ourism officials are delighted to point out to visitors that we have more than 300 days of sunshine a year on the Costa del Sol. Similarly, many of us – somewhat unkindly – like to remind our long-suffering friends and family in northern climes that we can enjoy an outdoor lifestyle here throughout the year.

The reality, of course, is that the days can get a little nippy from now, even though it is still commonplace to see al fresco restaurant terraces full of diners well into January. And, in the evenings especially, it is wise to wrap up a little. With that in mind, this month our Fashion Flair section – once again shot on location in Marbella – features a selection of ideal seasonal items to add to your wardrobe this autumn and winter, as well as some stunning pieces of jewellery for a touch of glamour as the festive party season draws closer.

Not all of us will be able to motor to this year’s Christmas soirees in a €1.5 million Pagani Zonda R, but we can always dream, or at least drool over the photos and gasp in awe at the technical details outlined in our striking On the Road feature for November.

Elsewhere this issue, we reveal the ultra weird diet secrets of the stars; preview Christmas make-up collections that add a touch of glitter to brighten up your day; have our customary trend-setting sections on cutting-edge gadgets, alluring glamour-product ideas, and exquisite and exotic fine dining; and bring you the inside word on latest movie and album releases, tours and general celebrity titbits.

Finally, as part of our ongoing commitment to accommodate advertisers’ changing needs and budgets, we have decided that the December and January magazines will be a combined bumper issue.

The next issue will still come out on 1 December, but we will be printing a considerably larger print run (replenished regularly over the two months) and the magazine will be packed with special articles to keep readers engaged and entertained over the entire festive period and into 2010.

Advertising rates for the December-January issue will remain the same, meaning clients can take advantage of some great “two for the price of one” deals.

THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON Almost a year has gone by since the original film, which is based on the 2005 debut novel by Arizona housewife STEPHENIE MEYER, took the movie world by storm telling the story of the vampire/human romance between Edward Cullen (ROBERT PATTINSON) and Bella Swan (KRISTEN STEWART).

Since the big screen release, sales of the four-book series have rocketed from 17 million to over 70 million worldwide and it has now been published in at least 38 different languages.

Edward and his vampire family leave America for Italy in an effort to protect Bella from the dangers inherent in their world. She then falls into a deep depression, until developing a strong friendship with a childhood friend, Jacob (TAYLOR LAUTNER), who just happens to be a werewolf – the sworn ancestral enemies of vampires. Jacob and his tribe have to protect Bella from her former nemesis, Victoria (RACHELLE LeFEVRE), a vampire seeking to avenge her mate’s death by killing the confused human.

Bella discovers that whenever she puts herself in jeopardy Edward’s image comes to her, and the desire to be with him leads her to take greater risks. She also finds out the real reason why Edward left her and sets out to find him. Little does Bella realise that she faces the prospect of a potentially deadly reunion with her beloved which is a far cry from the one she had been hoping for.

QUICK CLIPS TERRY GILLIAM is to return to Spain in the near future to finish the film he started some nine years ago. Work first began on The Man Who Killed Don Quixote in 2000, but the film got wildly out of control because of internal and external influences (a flood ruined sets and actor JEAN ROCHEFORT was seriously injured during the production). The on-set problems were chronicled in the highly-regarded 2003 documentary Lost in La Mancha, which starred JOHNNY DEPP.

QUENTIN TARINTINO has announced that he will make Kill Bill 3 but wants 10 years to pass between the Bride’s last conflict, to give her and her daughter a period of peace. In the meantime, the Bride in question, UMA THURMAN, is set to get married in the comedy Ceremony until she meets a younger man (MICHAEL ANGARANO) who has fallen for her. Filming started last month on Long Island.

DANNY TREJO, WALTON GOGGINS, OLEG TAKTAROV and That 70s Show’s TOPHER GRACE find themselves on the alien’s planet and I think you know what happens next.

There is also a rumour circling Tinseltown that the original Predators target back in 1987, ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER, could be making a cameo.

Filming recently started on Burlesque. A smalltown girl (CHRISTINA AGUILERA) with a magnificent voice gets work in a Los Angeles neo-burlesque club. Gossip Girl’s KRISTEN BELL is a sharp-tongued lead dancer and the main attraction at the club who can’t handle it when the newcomer hogs the spotlight. CHER will play the club’s owner and STANLEY (Big Night) TUCCI helps Aguilera’s character to settle in.

ANNA PAQUIN and STEPHEN MAYER, the co-stars of the hit horror TV series True Blood, which started on UK’s Channel 4 last month, are teaming up in Open House as a well-off couple with marriage problems. They have an open house in order to try and sell their home.

Days later, they realise that one of the people who viewed the house never left. Also stars TRICIA HELFER, RACHEL BLANCHARD and BRIAN GERAGHTY. Another TV actor moving in movie circles is the soon to be regenerated Dr. Who star DAVID TENNANT. After finishing filming his part in St Trinian’s 2: The Legend of Fritton’s Gold the talented Scot started on another comedy, Burke and Hare, playing half of a successful 19th century grave robbing team who supply Edinburgh’s Medical School with dead bodies – his partner in crime is SIMON PEGG.

MILLA JOVOVICH confirmed she will return for the lead role as Alice in Resident Evil: Afterlife along with all her clones who appeared at the end of the last movie. Fellow eye candy ALI LARTER will take time out from filming Heroes to reprise her role as Claire Redfield and Prison Break’s WENTWORTH MILLER will also join the zombie fighting crew.

It will also feature new characters taken from the Resident Evil video games.

CHRIS PINE, who will reprise his role as James T. Kirk in Star Trek 2, is being lined up to play CIA analyst Jack Ryan in a redux of the franchise that is based on the TOM CLANCY novels. The character was created for ALEC BALDWIN in 1990’s The Hunt for Red October. Then HARRISON FORD played the CIA agent in 1992’s Patriot Games and 1994’s Clear and Present Danger. Finally, BEN AFFLECK portrayed Ryan in the 2002 film The Sum Of All Fears.

An array of talent has just started filming the action-comedy The Other Guys. Set in New York it follows two detectives: one (WILL FERRELL) is a forensic accountant who’s more interested in paperwork than hitting the streets; and the other (MARK WAHLBERG) has been stuck with his partner ever since an embarrassing public incident with his quick trigger finger. They idolise the city’s top cop pairing of DWAYNE JOHNSON and SAMUEL L. JACKSON but, when an opportunity arises for the two losers to step up to the plate, things don't quite go as planned. Also on board are EVA MENDES, MICHAEL KEATON, STEVE COOGAN and DAMON WAYANS JR.

he recent BEATLES revival thanks to their remastered albums and the Beatles Rock Band computer game has helped to wipe out the majority of MICHAEL JACKSON’s debts. He died owing $400 million and sales of the above are expected to net the estate $250 million by the end of the year. In 1985 JACKO out-bid PAUL McCARTNEY for the 250song BEATLES back catalogue, paying $47 million, and their friendship was never the same again. He then sold half to Sony in 1995 for $150 million and his share is now valued $1 billion. His own music is expected to net $200 million by the end of the year.

Another revived star who is alive and kicking is GARY BARLOW, and he has arranged the Children In Need gig at London’s Royal Albert Hall on Thursday 12 November with PAUL McCARTNEY, MUSE, silly LILY ALLEN, DIZZEE RASCAL, SNOW PATROL, a patched up LEONA LEWIS and SHIRLEY BASSEY. The show will be broadcast on BBC1 that weekend.

BARLOW also scotched all talk of ROBBIE WILLIAMS rejoining TAKE THAT by the end of the year saying, “I’m fed up and bored of all the different rumours. I can’t answer them any differently. We’re not going to be reuniting at Christmas.” If they changed their minds they could always do with an extra roadie!

ROBBIE’s new album Reality Killed The Video Star is out on 9 November. Did you hear about his mishap prior to performing his new single Bodies on the X Factor last month? BACKSTAGE PASS THE U2 REVOLUTION RETURNS TO SPAIN Irish rockers U2 are taking their 360° tour for another lap next year and it comes back for a solitary gig in Spain at the Estadio Olímpico de Sevilla on 29 September. The tour is named after the 360-degree staging and audience configuration it uses for shows, which U2 claims is “the first time a band has toured in stadiums with such a unique and original structure”. And it is to promote the No Line on the Horizon album which was released in February. Despite the concert not taking place for another 11 months it is expected to sell out very soon and tickets are available now at www.ticketmaster.es.

Meanwhile, here on the Coast Málaga’s Teatro de Cervantes gives you a chance to take a trip down memory lane on Thursday 12 November when the GLENN MILLER ORCHESTRA swings into town. I

t is always a pleasure to report good news, and there is more of it this month, with Marks & Spencer and Hard Rock Cafe announcing they are coming to Marbella.

They join a growing list of top brands opening up boutiques and outlets on the Costa del Sol this year, and these top companies only make such an investment when they know the future is positive.

As I’ve said before, in one sense Marbella is like an island, and I believe it has the best possibility of coming out of the crisis before other parts of Spain, and even the world.

At the time of writing I am at the SIMA real estate fair in Madrid, where we have a stand to promote our Madrid, Marbella and Sotogrande offices. Most of the people visiting – probably 99 per cent – are Spaniards, while the exhibitors are essentially developers selling stock in the “sleeping cities” on the outskirts of Madrid. Young couples, for example, looking for their first home. The prices are discounted

between five and 40 per cent, so there are some good deals to be found.

The talk here is of a definite improvement in the market, something we have noticed on the Costa del Sol and which I expect to continue through autumn.

It’s been freezing in Madrid – I’ve had to wear stockings, jackets and boots – and this just brings home to me how lucky we are in Marbella with the weather. It does make a big difference, especially with the improved transport links these days. I was talking to an architect friend here and he said how delighted he was to be able to make the journey from Málaga, by AVE high-speed train, in just two and a half hours and be left in the heart of the capital city. People love that!

Back in Marbella, there was the usual mix of social events, often combined with support for worthy causes.

I attended one event organised by Barbara Weber which combined a fashion show with

fund-raising for a children’s charity; and there was a well-organised presentation at Roberto’s in Puente Romano by Luxury MB Race Events, a new business that plans to organise car racing events and special trips to races. The concept is to offer a complete package of racing, the Spanish lifestyle, good food, new business partners and friendship, with luxury all the way.

Harry’s birthday at home was, as always, a lot of fun, with good music and many friends visiting from Madrid; and another highlight of the month was the performance at Incosol of actors Máximo Valverde and Eva Santamaría’s comedy musical “Con Ganas de Reñir” (“Feeling Like a Quarrel”), followed by dinner in the hotel’s jaima-style theatre.

Away from the coast, there was a charity event at Alvaro Domecq’s Los Alburejos finca in Sevilla in aid of the Vicente Ferrer Foundation, which raises funds to improve the lives of under-privileged people in India and raise awareness of their plight in Spain. A lot of us travelled from Marbella to attend the event, which proved to be a lovely day in the countryside, including a spectacular horse show.

On a more serious note, Rotary held a conference on swine flu where Prof. Enrique de la Morena – author of “Qué me pasa, doctor” (“What’s wrong with me, doctor?”) and a fellow Rotarian – recalled that, while there were serious concerns of an epidemic when the flu first broke out in Mexico, it was now not considered as severe. In fact, he explained that people who do become affected can generally return to full good health with the right treatment, and even those most at risk should be well protected when the vaccination process begins this month.

Finally, as the current president of Marbella Rotary, I am pleased to report that one of our main fund-raising events will be an exhibition of paintings, probably in February. The idea is to involve young artists and others who want to donate paintings, with all the money raised going to Rotary’s charity programmes. If you are interested in giving us a painting, I would love to hear from you.

In the meantime, I hope everyone enjoys a pleasant November – with more of the great autumn weather we are so famous for here!

he weather in northern Italy in early February is a bit of a lottery. It can be sunny, wet or snowing but, in all cases, it will not be warm. Snow had fallen over most of northern Europe a few days before Pagani was due to wheel out its spectacular Zonda R at the Monza Circuit. On the day, the white stuff was mostly gone, but then the heavens opened up.

The luckless mechanics worked frantically in the box while the VIP guests and a very small group of invited press fidgeted in the hospitality suite. When the rain showed no signs of abating, the order was given to change from slicks to rain tyres and soften off the suspension settings to cope with the slippery conditions.

There had already been a false start when the howl of a highly tuned V12 echoed off the pit lane wall, sending many people scurrying from their warm and dry surrounding into the sodden pit lane. It turned out to be a customer in his Zonda F deciding to stretch his car’s legs.

Finally, however, everything was ready, and the moment everyone had been waiting for arrived. With its black carbon-fibre bodywork only lacking racing numbers and sponsors’ stickers, the only Pagani Zonda R in existence was wheeled out of the box.

If you are behind the Zonda R when it starts, you will be treated to high drama at more than one level. Make no mistake, this is an impressive looking beast, and the nearest thing a civilian will get to owning a Le Mans sports

prototype this side of actually buying one.

Unlike a full-blown factory sports prototype that uses a lot of very specialised and expensive bespoke racing technology, the Zonda R promises to be a somewhat more user-friendly experience.

Race technology is seen in the way the Zonda R starts up though. While its boomerang pattern LED tail-lights are a distinctive styling feature, most people don’t notice the circular cluster of LED lights hidden under the four exhaust pipes and the towing eye until they flash when the starter motor is engaged.

The big V12 catches, its bark echoes down the pit lane and everyone close by takes a step or two back. Quiet this car is not! Then the Zonda R rapidly departs the pit lane and we

move to the nearby chicane to see how it looks on the fly.

Despite far from ideal conditions for a 750hp supercar, the Zonda R is still a sight to behold as it rockets around the sodden track, wet weather tyres and high downforce aerodynamics encouraging an impressive plume of spray.

Even in these streaming wet conditions, the Pagani racer can pull serious retardation coming off the long straight. Merely watching it brake, arc into the turns and then depart into the distance, the bark of its race-tuned V12 bouncing off the scenery did not fully reveal the impressive lateral acceleration it can pull in these conditions.

It was only after the car had passed through, and I had the chance to examine a sequence of

cornering shots on my digital camera’s screen, that I noticed the unloaded rear wheel lifting the outer third of its tread clear of the tarmac.

High rear roll stiffness apart, it takes some serious g-forces to do that in the wet!

This thundering motor is the most powerful incarnation of the M120 Mercedes V12 that AMG has offered Pagani to date, its 750hp output nearly doubling the standard tune 400bhp unit that powered the original 1,380kg Zonda C12 from 1999.

With every successive model the Zonda has become lighter and more powerful, and the “R” brief called for 1,120kg and 750hp. In the event, the engineers exceeded themselves with the finished car tipping the scales at just 1,070kg. In parenthesis, the road-going Zonda F weighs 1,230kg, and its

Clubsport version shaves off a further 25kg. Each of Pagani’s partner companies in this bold venture sent a senior team member to say a few words and to be on hand to answer questions at the unveiling in the evening.

I homed in on Wolf Zimmerman, development engineer and member of the board of Mercedes-AMG, for a rundown on the AMG motor. “It is still the same basic M120series 5,987cc, 48-valve, DOHC V12 from the W140 Mercedes S-Class,” he explained.

“AMG first got involved with the C12 S where we used a 7.3 litre (7,291cc) motor with 555bhp, and with each new model we have been able to turn the wick up even more.

“This culminated with the 620hp, 7.3 litre version in the Zonda F,” Wolf continued. w w w. s o c i e t y l i v i n g m a g a z i n e . c o m

“If you tick the Clubsport option, further work on the intake system and more radical camshafts deliver 650bhp at 6,200rpm with 780Nm at 4,000rpm.

“As the Zonda R is a highly focused trackday car, Horacio asked for something more specialised, and with that in mind we looked in our back catalogue.”

In standard 6.0 litre form, this V12 motor was developed for long distance GT racing in the CLK GTR. It started the 1997 FIA GT Championship with 600hp and ended up with 630hp. Mercedes-AMG snatched both team and drivers (Bernd Schneider) championships that year, and repeated the hat-trick in 1998.

Over these two seasons, the CLK GTR won 17 of the 22 races it entered and set 17 poles.

Lessons learn in the intervening 10 years on gas flow, camshaft profiles and engine management systems have enabled AMG to squeeze another 120hp from the motor over the old CLK GTR race tune with no downside. In the lighter Zonda R, the proven 6.0 litre V12 is still not overly stressed with 750hp and 710Nm of torque.

With a power-to-weight ratio of 1.43kg/hp, the Zonda R redefines the term catapult as used to describe its acceleration. Where the manual Zonda F rockets 0-100km/h in 3.6 seconds and tops out at 345km/h, the Zonda R annihilates the same benchmark sprint in just 2.7 seconds. And, despite the drag created by its positive downforce aerodynamics, it will reach 350km/h or 218mph.

One of the things enthusiasts enjoy with classic sports and racing cars is the throttle response from a cable pulling carburettor or mechanical injection butterflies open. You do not get more direct than that.

To maximise response, the AMG motor has a cable-operated single-throttle per-cylinder arrangement. That potentially snappy response means you have to be very careful how you unleash the mighty torque to the rear wheels, especially in damp conditions.

A competition limited-slip differential is there to help you keep the Zonda R pointing the right way, while the fully-adjustable suspension and 12-position Bosch Motorsport traction control and ABS system allows you to tailor the driving characteristics to your liking.

There are two distinct schools of thought on gear shifting: one favouring clutch and gearlever, the other biased towards F1-style paddle shifts. For nearly a decade, Pagani has resisted the temptation to abandon the clutch and gear lever, and most of his clients have applauded that decision.

As a dedicated track car, or more appropriately track day weapon, the Zonda R benefits from anything you can do to minimise lap times. At that point there is no option but to move to either a sequential lever or paddle shift system.

Pagani uses the paddle-shift operated XTRAC 672 magnesium-cased six-speed dog ring sequential race gearbox, combined with Automac Engineering’s AMT system that executes gearshifts in a mere 20ms.

Aerodynamics include a completely flat bottom, rear diffuser, various NACA ducts, and a unique front bonnet with internal airflow perfected in the wind-tunnel with models by Ennegi. The end result is downforce in the sports prototype league. The big numbers are 650kg front and 850kg at the rear. Weight distribution remains the same 40/60 front/rear as the Zonda F road car.

Couple this to the mechanical grip from slick tyres and you can see why the serious driver of a Zonda R will need to be as fit as a professional racing driver just to withstand the cornering and braking g-forces this car is capable of generating.

On the braking front, a massive 380mm cross-drilled, vented Brembo ceramic disc sits behind each wheel, clamped by huge six-pot calipers and four-pot calipers front and rear.

APP alloys. Pagani has now taken on Pirelli as its tyre partner, and Horacio’s latest creation wears bespoke PZero Zonda R rubber.

The Zonda F Clubsport can pull 1.4g lateral acceleration on street legal Michelin Pilot Sport rubber. On slicks, and with its substantial downforce, the Zonda R is past 2.2g on that score.

One of the things that marks out a Pagani interior from most other supercars is the fact that every single switch in the cabin is machined from solid aluminium, every other component made to measure.

Despite its minimalist cabin fittings, what there is in the Zonda R is similarly bespoke. From the leather straps and buckles that secure the front clamshell and are repeated as pulls on the insides of the lightweight carbon doors, to the steering wheel with rev counter built into its centre hub, the Zonda R has unique design elements that both look good and function perfectly.

The figure-hugging carbon-fibre shelled lightweight race seats are made by Toora, and can be individually tailored to suit each client.

They are designed to the latest FIA safety regulations to work with a five-point harness and a HANS device.

The centre tub is carbon-titanium composite for immense strength and 46

rigidity, and further reinforced by a chromemoly steel roll cage. The suspension is hung off the chrome-moly steel space frames bolted to the front and rear of the centre tub, and in true racecar style the engine acts as a stressed member. The Zonda R’s structural rigidity is over 30,000Nm/degree of twist.

While the Zonda R shares the basic double wishbone suspension philosophy with its roadgoing sisters, the execution is a radical departure with a fully adjustable race set-up incorporating Aspa forged AvionAl components. Ohlins, the Dutch race suspension manufacturer, supplies its spring and damper units for all Pagani cars including the Zonda R. The machined structural ErgAl parts supporting the engine and gearbox were also designed to reduce overall weight. This obsession with weight saving found a further small but significant boost through the use of Poggipolini Titanium screws across the whole car.

Such perfection does not come cheap, however, and the Zonda R’s stratospheric €1.46 million tax-free price tag shades even the Bugatti Veyron.

However, in the elevated world of the supercar, Horacio Pagani has defied all the critics to become a legend in his own time in less than a decade, a feat never achieved before by a new marque. To date, around 100 Zondas have been built, and they hold their value like no other modern supercar, the Ferrari Enzo being the honourable exception.

While the market for high-end bankers is circling the bowl, the world of high-end art is still doing pirouettes. Degas’ “Petite Danseuse de Quatorze Ans” fetched over US$19 million at Sotheby’s recently. At least some surviving billionaires are still willing to shell out ridiculous sums for stylised lumps of bronze.

Someone once said, “The difference between the men and the boys is the price of their toys!” Pagani will only ever make 15 of his carbon-fibre and titanium masterpieces, and even before this prototype turned a wheel in front of the assembled audience at Monza 10 had already been accounted for.

To go from zero to hero in such a short time, and sell such an expensive track day toy in the depths of the worse recession the world has seen for 70 years, takes a very special kind of touch. Some would call it art; others say it is the magic of Pagani.

Celebrity trainer Gunnar Peterson, who has trained Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Lopez and Penelope Cruz, has dished the dirt on how stars achieve their figures. “I had one actress training with me four times a week in addition to daily exercise bike classes. When the press asked how she’d ‘transformed’ her body, she said, ‘Oh, I do yoga and hike with my dog.’ It makes me laugh.” So the next time you see a pin-thin celebrity bragging about her relaxed approach to eating, remember this:

THEY TAKE DRUGS When Lindsay Lohan was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving, police said they found cocaine in her pocket.

Paris Hilton recently admitted to US talk show host Larry King that she takes Adderall for attention deficit disorder.

Both drugs are often used by women looking to lose weight. Hollywood’s party girls always seem to have access to certain drugs known to help shed pounds.

At the moment, Adderall is the latest diet drug craze in Hollywood, and the number of celebrities addicted to it continues to rise.

Just about every female celebrity arrested – from Paris to Nicole, from Lindsay to Britney Spears – has had prescription Adderall in her handbag. It keeps you awake while killing the appetite. For the jet-setting, hard-partying girl it has become the miracle pill – one, however, with potentially dangerous consequences.

Even when taken as instructed, Adderall can cause psychotic episodes, depression and serious heart problems.

Eating disorder expert Carolyn Costin, who has treated many Hollywood actresses, says she’s even seen a rise in “the drugs used for attention deficit being crumpled up and 64

snorted”. Some celebrities also take Clenbuterol, known as “Clen”. Commonly prescribed to treat respiratory problems in horses, in humans it can cause fat loss. While Clenbuterol and Adderall create a slimming effect in the short-term, after a while users report a sudden and uncontrollable weight gain. Having tampered with the natural metabolism, the drugs stop working.

Manhattan-based trainer Justin Gelband, who works with catwalk and catalogue models, says: “Diet pills and steroids are huge right now. After Kate Moss was caught supposedly doing coke, the modelling agencies started to crack down on girls using hardcore drugs like cocaine and heroin to stay slim.” So now it’s more diet pills and steroids; they are easier to hide and, if pressed, the girls can say that they have a prescription.

THEY EAT NOTHING BUT BOILED EGGS During the filming of Cold Mountain, there were rumours that one famous actress on set ate only boiled eggs. She would rise in the morning and eat one and then have one or

two at the end of the day. That was her entire diet. And apparently she is not alone.

Celebrity trainer David Kirsch says: “I had a client who was getting ready for the Oscars and all she ate was one meal a day – of two boiled eggs! I was able to persuade her to add some almonds and a protein shake and some vitamin supplements. It’s a self-defeating strategy; you need to eat enough, and particularly protein, to build lean and toned muscle in the first place.”

THEY FAST Paris Hilton caused a stir when she walked into New York restaurant Nobu recently.

When a waiter asked the heiress for her order, he was quietly told, “Mineral water.” In fact, over the course of her two-hour “meal”, Paris took sips of water and Red Bull – she didn’t eat a single bite. And she’s not alone.

Super-slim Desperate Housewives star Marcia Cross was spotted dining at a restaurant a few years back with her now husband Tom Mahoney. According to one eyewitness: “He ordered sea bass and prawns, but she just sipped fruit juice.” Marcia recently admitted to the pressure to be thin. “Not eating is a

Then there’s the master cleanse, otherwise known as the lemonade diet: water mixed with maple syrup, lemon juice and cayenne pepper.

Beyonce admitted following it for two weeks to drop one-and-a-half stone (10 kilograms) for the film Dreamgirls, and Jared Leto used it to shed the two stone (13 kilograms) he’d gained to play Mark Chapman in the film Chapter 27.

Gunnar Peterson calls it the “You’re an idiot” diet. “I had a client who did it and I thought he was ill,” says Peterson. “His skin was grey and his eyes had terrible dark circles under them.

He was shuffling when he walked, and this was after only 10 days!”

One of Hollywood’s dirty little secrets is the “IV diet”, in which celebrities check themselves into hospital to get put on an IV so they can avoid eating altogether. Peterson says of the IV diet: “This is beyond ridiculous. If you’re doing this you’re not fat, you’re crazy!”

Suzanne Peck is the director of programmes at Homefield Grange Retreat, a cleansing spa in the UK that relies on juice-fasting. She says: “Fasting is designed to rest the digestion, hence allowing clarity of thought, cleansing of

toxins and healing of the body in general; not to fit into a size-zero dress.”

THEY ABUSE LAXATIVES Britney Spears has never been shy about her love for junk food and engages in all kinds of behaviour to counteract her taste for Taco Bell. She smokes, drinks coffee and Red Bull, has diet pills in her bag and takes Adderall. She has also been seen hitting all-night drugstores, shopping for laxatives. And she is certainly not alone. Today, many actresses are taking laxatives in the form of “dieter’s tea”, which has a mild laxative effect. Some starlets are drinking up to 10 cups a day. Trainer Gelband says: “The latest trend among models is mixing laxative tea with the master cleanse diet. All they drink is master cleanse and laxative tea.”

THEY CHAIN-SMOKE Grey’s Anatomy star Katherine Heigl looks to have lost a stone (six kilograms) in the last year. She may be following a healthy eating plan, but she appears to have a secret weapon – she smokes constantly. One day recently, the beautiful blonde was spotted having lunch in Los Angeles. She ordered just a salad, but

spent the meal chain-smoking. Nowadays she is rarely photographed without a cigarette in her mouth, and when she isn’t smoking, she is clutching a pack. Marc David, nutritional psychologist and author of The Slow Down Diet, says: “It’s a choice, really. You are choosing possible lung cancer and death over treating your body with respect, all in an effort to be slim.”

THEY EAT PEANUTS Supermodel trainer Gelband admits: “I had one girl who was living on Diet Coke and peanuts. She drank three to five Diet Cokes a day and ate a big bag of nuts. If she got hungry, she smoked. Her eyes had huge bags under them and she looked wasted. When we tried to work out, we had to stop every five minutes. It was awful.”

THEY GUZZLE CAFFEINE Paparazzi shots regularly show Hollywood’s skinniest actresses, such as Renee Zellweger and Mary-Kate Olsen, sporting giant sunglasses and regularly coming out of Starbucks clutching gigantic cups of coffee.

COFFEE - The key to turning back the years?

t receives an equal amount of positive and negative attention in the media, but the humble cup of coffee might be better for you than you think! A new study by Nescafe Green Blend has found that the levels of antioxidants in coffee are actually higher than those found in green tea. What’s more, coffee has also been linked with studies pointing it out as an antidote to heart disease and a cure for bad breath, as well as its fated boost in energy and concentration.

There’s also some serious research being undertaken for green coffee, which is a lot like green tea; it’s essentially the same old coffee beans that aren’t roasted or fermented like your standard cuppa.

There’s evidence that the untreated coffee beans are high in polyphenols, which are chemicals linked to anti-ageing and a stronger immune system.

It’s advised that you don’t drink too many cups of coffee in a day though, as the caffeine can be too much for some – for an antioxidant boost without a withdrawal headache, try a cup of decaf.

THEY LIVE AT THE GYM Who can forget those photographs of a skeletal-looking Teri Hatcher jogging through Hollywood with weights in both hands and bones protruding-through her skin? Actress Kate Hudson, in a quest to shed the five stone 66

(32 kilograms) she gained while pregnant with son Ryder, admitted to working out up to three hours daily for three months. To prepare for her role as the sexy Daisy Duke, Jessica Simpson worked out for two hours a day, six days a week. Justin Gelband says: “You can get addicted. Unless you’re a professional athlete, you don’t need to do more than one-and-ahalf hours a day to get a great result.”

Amber Kenain, general manager at Crunch gym in Hollywood, a celeb favourite, told Glamour magazine: “There’s one singer-actress who works out at my gym for about five hours a day, even on weekends. She spent her birthday here.”

Peterson admits: “To be fair, a lot of the top women are doing the right things: eating healthy and exercising, but not obsessively. It’s the up-and-comers who I see going to crazy extremes.” He adds: “Forget trying to look like a celebrity – look at you. The reality is, the girl that’s 10 pounds overweight but loves her body is winning against the girl who is underweight but hates herself. There’s no straight guy in the world who knows the difference between a size 14 and a size 4.”

Nicki says: It’s hard to squeeze all the nutrients you need into just 800 calories, and dropping so low reduces the number of calories your body needs to burn each day, which defeats the object. To keep your metabolism, nutrients and energy levels sufficient to fuel an active life, stick to 1,2001,400 cals per day, and aim to shed a stone in two months rather than one. Best of luck!

Q

Can an eyelid correction be done under local anaesthetic?

A.

Preferably yes, and it is my preferred proceeding. Of course, it can be done under general anaesthesia if a patient requires, or under a combination of local with general anaesthesia.

Do I have to be afraid that I might not be able to close my eyes after the operation?

Over-resection of skin, with the belowmentioned consequences, is a possible complication. In all honesty, this is very rare and the result of poor execution of the operation.

What in my experience is much more frequent is patients objecting to under-resection; that is, they believe more skin on the upper eyelids ought to have been removed. When consulting a patient, it is important for me to establish that, while naturally aiming for a perfect result, preservation of function has to be kept in mind primarily. With very good results more can be removed after about a year.

What recovery time can I expect?

Blepharoplasty (eyelid correction) is a day case operation which does not involve any major recovery period. However, bruising is anticipated and subject to individual predisposition. You may or may not have it.

Bruising after a blepharoplasty normally prevails for roughly a week.

What are the most frequent complications?

Mild conjunctivitis and temporary tearing. In my experience they tend to be temporary by nature.

Regarding patients’ expectations, some tend to misunderstand that a blepharoplasty (an eyelid lift) is not a brow lift, and has nothing to do with altering the eyebrows.

Is a blepharoplasty painful?

Not normally. Bear in mind that pain is an individual experience, but analgesia consumption after the operation is normally very low.

How long do results last?

This is impossible for me to say. I guess about 10 years, but that depends on lifestyle and, more importantly, genetics.

Can an eyelid lift be combined with a facelift?

It can, absolutely; and in some, but not all, cases I do actually advise to do so.

I am scared about droopy eyelids; how often does that happen?

That is a problem of lower eyelid blepharoplasty. Over-resection of skin can lead to muscle damage and therewith to downward traction of the eyelid. To avoid this, I regard it as mandatory to abstain from skin resection (or only a minimal one). I am furthermore inclined to use internal sutures, lifting the lower eyelid margin to the orbital rim, a so-called canthopexy suture, to prevent this from happening.

I am scared that my eyes will look hollow after the operation?

This, once again, is a problem of overresection; in this case over-resection of fat from behind the orbital septum. I do not just resect the fat, but use at least part of it and redrape it over the orbital rim to smoothen the contour. This generally contributes to a much fuller and more youthful look of the face.

Schilo Fine seasonal dining in an inviting winter setting

ord travels fast whenever a fascinating new restaurant arrives on the Coast, and such was the rapid success and flourishing reputation of Schilo at the Finca Cortesín golf and hotel resort when it opened just over a year ago.

Schilo has arguably cemented Finca Cortesín’s commendable standing on the Coast – in addition, of course, to the hotel’s striking setting within immaculately manicured grounds and a host of world-class amenities including 67 stunning, luxury suites, one of the finest spas in Europe, complete with thermal suites and a “snow cabin”, and a world-class golf course which last month hosted the Volvo World Match Play Championship.

Schilo following our series of special summer articles featuring the comments of guests who were invited to sample the restaurant’s delectable “degustación” tasting menus. So impressed were some readers by the reviews, they took the opportunity to visit the restaurant and, on all accounts, the recommendation did not disappoint.

For anyone unfamiliar with or who hasn’t had the pleasure of experiencing Schilo, the restaurant is the creation of head chef Schilo Van Coevorden, considered one of the leading chefs in Europe and the driving force behind restaurants in illustrious establishments such as Blake’s in Amsterdam and London’s Lowndes Hotel.

Over the course of the past year, Schilo has delighted diners in southern Spain with a collection of culinary masterpieces inspired by his great passion for Asian food, and infused with a selection of European culinary trends and a hint of Arabic flavours. The restaurant’s fabulous open kitchen provides something of a spectacle and, coupled with a superb sommelier and waiting team who describe each dish as it is served (and the occasional visit to the table from the main man himself), you are invited to embark on a truly interactive dining experience which leaves you feeling like you have been indulged with something quite special.

GOURMET CLUB

A choice of three tasting menus is available depending on the quantity of dishes you desire, and each diner is asked if they have any special preferences or dietary requirements. Only the finest ingredients are used, with an emphasis on the finest local produce the region has to offer, and, on the other hand, high quality, globally sourced goods – such as Australian white tuna which is served in the delightful sashimi of red and white tuna with a flavoursome wasabi sorbet.

A good proportion of the dishes on the menu are changed regularly according to the seasons although a few classics – such as the Lebanese baba ghanouj, which is lightly drizzled with sesame oil and served with paper-thin Iranian bread; the mouth-watering Japanese duck spring roll; and the refreshing salad of daikon root, asparagus, avocado and wild ginger dressing – have remained on Schilo’s menu throughout the year.

Flowing with the recent change of seasons, Schilo has perfected some new autumn and winter creations, again making the best possible use of the finest seasonal produce.

Characteristically suited to this time of year is the chicken yakitori served with foie gras and miso flavoured turnip – a dish which perfectly encapsulates the harmonious fusion of east and west in Schilo’s cooking. A second clear highlight of the winter menu is the cappuccino of white truffle and sweet corn – fluffy yet surprisingly filling and an absolute treat for the taste buds. Other new additions are the turbot with asparagus, sake and rich caviar sauce; and the barbecued wagyu beef, which literally melts in the mouth and is served with seasonal Japanese mushrooms.

The ambience of the restaurant adapts well to the colder months and darker evenings with elegant, candlelit table settings, rich draping and tapestries on the walls which create a warm and inviting atmosphere. Limited place settings are available with a policy of only one sitting per table each evening so diners are encouraged to take their time, relax and enjoy dinner at ease. For this reason, the restaurant evokes a bustling yet refined atmosphere which lends itself well to special occasions and celebrations.

The softly lit finca-style courtyard and the grandeur of the hotel’s foyer and various reception areas are also particularly enticing, and an overnight stay at Finca Cortesín in conjunction with dinner at Schilo is proving a popular option. The hotel is nestled in the hills just above Estepona – half an hour’s drive from both Marbella and Sotogrande – but an overnight stay adds an extra memorable touch to the evening and can simply be that little bit more practical.

Schilo will be holding a special Christmas dinner on 24 December and a gala dinner to bring in 2010 on New Year’s Eve. Special Christmas and New Year’s packages are being offered by the hotel based on a stay of three or five nights, with use of the hotel’s facilities and a full programme of festivities and gastronomic events.

t has been regarded as one of the Coast’s finest Thai restaurants since opening in Banús’ fashionable Cristamar Centre four years ago. From the onset Naga Thai has remained a firm favourite with both the area’s visitors and locals for its fabulous authentic Thai cuisine, an excellent standard of genuinely welcoming service and an attractive setting which is pleasantly relaxed by day with an al fresco terrace where customers can enjoy a leisurely lunch, and chic and cosmopolitan by night with a kitchen which stays open until midnight.

One thing which stands out at Naga are the small touches and attention to detail such as fresh flowers on each table, a maître’d who knows his menu inside out and the impression of a good feeling between the restaurant team which surely add to its popularity and make it such an attractive place to dine.

The latest addition at Naga is a revamped wine list which has been especially created by the owners, who believe a high quality wine list is as important an accompaniment to fine Asian cuisine as it is to European and other Western food. By re-visiting the original wine list – which has always maintained an excellent standard – Naga has upgraded the quality by cancelling a few existing numbers and keeping their list fresh by bringing in a selection of new, sought-after wines.

The restaurant has consistently attracted a broad range of international clientele and the wine list certainly reflects this diversity with the strong influence of regions across France and Spain (including Cataluña). Notable choices are highlighted by a delicious Maison KuentzBas from the Alsace region and other whites include an excellent choice of Bourgogne chardonnay. A recommendation from the list of rosé is the Côtes de Provence “Clos de l´Oratoire” by Château Minuty. The notable list

of reds includes a generous choice from Spain’s award-winning Ribera del Duero area, as well as Rioja and Somontano, while the Château Chasse-Spleen offers something quite special.

Whichever your preference, the impressive list of wines can be savoured alongside a fabulous menu of Thai specialities lovingly created by the head chef, whose expertise has been perfected in the kitchens of some of the most prestigious addresses in Bangkok. The menu features an extensive, ongoing list of classic Thai dishes – including starters, soups, salads and an ample choice of mains – as well as a smaller selection of special dishes compiled and changed regularly, jointly by the chef and maître’d. An emphasis on creativity ensures each dish is beautifully presented, and is bursting with colour and fresh garnishing.

Interestingly, there is an option of ordering off the menu should you wish to try something different or something you perhaps tried in Thailand, and diners can also make special requests for vegetarian or health-conscious “light” dishes.

A central concept behind the menu at Naga Thai is the combination of European-inspired dishes with traditional Thai tastes. The crispy duck a l’orange in Thai style, for example, fuses a typically French dish with the sweetness of

fresh Thai flavours; while the succulent beef tenderloin can be ordered with crispy basil leaves or royal Thai green curry. Other popular main dishes at Naga include the impressively presented fried rosada fragranced to perfection with Thai herbs: and the giant grilled king prawns with rich red curry sauce and kaffir lime leaves – both of which are photographed here.

Naga Thai is open daily for lunch and dinner (kitchen open 1-4pm and 8pm-midnight, although diners can stay longer) and a special menu with live entertainment will be laid on to celebrate New Year’s Eve. Take away and a full catering service, which has been enjoyed at some of Marbella’s most glamorous and wellattended functions and events, is also available.

egular fine diners will almost certainly be familiar with The Orange Tree, where an excellent reputation for creative, contemporary cuisine has ensured an impressive flow of customers through the charming restaurant – located just off the picturesque Orange Square in Marbella Old Town.

The restaurant opened seven years ago and has grown from strength-to-strength thanks to its winning combination of superb food, a high level of service from a personable restaurant team and an intimate setting which is warm and inviting. It has a lively atmosphere at this time of the year, and flows effortlessly into the Old Town’s quaint cobbled streets during summertime.

It is testament to The Orange Tree’s success that special occasions such as New Year’s Eve are fully booked months in advance but, nevertheless, the venue makes an excellent choice for celebrations and occasions all-year round, whether it be a romantic dinner for two or a larger group booking.

Dining at The Orange Tree is always an exceptional experience, not least because of the fabulous food but also owing to the small touches such as freshly homemade bread baked daily in delicious flavours including honey and walnut, spicy cardamom or sundried tomato and served with fresh olive

tapenade; or the excellent wine list, which has an emphasis on the finest Spanish wines such as the smooth Pago de los Capellanes from Ribera del Duero, the full-bodied Enrique Mendoza from Alicante, or the Hacienda Monasterio from the same Ribera vineyards as Vega-Sicillia.

Much to the joy of their returning clientele, the trio of reputable Orange Tree chefs – who respectively hail from Holland, the UK and Ireland – regularly compile new and exciting menus which change in the restaurant every six weeks. But it goes without saying that these menus of exquisitely presented, seasonal masterpieces are as much a culinary delight for new customers as they are for old.

Each menu is kept fairly concise with seven starters, seven mains and seven desserts, including delicious meat and fish dishes as well as tempting vegetarian options (it’s also worth mentioning that the kitchen is flexible when it comes to vegetarian dishes).

In addition to the main menu, The Orange Tree’s “early bird” menu – which includes a reasonably priced choice of either two or three courses taken from the main á la carte –also proves extremely popular and is perfect for anyone wishing to combine an early dinner with shopping or a late afternoon ramble around the Old Town.

DA BRUNO CELEBRATES 15TH ANNIVERSARY Commemorative gastronomic event and photographic exhibition The Da Bruno group celebrated 15 fantastic years of business on the Coast with a wellattended gastronomic festival at the Da Bruno Sul Mare restaurant in Marbella. The sound of Northern Soul and Tamla Motown for many brings back memories of a well-spent youth and a scene that of late has had a massive revival, not just in the UK but also throughout Europe and as far away as Australia. Now the music they say never went away is coming to the Coast with a week-long festival at the Moonlight Club in the Sunset Beach Club resort in Benalmádena Costa. Costa Del Soul 2009 kicks-off on Saturday 31 October with sessions every night from 9pm till 2am (until 5am on Friday and both Saturdays), plus a live band on Saturday the 7th.

The main room will play Northern, Motown and club anthems, and there will also be various theme nights hosted by legendary Wigan Casino DJ Kev Roberts, plus DJs who are well known on the modern day scene. The Hitsville International Soul Club Room will concentrate on the rarer Northern sounds, crossover and tunes for collectors and connoisseurs with Dave Moore and DJs from the UK, Spain, Germany, Italy and Sweden. There are also afternoon sessions in this room on Saturday the 7th (1-6pm) and Sunday the 8th (12-6pm).

NEW BOOK RELEASES DEADLY SECRETS – crime thriller set in southern Spain Written by local author Robert Tenison, Deadly Secrets is a gripping crime thriller about bribery, corruption, money laundering and murder in Andalucía, with the action taking place in the fictional coastal town of Los Cipreses, as well as in Granada, Madrid, London, the Cayman Islands and Sevilla. Shatner star turn at Marbella International Film Festival William Shatner’s Gonzo Ballet won the best documentary award at the Marbella International Film Festival. The Hollywood veteran, and executive producer of the film, was in Marbella to receive the award, one of several presented at the fourth annual festival – which also included screenings, workshops and musical performances.

Inauguration of revamped Echegaray Theatre in Málaga Málaga Mayor Francisco de la Torre presided over a starstudded gala inauguration of the renovated Echegaray Theatre. Annual fashion show presents new collections Eva Justh held a fashion show showcasing her autumn/winter designs, which include some great party outfits for gala dinners and balls.
