March madness for mums

O

ne of the many benefits of living in Spain is that we can enjoy the best aspects of the Mediterranean lifestyle, while still holding on to our own favourite traditions and customs. For mums (and dads), for example, that means enjoying two special days a year: Spanish Día de la Madre on the first Sunday of May and, for those from the UK, Mother’s Day on 14 March. With that pending date in our thoughts, and bearing in mind how we don’t always show how much we love them, we decided to make mothers the focus of this issue. Our Glamour Digest features a stunning range of gift ideas, from traditional jewellery, perfumes, flowers and fashion items to some well-deserved pampering with innovative skin care and make-up products. We even think of the dads, who celebrate Día del Padre in Spain on 19 March (San José). In our health & beauty section we offer a beauty gift guide to suit all kinds of mums: Earth, Hipster, Perfectionist… even Cutting Edge Mum, who would no doubt also be thrilled to receive one of the state-of-the art gadgets featured in Tech World. For Mum About Town, we slip into a little March madness in Fashion Flair, with

the Coast’s top boutiques showcasing their more edgy styles to coincide with the release of Tim Burton’s eagerlyawaited Alice in Wonderland film. Mums will also be delighted with our cover this month, featuring a man who touches so many hearts with his music (and, so we are told by the ladies, his looks), Michael Bublé – and whose latest album, Crazy Love, would make another excellent Mother’s Day gift. In an interview with the acclaimed singer we discover how, as a child, he was destined to become a salmon fisherman, like three generations before him, and how he gained his big break into stardom when performing at the wedding of the Canadian prime minister’s daughter. Out for another supercharged spin On the Road, we put the Porsche 997 Turbo through its paces, with the verdict from our man on the track: “The new engine is dynamite and the chassis is a pure work of art.” This issue also marks the start of spring, officially on 20 March in Spain, and we will all be hoping that the rains of the past few weeks subside and we can once again enjoy the glorious weather for which the Costa del Sol is renowned.

Relaxation treats

Sophisticated scents All women love perfume, but while some like to stick to the same scent for years others prefer to change it now and again. Be Delicious by DKNY is a juicy fragrance that combines the scent of apples with the sophisticated blend of exotic flowers and sensual woods. Presented in a sleek metal and glass apple bottle, the fragrance has notes of apple, cucumber, rose, violet and white amber among others. This modern fragrance is perfect to lift mum’s spirit on her special day, so go on: treat her! www.dknyfragrances.com www.debenhams.com

Mums work hard all year round and deserve a bit of relaxation time…why not treat them to some gorgeous smelling Satsuma body polish and body butter from The Body Shop for Mother’s Day. The body polish is a gel-based foaming polish that is a gentle daily exfoliation, with crushed walnut shells and loofah particles, and cleansing with a hint of zesty Satsuma; while the body butter is an intensive all-over moisturiser containing community traded melon seed oil and shea and cocoa butter, as well as hydrating and invigorating Satsuma essential oil for up to 24 hours moisturisation. www.thebodyshop.co.uk

Stylishly saving the world Why not make your mum a style icon at the same time as helping to save the world…Vivienne Westwood has designed a limited edition T-shirt in collaboration with Fashion For Relief which was unveiled at a special fashion show organised by Naomi Campbell in London. The T-shirt retails at £40 and all proceeds will go to The White Ribbon Alliance, which supports women and girls around the world, with special focus on its partners in Haiti who are helping to rebuild the healthcare system for mothers and babies. In January a UN report noted that 240,000 pregnant and lactating women in Haiti require nutritional support, so the more help that gets to them the better. Vivienne Westwood is an iconic fashion designer whose creations have been worn by celebrities all over the world. The T-shirts are sold exclusively online at www.viviennewestwoodonline.co.uk and in the Vivienne Westwood Conduit Street and World’s End stores.

And for the dads… Father’s Day (Día del Padre) in Spain falls on 19 March – coinciding with San José – so for those celebrating with Spanish dads why not treat them too. The Cool Water scent from Davidoff embraces the power of the ocean with a fresh and masculine fragrance – with notes of spicy coriander, musk, amber and essences of lavender. Fathers will feel empowered and full of strength and vitality wearing the scent that is advertised by one of the coolest men in TV – Josh Holloway. So why not let your dad lose himself in the fragrance. www.zinodavidoff.com 12

BIG SCREEN

Movie lines WHAT’S ON SCREEN THIS MONTH… WHAT’S BEING FILMED AT THE MOMENT… AND WHAT’S IN THE PIPELINE… MICKY REYNOLDS LOOKS INSIDE THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF MOVIES

QUICK CLIPS Over the past 12 months interest in vampires has increased thanks to the Twilight Saga franchise and the success of TV’s True Blood and The Vampire Diaries. So it was only a matter of time before some clever cloggs went back to the very beginning to tell the story that inspired BRAM STOKER to pen his 19th century cult novel. Step forward Universal Studios with director ALEX PROYAS at the helm for Dracula: Year One. The story of Vlad III, Prince of Wallachia, this feared Romanian royal was known as The Impaler, terrorised his enemies and, legend has it, drank their blood and stuck their heads on spikes. Man of the moment SAM WORTHINGTON, who has already signed up for the Avatar sequel, will portray the lead role. Another movie based on the same character is also in the pipeline – Vlad will concentrate on the Prince’s younger days, with BRAD PITT in the producer’s chair. Before that PITT may be working on the film adaption of the famous western TV show Gunsmoke as Marshall Matt Dillon – but RYAN REYNOLDS has also thrown his hat into the ring for the part. The CBS TV series ran from 1955 to 1975 telling the story of a lawman trying to keep the peace in the wild west hell-hole of Dodge City. Another old cowboy classic, True Grit (the 1969 original starred JOHN WAYNE), is being spruced up with JEFF BRIDGES as ageing US Marshal Rooster Cogburn who, with another lawman (MATT DAMON), attempts to track down the killer of a 14year-old girl’s father in hostile Indian territory. JOSH BROLIN is also saddled up for this Christmas Day release. KATE BECKINSALE will return with a small part in the fourth film of the Underworld franchise as the vampiress Selene. She opted out of last year’s prequel Underworld: Rise of the Lycans but is returning to pave the way for her 11-year-old daughter LILY MO SHEEN, who played a young Selene in 2006’s sequel Underworld: Evolution, to feature in any future movies. The 18

youngster’s father, MICHAEL SHEEN, who is currently working on the Tron sequel, will return as Lucian, as will BILL NIGHY as Victor. The film will be shot in 3D. CHARLIZE THERON has attached herself to the lead female role for Mad Max 4: Fury Road. TOM HARDY (RocknRolla) will replace MEL GIBSON as main character Max Rockatansky and the story will carry on from where the third instalment in the franchise, 1985’s Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, finished off. Meanwhile, GIBSON starts work this month on the action drama How I Spent My Summer Vacation as a career criminal who gets caught by Mexican authorities and is sent to a drug-filled prison, where he learns how to survive with the help of a nine-year-old boy. PENELOPE CRUZ seems certain to be on board for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides playing the “foil” to JOHNNY DEPP’s Captain Jack Sparrow – the plot is hush hush for the time being but it will focus on Sparrow and Captain Barbosa (JEFFREY RUSH) trying to find the Fountain of Youth. The rights to another old Disney pirate favourite, Treasure Island, have recently been acquired by UK-based

Ecosse Films and they have said that main character Long John Silver will be hipper in the style of ROBERT DOWNEY JR’s recent interpretation of Sherlock Holmes. ORLANDO BLOOM, who was forced to walk the plank from the Pirates franchise, is currently working on the “Hitchcockian thriller” The Good Doctor as a medic who has spent his life looking for respect and finds himself being blackmailed for prescription painkillers by an orderly (MICHAEL PENA). COURTNEY FORD (Alien Raiders) plays a woman who has eyes for the doctor, who in turn has an interest in an 18-year-old patient who he tries to keep in the hospital – the reason why he is being blackmailed in the first place. WILL FERRELL, who has confirmed he is up for Anchorman 2, starts this month on Everything Must Go as a guy who loses his job and gets locked out of the house by his wife. She deposits his belongings on the front lawn, and he spends the next four days trying to sell his possessions. Percy Jackson & The Olympians: Lightning Thief star LOGAN LERMAN is favourite to land the lead role in the next Spider-Man movie. As we told you last month, the franchise has been given a total reboot and will mainly

concentrate on Peter Parker before he was bitten by a genetically engineered spider on a school trip. JAMES FRANCO, who had a major part in all three films in the aforementioned superhero franchise and of late has been a new addition to the long-running US TV soap General Hospital, starts filming 127 Hours this month portraying mountain climber Aron Ralston, who made headlines in 2003 while climbing in Utah. He was forced to amputate his own arm that was crushed under a boulder for more than five days. After the amputation, he had to climb a 20-metre wall of rock and hiked until he was discovered by a family and later rescued by helicopter.

MOVIE OF THE MONTH ALICE IN WONDERLAND TIM BURTON was chosen by the Disney Studios to give this legendary LEWIS CARROLL novel his personal touch and he stated that his vision would be neither a sequel to any existing Alice movie nor a “re-imagining”. The ace director added, “On prior versions it was always a girl wandering around from one crazy character to another, and I never really felt any real emotional connection. My goal is to give the story some framework of emotional grounding and to try and make it feel more like a story as opposed to a series of events”. The now 19-year-old Alice (MIA WASIKOWSKA) attends a party at a Victorian estate shortly after the death of her beloved father. The party, unknown to Alice, is her engagement party arranged by her mother and sister. Just as her fiancé-to-be is about to propose in front of hundreds of snooty socialites, Alice spots a white rabbit (MICHAEL SHEEN) wearing a waistcoat and pocket watch; curiosity gets the better of her and she feels the need to run after the rabbit who has entered a maze. She follows then falls down a rabbit

hole which leads to Wonderland, a place she visited 10 years ago, yet has no recollection of – but the inhabitants of this magical world remember her. She reunites with her childhood friends, the Dormouse (BARBARA WINDSOR), Tweedledee and Tweedledum (both played by MATT LUCAS), the Cheshire Cat (STEPHEN FRY) and the Mad Hatter (JOHNNY DEPP), who explains to Alice that her help is needed to overthrow the Red Queen (HELENA BONHAM CARTER), who has taken control of Wonderland from her sister, the White Queen (ANNE HATHAWAY). Alice goes on a journey of self-discovery and along with her friends must try to save Wonderland from the hands of the Red Queen and her accomplice, the Jabberwock (CHRISTOPHER LEE). This movie is the latest member of the 3D revolution and will no doubt be a box office smash thanks to its special effects, the storyline and its all-star cast. Also features CRISPIN GLOVER (Knave of Hearts), ALAN RICKMAN (the Caterpillar), TIMOTHY SPALL (the Bloodhound). w w w. s o c i e t y l i v i n g m a g a z i n e . c o m

Superbowl half-time show last month, are to perform their legendary Quadrophenia album in full at their Teenage Cancer Trust show on 30 March. The SUGARBABES will perform live on BBC TV’s Eurovision-Your Country Needs You show this

month. The programme decides who will represent Great Britain in the Eurovision Song Contest in Norway on 29 May. They will sing their new single Wear My Kiss shortly before the winner is revealed. It will be a return to roots for the band’s newest member JADE EWEN, who represented the UK in last year’s contest singing the ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER penned It’s My Time. In other news, AMELLE BERRABAH plans to do a charity skydive for Cancer Research. I bet there are a couple of exBABES who wouldn’t mind getting hold of her parachute before she takes off. PAUL McCARTNEY has said that he hopes someone will start a fund to raise cash to buy the legendary Abbey Road Studios, the place where the BEATLES recorded most of their albums, after the owners EMI recently put it up for sale. With all the money he has made out of the music business why doesn’t he put his hand in his pocket and start the ball rolling. BOYZONE made an emotional TV appearance last month performing together for the first time since the death of STEPHEN GATELY. They sang their new single Gave It All Away on the UK GMTV breakfast show. The song, which is on their new album Brother, released on 8 March, featured the deceased singer as it was recorded almost two years ago. The album cover will only feature the four remaining members of the band. So what is going on with AEROSMITH? Their management recently announced the band will be touring Europe this summer playing mainly festivals with STEVE TYLER on vocals. Yet guitarist JOE PERRY has said they are auditioning for a new singer, as TYLER was “out of the picture

BACKSTAGE PASS for about a year” while he had leg surgery. Tyler checked into rehab last December for treatment after getting addicted to painkillers. (As we were going to press AEROSMITH announced they would play a one-off gig in Barcelona on 27 June; tickets go on sale 5 March from www.livenation.es). The last known works of JIMI HENDRIX will be released this month. Valleys Of Neptunes features 12 tracks including a cover of THE CREAM classic Sunshine Of Your Love, plus rerecordings of Stone Free, Fire and Red House which were all originally on his debut album Are You Experienced in 1967. Acting legend CHRISTOPHER LEE is to release a “symphonic metal” album; Charlemagne: By the Sword and the Cross, which features the 87-year-old on vocals, is out on 15 March. The 2009 American Idol winner KRIS ALLEN is taking time out from recording to fly to Haiti to lend a hand there after last month’s earthquake – any chance he can take his namesake LILY with him and leave her there? After a few months of silence silly LILY is back on the social network Twittering on and on about nothing; she also upset COURTNEY LOVE when she blocked the HOLE singer from wearing a Chanel dress at last month’s BRIT Awards – now that’s one female you should not upset. As in years gone by the winning artists at the aforementioned awards saw a sudden increase in sales. ROBBIE WILLIAMS will be laughing all the way to the bank with a 150 per cent increase in sales of his latest album Reality Killed The Video Star. Not far behind him was FLORENCE AND THE MACHINE who had a 140 per cent rise for Lungs and LADY GAGA was third on the list, upping sales of The Fame by 90 per cent. What do LADY GAGA and WOLVERINE have in common? They are both EX Men. Mickey Reynolds is the manager and DJ at Castaways Rock Bar in Fuengirola – situated behind the taxi rank near Las Palmeras Hotel.

MUSE FOR MADRID Top UK alternative rockers MUSE open their European tour with their only gig in Spain during 2010 at Madrid’s Estadio Vicente Calderón on 16 June. This year the band say they will concentrate on playing festivals rather than smaller venues, to try to increase sales of their The Resistance album which was released last September. The band are currently breaking into the American market big time thanks to some of their songs being used in the first two films in the Twilight vampire franchise. Tickets are now on sale from www.livenation.es.

Rihanna received an award, with Jay-Z and Kayne West, for best rap/sung collaboration. Rihanna also wore Minx nails on the evening. (Photo: Minx)

Other tickets available for gigs in Madrid from the above site include UK electro popster LA ROUX on 12 March and legendary US alternative rockers SONIC YOUTH on 19 April. Spain’s biggest festival, Benicassim, has announced the first acts of its line-up with THE PRODIGY, KASABIAN, PUBLIC IMAGE (PIL), THE SPECIALS, IAN BROWN AND DIZZEE RASCAL. Tickets for the event, which takes place from 15-18 July, are available from www.fiberfib.com. Despite rumours going around, MADNESS are not playing on the Coast or Gibraltar in the near future. Their only scheduled gig in

Spain at the moment is at the SOS+4.8 Festival in Murcia on the weekend of 30 April/1 May. The line-up also includes FRANZ FERDINAND, FATBOY SLIM and THE HORRORS. More info on the festival is available at www.nvivo.es/festivales/SOS+4.8 The Coast is once again barren when it comes to decent gigs but Madrid has THE ANSWER, who won many new friends when supporting AC/DC last year, on the 13th; ‘80s favourites SPANDAU BALLET on the 15th; and the recently reformed indie rockers OCEAN COLOUR SCENE on the 22nd. Tickets are available from www.ticketmaster.es. U2 have announced that their next album, Songs of Ascent, will be released in June and they will promote it on the second part of their 360° tour which starts this summer and includes a solitary gig in Spain at the Estadio Olímpico de Sevilla on 29 September. Tickets are still available at www.ticketmaster.es. As World Cup football fever increases, KASABIAN lead singer TOM MEIGHAN officially launched the new England away red shirt during the encore of a Paris concert last month. The shirt will be worn by the England team for the first time during their friendly with Egypt at Wembley on 3 March. Gibraltar’s very own BREED 77 release their new single on 14 March, a version of the 1994 smash Zombie, which was a hit for the CRANBERRIES, who are in concert in Madrid on 12 March. Tickets are available from www.nvivo.es. AC/DC will release a greatest hits package next month; AC/DC: Iron Man 2 features 15 songs from their back catalogue which will be used in the forthcoming movie. Their classic Shoot To Thrill has already been released as a single and the video features clips from the film. Comeback of the century? THE WOMBLES want to reform so they can play at this year’s Glastonbury festival – organiser MICHAEL EAVIS says they are welcome and maybe they can help clear up the fields after the festival has finished.

Michael Bublé bares his soul

T

he first thing you might notice about Michael Bublé is that smile – the devilish choirboy grin now belongs to a man at the top of his game who unwraps his passions in intense musical colours. Smiles and sorrows are all over Michael’s new album, Crazy Love, featuring a baker’s dozen of MB originals as well as a thrilling selection of standards that show equal doses of confidence, vulnerability and artistic ambition. You can pretty much get a sweep of Michael’s life from the songs he’s chosen and written. The hopeful first single is his original Haven’t Met You Yet, which is practically a knock on the door for anybody harbouring a longing for love. The other hook-laden Bublé original, Hold On, is his 22

heart-felt paean to that rare higher love that survives even after the break-up smoke clears. Michael Bublé’s Crazy Love was recorded to truly create an authentic sound. Nearly all the songs were recorded right off the floor in the studio with the band, and sometimes huge orchestra, right by Michael’s side – allowing all sounds to bleed into one another. It’s the way Elvis and even Louis Armstrong used to record. He has sold 22 million albums, fills up arenas around the world, and has three Grammy awards on his mantle and scores of Junos – the Canadian equivalent. Bublé even managed to buy a Canadian hockey team – a passion almost equal to his joy of making a song his own.

“It’s like a Chelsea fan being told, ‘Listen, Abramovich is running out of cash; you want a piece of Stamford Bridge?’ I don’t do anthems. The Canadian national anthem is the only song that you can accidentally forget the words to and people f***ing hate you for the rest of your life.” Young Michael Bublé started singing early while growing up in Burnaby outside Vancouver on the Pacific coast of Canada. But for much of his childhood his destiny was to become a fisherman. There were three generations of salmon fisherman before him including his father – a captain – who worked the Pacific north-west. “Working on a fishing boat for six years with my dad every summer gave me the greatest lessons I’ve learned in my life,” recounts Bublé. “As much as I hated it, I loved it. Between 4 or 5 am the boat’s engine would start running and my father would come to the crew room where we were sleeping. He’d holler, ‘All right boys, time to get up!’ It would be co-O-OOLD. We’d be sleepy, groggy. I’d be in my boxers and a pair of socks. I’d throw on a pair of stinky diesel-smelling jeans and a shirt and a sweater to head up the ladder to put the gum boots on and get my rain gear.” On a boat Michael learned that a livelihood carries risks and rewards. “You could end the day with enough to buy a new car, or have wasted the fuel and food on a luckless day. It was exciting, too. The first salmon that came over everyone would have to grab it and give it a big kiss on the mouth and you would smell that unmistakable stinky-but-beautiful smell of a salmon coming fresh out of the water. It was a very grown-up place to be. I am who I am because of my experience on that fishing boat. That was my school for being a human being. It made me. It makes me appreciate what I have now. This thing they call work, I get to sing.” w w w. s o c i e t y l i v i n g m a g a z i n e . c o m

With a grandfather who played a collection of his favourite vinyl to young Michael over and over again, it wasn’t long before the two would be singing every song together word for word. There’s hardly a Bublé fan out there who can’t re-tell the story of his beloved Italian grandfather trading plumbing parts and services to bar and nightclub owners to get him stage time in front of a crowd. “Sometimes the audience was just my parents, grandparents, two sisters and three drunk guys in the corner who weren’t even listening. But my family’s love and support strengthened my resolve to keep going. When I started out, I learned organically to be aware of the moment or hide from the fact that some people in the room didn’t care. I used self-deprecating humour and sang often – three shows a night for all I was worth. Nearly always, by the time the night was over, I had ‘em. By the time I got to play for people who actually paid to see me, it was easy. One day someone disconnected the parachute and I felt like I could fly.”

Working on a fishing boat for six years with my dad every summer gave me the greatest lessons I’ve learned in my life That’s right: overnight success. NOTTTT! For 11 years, Michael bounced around the entertainment business singing throughout Canada, sometimes acting. Though starting to make a name for himself performing at Vancouver’s famed Babalúu Club, he was close to calling it quits. “It was just going nowhere.” Then lady luck appeared at a wedding – not his own. Michael’s biggest break appeared back in 2000 when the daughter of then Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney was getting married and a mutual acquaintance asked him to perform at the event. He sang Mack the Knife. Fortunately, one of the guests was the Prime Minister’s good friend, award-winning record producer David Foster, who had helped fashion hits for Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson and a Grammy-load of others. As they say, the rest is hysteria. (Besides, Mulroney reportedly put Foster in a headlock until he agreed to sign Bublé.) Six years and three albums later, he had managed to sell out arenas all over the world, culminating in a headline gig captured in documentary detail on the hit DVDs Michael Bublé Meets Madison Square Garden and his previous Caught in the Act. The icing on this career success came as his haunting Home turned into a number one, not only for him but also a number one country hit for Blake Shelton. His Everything travelled in full circle from his discovery at a wedding to become one of the most popular “first dance” tunes in the bridal pantheon. For all of his diversity of musical styles, love is the ocean where Michael gamely fishes: storms and waves and nets and mermaids and sometimes man overboard. He has sung about it all because he has oared the craft of love gone right – and wrong. “I hope people will hear the difference on my new record,” says Michael. “Maybe they won’t know why but it will be distinct from everything else they are hearing on the radio. Like the difference between a nice picture of flowers and real flowers with the colour and perfumes. People have an inborn sense of what is authentic.”

I Michael Bublé’s album is out now and makes the perfect gift for Mother’s Day. The new single, Cry Me A River, is due out on 15 March. 28

have always placed great emphasis on the importance of confidence in business, so I was especially pleased when this was also the main focus of a top-level conference in Málaga. Organised by the Instituto Internacional San Telmo and Diario Sur newspaper, the Andalucian Business Seminar brought together leading business people and analysts from throughout Spain, including the presidents of KPMG and Iberia, John Scott and Antonio Vázquez, respectively; the former president of Endesa, Manuel Pizarro, who had just resigned as a Partido Popular member of the national parliament; and celebrated author Leopardo Abadía (La Crisis Ninja), who presented his latest book, La Hora de los Sensatos. Apart from diagnosing the current economic situation and discussing recipes for future business recovery, the conference also stressed how damaging a lack of confidence can be. As I always say, life goes on, we still have to work, and one of the best ways to survive the crisis is to boost confidence. This positive attitude was present at a breakfast for 25 different companies organised

by Marbella’s Centro de Iniciativas Turísticas (CIT), where we were able to exchange ideas and even clients. I also noticed an air of optimism at the Fitur annual tourism fair, where the whole of Andalucía was promoted in the one superbly laid out pavilion; airy, spacious, nice lighting, and informative and interesting stands representing each area in the region, including the Costa del Sol. I have to say as well that I was particularly impressed by the

Portuguese stand, where the main theme was “Fashion and Design”. They featured designer furniture (a table made out of knives and forks was amazing!) and fashion shows from top designers. Perhaps a good idea for Andalucía next year? While there I had the pleasure of being introduced to Radomir Antic, the only person to have managed Real Madrid, FC Barcelona and Atlético Madrid football clubs and currently the Serbian national football team manager. I understand he has a property in Marbella. I was also honoured to receive a medal, for contribution to tourism services, from the Crediservices company at the Roquetas del Mar stand. Before returning to Marbella, I was invited to singer Encarnita Polo’s birthday, and I and our Madrid office manager visited the Sotheby’s International Realty auction house, where we met the manager for Madrid and Barcelona, Pablo Melendo, and exchanged interesting views about the state of the market and how we can continue to grow together. Back home, it was quite a busy month for charity and social events. Marie Claude’s traditional Valentine’s Day party was fantastic, with the guests in masks and some incredible fancy dress outfits; Barbara organised a dinner at Guadalpin; and Roddy Shashoua celebrated his birthday at the MC Café, where our friend Charlie arrived in style in a 1930s vintage car. There was a ballroom dancing competition in Torremolinos; and a very funny show at the Alameda theatre in Málaga, “La Montaña Rusa”, starring actor Arturo Fernández.

The most important charity event was an wonderful evening at Incosol to raise funds for victims of the terrible Haitian earthquake. They had Haitian performers, Spanish coplas (folk songs), a show by actor Máximo Valverde, a fashion show, artists including singer Mario Mendes and, for the dinner, you could donate €100 and share a table with one of the famous guests. In Málaga for a meeting with Rotary governors, we promoted our own campaign to eradicate polio around the world. Bill Gates, for example, has donated $300 million from his foundation to help this worthy cause. On a lighter note, we enjoyed a pleasant walk through the streets of Málaga, discovering some exceptional mime artists. Another person looking for talent is one of my former employees, Sunsi, who is now working in TV and potting together an XFactor style show for youngsters aged up to 16. Any parents interested in arranging auditions for their children can contact Sunsi though our office. Finally, I attended a fascinating conference at the Hotel El Fuerte where the guest speaker was renowned Spanish explorer, mountaineer and writer César Pérez de Tudela, who is now 69, has had a ninehour heart operation and is still climbing mountains. The philosophy for climbing mountains is very similar to that for business: have as goal and go for it. As I said before, confidence is very important in life, especially now.

PORSCHE 997 TURBO IN A DIFFERENT LEAGUE PUTTING IT THROUGH SOME TESTING PACES ON THE ESTORIL RACETRACK, MOTORING AUTHOR, RACING DRIVER AND PHOTO-JOURNALIST IAN KUAH FOUND THE NEW PORSCHE 997 TURBO A MAJOR STEP UP IN CLASS AND PERFORMANCE 44

www.societylivingmagazine.com

ON THE ROAD

“The take-off from rest is simply sensational.

A

t a cursory glance, the most obvious difference in the appearance of the face-lifted Porsche 997 Turbo is its new range of alloy wheels. But, under the unchanged steel bodyshell, the technical differences are so far-reaching that Porsche could legitimately have given it a fresh set of clothes and called it an all-new model.

On the fast and demanding Estoril racetrack, the new Turbo showed its superiority at the very first bend. I know this circuit well, and the very first lap proved to me that the handling and grip of the latest Turbo are in a different league from its predecessor. I have always criticised the first generation Turbo for excessive weight transfer under acceleration and braking. This, and the way the

differentials were set up to transfer power, which resulted in a tendency towards understeer and sometimes unpredictable limit handling. On the limit, the new Turbo shows very little understeer compared with its predecessor, and is now very progressive as you approach and exceed its very high limits. Where previously the nose started to run wide if you carried a bit too much speed into a w w w. s o c i e t y l i v i n g m a g a z i n e . c o m

45

ON THE ROAD

bend, it now stays hooked in. Now, unless you are really carrying too much speed, when you think you are going to miss the apex, the front end can still find the grip to help you turn in tighter. Previously that would have been a mission impossible. Part of the recipe is the new Bridgestone rubber that has amazingly high limits for a street legal non-Cup tyre. The flat cornering stance of the Turbo helps its big tread width generate as much grip as is there for the 46

www.societylivingmagazine.com

asking. It certainly feels like it can pull over 1.0 g in a bend. The steering seems heavier than the first generation Turbos, but maybe my memory is playing tricks. In any case, this is a good thing on track and at high speeds on the autobahn, as the car feels more stable for it. Thanks to DFI (Direct Fuel Injection) and an improved pair of VTG turbochargers fed by a more efficient intake tract system, the new 3.8 litre motor does exactly what it says on the tin.

It is 20bhp and 30Nm up on lower boost pressure than its 3.6 litre predecessor, with fuel economy improved by 16 per cent. The bigger output numbers translate into 500bhp at 6,000rpm with 650Nm of torque from 1,950 to 5,000rpm, and it feels both more potent and smoother as well. The latest Borg Warner VTG turbochargers have been further developed for efficiency and reliability. “The cold intake side of the unit has been optimised for better airflow,” explained Porsche development engineer Axel Weyland. “This is another reason we could reduce the boost pressure. We now achieve 650Nm with less boost at the same engine speed that delivered 620Nm before.” The new 3.8 litre Turbo uses a derivative of the all-new engine family first seen in the second generation 997 Carrera last year. According to Axel, it uses a strengthened version of the same block used in the normally-aspirated Carrera motor. In a word, the new engine is brilliant. It revs faster and harder than ever, with no trace of the high rev reluctance of its predecessor. It feels like the internal components weigh less, but in actual fact they do not, as the pistons are larger. It also has a totally linear power and torque delivery. If anything, it goes from idle to cutout so smoothly that it will disappoint anyone who likes the old ways that involved a bit of turbo lag followed by a brutal lunge forward on full boost. Compression ratio is up from 9.0:1 to 9.8:1,

ON THE ROAD

which contributes to improved efficiency on part throttle and thermodynamic efficiency closer to that of a normally aspirated motor. The complete intake system is a new design with larger and smaller intake pipes and an expansion manifold system that improves the physical ram effect of the charge air as it works its way through the system. The new intercoolers have an 80 per cent efficiency rating compared with 70 per cent for the older units, and this has significant positive effect on the temperature of the chargecooled air. Thanks to the greater thermal efficiency of the new intercoolers and the higher compression ratio, only 0.8 bar of maximum boost is required compared with 1.0 bar for the previous model. This puts less stress on the engine and gives the engineers headroom to raise the boost pressure for future more powerful iterations. As before, there is an overboost facility, which increases torque but not horsepower.

This is now set at 1.0 bar instead of 1.2 bar, and lifts torque by 50Nm to 700Nm from 2,100 to 4,000rpm for 10 seconds. The rev limiter now acts at 7,000rpm. “In our search to ensure engine and gearbox weight did not creep up, we probably overcompensated,” explained Axel. “The new engine and gearbox are 15kg lighter than before, and with PDK the saving is 25kg compared with the old motor with Tiptronic. “The DFI system weighs just 8.5kg and we also saved a lot of weight with a new integrated dry sump oil system. The valve gear is also lighter, which has enabled us to increase the maximum engine speed from 6,750 to 7,000rpm.” The new integrated dry sump system has the same lateral g-force capability as before. However, the new design enabled the centre of gravity of the engine/oil tank system to be lowered by 30cm simply because there is now no need for a big oil tank high up in the engine bay. Finally, an all-new exhaust system with 5mm larger diameter pipes helps to reduce back-

pressure and contributes to the improved output numbers. It also sounds great. Porsche has listened to the critics of its PDK steering wheel shift system and so the Turbo has proper left and right paddles. However, the manual shift on the centre console mounted lever still works in the wrong direction. With its smooth and lightening fast upshifts, it performed impeccably on both road and track, and I am now happy to pronounce this combination as near to perfection as anything I have driven. Prime mover in the search for better handling was two times world rally champion and Porsche chief test driver Walter Rohrl, who gave the chassis engineers some very specific requests. “I was not happy with the way the 4WD system was set up before,” Walter explained. “The differential was continuously adjusting torque split, which made the car change attitude frequently when oversteering. It was very nervous and difficult to drift cleanly because of this, so I asked for a set-up that was totally consistent and user friendly. “If you want to initiate a drift in the new car, you just have to drive up to the limit of adhesion with PSM off, lift off to unsettle the back end, and then get back on the power and balance the car with throttle and steering,” he said. When I put the excessive weight transfer issue to Walter, he nodded his head and explained that one of the changes to the latest rear suspension set-up is stiffer springs and bigger anti-roll bars to specifically counter this. w w w. s o c i e t y l i v i n g m a g a z i n e . c o m

47

ON THE ROAD “It feels both more potent and smoother as well”

The more consistent handling means you can now drive quickly with greater security on unfamiliar roads. “An inherent advantage of the 911’s rearengined layout is the potential to use more rear braking bias than in a front-engined car,” Walter added. “The excessive weight transfer to the front under hard braking with the previous Turbo meant that we could not direct as much of the braking force to the rear as we would have liked.” The suspension changes to the latest Turbo have significantly reduced the weight transfer forward under hard braking, and also the amount of squat under acceleration. So, although the steel and optional PCCB brake system hardware is unchanged, the slightly greater rear bias makes them more effective thanks to the taming of excessive weight transfer and improved suspension control. At a more detailed level, the rear suspension bushes have been stiffened up to control lateral movement better. If you specify the Sport Chrono Package, you also get the new electronically-controlled engine mount system first seen as an option on the latest GT3. The combination of the uprated rear suspension and these engine mounts has had a dramatic effect on the way the Turbo launches from the line in a full bore standing start. “Although the 911 has always had an advantage in traction thanks to its engine position, the torque of the Turbo and its good traction also gave rise to axle tramp,” said Walter. 48

www.societylivingmagazine.com

The uprated rear suspension and active engine mounts have banished axle tramp, and Porsche claim 3.7 seconds for the 0-100km/h sprint with the manual and 3.6 seconds with the PDK. The Sport Chrono Package cuts 0.1 and 0.2 seconds from the base 0-100km/h times of the manual and PDK cars, respectively, which means 3.4 seconds for the fastest variant. Top speed is 312km/h or 193mph. In fact these numbers are conservative as a German car magazine achieved 3.1 seconds with a PDK equipped test car using the Launch Control system that is activated in Sport Plus mode of the Sport Chrono Package. “I have done over 3,000 kilometres with both manual and PDK versions of the new Turbo on the Nurburgring and now I am happy with it,” Walter told me. My next question to him was inevitable, and he smiled as he rolled off the 7min. 39 sec. lap time that he recently clocked with a Turbo PDK Sport Chrono Package. Consider that the current GT2 lap time with Walter at the wheel stands at 7 min. 32 sec. on Cup tyres. “Cup tyres are worth about five seconds a lap here,” he said, “so on similar rubber the new Turbo would not be far behind.” A new design of standard 19-inch wheel is the easiest way to identify the new car, but the optional centre-lock wheel system that Porsche introduced on the GT3 a few months ago is now also a Turbo option. Interestingly, Bridgestone recently introduced a normal high performance road

ON THE ROAD tyre called the Potenza RE050A. The N1 version is Porsche specific and is used on the new Turbo. The surprise is that its grip levels are not far off the Michelin Cup tyre. Being a normal tyre, it has enough tread depth when new to offer good aquaplaning resistance in wet weather conditions. The combination of the responsive twinturbo DFI motor with PDK is a match made in heaven. The take-off from rest, especially in Launch Control mode, is simply sensational. Eager to show off how well it works, Porsche encouraged us to use LC off the starting grid on the pit straight. The Turbo left the line with a microsecond’s chirp of wheelspin and just blasted off down the straight, swapping gears with immense speed and smoothness. I was past the 200km/h mark as I went under the banner, well before the braking threshold for the first corner. Porsche claim 11.6 seconds for the 0-200km/h sprint, and the electronic timing gear at the track confirmed that. PDK really makes a nonsense of struggling with a clutch and manual shifter, especially across the gate, which can unsettle a car being driven on the limit as you have only one hand on the wheel. With this proper paddle shift steering wheel, Porsche have at last fulfilled the true potential of the PDK gearbox. It should be standard and not a cost option!

“In a word, the new engine is brilliant”

w w w. s o c i e t y l i v i n g m a g a z i n e . c o m

49

ON THE ROAD

“You can now drive quickly with greater security on unfamiliar roads”

No wonder then that Porsche quite plainly admit that PDK is now their performance gearbox where the six-speed manual was before. Tiptronic was always the “comfort” option, and never came close to being a true driver’s weapon of choice. Speaking of hard-core driving tools, where the ZF limited slip differential with its 22/27 per cent acceleration/over-run locking action was always available as a stand-alone option, it is now only available as part of the PTV (Porsche Torque Vectoring) system. 50

www.societylivingmagazine.com

PTV electronically controls the application of some braking on the inner rear wheel when the car is cornering hard, countering any tendency towards understeer. This gives the car better turn-in without upsetting its balance. The more I looked at the familiar face of the new Turbo, the more I found it hard to believe how different and better it is to drive. The new engine is dynamite and the chassis is a pure work of art. It may be only 20bhp more powerful, but the way the new Turbo’s chassis can now deploy all

of that power more effectively makes it simply faster and safer on any road or track. The icing on the cake is its decent fuel economy that makes a mockery of competing machinery that requires 25 to 30 per cent more juice to achieve the same performance. Ultimately, the GT3 is still more fun but, if you want a daily driver that can deliver effortless and safe intergalactic speeds in most weather conditions, look no further. This is a poor man’s Bugatti Veyron at a fraction of the cost, and with none of the disadvantages.

ADVERTORIAL

JNBY A natural style and lifestyle JNBY, meaning Just Naturally Be Yourself, is a Chinese brand that originated in 1994 in Hangzhou – the Chinese textile capital. The brand’s philosophy is to not only create a new style for customers but also a new lifestyle, mixing fashion shows with art exhibitions and shop events while also creating fashionable and classic items of clothing with a twist. The clothes are all made with natural materials and are environmentally friendly – cotton, wool and silk are all staple materials for the brand, as well as less well known textiles made of rami, a natural herb. Each item is unique and of exceptional design, with a team of international designers collaborating on both the outside and the inside of the garment. Many of the beautiful items are in fact transformers, meaning that they can start as one look and, simply by wearing it a different way, another look is created. For example, a jacket can be worn three different ways just by turning it inside out, or upside down, all the while remaining stylish and chic. The clothes allow wearers to think beyond the basic function of an item and discover other ways to wear them. With four collections a year for both men and women, including accessories, the brand is unique and innovative, yet stylishly classic. JNBY, located on Calle Muelle de Ribera in Puerto Banús, opposite Astral Bar, opened their first store in Spain in July last year with great success. They feature a distinctive and trendy design in their stores, maintained worldwide, with clothes cleverly hung from arty structures – thus presenting them to their full potential. The store is holding two parties in March: on the 16th there will be a pre-fashion show 3D party at Dreamers, followed by a fashion showcase of the spring/summer collection at Prive on the 26th. Nicki Waterman TOP TRAINER TO THE STARS OFFERS USEFUL ADVICE FOR A HEALTHIER AND FITTER LIFESTYLE – AND VALUABLE TIPS TO LOSE THOSE EXTRA KILOS LOSE WEIGHT AND SHAPE UP WITH THESE FIVE NEW SUPER FOODS It’s pretty common knowledge nowadays that avocados, blueberries and tomatoes are incredibly healthy for you – these super foods have been hyped by nutritionists for so long we’re almost getting a bit bored of them. So we dug deep into our nutritional archive and found a selection of lesser known, supercharged health foods – with the added benefit that all of them will help you to get into shape for summer (if it ever returns)! Believe us: this is what Posh and Co will be nibbling on next!

1. CABBAGE

Okay, we realise that this sounds incredibly lame. After all, most of us have tried the cabbage soup diet back in the day and given up after noticing it makes us, err, pass wind a little too often. But did you know that cabbage can help your body to combat various types of cancer, improve your immune system and purify your blood? Not to mention that this clever veg is a natural appetite suppressant and has a ridiculously low calorie content! We say get back on the cabbage! The benefits outweigh the “side effects” by far.

2. BARLEY

This cereal grain is a true multi-talent. It can help to reduce cholesterol and blood sugar and is said to be beneficial for sufferers of type-two diabetes. Barley also has high levels of antioxidants, which help to prevent breast cancer. And, best of all, the grains are incredibly versatile – you can use them in soups or stews, as a rice substitute or even as a breakfast cereal.

3. COCONUT OIL

Coconut oil used to be slated for being too fatty, but celebrities like Jennifer Aniston have been cottoning on to its multiple health benefits. Not only is it cholesterol free, but coconut oil is also packed with balanced omega oils. It is said to help fight heart disease and also helps with diabetes and digestive problems. The ingenious oil also raises your metabolism and helps to burn fat more effectively – it doesn’t really get much better than this, does it?

4. CACAO NIBS

We thought you might like this one – it certainly got us chocolate lovers at Society Living very excited. Like chocolate, cacao has a high concentration of antioxidants, which helps to lower blood pressure and prevent strokes. And because it contains the same happy chemicals our brain releases when we fall in love, it can stabilise and improve your mood when you’re feeling a bit cranky. Well, we’re certainly in love with that idea, so sprinkle the crushed nibs onto your breakfast or enjoy them as a treat. Cacao tastes as good as chocolate, but has none of the naughty stuff that's in the processed product, so it doesn't have to be a guilty pleasure.

5. GOJI BERRIES

Okay, these are fairly well known thanks to celebrity snackers like Mischa Barton, but we thought we had to mention them for their sheer amazingness. Goji berries contain more beta-carotene than carrots, more iron than a steak and more vitamin C than oranges. You can nibble on the dried fruits as a tasty snack or prepare them as tea – put 10-15 gojis into hot water and let them soak for 15 minutes. Goji berries are also fantastic for fighting cellulite. Impressive, huh?

HEALTH & FITNESS SWAP SHOP… A MOZZARELLA AND TOMATO SALAD WITH 986 CALORIES AND 67 GRAMS OF FAT FOR… A SALAD NICOISE WITH 400 CALORIES AND 5 GRAMS OF FAT

CELEBRITY FITNESS TIP Alanis Morissette, 35, says, “I have CELEBRITY DIET TIP sweated off almost a stone and a half (nine kilograms) since blowing out as a result of over-indulgence for a good nine months. I do between a half hour to an hour of light weights, running, biking, swimming, probably five times a week. I also love to kickbox and dance – I’m back to what I was born to be, at my best. I used to get out of bed in the morning and things were aching, and I just thought, this is what happens when you get into your 30s. But now I jump out of bed and have so much energy; I feel very alive. Even after a workout, I feel like if I rest a little bit I could go out dancing all night, so that’s exciting.”

Twenty-nine-year-old American TV star Jessica Simpson had a unique way of shedding pounds when she wanted quick weight loss. When she wanted her old body back she simply went into her kitchen and detoxed all the junk food. “She just got a trash bag and cleared it right out,” said one of Simpson’s friends.

SNOOZE TO LOSE

WHAT’S NEW? Ki Fit System: A high-tech armband, worn day and night, that measures how many calories you burn, how much exercise you've done and how well you've slept. You register your device online, where you keep daily food diaries. The subscription gives you access to further diet and exercise information, and offers individually tailored advice (£149, www.kiperformance.co.uk).

If you want to lose three to five pounds (1.5 to 2.5 kilograms) from your tummy in a few weeks, it may help to hit the hay by 10pm. An early bedtime helps reduce your levels of the stress hormone cortisol, shown to encourage fat stores around the abdomen. Sleep helps regulate cortisol, while a lack of it leads to higher levels of the hormone. Cortisol is at a natural low between 10pm and 2am.

NEWSFLASH… Have you run out of energy? Try beetroot juice before you work out. It can help you exercise for longer, as its natural nitrate content stops your muscles from tiring out so quickly. Check out Beet It Organic Beetroot Juice: www.holland&barrett.co.uk (£1.49).

MICROWAVE YOUR BACON If you can’t resist a slice of bacon now and then, try to avoid frying it – cook it in the microwave instead. Bacon contains nitrosamines – chemical compounds that have been linked to cancer – but microwaved bacon contains only 10 per cent of the nitrosamines of fried bacon. Tomatoes also help to neutralise these compounds, so opt for a BLT instead when having a bacon sarnie.

YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED I’m off on holiday in two weeks’ time and, despite living at the gym, I can’t get rid of my flabby tummy. How can I get a flat stomach – quickly? Nicki says: We store fat under our skin and around our organs, which is why many people carry weight around the middle. So, use more calories than you consume a day, or they will be stored as fat. Combat bloating, commonly caused by sluggish digestion, by avoiding refined carbohydrates for the next fortnight, especially sugar (cakes, biscuits) and wheat (bread and pasta). Replace high-fat and bad-carb foods with more protein, especially lean protein like chicken, fish or tofu. Have a fat-free yoghurt every morning with a little honey – it will aid digestion and is rich in calcium, which helps you absorb less fat in your diet. In the day, stick to thick soups, egg-white omelettes, fish and vegetables. Keep hydrated by drinking herbal teas, especially dandelion, which helps reduce water retention. I’d love to hear from you, so email me your questions, tips and diet success stories to me at www.nickiwaterman.com

HEADSTYL

The company’s philosophy is to take clients from baldness to boldness, with the understanding that, while they cannot stop prejudices against baldness in society, they can stop it happening to their clients. The Headstyl team can cover male pattern baldness, and camouflage scars and shade areas that need treatment to make hair appear denser, while delivering a personal and caring service. The team speak every day with men suffering from hair loss to understand how it affects different people and to ensure they give the best care and service possible. Headstyl are offering an array of wonderful make-over luxury weekends in London, San Francisco and Marbella where hair loss sufferers will be treated by placing specialist pigments on their scalps to give the appearance of natural hair follicles. The mild form of tattooing used by the team at Headstyl is performed by one of their highly skilled practitioners who match each client’s skin and hair tone with pinpoint accuracy to give amazing results, leaving an end result looking as if the individual has chosen to cut their hair short and close to the head. Their partner will receive a weekend of treatments including massage and manicures, while five-star accommodation is also included in the package.

An innovative solution to hair loss ith claims that 40 per cent of married couples would rather their spouse be overweight than bald, and a staggering 57 per cent of women revealing that they are not attracted to men with thinning hair, it is no wonder that men feel insecure when they start losing their hair. When it comes to baldness men are now spending small fortunes on transplants and wigs which can sometimes look unrealistic and fake.

There is an innovative solution to cover baldness, however – Headstyl, a company run by British men who overcame their baldness by using the internationally acclaimed Artistic Hair Simulation technique. The company is essentially run by hair loss sufferers for hair loss sufferers so they understand how clients feel and can assist them with all their needs while campaigning to educate people about the physiological effects of hair loss.

Ask the surgeon ... Breast reduction CONTINUING OUR REGULAR SERIES OF ARTICLES ON LATEST TECHNIQUES AND TRENDS IN COSMETIC SURGERY, DR ALEXANDER ASLANI, DIRECTOR OF THE CIRUMED CLINIC AND CHIEF CONSULTANT PLASTIC SURGEON AT THE QUIRON HOSPITAL, ANSWERS SOME COMMON QUESTIONS

Q A

What is the possibility of scar-sparing techniques in breast reduction?

This is possible for some, but not for all breasts. Patients usually ask me what is the best technique for breast reduction and I tell them there is none, because every breast reduction, just as every breast, is different. I generally recommend that patients looking for a breast reduction bear one thing in mind: the shape of the breast after a breast reduction is more important than the scars, because this is what determines patient happiness at the end of the day. Bear in mind that breast reduction scars tend to look red and “angry” initially, but this does eventually fade in most cases. Small scar revisions to touch-up little imperfections in the aspect of the scar can be done, usually as office procedures, normally a year after the operation.

Q

Is it true that I have to wear a sports bra after a breast reduction?

A Yes, absolutely: the sports bra is essential. I recommend wearing one for six weeks. The purpose of the bra is to maintain the shape of the breast after breast reduction surgery.

Q How long is the hospital stay after a breast reduction?

A Normally one to two nights. I use drains after breast reduction, and your hospital stay will depend on the drainage. Extensive breast reductions with large tissue resections may lead to longer recovery periods due to fluid shifts.

Q

Is a breast reduction dangerous for my nipple?

A Breast reduction does involve repositioning of the nipple. Depending on the size of the breast, the nipple may have to be positioned quite a large distance, and the larger this distance is, the more impaired nipple perfusion will possibly be. However, impaired nipple

76

www.societylivingmagazine.com

Q

What is the difference between breast uplift and breast reduction?

A The difference is, in many cases, merely the quantity of tissue reduced; the techniques tend to be very similar. A breast uplift does also involve a limited amount of breast tissue resection, normally in the lower breast pole. So even after a breast uplift the breast will naturally be slightly smaller.

Q

Does social insurance cover the costs of breast reduction? perfusion is a possibility but not very frequent. There are a couple of different breast reduction techniques available, and choice of the right technique is an important factor in protecting the nipple. The main risk for nipple perfusion is smoking: a breast reduction in heavy smokers can imply serious risks to nipple perfusion. Problems with the nipples in breast reduction may occur, but are exceedingly rare.

Q What is the expected recovery time after a breast reduction?

A Depending on resection weight and technique, roughly a week. But, clearly, that depends on patients.

Q Is breast reduction painful? A Normally not. Some techniques involve suspension sutures of breast tissue where the breast tissue is suspended to the breast muscle. This can be unpleasant in the first few days after the breast reduction but is very beneficial from an aesthetic point of view (which I guess is what counts in the long term). Normally pain is not a major reason for complaints after breast reduction surgery.

A That depends on your insurance and country of origin. Generally breast reduction is in the catalogue of social insurance, but chances are generally slim for moderate resection weights. With public health systems struggling to fund basic care, unfortunately operations out of the “plastic surgery” catalogue tend to be thrown overboard first.

Q

Can I combine a breast reduction with a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty)?

A Yes, you can but, depending on resection weight that can possibly be a fairly extensive operation. Sometimes (autologous) blood transfusion may be advisable for this. I Dr. Alexander Aslani is director and chief surgeon of the department of plastic, aesthetic and reconstructive surgery at Hospital Quiron in Málaga. www.quiron.es His private practice is the Cirumed Clinic in Marbella. ollowing two months of renovations, Marbella old town favourite ZoZoi has re-opened its doors with a fresh new layout including an open kitchen and a glass roof with heating in the enchanting courtyard terrace – so the space can be utilised all year round. Owner Maryse and her friendly staff warmly greet customers while chef Benoit produces culinary delights to tempt the taste buds.

Apart from the restaurant revamp, the menu has also been refreshed to include several lighter options, a list of superb daily specials and some fabulous sharing dishes, ideal for friends starting a night out in the charming restaurant before heading to a bar in the old town. We did exactly that, as three of us dined at the restaurant, and we were just dying to try some of the delicious new dishes. Some of the classics are still on the menu – including the ZoZoi tartare and the roast rack of lamb with honey and rosemary crust – which have people returning again and again, but now there is also a good selection of new dishes such as the Asian salad with crispy duck and a gourmet pizza and risotto selection. The new bread selection including pizza bread and a choice of different foccacia – garlic, tomato and chilli – which we sampled enlivened our appetites for the rest of the meal. We decided on a starter to share which included Thai crab fish cakes, caramelised ribs, tempura prawns, arancinis, stuffed mushrooms, hummus, olives and the ZoZoi tartare, which we loved as it included many of our favourite starters as a small portion plus some tantalising new additions.

For our mains we thought it best to pick three different dishes so we could share a varied selection. While my companions chose monkfish and prawn spedini accompanied by risotto with tomato and rosemary, and parmesan crusted chicken Milanese served with ratatouille lasagne, I decided to try one of the new pizzas. They are, however, no ordinary Italian-style pizzas as chef Benoit has taken influences from his travels around the globe to bring a unique pizza experience to diners, taking what would normally be deemed as comfort food into a culinary gourmet treat with a twist. With this in mind I chose the chicken chermoula, feta, red peppers and rocket pizza out of the wide selection and it really was a fabulous treat indeed. After some delicious savoury dishes we ended with a sumptuous lemon polenta cake

and the traditional banoffe pie to share, sweetening the evening off superbly. The restaurant has always offered something for every palette and now it also offers a great selection for larger tables wanting a lighter bite with a selection of fine wines. As always the service was impeccable and the staff attentive, while the atmosphere was relaxed and vibrant – despite the obvious changes to the restaurant, it still retains its previous charm and warmth.

ROUND-UP OF BUSINESS, CHARITY, CULTURAL AND OTHER GENERAL NEWS FROM THE COSTA DEL SOL AND ELSEWHERE IN SPAIN

OPEN DE ANDALUCÍA EUROPEAN TOUR EVENT RETURNS TO PARADOR The first of three European Tour events on the Costa del Sol this year will be held at Málaga’s venerable Parador course from 25 to 28 March. The Open de Andalucía will also be the first 2010 Tour event of the season in Europe, after the early months of the schedule covered South Africa, the Middle East, Asia, the US and Morocco. The tournament was unveiled during a press conference last month at the Parador attended by Málaga-born star Miguel Ángel Jiménez, whose company Fade & Draw Target has promoted and organised the event since 2007 and who won the 1999 Andalucian Open at the Parador; the regional Andalucian Minister for Commerce, Tourism and Sport, Luciano Alonso (the Junta de Andalucía is the main title sponsor), and the Paradores president, Miguel Martínez. This will be the ninth edition of the tournament and the third at the Parador – Vijay Singh won in 1992 when it was known as the Turespaña Masters Open de Andalucía. Lee Westwood was victorious at Aloha in 2007,

Thomas Levet won at the same course in 2008 and Søren Kjeldsen will be the defending champion after his victory in Sevilla last year. Also accompanying Jiménez at the Parador to lend their support to the region’s promotional campaign were fellow local players Pablo Martín (winner of the first event of the 2010 European Tour, the Alfred Dunhill Championship), Azahara Muñoz (who won her first tournament as a pro, the Madrid Ladies Masters on the 2009 Ladies European Tour), Juan Quirós (a three-time winner on the European Senior Tour), Ana Belén Sánchez (a former LET champion) and Laura Cabanillas (victorious in the final event of the 2009 national Banesto Tour for women pros). The other two tournaments scheduled for the Coast this year are the inaugural Andalucía Masters at Valderrama from 28 to 31 October; and the Volvo World Match Play Championship at Finca Cortesín on a date to be confirmed.

COSTA PETS Marbella-based photographer Toni Cochrane would like to hear from owners interested in having their pets photographed with a view to being featured in future issues. Contact her on Tel. 952 865 509 or visit tcfotografia.com This month, we move away from our more “traditional” featured pets… with a great shot of Connie and Cappucino. III Meanwhile, we are pleased to offer space in these pages to Costa associations looking after and trying to find homes for abandoned or mistreated animals. If you would like contact details for your association included in this new section, email: editorial@societylivingmagazine.com I ANBAD: The Asociacion Nacional por el Bienestar de los Animales Domesticos (ANBAD) is a registered animal charity based on the Costa del Sol whose prime objective is to save the most severely mistreated animals from the “killing station” in Los Barrios. According to the association, “If we could rescue 15 dogs every month… we together with ACE (Mijas) could stop them killing the dogs. They don’t even feed the dogs, because after 21 days they kill them anyway. It takes an enormous amount of courage and commitment to take on such a task. Our small team of volunteers work tirelessly seven days a week, including the holiday periods, to save the lives of as many dogs as possible.” ANBAD’s premises are presently located on privately owned land in Marbella which only has a limited capacity to accommodate a maximum of 20 dogs; and – like other animal charities – they have the additional problems of lack of a voluntary workforce and limited funding. They are working with other animal organisations in Germany and Finland to find good homes for the animals. Anyone who can help (be it food, medicine, time or donations) can contact Susanna on Tel. 906 778 731; susanna_mad@yahoo.de; www.anbad.wordpress.com I F.A.M.A.: The Foundation for Abandoned and Mistreated Animals is holding another fund-raising race night at Restaurante El Potro on 13 March, where guests can enjoy a 92

buffet dinner plus half a bottle of wine for €18 a person, with El Potro donating €5 for every diner to F.A.M.A. Meanwhile, this month we feature Sandy, a delightful boy who is extremely kind, affectionate and loyal. He came to F.A.M.A, a year ago when he was found on a river bed starving and “would love to be in a home where he can receive lots of love and affection. Sandy is approximately two years old and is great with other dogs.” If you are interested in Sandy, contact Pat Coleman on Tel. 620 354 885; or if you are looking to adopt a different dog visit the adoption tab at www.f-a-m-a.net.

I SEPE: The Sociedad Española para la Protección de los Equinos is attempting to bring in legislation on carriage horses throughout Spain, via the national and regional governments. Whenever they have received numerous complaints from tourists and residents, they have also approached the relevant town halls, including Marbella. President Tony Bugg has asked anyone wanting to “help keep up the pressure” to check out the society’s website: www.sepeonline.net I MAPS: The Malaga Animal Protection Society (M.A.P.S.) launches its Charity Golf Circuit for 2010 with the first competition at the Marbella Golf and Country Club on Sunday 25 April – for a fee of €65 including shared buggy and a buffet lunch, with numerous prizes and a charity auction. Players can register by emailing sales@mapss.eu or by phoning Rachelle on Tel. 689 604 966. All profits are ear-marked for the society: www.mapss.eu I ADANA: Open from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday and 10am to 2pm on weekends and public holidays, the Adana kennels always have dogs seeking good homes. TaeKwon-Do is a traditional martial art from Korea which was created by General Choi Hong Hi (ninth dan). It consists of three parts: sparring, which is continuous combat, gaining points against your opponent: patterns, a series of offensive and defensive movements against an imaginary opponent; and breaking – that is, breaking boards using either a punch or a kick. Special dinner in aid of Haiti disaster victims Chateau Mona Lisa was the venue for a well-attended dinner organised by Charlotte Fisher, Sandra del Rio and Lucas McKenzie, to support the people of devasted Haiti. Raffle prizes were donated by various sponsors; Paul, whose cousins were still missing, made a heartfelt speech urging everyone to “dig deep into their pockets”; and the evening was rounded off with live music by DJs Nilo and Juan Patata. A total of €3,153 was raised on the night, of which 100 per cent will be sent to Doctors without Frontiers.

Glamorous gala evening to promote Marbella, Marbella campaign The Marbella, Marbella campaign, initiated by composer Dario Poli, kicked off 2010 in great style at the Hotel Incosol, where guests enjoyed a fashion showcase of the Agustin Torralbos couture winter collection, aptly named Marbella, Marbella, and performances by Steven Lloyd-Morgan and Yanela Brooks. The main sponsors were the Danish bank Nykredit, Fischer Car Group (Walter Fischer is pictured lending his support to the event) and Solkysten magazine. A delighted guest whose tombola ticket won first prize was able to choose a dress from the Agustin Torralbos collection shown on the evening.
