressings. This new collection called Paradise from Weissfee (Germany) is a contemporary twist on the doily. The runners are partially open, meaning a contrasting tablecloth can be placed underneath to create a stronger or more subtle look. The gold version looks stunning with black underneath and, if you want a softer look, we suggest a pebble beige or lilac under the white version.

Less is more with the flower arrangements. Try adding height to the centre of the tables with the flowers. This leaves you more space around the table and will have more of an impact as your guests enter the room. You can use a single colour in the flowers and a colourful vase. Simple and graceful!

4. Creating the ambience Weddings usually carry on into the early hours of the morning and the nighttime ambience is as important as the daytime atmosphere. We love the collections by Think Gadget for price and quality – this company has a range of stunning chain lights in orchids, moonlights, crystals and pearls perfect to decorate and illuminate. They have an exterior range too with floating lilies for the ponds, pools and even as centre table pieces in oversized glass bowls. The perfect way to help softly light the evening festivities. 5. Cakes The choices with your wedding cake now are endless. If you are heading towards the traditional three-tier arrangement, check out weddingcakesspain.com – they will tailor make your cake in the colours of your wedding and even coordinate the décor with your flower arrangements. If you want something a little more casual how about going for the individual cupcake option from deliciouscakesandtreats.com which can be just as gorgeous and are becoming more and more popular.

7. All eyes on the bride Colourful cupcakes by deliciouscakesandtreats.com

With it being the bride's special day all eyes should be on her, with this year’s make-up trends favouring the unique and bold look. Reflections Hair & Beauty Salon points out how striking the bride's eyes should be. Heavy shading and even the use of skin crystals helps complete a jaw-dropping look.

6. The indulgent wedding favour It is always hard to find the perfect inexpensive wedding favour for both men and women. La Moraga Sweet in Puerto Banús have a gorgeous array of chocolates and bonbons that they can individually package for an ideal favour your guests can take home. They can also work with you to provide an alternative dessert.

Many photographers are now offering a great alternative. A mess the dress photo session allows you to get all dressed up and have fun by yourself or with your partner. The concept allows you to have a secondary set of wedding photos with a more relaxed, romantic feel.

LEAVE IT TO THE PROFESSIONALS Top tips on how to choose the perfect wedding caterer The average couple spend between 70 and 80 per cent of their total wedding budget on catering, making it a hugely significant element in the planning process. With the rise in popularity of private venues on the Coast, outside catering is a booming business but one that can go very wrong if left in the wrong hands.

O

n the one hand, holding your wedding in a hotel or restaurant makes the catering side of things relatively easy as everything is taken care of but, on the other hand, menus tend to be a great deal more inflexible and of course more expensive due to heavy mark-ups on alcohol, with free bar costs often pushing wedding budgets to their limit. When choosing your catering company, the main deciding factor should be – will using this service make life harder than just going to a hotel? Look out for hidden costs and extra work involved with smaller companies that don’t stock their own tables, chairs, linens and other equipment or arrange cleaning. Other important factors to look out for are whether they offer a complimentary tasting, include waiter service and will allow you to bring your own alcohol in. When making initial contact with caterers, the main things they will want to know will be what kind of menu you are looking for – buffet, sit down, barbecue, etc? Most will offer a selection of menus for you to browse and they should be able to send you photos of events they have previously catered. This is important, as the visual aspect is vital and having no pictures to show is an indication of disorganisation and lack of experience or professionalism. Other pitfalls to look out for: sometimes couples or parents have a particular

62

CONFETI

restaurant or chef that they are familiar with in the area and invite them to cater their wedding. This can be problematic – as they need to be experienced in the area of outside catering, which requires an entirely different set of skills to a restaurant scenario. Don’t always look for the cheapest option, as experience, hygiene and customer service always comes at a price and are worth it in the long run. Always make sure that someone from the company is willing to come to visit the venue beforehand if they are not already familiar with it, as you don’t want any problems with ovens, electricity or space on the day. They should be clear as to when they need final numbers by and what their payment terms are. Several different styles of catering companies are in operation on the Costa del Sol. There are the long-established and well-known Spanish businesses that have been around for years. You can benefit from their solidity and experience though there may be discrepancies in style of food as they cater more to the well-heeled traditional Spanish crowd. Wedding cakes for instance are a whole different ball game, involving very sweet and creamy pastries, and most will be unfamiliar with the more traditional English sugar paste icing and tiered styles. Then there are the smaller companies, often involving just one chef who might

specialise in areas such as villa and yacht catering as well as small wedding groups. These companies can often offer a more personalised service but would usually have to hire in all equipment, which can sometimes complicate matters. There are also a few establishments which are designed to cater for the younger more International crowd and have specific experience in weddings, small and large. They offer a one-stop shop for not only the food but all the tables, chairs, linens, gazebos, red carpet, lighting, sound system, etc., and really do excel at making the whole process as pain-free as possible. In the south of Spain, we benefit from a range of stunning local and organic ingredients, and the best caterers will take full advantage of the resources that are available to them. The best wedding food is simple – excellently sourced ingredients that are beautifully presented. Overly fussy menus don’t tend to appeal to everyone and classic choices are usually the best. Presentation is, of course, one of the most important elements and is the area that raises a normal buffet or sit down meal to the level that befits an occasion as special and exclusive as a wedding. It is one of the things you hope that your guests will talk about and remember for a long time afterwards and any catering company should take this extremely

WEDDING BOUQUETS WITH A TOUCH OF

Rustic& Bohemian Style

A large sign on the wall of the Flor Valentin garden centre quotes renowned Danish author and poet Hans Christian Andersen: “Just living is not enough… one must have sunshine, freedom, and a little flower.” It is easy to understand why Janne Valentin Lassen chose the quote. In the first place, she is also originally from Andersen’s birthplace, Odense; and second, she has an avid passion for

66

CONFETI

flowers – perhaps enhanced by the fact she came into the business in a major career change. Janne and her boyfriend Benny Hansen were on

an Interrail trip in 1992 when, during a stop off on the Costa del Sol, they visited a Norwegianowned horticultural centre in Coín which Benny, a horticulturist, had heard about back in Denmark. The owners offered them a job, which they discussed on the train trip through Spain and southern France, and when they reached Nice they sent a “yes, we are interested” postcard to the centre. By July 1993 they were back in Coín, ostensibly for just one year, but 17 years later they are still there – now wellestablished “locals” with two trilingual children going to international school. Benny continues to work at the horticultural centre but three and a half years ago Janne, who had been in the clothes business back in Denmark but by then was an experienced hand in the flower business, decided to make her dream come true and open her own small garden centre. On 24 March 2007 that dream become a reality, and six months later she was joined by a Swede who has lived in Spain for 12 years with her

Finnish husband and their two children, and who – though, like Janne, not a trained florist – shares her passion and has an exceptional eye for flowers and decoration. Originally, they did not offer cut (or fresh) flowers at the centre but Janne had a chance meeting with two visiting Danish florists who offered to provide them with some intensive training – “like a little school” – in return for a place to stay. “Fortunately, we had plenty of room at our home in Coin.” Now 50 per cent of their business is cut flowers. The wedding side of the business “sort of happened”, according to Janne. “People

asked us to do bridal bouquets and I threw myself into it. It is very exciting to be a part of their special day.” Just how well she threw herself into this very specialised sphere is highlighted by the fact that Flor Valentin are now the official florists for the El Campanario Norwegian church in Calahonda. Located in the Scandinavian commercial centre Centro Idea (on the Fuengirola-Mijas road), with ample parking space, Flor Valentin offer everything from seedlings to mature olive trees, various fruit trees and palm trees, as well as a wide variety of pots and planters, sphagnum (peat moss), fertilisers, wood shavings, fountains, interior plants, cut flowers, bouquets,

decorations (original designs, specially imported from Denmark, Germany, Holland and Sweden), candles and lanterns – plus garden and terrace designs, working with an experienced Spanish gardener. Gift-wrapping is a special art at Flor Valentin, making the centre a perfect option for those seeking something a little different for wedding presents. “Beautiful bags, cellophane and tissue paper, as well as tasteful ribbons, make the experience extra unique when you want to give a nice present or just spoil yourself,” says Janne. The Flor Valentin style is described as “rustic with a twist of French bohemia”, a cosy and

homely atmosphere with highly personalised service and advice. As Janne has discovered over the past 17 years, the Costa del Sol is blessed with wonderful sunshine and the freedom to enjoy an incomparable lifestyle. All that is needed, then, is to add “a little flower” – especially on the most special day of your life – for living to truly become “enough”, in a way Hans Christian Anderson would certainly have approved. ONFETI real weddings ...

Rural Splendour Looking back at Emily and Jesse’s countryside wedding in the heart of Andalucía Our vision… We always knew we wanted to get married in a rural location away from the coast, and so the moment we arrived at El Cortijo la Prensa, after a breathtaking drive through centuries’ old olive groves, we knew we had found our venue and, with it, the theme for our wedding. We loved the fact that the building is historic, a mansion house and olive mill, and that it has been restored both luxuriously and in keeping with its past. To top that off, it was the jaw-dropping courtyard that blew us away. We could just picture our guests eating their wedding breakfast around the fountain with the smell of jasmine and lavender in the air. Our style… I wanted our look to be vintage and fairly classic. As the whole 68

CONFETI

day was taking place outside in the mature grounds, I knew that most of our colour and texture would be provided naturally, so I didn’t want any strong colours for the bridesmaids’ dresses, flowers and décor. We had classic white flowers such as roses, lilies and hydrangeas, and my bouquet was made up of white and cream roses. It was also a hot September day, so we bought white Chinese parasols to shade our guests, which looked fab in the pictures. We decided to have an accent colour, as we didn’t want the décor to be too plain. I love gold as a colour and it was in keeping with the venue, so the bridesmaids’ dresses were a light shade of gold and the flower girls wore ivory. We also used gold ribbons on our invitations, orders of service and menus, to continue the theme.

For my dress, again I wanted quite a classic, stunning but understated gown (no lace, no sparkle, no beads) and also something that would be comfortable in the heat and show off my figure modestly. I wore vintage style, cream, suede, custom-made shoes with a gold leather trim. All my accessories and jewellery were gold and matched the rest of the no-frills style.

Even our lighting was very natural and simple. No technical electric lighting, just rustic fire torches, fairy lights and floating candles in the fountain for the evening. The icing on the cake… What made our wedding even more special, more than we could have imagined, was the fact that we had a three-day

event in a venue exclusive to us. The evening before the wedding, we had a beautifully lit dinner on the patio terrace, so that our guests could get acquainted – there definitely was an added sense of unity on the big day itself. And then the following day we had a pool-side barbecue, which was such a brilliant way to carry on the celebrations and the highs of the day before. The weather was also lovely, another reason why we got married in Spain, meaning that our entire three-day celebration was al fresco, taking place in a fantastic natural setting. That really did it for us. Our treasured moment… It has to be the ceremony. It was so personal, full of laughter and emotion, and allowed us to be married in exactly the way we wanted. We had quite a unique end to the ceremony, where our guests left before we did, so that when we arrived at our reception area we were greeted by them, and also by a storm of rose petals and rice (a Spanish tradition), which was hilarious!

“Can I hold a Jewish wedding ceremony in Marbella?” Hannah Adams, 35, Manchester

“We have an unusual theme for our wedding with different colours that we have chosen. We can't find anything for favours and stationery in these colours… what can I do? Jaqui Andrews, 39, Málaga

Q

Wedding planner Hayley Newbury says: We run a bespoke service where we create favours and stationery according to your individual theme and colour choices. We create a selection of samples to send to you. For example, one bride was basing her wedding around the Spanish flag, wanting red and yellow throughout her wedding. We created Spanish flag stationery, place names, table names, napkin ties and beautiful favours for guests. Another bride wanted a button and bags theme so we created pretty handbag favours with feature buttons, with the stationery range and table décor to match. We have dealt with everything from beach themes to winter wonderlands. Whatever your idea, we can incorporate it into your special day. 70

edding planner Heather Sadtler says: Yes, you can hold a Jewish wedding blessing here in Marbella, but you must back it up with a civil ceremony either back home or in nearby Gibraltar. In Spain, the only officially recognised ceremonies are Catholic ones or civil ones if you are a resident. Having said that, we arrange a large number of Jewish weddings down here and there are many fantastic options. As there are two synagogues in the area, there are rabbis available to hold the blessing for you, though many couples bring their own rabbis over from home. A chuppah can be set up in the

area of your choice, usually in the same venue as the reception, and there is a good variety of catering companies and hotels that can provide kosher banquets. There is also a local kosher butcher if you want to source some of your own ingredients. It is always advisable to request menu tastings for any wedding, but particularly in the case of a Jewish wedding, to make sure all dietary requirements are respected, and most reputable venues and catering companies should offer these on a complimentary basis.

Cake maker Fiona Dodson says: 2010 is incorporating many different types of trends, from eco-chic to the contemporary classic to the timeless romantic. Brides are branching out from their comfort zones, often choosing more daring styles, experimenting with bright modern colours, or incorporating the design of their dress into the cake, rather than opting for traditional pastels. A popular cake trend this year is one of “statement”, whether this be in a form of a cupcake tower or a five-tier cake, although some layers can be fake. Brides are also steering away from the traditional fruit cake and choosing more exotic flavours. Another trend is that of “dessert tables” where the bride and groom can offer their guests a choice of cakes, biscuits, cupcakes, etc. What is most important is for a bride to choose a design that suits them regardless of the current trends: that is what will make their day truly unique.

A dream seaside wedding Maria and Farrell Cahill’s wedding was inspired by El Oceano’s beautiful backdrop: the sea. The couple worked with Spanish wedding planner Dianna and her team at Party People to create the wedding of their dreams. Simplicity was the key in order to accentuate the fabulous El Oceano setting. From beautiful flowers to the candlelit tables and scattered seashells… everything complimented this amazing location. An excellent group of musicians played at the ceremony, while a wonderful Spanish guitarist was chosen for the cocktail hour, ensuring they had the perfect music match for the day – an important part of any wedding. To top it all off photographer Jeremy Standley somehow managed to capture each and every wonderful moment on camera without them even knowing he was there! As Maria commented later, “If we could do it all again tomorrow we would not change one thing about the whole day.”

CONFETI IN IRELAND Fantastic wedding prize for Irish couple

From left to right: Kris McGuirk, Sue Danker, Shona from Bunches Joanne from Tamisa, Colin and Lisa.

Irish couple Colin McNabb and Lisa Devaney will be able to realise their dream wedding in Spain next year thanks to Confeti Magazine. The happy couple

he couple entered a draw with hundreds of other hopefuls at a wedding fair in Dublin in January. Operated by Spanish Dream Weddings, a Marbella-based wedding planning agency, the draw offered a first prize valued at €5,000 which for any young couple would make their wedding so much more affordable. The prize-winner was drawn on stage at the end of the show by Sue Danker, director of Spanish Dream Weddings, and she immediately phoned the lucky couple, who had read a flyer about the fair distributed inside a copy of Confeti Magazine which they picked up in Dublin.

Colin said that when he received the call they had left the city and were browsing in a shop. After two years of “very bad luck” they nearly fell over with the shock of their good news and screamed down the phone in delight. The next day Colin phoned the agency to check exactly what they had won, as none of this information had registered the previous day in the midst of all their excitement. They were told it included a free wedding planning package from Spanish Dream Weddings; a free drinks and canapés reception for 100 guests from Hotel Tamisa Golf; free wedding flowers from Bunches florist in Mijas Costa; a €1,000

photography voucher from Kris McGuirk Photography; a free chauffeur-driven Mercedes for their wedding day; and a red carpet and champagne on arrival. This entire prize made up about 50 per cent of the total cost of their wedding. This spring, Colin and Lisa visited the Hotel Tamisa Golf to meet with the team for their wedding. They were greeted by events manager Joanne, who also gave them a complimentary night’s stay in a suite, and after viewing the wonderful outdoor area by the pool – with the backdrop of a golf course and the mountains of Mijas – the couple set their wedding date for 30 June next year.

They certainly had luck following them, as all flights had been grounded out of Dublin since the previous weekend due to the volcanic ash crisis and, for some reason, their flight was the first allowed from Dublin to Málaga – and it even landed early!

PA M P E R DAY S In this new regular feature, Confeti is going to review the finest spas in Spain. Whether it be for your hen do, honeymoon or even to tackle pre-wedding stress, we will find something suitable for everyone.

By Belle Roberts

THE THALASSO SPA AT THE MARBELLA CLUB he team at Confeti thought my husband and I, as newlyweds, would be the perfect duo to sample the spa delights of Spain. Who were we to turn that down? Our first port of call was Marbella’s famous Thalasso Spa. Located on the beach, with the Mediterranean at its doorstep, this stunning spa blends the rich heritage of the past with the most up-to-the-minute treatments to ease away stress and beautify. The spa occupies 800 square metres, featuring a dynamic indoor seawater pool, hammams (Turkish baths), saunas, a relaxation room overlooking the sea, and

12 treatment rooms. With numerous treatments and programmes such as rejuvenation, weight loss and anti-stress, they really do cater for everybody’s needs. We started off in the fresh seawater pool. The water in the 124-jet bath is warm and soothing, while the jets themselves are positioned to pummel every area of your body. I particularly enjoyed the underwater massage beds, while my other half decided to swim against the currents. I guess being in a spa he needed to prove his masculinity. After a quick mint-infused steam, it was time for our treatment. A couple’s massage was not actually listed on the treatment menu; however,

I was assured by the manager Magdalena that this could, of course, be arranged. I had personally had enough of my hubby for the time being, so opted for a private Ayurveda massage. Not wanting to miss out he requested the same treatment. This ancient holistic massage is based on Hindu philosophy, which achieves relaxation, well-being and inner harmony using different warm oils. Having heated oil dripped over your body is an experience in itself. After all the stress of my wedding, my back was in knots and rather painful. The heat eased my muscles, allowing maximum benefit from the massage. My therapist finished off by coating my hair in warm oil and steered me towards the hammam, which would allow the oil to nourish my hair. We entered the spa, bickering and generally run down, but left relaxed, glowing and with smiles on our faces. Now it was time to undo all the good work and pig out at the renowned Marbella Club buffet. Well what’s a girl to do? The Marbella Club Tel. 952 822 211 marbellaclub.com

THE OCEAN SPA AT EL OCEANO HOTEL ur next review took us further up the coast to Miraflores. The El Oceano Beach Hotel is an oasis of tranquil luxury, privately owned and operated, where the guests’ comfort and satisfaction is paramount. The Ocean Spa features an indoor heated pool, jacuzzi, swim-spa and steam room, while at the treatment centre you can

O

find top beauty therapists, hairdressers and nail technicians, all of whom are qualified to provide you with a wonderful menu of luxurious treatments. We thought we would treat our head bridesmaid, Heidi, as I had been rather a Bridezilla in the run up to the wedding. With such a vast array of treatments we found it really difficult to choose. I was very impressed with the high tech facials available: crystal clear, oxygen and the nonsurgical face lift Genie to name a few.

I decided on the Elemis Spa Therapy Advanced Anti Ageing Facial. These superior face and eye treatments include a luxurious hand, arm and scalp massage for ultimate relaxation. Heidi had the Guinot Paris Hydradermie, where pure and natural ingredients penetrate into the lower layers of your skin to flush out impurities and hydrate. My husband went against my wishes and opted for a full body massage instead of a facial. (He is looking rather haggard at the moment; he claims he never looked like this before we got married. Humph.) My facial was divine. Most therapists leave the room while your mask gets to work. However, Terri spent this time massaging my hands, wrapping my feet in hot towels and treating me to an Indian head massage. Heidi came out glowing and my husband came out refreshed. After I had come round from my trance-like state of bliss we decided on sampling a few cocktails at the pool bar and treating ourselves to lunch. At El Oceano you can actually swim up to the bar, a feature that got the thumbs up from us. I actually felt like we were in

a scene from Cocktail and boy were the Pina Coladas good. Lunch was served overlooking the ocean and the food was delicious. You must try the chocolate brownie, with a hint of orange. What can I say: a breathtaking setting, superb service and an unforgettable experience. El Oceano Beach Hotel Restaurant and Spa Tel. 952 587 550 oceanohotel.com

You can also use the full business facilities or simply find quiet space to read the paper. The highlight was the stylish Cowshed spa complete with their 100 per cent natural product range. Caribbean Delight For this issue’s honeymoon review, Confeti travelled to the breathtakingly beautiful island of St Lucia. Here the Atlantic Ocean kisses its eastern shore,

88

CONFETI

while the beaches of the west coast owe their beauty to the calm Caribbean Sea. Our trip took us to the south-west coast, home to St Lucia's majestic Pitons, where we stayed for eight days at The Jalousie Plantation, two days at Jade Mountain and one day at Ladera. What did we find? Paradise.

MUST SEE A Tour of the Island Do find time to go on this excursion; it was one of the best experiences of our trip. The tourist board very kindly arranged for Michael to be our tour guide. Michael knew everybody, stopping and waving to people along the way. What is

Anse Chastanet

particularly obvious is how much the St Lucians love their country. If you compliment the island, you compliment them. We travelled through small fishing villages on winding roads to Soufriere, where pastel-coloured houses and the friendly locals all add to the Creole charm of the town. Continuing on to the capital we passed through the rainforest. Here we were lucky enough to see baby parrots taking their first flights and I even held a wild boa constrictor. My partner, however, wouldn’t even get out of the car. Men! Castries market is bustling with vendors selling everything from spices to sarongs. If you like to haggle you will be in your element. Look out for sugared coconut sweets; they became something of an addiction for me.

Sulphur Springs St Lucia volcano is said to be the only drive-in volcano in the world. A walk through the crater takes you past pools of bubbling hot springs which emit sulphur-laden steam. Opt for a tour guide as the history is very interesting. Many people do not realise that the river that runs under the bridge is open for public bathing. Afterwards join in the fun and take a therapeutic sulphur mud bath in the springs located just below the car park. Cake yourself in mud and then let the sun naturally dry you. Head to the small cascading waterfall, naturally heated by the volcano, to rinse off. Sulphur can stain, so be sure to wear an old bathing suit and bring an expendable towel. We were walking around with dirty feet for days; the damn stuff just wouldn’t come off.

Diamond Falls and Mineral Baths (Botanical Gardens) These gardens are not like any other; they boast a wide variety of tropical plant species and feature the stunning Diamond waterfall. We particularly enjoyed the mineral baths (St Lucians say you come out looking 10 years younger), which are fed directly from the dormant volcano

sulphur springs and underground hot springs. I highly recommend paying a little bit extra for a private mineral bath. You are taken to a pretty cabin, where two baths are freshly filled. The very hot water takes some getting used to, but if you alternate between this and the cold shower it is very energising and I came out looking 21 again.

HERE HEAVEN MEETS EARTH

Our first stop was The Jalousie Plantation and, after an hour of having my nose pressed up against the taxi window (so that I wouldn’t miss anything), I was keen – okay, extremely excited – to see where we would be staying for the next eight days. So, was it all I had hoped it would be? You bet it was. Set within over 100 acres (40 hectares) of lush rainforest on the site of an 18th century sugar plantation, lushly landscaped grounds sweep down to a stunning white-sand beach and the glimmering Caribbean Sea. Nestled between St Lucia's most famous landmarks, the Gros and Petit Piton Mountains, it is a place that needs to be seen to be believed. The indulgent, world-class Rainforest Spa, a full PADI dive facility, superb waterfront dining and chic lounges ensure that the St Lucia resort vacation experience is one of sheer bliss.

(do remember neither of us had had much sleep). I had died and gone to heaven All Jalousie’s brand new luxury villas are built in small clusters and are furnished with magnificent four-poster beds, draped in sheer flowing fabrics which billow in the breeze, custom-made furniture in white, flat screen TV and iPod The Villa station, enormous walk-in body We were met by Jalousies shower, claw foot bathtub and director of PR Molly McDaniel and our personal butler Effe (who oversize plunge pool. If you are a fan of wildlife, this is the place for you. Birds are confident and cheeky, occasionally eating out of the palm of your hand. At dusk we would have a daily visit from a pair of mongoose. Also, expect an occasional cat popping in to say hello. The Beach Complimentary shuttle buses take you to and from the beach. The beach itself is

postcard perfect, as imported white sand replaces the volcanic black original. Snorkelling is a must; it transports you to another world. Do, however, listen to the instructions from the dive centre, unlike I did – deciding to go off on my own. I was thinking how pretty the fish swimming next to me was when it opened its mouth to reveal razor-sharp teeth. Thinking maybe I should head back, I

spotted a school of them surrounding me – barracudas. My partner, of course, thought this was hilarious and says that the barracuda gets bigger every time I tell the story. Restaurants All of which are superb. Bayside’s al la carte breakfast is divine. Here you can watch the local fisherman catching your lunch, while trying the fresh juice of the day. Please look out for my adopted three

kittens, Ginger, Squirrel (he has a bushy tail) and Paw Paw (limps). Let’s just say my partner wasn’t too impressed with me feeding them my fillet steak. Well, they needed it more than I did. For the most discerning diners, the Great Room evokes Old World colonial charm while serving up Caribbean-influenced delicacies in candlelit, airconditioned surroundings. The food here is impeccable. I would recommend the soufflé; my partner had it three nights in a row, so that must tell you something. Our Experience On our last day I was nearly in tears; I didn’t want to leave. Who would look after the cats? What about the mongooses? What if I didn’t like the other resorts as much as this one? Jalousie had stolen my heart and showed me a place that I didn’t think could exist. thejalousieplantation.com

Clinging to a ridgeline, at a vertiginous 1,100 feet (335 metres) sits the Ladera resort. The nine villas and 23 suites all have an “open wall”, allowing you to really be at one with nature. On arrival we were greeted with cool, mint-infused hand towels and a refreshing ginger-spiced cocktail. Being the peak of the day, it was greatly appreciated and a fine start for what was to come. After a quick tour we were taken to our room. Deliberately techno free, they are constructed of tropical hardwoods, stone and tile, furnished with 19th century French furniture or replicas, wicker and accessories crafted by local artisans. The private plunge pool, bordered by hefty volcanic rocks and pots of tropical flowers, beckoned – perfect for romantic wallowing. Other highlights were the quirky bathroom with conch shell spouts and taps made from metal fish, the menagerie of wildlife that join you by the pool, and the binoculars and astronomy sky map, perfect for star-crossed lovers.

I was keen to check out the sumptuous pleasures of the Ti Kai Pose Spa. After deciding on the al fresco couple’s massage, I was pleasantly surprised when we were joined by two male therapists. However, the look on my partner’s face showed that he wasn’t as enthusiastic! The massage was divine: a mixture of lavender oils, tropical breeze and birds’ chorus. Highly recommended. Guests of Ladera can enjoy the weekly complimentary manager’s cocktail reception. We were treated to a local art exhibition while sipping fresh coconut milk and rum cocktails out of coconut husks and nibbling on Creoleinspired canapés. A perfect introduction to the evening fare. We were both keen to sample the delights of “Dasheene”, Ladera’s award-wining restaurant. It is renowned throughout the world for its eclectic, innovative cuisine, and guests travel from all over the island to experience the talents of chef Orlando Satchell. Think Carib shrimp marinated in mild

jerk and shadow bennie, then grilled and served on a plantain pancake with seasoning pepper and tamarind vinaigrette; or how about breast of chicken marinated with cinnamon spice, stuffed with plantain mousse on sweet potato Dauphinouise with Lady Labelle sauce. Now if that doesn’t tempt your palette! I would, however, recommend that you chose an evening which is a la carte. After supper you can meander over to the T'cholit Bar, sample one of their lethal Caribbean cocktails and relax to the live music show and, of course, the tree frogs. HE SANCTUARY

We arrived at Jade Mountain by water taxi. Quite an adventure for me. I was rather worried that my Jimmy Choos would get wet but it was all plain sailing! We docked at the 600-acre (240hectare) beachfront resort, Anse Chastanet, and were taken straight up to its sister resort Jade Mountain. Architecturally astonishing and blessed with spectacular views of the Caribbean Sea… it was proprietor Nick Troubetzkoy’s desire to create an experience that would do more than feature the unforgettable view. Individual bridges leading to exceptional infinity pool sanctuaries and rugged stoned-faced columns reaching towards the sky make Jade Mountain one of the Caribbean’s most mesmerising resort experiences. Our personal 24-hour majordomo, Okeda, showed us to our room, explaining that we could call her using our provided Firefly (a mini cell phone) with just about any wish we desired. She talked us through all the little touches that would heighten our experience at Jade, including a daily food package, homemade chocolates, an early evening customised cocktail delivered to our room and a poem placed

nightly on our bedside. As soon as she had left my partner dived straight into the pool and I started working my way through the fridge contents. Typical! In all of the sanctuaries, the fourth wall is open to the views while at the same time allowing for complete privacy. You really are exposed to the elements so bring an eye mask and ear plugs if you want to get any sleep at all. The open floor design allows the bathrooms to become part of the experience. The chromatherapy whirlpool tubs are designed to be enjoyed by one or two persons and are mounted on a pedestal, allowing the best possible panoramic views whilst bathing. The only thing that dampens this romantic ambience is the fact that the toilet is included in the open plan design. So, unless you really want to get to know your new husband, I suggest sending him on the occasional walk or two. We tried all of the restaurants (you can use any Anse Chastanet’s facilities as well). The Tree House is a must for the experience; however, The Jade

Club is a once in a lifetime dining experience. The menu changes daily, with most of the fresh ingredients sourced from the hotel's Emerald Estate organic rainforest farm. It is so hard to believe that executive chef Jonathan Dearden is only 24. Creating traditional Creole and Caribbean flavours with a modern twist, he even made a plain salad a sensory delight using unusual ingredients such as edible flowers. We finished the evening with a nightcap on Celestial Terrace,

listening to the haunting sounds of the resident clarinettist and watching for shooting stars. jademountain.com

ONFETI warns about... By Giles Brown

HONEYMOON HORRORS So you got through the ceremony itself, didn’t forget the ring, the best man didn’t reveal your darkest secrets to your new in-laws and you were able to account for all the bridesmaids in that Brian Hanrahan “I counted them all out, and I counted them all back in again” at the Wedding Breakfast the next morning. You may be thinking that’s the hard part out of the way, and all you have to do now is sit back and enjoy your honeymoon. But get those two weeks away together wrong and you might as well have taken your beloved to St Helens than St Barts. Here are a few pointers of places and things to avoid on your honeymoon, so that at least you are on speaking terms on the flight back ...

A

void the obvious places. Paris and Rome may be the European “Cities of Love” but you are more likely to be wedged in between a group of Japanese tourists on one hand and Americans “Doing Europe” on

96

CONFETI

the other at that quaint Left Bank café by the Seine. Even if you both want fun in the sun, somewhere like Miami that's crawling with tourists and kids may not be the most romantic setting for you. Instead, find more remote places that cater to adults.

If you must go to Venice, try to avoid getting ripped off in the restaurants, be prepared to queue for the gondolier behind 8,000 Japanese tourists and make sure you are in the mood for love because after eight in the evening everyone leaves and there is NOTHING else to do than enjoy your hotel room. Trust me. I went several years ago on an assignment with a male photographer and everyone thought he was my “significant other”. I had to curtly inform a group of Americans that crew cut and a baseball cap were my personal style and not a statement of my sexuality, so “F… off!” And if the photos posted on Facebook after Christmas are anything to go by, you want to avoid Thailand. Was I the only person in Marbella who didn’t go to Ko Sumai last year? Conversely, you also want to avoid anywhere that’s known for partying. Go to Amsterdam and you’ll probably come back with hazy memories of coffee shops and “home baked” cakes, and wondering why you’ve got a king size pack of Rizzlas in your handbag. You might have fantasies of emulating Frank, Sammy, Dean and the rest of the Rat Pack at the tables in Vegas, but you are more likely to be surrounded by Frat Boys on a break at the craps tables and zombiefied little old ladies at the slot machines than the cast of “Oceans 11”. And stay away from Ibiza in high season: otherwise you’ll realise when you’re dancing next to an eight-foot drag queen and have been sprayed silver, while your other half is about to take part in the live show at Manumission, that perhaps those little tablets you

were given at the beginning of the evening weren’t aspirin after all. As many of you know, “Danger” is my middle name, but it’s never a good idea to go somewhere that’s completely off the beaten track or has a reputation for lawlessness, political unrest or disease. So as a general rule of thumb that means that places such as Kabul, Gaza and Somalia are definite no nos, and you might want to think twice about Glasgow. You also need to consider local sensibilities. Saudi and Dubai tend to frown on public displays of affection, so that romantic sunset stroll could get both of you flung in the slammer. Things are a little more relaxed across the Straits in Morocco, but don’t even think of Tangier as a honeymoon destination. It would be like going to Dover or Calais. Far better to take the overnight train to fabulous Marrakesh, but a word to the wise if you do. Book a private cabin and make sure you use the loo at the beginning of the journey. By the time you are approaching the outskirts of Marrakesh, “full of local colour” doesn’t do the facilities justice… Conversely, don’t pick a boring destination. Kansas or Strasbourg are hardly places to inflame the passion, though I did chuckle to myself when the then deputy mayor of Marbella went to Moscow on her honeymoon, when the Russians had just started to spend their mega roubles on the Coast. No suspicion of corruption there then. This was the same person who, when asked to explain what the bin bags full of cash buried in her garden were, shrugged and said they were wedding gifts. Avoid going anywhere that either of you grew up in or went to school or university. I’m from Stoke, a place

that nobody in their right minds would want to go to on honeymoon (imagine a place full of people who look like Robbie Williams, Anthea Turner and me and you get a true idea of the horror), but if you grew up in Bath, or went to Oxford, then there can be the temptation to visit old haunts. But it only takes bumping into one old friend and the mention of a previous partner/nickname/incident to ruin your honeymoon. “Stinky! Do you remember that wild time we had with your Estonian ex in the nightclub in Bogota?” is going to take the diplomatic skill of Kissinger to get out of. And whatever you do, do not, I repeat, do NOT, invite your in-laws or other family members along to bond with their new family. The potential for disaster is huge, especially if you married Daddy’s Little Girl. I famously remember one honeymoon that broke two of the above rules, when the happy couple

decided to spend the last few days visiting the family home. A drunken evening ended with the contents of a chamber pot being flung on the glass conservatory roof while the father was making a toast below, and a resulting huge brawl with her brothers. The following morning the groom (no, it wasn’t me, but it was a friend) pawned his wedding ring and flew back! Enjoy your honeymoon. If you make it back and are still together, then you are ahead of the game!

ONFETI declares...

‘‘Have you got the VOW factor!’’ By Natasha Johnson

Your date is set. You’ve booked a venue that will take your guests’ breath away, you have a photographer who’ll capture your dreams and you’ve planned a day that no-one will forget. The invitations have been sent and your dress is locked away in your wardrobe. So it’s safe to say that you’ve taken full ownership of your wedding day. But what about your ceremony and the exchange of your vows – the actual reason for your celebrations? Hands up those of you who have given it as much thought and attention as the rest of your day? Don’t worry if you didn’t raise your hand: you’re probably not alone. The good news is, there is still time, whether your wedding is a month or a year away.

Your day, your way More and more couples are realising they can have just as much control over their ceremony as with the rest of their wedding. Your ceremony is your declaration of your love and commitment to your partner, so why not take the opportunity to say the vows you want to say and to celebrate your union in the way that you want to – whatever type of ceremony you have? Pauline and Sean married in Nerja in the summer of 2009. They knew instantly what type of venue and reception they wanted, but they had no idea they could make important decisions about their ceremony too. After some research they decided on a Humanist ceremony because they believed it best fit their idea of marriage. They were surprised by how much of a say they could have and were especially pleased they could choose their own vows. “We weren’t confident enough to write our own vows but we didn’t want any old vow being said to us, so we were happy that our celebrant gave us some suggestions and let us know that we didn’t just have to stick to the norm,” recalls Pauline.

Putting the wow into your vow Some people still like the idea of saying “I do” in response to a vow read by a celebrant or minister. This doesn’t mean, however, that you can’t choose the vow you’re being asked or at the very least know what it is you’ll be promising to do, beforehand! For couples who want to break away from tradition, the next and possibly the most romantic way to personalise your ceremony is to write your own vows, and you really don’t have to have Shakespeare’s skills to do it either. There is nothing more special than knowing your vows will never be said to, or by, another person ever again – they are truly unique. 98

CONFETI

There is also now a growing trend for couples to say “I do” to a question vow and then pledge their personal vows to each other – a mix of the old and the new. Christine and Andrew married in Antequera in September 2009. They wanted a very personal ceremony and after some encouragement from their wedding celebrant they decided to write their own vows. “I will never forget that feeling of saying my vows to Andrew and him saying his to me. I can’t imagine what our ceremony would have been like if we didn’t write our vows. It made it even more special to know that we were saying things straight from the heart,” says Christine.

I do, I do, I do So you’ve now got your pen at the ready and are raring to go. What’s your next step? Any good celebrant or minister should not only accommodate your wishes but help you to produce intimate and meaningful vows – just ask! And don’t forget your good old friend the internet is also a fantastic resource, not just for vows but ideas for music and readings that you may want to use in your ceremony. There is just one more piece of advice: remind your guests to bring some tissues, as there won’t be a dry eye in the house. Yours included.
