n the one hand, Society Living has become established as the ultimate guide to life on the Costa del Sol. On the other, Beautiful Home is recognised as the Coast’s premier style guide. So, with the market re-inventing itself to prepare for what we all hope – and quietly expect – will be a more positive year, it became clear to us that joining forces was a marriage made in Mediterranean heaven. As the publishers of both magazines, we believed this would be the best way forward to ensure that, in spite of setbacks in the industry over the past year or so, the Costa del Sol could continue to have a quality publication that represents, reflects and reinvigorates the area’s profile. This issue therefore becomes two top magazines in one: with readers enjoying expanded coverage across the wide spectrum of living and working in southern Spain; and advertisers able to take advantage of two distinctive, yet equally discerning and refined, readerships.

From readers who enjoy a good party, who like to stay abreast of latest fashion, health and beauty trends, who relish a superb meal out, who aspire to the finer things in life… to those who are fascinated by décor, architecture and state-of-the-art style. FASHION Naomi Campbell organised an extraordinary fashion show to raise funds for the White Ribbon Alliance, an organisation that helps mothers and babies around the world â&#x20AC;&#x201C; promoting safe pregnancy and childbirth. Funds raised at Fashion for Relief 2010 will go to the women and babies of Haiti, helping to ensure they are at the heart of the heath care system. International jewellery brand Stephen Webster was one of the headline sponsors of the event, with the many celebrities who offered their support wearing his famous creations on the catwalk. Stephen Webster commented that he was very proud to work alongside Naomi to raise vital funds through Fashion for Relief 2010 to help the people of Haiti. Stars including Nicola Roberts of Girls Aloud, Geri Halliwell, Amanda Holden and Alexandra Burke all walked the catwalk to raise funds for the welldeserving cause, while funnymen David Walliams and James Corden brought laughter to the show, posing and even kissing on the catwalk to hilarious applause. QUICK CLIPS Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps, the followup to the 1987 original, has been put back five months by 20th Century Fox. The film was due to hit cinemas on 23 April and rumours suggest the delay came about so the studio can get more publicity by giving the movie its first screening at the Cannes Festival, which starts on the 12th of next month. The original earned MICHAEL DOUGLAS a best actor Oscar in 1987 and the sequel is reportedly set around the recent financial crisis with SHIA LaBEOUF as 16

Movie lines WHAT’S ON SCREEN THIS MONTH… WHAT’S BEING FILMED AT THE MOMENT… AND WHAT’S IN THE PIPELINE… MICKY REYNOLDS LOOKS INSIDE THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF MOVIES Gekko’s (DOUGLAS) latest protégé. CAREY MULLIGAN, JOSH BROLIN, FRANK LANGELLA and SUSAN SARANDON co-star, with OLIVER STONE returning in the director’s role. The film will now be released in the US on 24 September and in Spain two weeks later. There are two projects circling about the Kennedy family, with MATT DAMON portraying Robert F. Kennedy in a film based on the Evan Thomas biography, which shows both the good and bad side of the man who was assassinated in 1963. And STEPHEN SPIELBERG looks set to work on Jackie, which examines the days immediately following the assassination of John F. Kennedy, from his wife’s point-of-view. The ace director/producer has several irons in the fire at the moment including Indiana Jones 5, an untitled George Gershwin project, The Trial of the Chicago 7 (dramatising the trials of protesters at the 1968 Democratic convention in Chicago), the untitled Tintin sequel, an untitled Martin Luther King Jr. project and the story of Abraham Lincoln during the American Civil War. After the success of Alice In Wonderland TIM BURTON has announced he will be making

a 3D adaption of the Addams Family but it will based more on the original 1930s cartoon drawings of Charles Addams rather than the 1960s TV series or the three movies from the 1990s. He is also working on a live action version of his 1984 cult animation Frankenweenie, and MICHAEL CERA (Juno), CHRIS EVANS and BRANDON ROUTH are all on board. And his leading lady in Alice In Wonderland, MIA WASIKOWSKA, has just started work playing the main role in a new ‘‘darker’’ adaption of the CHARLOTTE BRONTE classic romantic novel Jayne Eyre. MICHAEL FASSBENDER (Inglourious Basterds) will play the love interest and they will be supported by JUDI DENCH, SALLY HAWKINS (Happy-GoLucky) and Billy Elliot star JAMIE BELL. The Smurfs, a comic and TV franchise which first came to light over 50 years ago, is being made into a live-action/CGI hybrid movie and several well-known names want in. Live action roles go to NEIL PATRICK HARRIS (Barney from the excellent How I Met Your Mother), JAYMA MAYS (Emma Pillsbury in Glee) and possibly QUENTIN TARANTINO, plus voice-overs from

Wall Street sequel put back five months by film studio HANK AZARIA (The Simpsons), veteran JONATHAN WINTERS, GEORGE LOPEZ and pop star KATY PERRY. Filming starts this month. Another children’s favourite, The Muppets, give their next ‘‘human’’ lead role to another How I Met Your Mother character, JASON SEGEL. This month the Forgetting Sarah Marshall star steps on set for the stoner

comedy Jeff Who Lives at Home as one of two brothers who is a loser. His more successful sibling is The Office (US version) star ED HELMS who, after finishing filming, will start on The Hangover sequel with BRADLEY COOPER, ZACH GALIFIANAKIS, JUSTIN BARTHA, HEATHER GRAHAM and SANDRA BULLOCK, plus EMINEM and BILL GATES as themselves. ROBERT DOWNEY JR. will be spending this summer in London, first of all to film the sci-fi thriller Gravity as an expedition team leader at a remote space station. But he will need to find a new leading lady after ANGELINA JOLIE pulled out to concentrate on Wanted 2 (in which production has now come to a grinding halt). He will then move on to the Sherlock Holmes sequel. SIGOURNEY WEAVER has said she would like to return in her role as Dr. Grace Augustine if JAMES CAMERON (who is to re-release Titanic in 3D) makes his second Avatar movie a prequel. This month she joins the vampire hoards in the romantic horror-com Vamps as the blood-thirsty Queen of New York. This modern-day story finds two young vampires (ALICIA SILVERSTONE and KRYSTEN RITTER) living the good night life until love enters the picture and each has to make a choice that will jeopardise their immortality. The Alien franchise star will also reprise her role as Dana Barrett in Ghostbusters III. Pirates of the Caribbean 4 update – IAN McSHANE (Deadwood) has landed the role of the iconic pirate Blackbeard and the filmmakers are looking for ‘‘young women who can dance and swim...and who have real boobs’’. It has also being revealed that PENELOPE CRUZ will be more of a nemesis to Jack Sparrow rather than a love interest. Meanwhile MR. DEPP and his real life lover VANESSA PARADIS have both signed to work together for the first time in My American Lover, which is about the legendary French feminist philosopher Simone de Beauvoir and her love affair with writer Nelson Algren. The couple travelled through Latin America in 1949, and he was the basis of the character Lewis Brogan in her 1954 novel The Mandarins. Due to both of their working commitments, filming will not start until next year. Sigourney Weaver keen to return for James Cameron's Avatar "prequel"

MOVIE OF THE MONTH IRON MAN 2 Paramount Pictures and Marvel Entertainment have teamed up again for the highly anticipated sequel to their 2008 blockbuster based on the legendary Marvel super hero, Iron Man. ROBERT DOWNEY JR. returns to don the heavy metal suit and JON FAVREAU is also back in both the director’s chair and for his role as Happy Hogan, the bodyguard and chauffeur to our hero. At the end of the original movie wealthy playboy and inventor Tony Stark revealed himself to the world as the high-flying super hero and now he finds himself under pressure from the media and the public to share his technology with the US government – but he is unwilling to divulge the secrets behind the Iron Man armour as he fears the information will fall into the wrong hands. Apart from having to deal with several military big wigs who want in on the action Tony has his hands full with his soon to become nemesis, the Russian inventor Whiplash (MICKEY ROURKE), a corporate rival (SAM ROCKWELL) and an undercover Russian spy, Black Widow (SCARLETT JOHANSSON). With the help of his ever faithful assistant Pepper Potts (GWYNETH PALTROW) and Colonel James ‘‘Rhodey’’ Rhodes, who himself gets suited up as wing man War Machine, our hero must confront all of these new and powerful enemies. Marvel Comics legend STAN LEE once again has a small role and SAMUEL L. JACKSON will also return as The Avengers recruiter Nick Fury. The Avengers franchise will, over the next couple of years, see a super hero alliance form, featuring The Hulk, Giant Man, Wasp, Thor and Captain America. Films for the last two characters are currently in production with CHRIS HEMSWORTH as the mighty warrior, and several names have been linked to carry the shield of Captain America including JON HAMM, CHANNING TATUM, RYAN PHILLIPPE, MIKE VOGEL and CHRIS EVANS. Surprisingly, Iron Man 2 is released in Europe a full week ahead of its first showing on the other side of the Atlantic and fans will be glad to know that plans are already being drawn up for a third film.

Music notes GIGS, GROUPS, GOSSIP... MICKY REYNOLDS BRINGS US UP TO DATE WITH ROCK SNIPPETS FROM AROUND THE WORLD

K broadcasters the BBC have announced that they are considering axing their Radio 6 music station (Sky satellite station 0120). The station plays “alternative” genres of music, including indie, classic rock, punk, northern soul, jazz, funk, hip hop and classic dance. A campaign to save the station has the backing of several well-known artists including DAVID BOWIE, MARK RONSON and LILY ALLEN. Twitter and Facebook both have pages and you can join the petition by punching in Radio 6 on those sites. 18

The GALLAGHER brothers continue to slag each other off big time but LIAM has announced he will be going into the studio soon to record a debut solo single which will be released in October. The line-up for the younger sibling’s post-OASIS venture has yet to be officially confirmed but former band-mates GEM ARCHER, ANDY BELL and drummer CHRIS SHARROCK are favourites to sit in on the recordings. Before that LIAM is planning a range of women’s wear as part of his Pretty Green fashion brand – I bet NOEL will have

something to say about that! And it’s seconds out round two for silly LILY ALLEN and COURTNEY LOVE – after February’s spat at the BRIT Awards the mouthy pair indulged in a four-letter foul-mouthed bust up at the NME Awards where the American told the silly one to go do a sexual act which is impossible to perform. Then both of them traded insults on Twitter – this isn’t over by a long chalk! On 8 April KURT COBAIN’s widow is in court to try to get access to the couple’s 17-year-old daughter, FRANCES BEAN, who has a

restraining order against her mother. She has been living with Kurt’s mother and his sister since last year – can you believe the NIRVANA singer has been dead 16 years this month! COBAIN’s former band-mate DAVE GROHL has announced his main band FOO FIGHTERS are finishing their hiatus and will go back into the studio after the summer. Before that he will release an album with his THEM CROOKED VULTURES project, which also features LED ZEPPELIN guitarist JOHN PAUL JONES and QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE main man JOSH HOMME. ROBBIE WILLIAMS’ hopes of singing again with TAKE THAT took another knock-back after the band put their recording sessions on ice while MARK OWEN undergoes rehab. He was due to lay down his vocals but now it’s not clear if the ex-band member will be invited to re-join them once they go back into the studio, as GARY BARLOW is said not to be 100 per cent sure it’s a good idea. NATALI GERMANOTTA, who is the 17-year-old sister of LADY GAGA, is to launch her own career and is currently working with a vocal coach in her bid for stardom. BABY GAGA (as she may be called) got the bug after making a brief cameo appearance in big sister’s Telephone video and sitting in on studio recordings. Meanwhile LADY GAGA is hoping to take the 3D revolution to the next level with her pending tour featuring lots of visual effects. The singer gave away a set of 3D glasses with the release of her The Fame Monster album package last December, along with a message saying they would be useful for “things happening soon”. She is also in talks to feature in a future QUENTIN TARANTINO movie as an assassin. The rollercoaster relationship with AMY WINEBOTTLE and her husband took yet another twist when he said he will re-marry her as long as she sorts out her drinking and drug habits. Maybe she should re-release her old hit but change the words: “He says I have to go to rehab but I said no, no, no”. And we will leave you with the news that SUSAN BOYLE, who is moving to London, is looking for a man – run away!

call it the “turning point month”. We were probably one of the first real estate companies to feel the downturn, but also one of the first to feel the upturn. And there were definite signs of that in March. It was all very positive and with Easter on our doorstep, and if we continue to have this good weather, we should have a great summer. It is already a better year for business than 2009. Easter will be a key measure of how the rest of the year is likely to shape up. I hear that a lot of other businesses are reporting sales as well, and even car sales are up 46 per cent on 2009. During a meeting with staff last month, I was pleased to announce that the Sotheby’s International Realty franchise in the UK had been sold to a very large company. In all they have about 1,000 offices, and 11 of them will be trading under the name Sotheby’s. Until now there had only been one office in the UK, in New Bond Street. They have expanded in Germany, Czech Republic, Portugal, Italy and Greece, so it really is becoming a worthwhile network. The Rotary Club of Marbella, of which I am president this year, hosted a conference by former Minister for Defence Eduardo Serra, who spoke about the world strategic panorama and Spain’s own prospects. Like other conferences I have attended lately, it was all very optimistic. In

fact, this is definitely what I smell in the air, and all these positive conferences serve a useful purpose in counteracting the sometimes more negative news in the press, which can be a little slow in reflecting current moods and trends. Obviously, if you just look at the cold hard statistics, the press is right, but it’s not always that black and white. A lot of people, for example, made money on the stock market last year. Here in Marbella, we have been given sole agency rights to an apartment building in San Pedro, well-positioned near the beach, with accessible prices, and an on-site office if people would like to come and visit. It just shows, as I mentioned before, that the property market is turning. I was in Cairo recently for a wedding, and I spoke to many of the Egyptian guests who said they would like to come this summer. So that could be a new market opening up. Cairo was absolutely magnificent: the city’s treasures, the museums, a boat trip on the Nile with a wonderful sunset. The only negative part was the traffic, absolutely chaotic. They toot their horns more than in any city I’ve ever been! The wedding celebrations were held over three days, with intimate dinners for family and close friends on the first two nights then the wedding banquet itself. There were 2,500 guests

– must have been nearly all of Cairo’s social set! – and they even had film crews, and four cranes, producing simultaneous projections of the guests on a mega screen. All the ladies were dressed up beautifully and showing off fantastic jewellery. The food was mostly western-style, but the setting, in a huge marquee, was lavishly exotic and traditional, and they had the most beautiful flower arrangements I’ve ever seen. While in Egypt, we went to Luxor and the Valley of the Kings. It’s incredible that after 3,000 to 4,000 years the temples and sculptures are still intact, in almost perfect condition. Back home, I went to a very nice concert by Amigos de la Musica in Hotel El Fuerte. It featured a performance by Dúo Amadeus, Marc Grauwels on the flute and Thomas Bloch playing a very unusual organ made of glass, which originates from the 16th century. He is apparently one of only two musicians in the world who plays the instrument; he has to wet his fingers to play the keyboards. In a special event at the Hotel Don Pepe, their Calima restaurant’s Michelin-star chef Dani García was honoured by Marbella Town Hall as one of its “ambassadors for Marbella”. Dani also has a very trendy and successful new tapas bar, or “gastro-bar” in Puerto Banús, La Moraga Ibérica, and is opening in international airports, which is all good news. In fact, there are other luxurious dining establishments opening as well, which just goes to show that people are betting on the future of Marbella. I attended a very interesting lunch for businesswomen in Marbella, where Carmen Gurruchaga was the guest speaker; and I made an address to pupils at the Swan’s school, to talk about my experiences and how to become a realtor. A couple of the children asked all the right questions, so who knows…perhaps some realtors of the future! As we have an office in Madrid, I visit quite frequently, and on my last trip my friend Mae invited me to a lovely cocktail reception for an exhibition of Italian jewellery. It’s a good time to meet up with friends. I was delighted to meet Paloma Gómez Borrero, who is Radio Cope’s correspondent at the Vatican, and I hope to be able to bring her for a conference at Rotary. As a Rotarian, one can go to any of the Rotary Club meetings around the world and, whilst in Madrid, I attended the one in the Ritz Hotel. Diego Merry del Val, author of El Súbdito de la Zarina, gave a

conference at our club in Marbella – very interesting. FashionVilla organised a great gala with Moulin Rouge dancers and a beautiful singer from Barcelona. Antje, also a Rotarian, made sure that part of the proceeds went to our international campaign to eradicate Polio Plus, which is also supported by the Bill Gates Foundation. In 1988, when the World Health Assembly launched a Global Polio Eradication Initiative, wild poliovirus was endemic in more than 125 countries. Now only four countries, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria, still need vaccines. Ninety nine per cent of Polio Plus has been eradicated. Coming up this month is another very important event in Marbella for Rotary International. It’s the general assembly of District 2203, which takes in Andalucía, Murcia, the Baleares, Valencia, Ceuta and Melilla, and will involve new presidents and secretaries from the district’s 64 clubs. Many of the people coming will not have been to Marbella before, so it is a great promotion for the area. The governor-elect, Pedro Valenzuela, is from Sevilla but loves Marbella and has a second home here. With winter over, and no more rain, everyone is much happier and enjoying the sun. In fact, you could almost say: back to normal! Sales are on the rise, especially in the Marbella area. We have great opportunities and buyers are taking advantage of it. here the original KZ1 was a very pure shape, this latest version has unashamed trackday leanings, with a front splitter and large rear wing providing significant downforce over the front and rear axles. The drag coefficient is 0.32, still impressive for a supercar, where aggressive styling usually takes precedence over aerodynamic drag. A car’s interior should reflect its exterior. Simple and modern with no retro clichés or carryover switchgear from mass production cars, the KZ1’s interior design is supported by the top quality materials like fine leather and carbon fibre that are so crucial to both the eyes and the fingertips. The reason that the Ascari KZ1 looks and feels so professionally crafted is down to the fact that former specialist oil drilling equipment king Klaas Zwart made up his mind to do things properly, and has deep enough pockets to put serious money where his mouth is.

Hiring the best people in the industry, he has well-known ex-Lotus engineer David Minter on his payroll, along with a team of world-class people who cut their teeth in Britain’s race industry. And as with so many carmakers, big and small, Ascari employed the services of Lotus to finesse the ride and handling of the KZ1. The KZ1R LM I am driving today is the fourth variation on the basic KZ1. The second was the KZ1R trackday version, while the third was the wide-bodied A10 that took the lap record at the BBC Top Gear test track in 2007. Although it is superficially similar to the original KZ1 and KZ1R, the KZ1R LM has many upgrades developed for the Ascari A10, plus the wheel arch extensions and spoilers from the GT3 race version. Because of this, the genes of this car are more motorsport derived than the original road car, and Ascari are promoting it as a street legal club racer. “It is a typical car for our club members,”

Klaas Zwart explained. “A client might come to our race academy, race in GT3 and then buy the KZ1R LM as a trackday car that can also be driven everyday. Of course you don’t have to use it on track, and some customers will simply drive it on the road as they would a Ferrari or Lamborghini.” The KZ1 is constructed from carbon-fibre panels around a carbon-fibre centre tub. While this flat-bottomed supercar was originally built at the Ascari factory in Banbury, a stone’s throw from Prodrive, assembly has now been moved to Spain, and occupies a floor of the workshop/car park facility at the Ascari Race Resort. Even though the original KZ1 from 2004 weighed just 1,330kg, Klaas wanted the powerto-weight ratio to be comparable to big league supercars. So 520bhp became the target figure for the BMW motor in road trim with the 1,350kg KZ1R LM, which is lighter than the Ferrari F430 and Lamborghini Gallardo.

The BMW M-Power V8 is mounted amidships for a 46/54 front/rear weight distribution. The stock M5 motor has 400bhp at 6,600rpm with 369 lb ft at 3,800rpm. Tuned by a UK race engine specialist, the KZ1’s V8 has high-lift cams, gas-flowed cylinder-heads, bespoke intake and exhaust systems and a remapped ECU. Thus modified, the BMW motor now pumps out 520bhp at 7,500rpm with 540Nm of torque at 6,500rpm. The Ascari version of this quad-cam V8 has also been dry-sumped, which drops overall height by four inches (10 centimetres), benefiting the centre of gravity. This dry sump swallows nine litres of oil, 2.5 litres more than the M5 motor. However, the new intake manifold is taller, so the package ends up the same height as the stock BMW motor. At the other end of the combustion process, the unique stainless steel exhaust is ceramic coated and shielded with Darchem motorsport grade heat reflective material to w w w. s o c i e t y l i v i n g m a g a z i n e . c o m

cut down heat in the engine bay. A 90-litre racing fuel cell sits in the chassis between the cabin and engine bay. The engine is mated to the same six-speed CIMA gearbox used on the Pagani Zonda. But, where the M5 has a dual-mass flywheel weighing a massive 23kg, the Ascari flywheel weighs just 8kg, and transfers the V8 motors grunt via a twin-plate organic AP Racing clutch. Ascari claim that the slightly lighter and more powerful KZ1R slingshots to 60mph (100kph) in 3.7 seconds, to 100mph in 8.2 seconds and on to around 200mph. The engine and gearbox, with bespoke bell housing, are mounted on a steel subframe. The race style double wishbone suspension uses steel arms mated to machined alloy uprights, Intrax height adjustable coil-overs with helper springs, and Intrax race dampers with separate reservoirs. The anti-roll bars are three-position adjustable in front, with no rear bar. Massive AP Racing 362/32mm cross-drilled vented discs with six-pot calipers in front and 330/26mm with four-pot calipers with Lucas ABS are connected to a hydraulic booster rather than a servo. The 9.0J x 19 and 12.0J x 20inch Dymag three-piece lightweight wheels are shod with 255/35ZR19 and 335/30ZR20 Michelin Pilot Sport tyres. These British-made wheels have magnesium alloy centres and carbon-fibre outer rims, and are the lightest road legal wheels money can 40

buy. Curious to know just how light these wheels are compared with forged alloy equivalents, I put them on the scales in the workshop. At 7.0kg and 9.25kg respectively, they are about 20 per cent lighter than a forged wheel, and up to 50 per cent lighter than a conventional cast alloy wheel. First impressions are of a very fast, civilised and highly driver-focused car. The cabin is a bright and airy place to conduct business from. The driving position is good for someone of average height, and you can heel and toe perfectly.

Power delivery is smooth and strong and, thanks to a moderately weighted clutch and balanced controls, the car is easy to drive in traffic. Another plus is the relatively comfortable ride even on country roads. Both primary and secondary ride are good for this type of car, and it is obvious that the significant structural stiffness lets the suspension do its work properly. For some reason, many manufacturers seem unable to get their power assisted steering right. But Ascari have succeeded, and just the right amount of assistance delivers good feel

and linear reactions at all speeds without a hint of turn-in nervousness. Ascari benefits from having its own 5.4km long, 26-corner racetrack near Ronda where I could give the car its head. Less weight and more power is always a good thing and, with the lusty V8 growling away behind your head, the acceleration punches you hard in the kidneys. Unlike a turbocharged car of similar power and weight, which would be trying hard to break traction at the slightest provocation, the LM is wonderfully linear and progressive in its power delivery. Strong and unrelenting from just above idle to cut-out, the big V8 is deceptively smooth. With your race helmet blocking out a lot of the engines rumbling decibels, the reference points to your pace come more from the rate at which the scenery is hurtling past outside. Coming off the gas and going hard on the anchors as I approach the tricky uphill chicane at the end of the main straight, I feel the big AP Racing brakes squeezing every ounce of retardation from the huge vented discs. These race-grade brakes proved to be fade-free even though I pushed them to the limit in a series of flying laps. Equally impressive is the superb handling and grip. Before I took the wheel myself, Klaas drove me around the track at full pelt. Although the LM was wearing road rubber, I was astonished by the sheer mechanical grip the car could generate, and felt that it was not that far behind a Porsche GT3R on slick tyres! This is down to the fantastic chassis balance and finely honed geometry that allow the car to eke every last bit of mechanical grip out of the fat Michelins. I know this track well, and was thus able to concentrate on what the car was doing. The left hand hairpin at the far end of the circuit is always a tough one for any car, as a too high approach speed results in the front end washing out in understeer. Despite being on road rather than Cup tyres, the front-end of the KZ1R LM has very good mechanical grip here, especially if you trail brake in to settle the nose. The strong torque of the big V8 means you can use third gear although, if you want to play hero and powerslide round, second gear is there for the asking. The Ascari is very user friendly on the limit for a mid-engined car. Its exquisite balance means there are no nasty surprises in store if you decide to hang the tail out on the exit of a bend. Breakaway is progressive and easy to catch, or hold if you are so inclined.

As a driver’s car, and an object d’art, the Ascari KZ1R LM is a stunning achievement for a small specialist manufacturer. Its straight line go is up there with the major league supercars, while its handling and grip and general usability are a wake-up call to the big names in the business. On the minus side, the cabin is tight for largerframed drivers, but that is a problem with midengined supercars in general. The only real downside is the price. If you look at the KZ1’s aesthetics and its dynamic abilities, it can hold its head up high against cars like the Ferrari F430 and Lamborghini Gallardo, perceived to be in the same class on looks and physical size. If it were similarly priced, in fact even if it were 20 per cent more, it would still be a good proposition. However, due to the amount of money Klaas has poured into the project and the 1,000 man-hours build time for each car, the

KZ1 comes with a €350,000 price tag, and that makes it a tough sales proposition. in the Andalucian hills, 11 kilometres from the ancient Spanish town of Ronda, 5.425 kilometres of high grip tarmac winds its way through picturesque countryside with a backdrop to die for. The Ascari Race Resort is one of the finest racetracks ever built. The brainchild of Klaas Zwart, who sold his offshore oil drilling equipment company for rather a lot of money in the late 1990s, the track is longer than most international Formula One tracks, and can be divided into sections so that different activities can be run simultaneously. There is also a skidpan that can be wetted down for drivers to practise drifting, and an off-road course behind the track. The fully equipped workshop that is part and parcel of the resort is staffed by experienced race mechanics from the UK. The spacious 300-car garage and workshop allows Race Resort members to store their road and racecars in a perfect environment. Here, pride of place in Klaas Zwart’s personal racecar collection goes to two late ‘90s exGerhard Berger Ferrari F1 cars. Unlike most racetracks, the hustle and bustle is absent, and blaring tannoys and gaudy advertising billboards are out. The clubhouse is built in Spanish hacienda style from the finest materials and, as the track is so long and is only very occasionally used for racing, the sound of cars screaming past seldom disturbs your rest as you lounge on the patio or by the pool with a cold drink. Although he originally built this petrol head’s dream playground to indulge his passion for cars and motorsport, Klaas quickly realised the commercial possibilities of his track. An off-road course was quickly added to the facilities and, eventually, a small but spectacular six-star resort spa hotel will be the final component in his plans to make the 42

Ascari Race Resort a car enthusiast’s heaven. In addition, Ascari Race Resort offers a unique membership opportunity to hardcore trackday fanatics. For a one-off fee of €150,000 (you get a €50,000 discount if you buy a KZ1) these members will be guaranteed 52 track days a year. Membership is capped at 500 and, just like a golf or country club, you can resell your ticket if you so wish. The race academy with its professional instructors can take someone with the right talent from basic right up to LMP sports prototype or Formula One over a period of time, so there is every incentive to keep coming back. Klaas’s passion for cars goes far beyond the bounds of most very wealthy enthusiasts. More than just a collector, Klaas is also a driver. A distinguished “gentleman driver”, Klaas has won the Euroboss 3000 Championship three times. In earlier days, he also competed in the TVR Tuscan series, Ferrari Maranello Championship, British GT and 24 Hours of Le Mans. He entered the 1995 Le Mans 24 Hours with his own team running their Ascari Ecosse GT, and currently runs an Ascari KZ1 in the GT3 class of the Spanish GT Championship. or Saud Rifat shooting a fashion image isn’t just a case of pointing the camera and clicking. He cares a great deal about the end result and wants to make an impact with every image. His passion for photography started at 14 when he was given his first camera by his parents, though he never dreamed he would end up a fashion photographer. His career began in audio-visual production but he did not have the drive and excitement needed, so he returned to his camera and decided to try photography to see where it could take him. Fashion photography wasn’t his first choice – he tried shooting architecture, landscapes and events – but what ultimately inspired him most was fashion. Saud always works with a team, which means getting great pictures is about working together and producing an end result with people who care as much about the job as he does. Fashion photography has always fascinated him, noticing how big names such as Mario Testino achieved their shot and wondering how they did so. His inspiration comes from looking at the work of famous photographers such as Patrick Demarchelier and Peter Lindbergh and seeing how they have captured their own style and can choose what they want to shoot. Asked what his career highlight has been so far, Saud immediately says his best job was a GHD shoot: preparing, casting in Madrid and Marbella, and actually shooting the job was the best moment of his professional life. To Saud taking a picture is all about capturing the image, the moment he presses the button on the camera and captures exactly what he is aiming to – knowing that, right then and there, he has secured the image he was looking for. This is what makes him want to be

better. He knows that, with photography, there are no limits; his work can always keep taking him higher. His ultimate goal? A Vogue fashion shoot with the prestigious Dior brand, which would take him around the world, but he adds that he will always call Marbella home. Finally, he notes that he would like to thank his parents for supporting him.

eng Shui and Feng Shui gardening has become increasingly popular in the western world. Feng Shui is the ancient Chinese Art of Placement, or the art of creating or finding harmony in your surroundings. Feng Shui, or Wind and Water, is based on the understanding of the flow of energy, or chi, throughout one’s inner and outer life. A Feng Shui garden should follow nature’s lead as much as possible with the primary aim of creating harmony and balance. Pleasurable winding walking paths are at the heart of the Feng Shui garden and are the vital conduits of chi. Paths can lead to sunny, pleasant seating areas surrounded by shrubs and aromatic herbs. Meandering paths can be

edged with delicate creeping plants that balance the yang energy of stone, concrete or brick. If you already have straight paths, then allow plants to grow over them so the chi can circulate freely around them. A garden should have living spaces that provide a haven for friends and family to relax and enjoy the sunshine and gentle breeze. Trees or large shrubs will provide privacy and protection at the back of the garden. Balance is created by mixing different sizes, shapes and colours of plants so that no one species is overwhelmed by another An arbor is a wonderful way to add height to your garden, yard, entry way or patio. If you have a large concentration of plants that are shorter,

such as hostas or other smaller flowering plants, an arbor can add the height that your yard or garden may be currently missing. They can also work as a transition point between ground plants, trees, and buildings. Plants of course are at the very heart of every garden; however in a Feng Shui garden the combining of plants with foliage, and contrasts in colour and texture, not only looks appealing but will help to balance the yin and yang energies. Plants can help to create visual and acoustic privacy, softening the effects of negative chi. Flowering and fruit shrubs attract very beneficial chi and invite living creatures into your garden. blossom and share their fruit. Small shrubs are best placed in the southern area of your Feng Shui garden. Be sure not to block any of your entry ways or windows with plants. Planting purple and red bougainvilleas attracts wealth as these colours represent prosperity and are very important Feng Shui colours. Shrubs which can be useful for their positive influence in the Feng Shui garden include camellia and roses; however, there are many others such as forsythia, shrubby clematis and rhododendron. Any style of garden can incorporate Feng Shui principles, from the informal to the symmetrical formal gardens. The key is placement and balance of yin and yang energies. This can be done with colour, plants, trees, shrubs and water features. To

make the perfect Feng Shui garden, plant a mix of flowers, shrubs and trees that will delight the senses for all four seasons. Plants should be healthy, lush and well-trimmed. The shapes should balance each other to encourage good Feng Shui for your home and its occupants. To encourage wealth, luck and prosperity grow healthy plants in the south-east of the garden. The presence of soft foliage can be balanced with the yang of natural stone and rock. Place some stone ornaments and terracotta plant containers for a touch of Earth energy. By using a variety of materials in a garden, you can bring about the kind of effect you want. Groves and vines are very yang and can mark seating areas and garden borders. If you have

garden walls and fences, you can use them to support climbing plants and flowers. This adds colour and height to a garden. With planning, these plants can soften sharp edges at corners, thereby reducing harmful “cutting chi”. You can create a structured effect by growing a mixture of flowering and evergreen shrubs up pergolas. A rustic wooden bench looks perfect in a country garden. If it is placed in the east it will help to boost the wood element. An outdoor deck acts as an extension of your home. It serves as a transition point between the home and the garden, providing a flat surface where chairs and tables can be placed, as well as an outdoor grill. However, make sure it doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t overpower the rest of the outdoor space; some areas are only large enough for a small water feature. Free-form ponds look very natural in a garden and should be filled with interesting aquatic plants; goldfish in a pond are very lucky in Feng Shui but make sure the water circulates constantly. People seek out water all seasons of the year and times of the day. A winter at a tropical beach, a sunset or moonlit walk alongside the ocean, or the sun reflected upon a lake or river. Then there is the great feeling of jumping in a body of water, swimming, wading or just getting your feet wet. A pool or spa can bring a piece of this back to your own home and yard. With a pool, you can swim as often as weather and time permit. What better way to relax and get exercise than in your own swimming pool or spa. A water fountain is a wonderful way to add an entirely new dimension to both your home and garden. Outdoors you will be able to recreate the sound of a bubbling brook, stream or waterfall. Indoors, a water fountain will help to bring the water element and nature into your home environment. There are even small kits available that include everything you need to create your pond or fountain. 70

trend espaĂąa ILLUMINATION Night-time has its own look and feel to it. The stars are lit, the moon is out and shadows are cast in all different angles. It can be nice to get outside when it is dark to enjoy the stillness that comes with the night, or to have a party. Lanterns and torches will greatly add to the ambience of the night. They will help to illuminate your garden, yard, porch or patio in the natural glow that only a flame can produce.. Not only will the lantern add to the ambience at night, but lanterns also make beautiful accent pieces on the patio or garden when not lit. Many granite lanterns have an Asian look and feel to them, and they can be found in all shapes and sizes. The warm glow of candles always adds to the ambience of your garden and brings in more positive yang energy. You can also use candles that are designed to keep mosquitoes out of your environment at night. Hanging lanterns from hooks or trees is especially potent when placed in the south of any garden, as this particular area symbolises the Fire element. You can create more yang (masculine) energy by using garden lights to illuminate dark areas. Lights represent the Fire element and give out positive yang energy. Small lights placed anywhere in your Feng Shui garden create good fortune by adding positive yang chi. By cleverly using lighting you can effectively harness Earth luck, thereby enhancing and activating family and relationship luck. Soft and subtle garden lighting placed beneath foliage or behind rocks can add to the ambience of your garden and enhance positive yang energy. If the areas you plan on using lighting receive plenty of sun during the daytime, try using solar-powered lighting that automatically turns on when the sun sets. You can bring about major improvements to your garden Feng Shui by the use of lights to energise good areas of the garden and offset problem areas.

GARDEN ACCESSORIES AND ORNAMENTS Once you have resolved the layout and planning of your Feng Shui garden you need to consider what accessories you can add to enhance it. You can create a unique and personal extension of your indoor living space by adding outdoor accents to your garden, deck, patio, garden and yard. Outdoor accents fall into many different categories, such as: lighting, water features, yard ornaments, outdoor fireplaces, bird baths and houses, garden stepping stones, wind chimes, etc. Bird feeders can bring a lot of joy not only to the birds but also to their human friends as well. The song of a bird is a beautiful melody to hear, and a bird feeder will quickly become a gathering place for birds of all shapes and sizes. Consider incorporating features to attract birds to your garden. Placing a bird bath or feeder nearby can help achieve this. A bird feeder should be placed near trees and other objects that provide the birds with some natural cover and nesting areas. Once you begin feeding the birds, be sure to make sure there is always birdseed in the feeder, and that it is kept clean to prevent the spread of disease. Tables that have large round edges are best as they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t give off cutting energy. Chairs with flowing curves will enhance the flow of chi. Big round terracotta or earthenware pots symbolise the Earth element and can be the focus point of your garden. Place them in the south-west (Marriage and Romance) and northeast (Education and Knowledge) areas. Vegetables can even be used in an ornamental manner, adding colour and dimension to non-traditional areas. Outdoor living not only encompasses the garden plants themselves, but also includes how they are incorporated, what type of landscaping is employed and your choice of accents. Backyards are no longer just for a barbecue grill, but now also include fire pits and full-sized outdoor cooking spaces complete with stone ovens for outdoor baking. Your yard is an extension of your living space, and it can be decorated and designed with as much detail and planning as the interior of your home.

Bells and chimes are very popular in yards and gardens of all cultures and can be found indoors, outdoors and as transitions between the two. Wind chimes have come along ways over the years. It is now possible to purchase chimes that are tuned to your favorite classical song, Chicago blues scales, Asian Temple Bells and nearly every other scale you can imagine. Bells are also a wonderful addition to an outdoor environment that are often overlooked. However, once placed in a yard or garden, bells can quickly become a focal point. A perfect example of this are the designs by world famous Tom Torrens. These consist of very appealing bells and gongs that will make quite the statement wherever they are placed.

OUTDOOR FURNITURE When you decide to add outdoor furniture to extend your living space to your deck or garden, there are many considerations when making a choice. Outdoor furniture that is both functional and beautiful is becoming increasingly popular; out is in. Pieces are not only more stylish than ever but also more finely made, and more allweather materials are available to craft a whole new range of looks. Unconventional styles and innovative materials will add personality to an outdoor space. Patio furniture comes in a variety of shapes and sizes. Common materials include rattan, resin, wicker, metal and woodâ&#x20AC;Ś chaise lounge chairs, loveseats, coffee tables and patio tables with umbrellas. Exclusive interview Laurence LlewelynBowen What is your signature style and why? I’d love to say my signature style was diversity, which is something I’ve really tried to prove through the book. That actually it’s an attitude, it’s an approach, it’s a commitment to full-fat decorating, whether that’s in a modern context or a traditional context. It’s all about doing it with a lot of amusement and commitment, with a voluptuous enjoyment of being able to change an interior. What is popular at the moment? What’s popular is makeover; being able to make a quick, easy difference to the way that your room looks. We’ve got rather bogged down for too many years in these big project based schemes which were about taking walls off and replacing them with glass. Actually the pure simple enjoyment of being able to spend Saturday afternoon with two and a half litres of brightly coloured emulsion to change your living room in time to open a bottle of wine for that night’s Dancing On Ice is where we’re going back to. Key future trends? Definitely colour. The future is bright: it is orange. And purple…and green…and turquoise…and teal. Colour is an incredibly important physiological tool in terms of wellbeing and there’s nothing more off colour making than off colours like beige. w w w. b e a u t i f u l h o m e m a g a z i n e . c o m

It’s anoraks, it’s caravans called Camelot, its bed and breakfast, its Tupperware containers full of oatmeal. Your wallpaper designs are best-sellers… what looks should we be going for in 2010? Still the nation needs to understand that the best thing you can do with wallpaper is wallpaper every wall in your room. The feature wall is a good starting point but actually a decent wallpaper with a good pattern repeat and a pronounced contrast acts like camouflage even in small rooms, and helps disguise the corners. The minute you disguise the corners the minute the room starts feeling bigger. You are known for your distinctive dress sense. Tell us your favourite designers and why? I always wear William Hunt; he understands the fuller figured middle-aged gentleman in a way like no other – and Geoffrey West does my boots. Gresham Blake in Brighton does a lot of my country tweeds. You have mentioned in the past that your family all have very colourful personalities… please elaborate, and how do you all manage to get on so well? I think that the thing that keeps the family together is our noisiness, our loudness, our overthe-topness. I think it would be very difficult for one member of our family to survive if they were of a quiet or modest, self-deprecating personality. We’d eat them alive!

You might remember some of these design disasters such as Scottish tartan walls for a Royal Welsh Fusilier and his family or the heartrending sobs from a mother of young children when Anna Ryder Richardson decorated her bedroom walls with erotic French unmentionables. “Trust me – I’m a designer” said Lawrence Llewelyn Bowen during an episode of Changing Rooms and many did and rued the day. But many others were overjoyed when their new rooms were revealed. Design was now open to everyone and the home makeover trend boomed and is still popular in one form or another today. But has the television experience of multiple home improvement shows enhanced our opinion of interior designers or diminished it? Can we trust designers with our homes? The answer is a resounding yes! Creating beautiful rooms is only part of an interior designer’s work; the main part of their work involves many practical and technical considerations that affect comfort, function and safety such as lighting, acoustics, space planning, organisation and storage, scale, the accommodation of special needs, fire safety and compliance with local building codes. Interior projects can include new construction, renovation, historic restoration and model homes. Specialty areas within the home might include the kitchen, bathroom and home theatre, as well as office and fitness areas. When you hire an interior designer, you get the benefit of an experienced professional who can solve problems, help you avoid costly mistakes and, most importantly, create an attractive, affordable space designed specifically to meet your lifestyle needs. Interior designers are creative, imaginative and artistic but they are also professionals and are disciplined, organised

and skilled business people who are there to offer you a service. So how do you go about finding a designer to suit you, your needs and your budget? Personal referrals are the best way to find a design expert. You should aim to interview at least three designers – many will offer first consultations free of charge, which means you can dip your toe in the water without risk. Make sure that you do your research before you meet with a designer, such as looking at their websites to see if their styles suit your taste. Make a list of questions and don’t be afraid to ask about anything that is unclear; after all, you will be employing this person to undertake work on one of your most important assets – your home. So what can you expect during this first meeting? Your designer should, by talking to you and looking at your existing environment, be able to diagnose and pinpoint your style. He or she should also ask you about your family, your pets and your hobbies as well as whether you entertain at home and have overnight guests. You in turn can show pictures of rooms you have seen on the internet or in magazines. You need to let the designer know if they are working around existing furniture or whether you want them to source all you furniture and fabric needs etc. A discussion about costs, timelines and your budget are essential before you give your designer the go ahead. One of the most important assets you have is your instinct. Do you like this person? Is he or she listening to you? You have to be comfortable enough with the designer to sit down on a regular basis for a coffee. By learning about you the designer is putting together the first building blocks of the design. any number of ways: a sample of fabrics and pictures of furniture is one option; sketches and swatches of fabric to discuss is another. Many designers put together a mood board to show you different colours and textures. Whichever style of presentation the designers choose, find out in advance what you will be paying for it and what happens if you don’t like what you see. Many designers will “go back to the drawing board” free of charge or at a nominal fee until you’re happy because they rely on your happiness of a job well done for future referrals. Interior designers have the training and resources to explore all themes and design options. They can often help you see a room in a whole new light, just by the addition of some built-in furniture, a new colour scheme, a different curtain design, or by re-arranging the furniture. A designer is adept at combining elements in total harmony with each other while 86

staying within the guidelines of your initial brief. A good designer will nudge you further along your chosen road but will never impose their taste on your environment. Designers are there to work for you and to help you achieve your design goal. If you’re not happy with something, always remember you can say no. Check that the designer you choose has a defined fee structure and make sure you get this in writing. Your budget should be the amount that you are happy to spend to achieve the result that you desire. Ensure that the designer knows your decoration budget from the start and be clear about whether the design fees are included in this budget, or are paid on top. It often helps to check the feasibility of your budget by allocating portions of it to different areas of expense. For a simple living room refurbishment you might allocate the budget into seven areas; for instance, floor covering, wall covering, curtains,

The more direct and specific you are, the easier it will be for the designer to successfully meet your expectations

furniture, light fittings, accessories and designer’s fee. Allocating percentages to your project allows you to see what you can afford and are willing to spend on each area of the redecoration. Give the designer the budget breakdown and as much specific information as possible about your expectations within that budget; for instance, If you want pure silk wall covering and your budget doesn’t run to it maybe you can you compromise somewhere else without spoiling the desired outcome. Bear in mind that the designer is not responsible for the costs of other professional services. If the designer charges extra for other services – such as reviewing plans or attending meetings with an architect or contractor – these should be listed as well, both by type and rate. You are paying for the designer’s design expertise; ability to source from trade – only suppliers of furniture, fabrics and accessories;

and the time they save you from having to organise and supervise builders, painters, joiners, plumbers, etc. WORKING WITH A DESIGNER Be a good client and not the client from hell. Designers love their work and hope you will take your responsibilities as a client seriously. Working with an interior designer involves some give and take. The key to a successful project outcome is good communication. The more direct and specific you are, the easier it will be for the designer to successfully meet your expectations. Remember, if you delegate the decisionmaking to the designer, you are agreeing to live with those decisions. Decide beforehand where you are willing to compromise and where you are not. Keep notes of your discussions with the designer and confirm any and all instructions, decisions or changes before they are acted on.

If you agree to make changes to the contract, always make sure to put them in writing and have them signed and dated by both parties. Maintain a folder with copies of all plans and contracts, receipts, invoices and other documents. If the end result of your collaboration with a designer has been design without tears then you and your designer have worked as a team. The home you imagined has been brought to life, not by magic, but by hard work and cooperation, resulting in a fresh, new look that will inspire you for years to come.

Comfortable living and a true enjoyment of your home can be achieved through sensual texture variations. The current trend is for layering floor coverings to add richness and warmth achieved by overlapping several smaller, lightweight rugs with patterns and colours that are complementary, such as a striped runner on top of a larger geometric rug or overlapping multiples of the same style rug, but in a variety of colours. To capture an inviting look with a lived-in feeling, start with comfortable seating and mix with well-loved antiques or weathered vintage pieces that add soul to any space. Avoid buying sets or groupings;, for instance, instead of buying a matching sofa, love seat and chair, select a sofa then a love seat then a chair that work together but don’t necessarily match. This will offer more flexibility and freedom to rearrange and move items from room to room and home to home. A statement piece of furniture can be the inspiration for the design of your whole room. Choose versatile furnishings and invest in classics that endure over time and allow creativity with accents and accessories so that you feel comfortable about your room and the choices you make. Benches and ottomans offer flexibility, and can have different uses as coffee tables and extra seating and can be pushed aside when not in use. Welcome a touch of nature into the room with a variety of plants or fresh flowers. A plant is a very calming and helps to purify the air. If you can’t use the real thing, a tall silk tree will soften a corner of the room or create a break for the eye. You can also use a decorative room divider or screen and achieve the same thing. Uncluttered, comfortable rooms are relaxing and easy on the eye, encouraging people to stay together in the room –- a valuable asset in today’s hectic life. The first step is to create a focal point that draws the eyes. It can be a fireplace, bookcase, piano or perhaps a table with a vase of flowers. 90

Avoid overstuffed chairs. If you’ve ever tried to curl up in an overstuffed chair with a hot drink, a quilt, and the latest thriller, you will have soon realised that the designers have sacrificed comfort for prestige and image. The style for 2010 is a carefully edited ‘”anything goes”’ approach, which is all about the mix and how you combine individual, disparate elements such as combining graphic, modern print textiles with traditional chairs and sofas. Whether you’re scouring flea market stalls or browsing in shops during a quick weekend getaway, incorporating souvenirs in your home can give it personality. Try collecting genuine old items that appeal to you and impart some meaning or invest in some handmade artifacts; even the most ardent modernists like to see natural materials or the hand of the craftsman brought into their homes. Display your treasured items along with simple accessories such as wooden bowls and baskets left empty or filled with apples, magazines or maybe photographs currently abandoned in a shoe box. Those who enjoy books will love filling their home with them. Books provide a sense of warmth to a home; and unless you buy books by the metre, the books you collect and read speak volumes about you. So don’t hide them away. Even if you haven’t got room for wall- to- wall bookshelves, stacking books on a console table makes a great display. Most designers place one or two books prominently on a coffee table, or stack them so you can read the titles. They are often art books, but can also be about nature, photography, travel or any area of interest, such as classic cars. Having books on the table is a great way to entertain guests and open conversation that leads to storytelling. A gallery display of family photographs is an attractive way to infuse any room with warmth.

To create a photo wall, place your favorite pictures in frames of different sizes and shapes and hang them in a mosaic pattern. Pull it all together by using similar frames or matt colour or by using only black and white pictures. New framed pictures can be added to the arrangement until you’ve formed an overall shape that works for you. Remember not to hang pictures for your height only. Consider the proportions of the wall as well as the surrounding furniture. A general guideline is to hang pictures 156 to 208 inches centimetres above the furniture. If the picture is hung too high it will seem to be detached from everything around it. If too low, it will interfere with the use of the furniture and will not be viewed properly. Choosing colour can be tricky whether you are starting out with a blank canvas or trying to match colours with existing pieces of furniture and furnishings. You may think you know exactly which colours you want to use but are dismayed when the colour that looked so perfect in the tin ends up shouting “mistake” once it has dried on the wall. The psychology of colour and its effect on human behaviour is now a serious course of study at universities. Commercial designers advocate painting hospitals, classrooms, fast food restaurants and offices in colours that will influence the behaviour and mood of the people who use these spaces. So why are we so cautious when it comes to using colour in our own homes? Many television makeover programmes have made a virtue of using bold colours in wild combinations; interior designers seem to have an instinct for what goes with what. But lesser

mortals need to be careful about casually throwing colours together. It is worth investing in a colour wheel to help you see how colours sit with each other before you splash out on what may otherwise turn out to be a garish nightmare. If you’re stuck for ideas when trying to decide what colour scheme to choose for a room, look at the furniture and objects you’re going to use. You may have a painting or a rug that can act as your inspiration. Many interior designers build up complex colour schemes from just one item. Look around you – even an old purple vase or the faded red covers of a collection of books can be the starting point of a whole room scheme. Children’s bedrooms are a great place to have fun with colour. Other places where you can experiment with strong colours are hallways and second bathrooms or cloakrooms that are not used as often as other rooms. White paint will never change a tiny cloakroom into a larger space so why not emphasise its small

proportions by painting the space navy as a contrast to white sanitary ware and white towels with a finishing touch of aquamarine. The important thing is to consider the quantities. Decide on your main colour and then add carefully selected accents. Consider the texture of your colours. You can tone down a bright red dining room by applying a glaze so that its vibrancy becomes a rich burnish. Colourwash a bright yellow over a white base to wash out the intensity and you will find that the original character of the colour is maintained and only its brightness is muted. You can layer colours for unusual effect. A piece of inexpensive pine furniture can be transformed by distressing it by painting an undercoat of blue, an overcoat of white and then sanding off the white paint on its corners and around its handles to make it look like it’s an antique. Although the designers’ colour wheel has just 12 colours, the colours vary continuously around the wheel with millions of possible shades. Understanding the colour wheel is very simple and can be vital when deciding on which colour scheme to use. All of the colours on the wheel are made up of the three primary colours: red, blue and yellow. When you combine two of the primary colours, you get green, orange or purple. These are called secondary colours. Once you mix a secondary colour with a neighbouring primary colour, you get a tertiary colour. It is important to know which colours work well together and the way to do this is this is to understand their relationship to each other on the colour wheel. Colours that are harmonious create different colour schemes. A monochromatic paint colour scheme is one of the easiest schemes to manage and is always appealing no matter the colour. Using different shades of one colour is a great way to add flair to a dull room. Although a monochrome scheme is not as colourful as a contrasting scheme, it always looks balanced and restful. By following a monochromatic colour scheme you can use various intensities of one colour to bring a sense of spaciousness and continuity to a small or crowded space. It also brings a sophisticated and elegant look if the colour you choose is used in different shades throughout the home. An adjacent colour scheme uses colours that are directly next to each other on the colour wheel. These colours have a calming effect and are best used in an informal or quiet space such as a bedroom. these paint colours have a tint of blue in them, but they are also different. This adds personality to the room while bringing it all together, giving your room a contemporary look that is sure to be an eye catcher. A complementary scheme uses paint colours from the opposite sides of the colour wheel. Using this colour scheme can produce a bold and lively effect. Examples of this scheme would be yellow and violet, red and green, etc. It is, however, one of the hardest schemes to pull off. For example, blue is a complementary colour to yellow, green is complementary to purple and magenta and red and green are also opposite on the colour wheel and will probably clash. Colours that clash are not always a bad combination if used carefully. They provide great contrast and high visibility. A triadic paint colour scheme is one that many people use throughout their homes. This theme uses three colours that are located around the colour wheel equally. One is used as the predominant colour, another as a secondary colour and a third as an accent. An example would be yellow-orange, blue-green and red-violet. If you still shy away from colour on your walls and prefer subtle, muted colours that are easy to live with, consider contrasting and giving life to them by using bright highlights in your accessories and upholstery. Consider a multicoloured rug, some coloured ceramics or glassware, vivid prints or paintings, or squashy cushions in jewel tones. The overall effect will be airy and soothing yet the flashes of colour can bring in your personality and be your signature touches. Colour itself is not magic, and to work magic it must be carefully combined with all the other elements in the house. Painting every room in your home with a different colour will result in a lack of harmony. A home should have a flow and energy, and rooms need to relate to each other in a harmonious way. Have fun with colour. Be brave! Be bold! Follow your instincts and give colour a go. If the result looks good then youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve got it right. 96

The benefits of orange are stability, reassurance and warmth. Orange people may be inclined to dramatisation, but are generally good-natured and popular. GREEN The colour of nature and energy, green is calming and restful and gives a sense of security and stability. It is perfect for bedrooms, living rooms and studies, but too much green can make people overly laidback so add some red or orange to liven things up. Green is the colour of healing. Green people are generally frank and community-minded, are fairly sociable, but prefer peace. Nurturers by choice, Greens are the ones who take care of other people, animals and plants.

BLUE Calming, soothing blue keeps hunger at bay. It promotes serenity, contemplation, loyalty, authority and protection. Blue is wonderful for bedrooms as it prevents nightmares and is also good in any room where peace and quiet is paramount, such as studies and bathrooms. Unfortunately blue can look cold and unwelcoming so choose a blue with a warm undertone. Blue people are compassionate and caring. Blue is the colour of deliberation and introspection, conservatism and duty. Blues like to be admired for their steady character and wisdom.

YELLOW Sunny yellow promotes energy, stimulates the intellect, and is perfect for kitchens, dining rooms and rooms that are deprived of sunlight. Despite its sunny hue, yellow is thought to enhance feelings of emotional distress and is not very restful in the bedroom. People who love yellow have a sunny and shrewd personality, a good business head and a strong sense of humour. Yellows are usually clear and precise thinkers with lofty ideals.

LAVENDER Lavender suggests the misty area between the sky and heaven. It is a good colour for feminine bedrooms and bathrooms, and can create a stress-free sanctuary, but it can also be insipid so liven it up with black, silver, or both. Lavender people may be on a continual quest for culture and the refined things in life. They prefer high and noble causes without the necessity of getting their hands dirty. A lavender person is usually creative, charming, witty and civilised.

PURPLE Rich purple is redolent of creativity, fertility and joy, but also magic, evil, death and sex. It should be used mainly in bedrooms, but cautiously as it can be overpowering. Purple people are fastidious, witty and sensitive, with a strong desire to be unique and different. Temperamental, expansive and artistic, a purple person may become aloof and sarcastic when misunderstood.

BROWN This scheme is very popular for people who are painters or artists because it provides a strong contrast whilst giving a sense of balance and richness. It is associated with security and stability, and is very practical. Brown is best for living rooms, but a livelier colour such as green or blue should be used in contrast. Brown people have stamina and patience, tending to be very solid and substantial, conscientious, dependable, steady and conservative. Browns love responsibility and are reliable and kind.

They created a much more ambitious project: connecting electricity and heating, and excavating the basement to facilitate more rooms and a bijou bodega, which has direct access from the kitchen and the adjacent meeting room. The interior decoration was carried out by Spanish company Miku, with the objective of developing an “elegant, contemporary, rustic style”. tree species, including the cork, olive and Spanish fir; and their déécor represents “unique variations on a unified design theme”, with some the furniture specially commissioned by the designers. Five of the rooms have fireplaces for log fires, and all have private gardens or terraces. The déécor combines a series of neutral tones: olive and champagne hues in the Celima restaurant and bold splashes of colour in the rooms – including fuchsia, turquoise and orange. There are paintings by Russian painter Pavel Nikolaev, and bronze statues especially commissioned by a Granada artist from Estudio de Arte Moreno. The restaurant has floor to ceiling sheer glass windows to maximise views to Gibraltar, the Mediterranean and northern Africa. Set on two hectares of land, the hotel features expansive communal areas around the pool and buildings – relaxed, cosy and paying complete respect to the environment. There are plans to add an additional 10 rooms and a spa, as well as an authentic Andalucian mill and farm for the enjoyment of guests. All of which is designed to enhance the hotel’s already well-defined, and refined, charm and comfort and consolidate its growing reputation – it only opened in November – as a private and peaceful haven in a wonderfully idyllic setting. Often like a glass of wine to relax in the evening? Well, good news girls, as it has been reported that treating yourself to a glass of red could in fact help you keep those pounds off. New research has revealed that those who regularly consume a glass or two of alcohol a day are less likely to gain weight than those who stick to water or soft drinks. These new findings come after a 13-year study monitoring the weight of over 19,000 American women, in relation to their drinking habits. It was discovered that those who declared themselves as teetotal gained the most inches while those who drank “moderate” amounts stayed the slimmest. One theory behind these results is that calories from alcohol have less impact than calories from food. But however busy it may be outside, as you walk into the salon you leave behind the outside world and arrive into a tranquil, relaxed space and the friendly smile of Jeannine Aslani. The salon and the treatment rooms are calming and serene with orchids and candles carefully dotted around. Jeannine has been working for many years alongside Marbella top-surgeon Alexander Aslani treating clients before and after procedures and decided to set up separately after many clients asked for friends to be treated even though they were not having surgical procedures. She offers many treatments at the clinic that include Peelings, Endo Lift, Soft Lift and diamond microdermabrasion – each different facial are specific to different skin problems and all treat different levels of the skin. Jeannine offered me a treatment and decided on the Diamond Microdermabrasion to refresh my skin and as I had never had one before I wasn’t sure what to expect. Jeannine would recommend a course of treatments depending on your skin and what it is that you need to be treated, which could vary from a 6 week course every week or one a month to maintain healthy skin. Jeannine cleaned my face then applied the peel which starts the process followed by a lovely warm towel that she wrapped round my face to remove the peel. She then began with the microdermabrasion machine which she moves around the skin removing the dead cells and concentrating on any specific areas. Many people may look at the machine and be wary but it just feels like a finger pressure all over the skin and rather than some facials that you cannot actually feel doing anything, you know that the machine is producing results instantly.

Jeannine finished the treatment with a hyaluronic gel which moisturises the skin as she massaged it in – I actually almost drifted off to sleep while she was doing this. As with other facials she would recommend keeping the skin clear and make up free straight after the treatment and to wear sun-block when in the sun. I went into the salon with a cold that felt like man-flu and left feeling rejuvenated and refreshed with smoother skin, promising myself I would be visiting Jeannine regularly for her to her magic.

Therefore, a general surgeon tends to deal with diseases of the intestine, veins, thyroid, breast, abdominal wall (hernias), obesity and perianal conditions.

In the meantime, he once again kindly invited Society Living and guests to an exquisitely select dinner at his eponymous restaurant in Casares. On arrival we were met in the hotel lounge bar by Hotel Cortesín general manager René Zimmer, who was also to join us for dinner, director of sales and marketing Javier Rivadulla and, perhaps most important of all (with due respect to the former two), Rodrigo. Rodrigo is the magician behind their cocktail concoctions (all especially made for Schilo) and, after our longish day at the office and an eagerly anticipative drive along the coast, his exceptional liquid creations were a welcome treat to begin the evening. First we savoured his Yuzu Sour (shochu, yuzu juice, lime juice and sugar syrup), followed by Mojito Zen (sake, lime juice, paste of green tee, sugar syrup, diced lime, mint leaves and lemonade) and finally Cucumber Caipirinha (cachaça, lime juice, sugar syrup, cucumber puree, diced cucumber and lime). Suitably relaxed and primed for dinner, we adjourned to the restaurant, where Schilo and his impeccably professional team awaited us. Always the innovator, Schilo had some surprises in store for that evening’s special tasting menu – as well as his customary favourites.

GOURMET CLUB

After whetting our appetites with a shot of homemade beer with yuzu, and various snacks and canapés including wasabi peas, sugared cashews, Lebanese baba ghannouj and frog leg with black, red and green garlic sauce, we began the main tasting experience. First up, accompanied by a Belondrade & Lurton 2008 (Rueda), was sashimi of salmon with crispy soya and green apple (and, remarkably, “oyster” flavoured green leaf), followed by a lobster capucchino. An excellent Conde de la Salceda Magnum Reserva 2001 (Rioja) was then opened for the spiced duck gyoza (a kind of “Japanese ravioli”, explained Schilo), then rio frio sturgeon with its caviar and, finally, suckling pig with tomato SAR curry and lime risottini. “Finally” that is, except for dessert: accompanied by a Par Naranja sweet wine (Conde de Huelva), we were served wild strawberries and violet then one of his surprises, the pièce de résistance of avocado crème brûlée and nutella sorbet. We were his first public guinea pigs for this dish – and more than willing. Perhaps surprisingly, it worked!

On that note, we re-adjourned to the lounge bar for coffees and liqueurs, where René explained: “We have an Italian and a Spanish restaurant here, and golf snacks, and we wanted something else that people couldn’t have anywhere else on the Coast.” We all agreed: nothing compared with Schilo – not just on the Coast, but anywhere. And his eminent colleagues visiting next month will no doubt concur.

ts sister restaurant Casanis has been a favourite among Marbella locals for years so it is no wonder that, only three weeks after opening, Casamono is already buzzing with clients and friends of owner Guy. The restaurant has been designed by the same artist who painted Casanis, Aldo Gigli, a long-time friend of Guy’s, and the main theme becomes obvious as soon as you walk in: Guy’s favourite animal, the monkey. The animal is a continuous theme throughout the restaurant, appearing on the menus, lights and windows, while the wall designs feature the monkey’s habitat – the jungle. Warriors, tall flowers and expertly carved wood – hand-carved by Mudo, Guy’s friend in Mallorca – adorn the walls, and large plants are carefully positioned around the large two-storey restaurant. Outside is a cocktail bar that will certainly thrive in the summer months. It is just minutes from the beach, so regulars and visitors to the Coast will love to be able to take the short walk and enjoy sumptuous cocktails while watching the hustle and bustle of the town. Inside, meanwhile, guests can enjoy an excellent lunch during the day or a great evening buzz listening to the relaxed funky tunes and waiting in anticipation of the sumptuous culinary delights. Guy opened this restaurant for the people around him: that is, to give his staff another challenge and a new motivation. The team is used to working together, bringing quality and freshness to the plate. While Casanis is more

no stopping us trying them. Banana bread with vanilla ice-cream, clafoutis, apple crumble and chocolate fondant finished the meal perfectly, leaving us comfortably full and very happy. Casamono has great service, a fantastic buzz and atmosphere, and wonderful food – the perfect venue for a night out with friends or a fun night out with a partner.

like a bistro, Casamono is in the style of a French brasserie – mixing original classics that are not overly elaborated with a few fresh favourites of Guy’s – and head chef Tulio Ricardo Zampieri. We were delighted to be invited to taste some of the mouth-watering dishes that included starters of moules Provencal served with chips; red beet, goat’s cheese, red onion salad with balsamic dressing; king crab; and sweet breads of white veal. Sharing all four meant we could enjoy the different flavours and tastes of each, something Guy says guests will be able to do with all dishes – making the meal more sociable. For the main course we enjoyed roasted country chicken with salad; salmon beurre blanc; leg of lamb; and bouillabaisse – four delicious dishes that we ate with vigour. The crispy skin on the chicken, the smooth, perfectly cooked salmon and the tender lamb all had flavours that exploded and melted in the mouth. While they were my fellow diners’ favourite dishes, the bouillabaisse was definitely the one for me. The fish was cooked to perfection, with juicy prawns and scallops that would leave any diners feeling enormously satisfied. We were tempted to decline desserts as many of us are on that bikini diet for summer but, after hearing what they were, there was

GARUM RESTAURANT FOND MEMORIES OF TOP MARBELLA CHEF Friends and colleagues were deeply saddened when Marcel Geel, the head chef at Garum Restaurant in Marbella, died suddenly at the end of the February – with no signs he had been ill. Originally from Holland, Marcel had been on the Costa del Sol for 15 years, the last five at Garum, which had just celebrated its fifth anniversary. He was an innovative chef and a popular figure among diners, with his warm hospitality, wonderful sense of humour and highly creative personality. A special memorial evening was held for Marcel at the restaurant last month, where an understandably emotional owner Timo Hamalainen said his death had been a huge loss for everyone: staff, clients, associates… “Garum was his family here in Spain.”
