Life is a beach – at last!

t’s June and that means one thing. Well, several things actually but the one which so many of us have been waiting for, through a rather sodden winter and a spluttering start to spring, is the start of the beach club season. When it comes to throwing a party, especially an über-chic celebration by the sea, Marbella is the crème de la crème – with few rivals anywhere in the world. We’re talking party time in capital letters here. Last month, for example, we were already able to get into full festive flow with the renowned White Party at NIKKI BEACH and a dazzling celebration at OCEAN CLUB, as well as lavish launches at TIBU and PANGEA in Banús – and the revelry continues this month with the eagerly awaited annual summer extravaganza at BUDDHA BEACH (11 June). As always, Society Living was, and will be, there to record the most memorable moments of summer for our definitive Society section. And not only beachside. Bryan Ferry, the “Electric Lounge Lizard” himself, is performing this month at a very select party at Marbella Club to mark Stephen

Webster’s first year in Marbella; and dance band Faithless will be in concert at the Puerto Banús bullring in July. In fact, we have 15 tickets to give away to their concert – check Noticeboard for details. Of course, it is not only about joining in the fun: it is also important to look the part. To that end, our bumper Fashion Flair section this issue features the latest hot summer styles and a sneak preview of the eye-catching swimwear, funky day-time outfits and elegant evening wear available at the Coast’s top boutiques. Then, perhaps most important of all, celebrity trainer Tracy Anderson offers a timely threeweekly meal plan for our female readers to achieve the bikini body of their dreams! For the men, not all of us will be able to pull up in the beach club car park in a glistening supercar but, if we could permit ourselves that luxury, we would no doubt be more than pleased to do so behind the steering wheel of an Audi R8 Spyder – with its breathtaking looks and spine-tingling dynamics. I Fans of horror movies will like Ninety, soon to be filmed in New Mexico about a psychotic serial killer who sets out to kill ninety people. Saw director Darren Bousman is directing the movie, written by Scott Milam – Bousman was behind three of the Saw movies and insiders say Ninety will be just as gruesome. I Russell Brand is developing a remake of the 1981 classic Arthur which previously starred Dudley Moore as the alcoholic playboy set to make millions if he marries an heiress chosen by his family – the plan goes awry when Arthur falls in love with a working class waitress. It is well known for its humorous lines and brilliant portrayal of the alcoholic playboy by Moore, so Brand will have big shoes to fill. Helen Mirren has signed up to co-star as Arthur’s valet, previously played by John Gielgud. I A host of stars have signed up to star in the romantic comedy Midnight in Paris, which follows a family travelling to the city and explores the illusion that people believe a different life from their own is always better. Included in the cast are Owen Wilson, Kathy Bates, Rachel McAdams, Marion Cottilard and Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, France’s “first lady”, in a cameo role. The film is directed by Woody Allen, who also has a film out at the end of summer entitled You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger and starring Anthony Hopkins, Antonio Banderas, Naomi Watts (King Kong, 21 Grams) and Freida Pinto (Slumdog Millionaire). I Children and fans of animated films will be pleased to learn that a sequel to 2001’s Monster’s, Inc will be released at the end of the year. I The Green Hornet about a vigilante crime fighter has been pushed back to January 2011 and will be shown in 3D. The film stars Seth Rogen and Cameron Diaz. I Amanda Seyfried (Mamma Mia!) and Shiloh Fernandez have signed up to star in Catherine Hardwicke’s (Twilight) gothic horror remake of Little Red Riding Hood entitled Girl with a Red Riding Hood, about a woman in a medieval village being terrorised by a werewolf. Warner Bros is the studio behind the film. I Ridley Scott has released the plot details to his next Alien film, which will be a prequel to the 1979 classic Alien. Set in 2085, 30 years before Sigourney Weaver’s character Ellen Ripley, the film will explore the Space Jockey. I Eric Heisserer is the new screenwriter for the next Final Destination film, taking the franchise to five movies. No plots or actors have been revealed yet. I Friends fans will be disappointed to learn that Courtney Cox Arquette has definitely ruled out

Movie of the Month Twilight Saga: Eclipse The third instalment of the hugely popular films sees the return of many original cast members as well as some new faces. The film begins with a series of unsolved murders plaguing Seattle as Bella (Kristen Stewart) and Edward (Robert Pattinson) start applying for colleges – with Bella explaining that she wants to see Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner), the werewolf who is also her friend. With Edward worried that she will be hurt, Bella assures him Jacob would never hurt her. Meanwhile, Edward’s “sister” Alice Cullen sees a vision that Victoria, a vampire hunting Bella, has returned to Forks, their home-town. The Cullens must now join forces with the werewolves to protect Bella and combat the threat of the hungry newborn vampires that have been killing people in Seattle. As Edward, Bella and Jacob hide in the mountains, Bella kisses Jacob to stop him from joining the battle. With her feelings now torn between the vampire and the werewolf, Bella must chose who has stolen her heart. Bryce Dallas Howard stars as Victoria, taking over from Rachelle Lefevre who portrayed her in the first two movies; while Peter Facinelli, Elizabeth Reaser, Ashley Greene and Kellan Lutz return as the Cullen family. Based on the novel by Stephanie Meyer, the film is directed by David Slade. the possibility of a film about the six well-loved characters. Many of us have waited with bated breath since production was wrapped on the TV show in 2004 for a film to be made but will now just have to settle for continuous re-runs of the show on TV. I Bruce Willis has reportedly signed up for Die Hard 5 – writer Skip Woods is in negotiations to pen the fifth sequel and Willis would star as New York City cop John McClane, who always seems to get caught in sticky situations. Willis starts shooting another film, Kane and Lynch, at the end of summer and will be seen in Red in October this year alongside veteran actor Morgan Freeman. I Producers are in talks with Tommy Lee Jones after Will Smith signed up to once again play Agent Jay in Men In Black 3; negotiations are being held with Jones and Josh Brolin to star in the third film about the alien-fighting agents, which will be released in May 2012. I Samuel L. Jackson has reportedly got a perk package signed into future contracts – the actor wants a break from filming for two days a week to go and play golf. ance band Faithless are holding a concert in the Puerto Banús bullring on 31 July for the first time. Kings of Production are presenting the L.I.V.E concert with headliners Faithless, bassline trio Platnum and reggae pioneers Black Slate, and Levi Lewis and Tall Paul spinning tracks until the early hours. Doors will open at 4pm and the concert will start at 6pm – the concert is in aid of the L.I.V.E charity, which helps under-privileged children. Pop princess Kylie Minogue has said she can see herself performing even when she has a

purple rinse, and wants her career to continue until she is an old lady with dyed hair. The 41-year-old has just announced the release of her 11th studio album Aphrodite and says she is a thrill seeker who never plans ahead. the label for almost 40 years and have sold an estimated 300 million albums through the company, but they are now in talks with Universal to sign a multi-million dollar deal. Take That star Gary Barlow is in talks to be Queen Elizabeth’s personal party planner when she turns 85 next April and for the Diamond Jubilee celebrations in 2012. The singer/songwriter went to Buckingham Palace for discussions about organising the lavish events after the Queen was made aware of his charity work and the great celebrity parties he has arranged before.

Damon Albarn has told fans Blur plan to record more one–off tracks in the near future, stressing that, while they may have to wait, the songs will come eventually. Albarn, currently busy with the Gorillaz, who have just announced a UK arena tour, explained that the fourpiece would reconvene soon and it wouldn’t be too long till another record was released. The band recorded their first full song since 2003, Fool’s Day, for the recent Record Store Day celebrations. Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher has a new guise as a movie producer – the rock star took his first production, a big-screen biopic of The Beatles’ final years, to Cannes film festival. In partnership with Revolution Films Gallagher revealed that the production is based on the 1972 book by Richard DiLello, The Longest Cocktail Party: An Insider’s Diary of the Beatles, Their Million Dollar Apple Empire and Its Wild Rise and Fall, which is a favourite of both Gallagher brothers. With the Pussycat Dolls disbanding and Girls Aloud showing signs they may follow, other girl groups are paving the way to stardom. The Saturdays have had six top 10 hits and released two albums with great success – let’s hope they don’t also end up arguing and not speaking like the other girl bands of late. Girls Aloud’s Kimberly Walsh denies claims of a conflict between the girls but says it’s inevitable that they have grown apart. It seems ‘80s pop star Sinitta might be feeling a little left out and hurt as she has recently claimed she doubts music mogul Simon Cowell will get hitched. Saying that if he is true to himself he won’t marry fiancée Mezhgan Hussainy, Sinitta could be a little jealous – perhaps as a former girlfriend and fiancée of Simon she wishes it was her he was head over heels in love with? Fans of Julie Andrews were left fuming when she performed a concert at London’s O2 Arena last month. The concert, entitled The Gift of Music, was Dame Julie’s first UK performance in over 30 years and featured songs from The Sound of Music, Mary Poppins and other musicals which made her name. Unfortunately the concert didn’t go very well, with fans complaining that she didn’t sing very much and ended the concert reading passages from a children’s book that she had written. With tickets selling for £140 it’s not surprising they were unimpressed!

Five new CD releases Scissor Sisters: Night Walk – 28 June The band return with their third album – a dynamic dance album. After having a massive hit in 2006 with I Don’t Feel Like Dancing they say the new album is really about who they are. The lead single, out on 20 June, is entitled Fire with Fire.

Oasis: Time Flies – 14 June The British super-group who split last August are releasing a singles collection featuring every release made by the band including Whatever and Lord Don’t Slow Me Down. A deluxe version will also be released and will feature 36 videos the band made during their 15-year career and their last ever recorded concert. Christina Aguilera: Bionic – 7 June Singer-songwriter Christina Aguilera is releasing her fourth full-length English studio album since 2006’s Back to Basics. The album is described as a unique mix of many genres and styles of music. She was recently criticised for trying to be too much like Lady Gaga and Madonna, so Aguilera’s new album is sure to hit the right notes with loyal fans.

Eminem: Recovery – 14 June The upcoming seventh studio album from the rapper contains more songs than his previous studio albums and has been described by Eminem himself as more emotionally driven than its predecessor. It was originally titled Relapse 2 and a follow on to Relapse, but the singer decided to change it when he realised he wanted to make a completely different album than the earlier one.

Ozzy Osbourne: Scream – 14 June The 10th studio album by English heavy metal singer Ozzy Osbourne is released on 15 June and is the first album of original material by Osbourne to not feature Zakk Wylde on guitar, since The Ultimate Sin in 1986, or Mike Bordin on drums, since Ozzmosis in 1995. It was originally titled Soul Sucka, but Osbourne decided on Scream after negative feedback from fans. The first single from the album, Let Me Hear You Scream, debuted on CSI: New York on 14 April. Buddha Beach offers some great live music events this summer including ‘80s chart toppers Imagination, featuring flamboyant lead singer Leee John, playing live on 17 July . The band were well known for their hits Just an Illusion, Bodytalk and Flashback.

In this exclusive interview with Nicola McGeorge, he talks about politics, getting hijacked and even Lady Gaga. What was the record that changed your life and why? My first album (Roxy Music in 1972) changed my life in that it was the beginning of my life in music.

If you could record a duet with anyone who would it be and why? There are so many great singers about that this is a difficult one to answer! Alicia Keys, Lady Gaga and Eminem all spring to mind.

After the Avalon album you were quoted as saying that you hoped your masterpiece was still ahead of you – is this still the case? I always hope that the masterpiece is on the horizon, and in this case my new album is nearing completion and will be released in September.

Whom do you respect and admire in the music industry currently? One of the interesting areas at the moment is the world of dance music, and I have been collaborating recently with several artists from this genre, including DJ Hell, Groove Armada and Fred Falke.

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT Is this your first visit to Marbella? If not, what were your impressions on past visits? Marbella has a wonderful location, in one of the loveliest parts of the Mediterranean. I love visiting Spain and enjoy all aspects of Spanish culture. I also love being by the sea, and I have stayed in some wonderful hotels in the area – the Marbella Club having particularly fond memories for me. It must have been truly terrifying to be on the hijacked airplane. Did it change your life? It was quite an amazing experience – rather like a scene from an action movie, one of those events in one’s life that hopefully happens only once. You had a small acting part in a film, Breakfast on Pluto… will you continue to further your acting career? I have no plans for the moment in that direction, but I am always open to offers! I would, however, be very interested in scoring a movie in the not-too-distant future. How do you feel about the election results? You have met David Cameron… what are your thoughts on him? Yes, I have met our new PM David Cameron on a few occasions and was very impressed by his charm and intelligence. I wish him the best of luck with what is a very difficult job. How did you and Stephen Webster become friends? I first met him in London a few years ago – he very kindly asked me to perform at the opening of one of his stores, which was held in the Wallace collection. We then became firm friends, and I subsequently did another show for him in Kazakhstan, which as you can imagine was rather exciting for someone who had never performed in such a remote place.

e often talk about Marbella as a bustling hub of exclusive properties, glamorous parties and chic boutiques and restaurants but there is another side to the town which is just as important – and prominent. The people of Marbella, and the Costa del Sol in general, are extremely generous when it comes to supporting worthy causes, everything from the heart foundation, cancer care, drug dependency and AIDS to abandoned animals and, further afield, under-privileged children around the world. If you would like to become involved in any of the many different charities on the Coast, I will be happy to speak to you and give you some guidance about what they all do and the one, or ones, you feel you could best help. In the meantime, I would definitely recommend a very interesting outing on 5 June to a beautiful finca (estate) between Málaga and Antequera. It has been organised on behalf of Amsudan (an association helping to reconstruct the war-devastated south of Sudan, and thousands of children in the care of missionaries) by its president Juan Orbaneja and other friends and supporters, and will include lunch, music, raffles and a horse show – all for just €50. There will be buses travelling from the coast, and we have tickets available in our office. I’ve been before and it really is a lot of fun and a great day out in the country. I have been to similar events but this one will be special; a lot of my friends are involved. Another dedicated charity supporter is Isabel García, president of the Fuerte hotel group in Marbella, who is very active in the HorizonteProyecto Hombre organisation, which helps people with dependency problems and campaigns for drug dependency prevention and social integration within the community. Marbella Rotary Club – of which I am the current

REAL ESTATE IMPRESARIO, INDEFATIGABLE PARTY-GOER, PATRON OF THE ARTS, GENEROUS CHARITY SUPPORTER… KRISTINA SZEKELY IS THE QUEEN OF MARBELLA SOCIETY president – is backing her efforts and, after a very successful fund-raising year for charity, we were delighted recently to donate €3,000 to Horizonte, as well as €10,000 to the Colegio Francisco Echamendi in Colonia de El Ángel. One of Rotary’s main events is the annual summer gala, where we usually raise the most funds for charity, and this year it returns to Finca La Concepción on 9 July. Last year we had over 400 people, and I’m sure it will be another magical evening. In the meantime, we always have some interesting speakers at our weekly Rotary meetings, with Tomás Ramírez giving an excellent conference last month about symbolism, dating to before the time of Adam and Eve. There are various business women’s groups on the Coast, and last month I attended two of the main ones: the Asociación de Mujeres Empresarias at the Marbella Club; and Red de Mujeres Emprendedoras de Marbella at the Don Pepe hotel, where the mayoress, Angeles Muñoz, gave us a fascinating insight into her career. She said there were still difficulties being a woman in the predominantly man’s world of politics, and recalled how, when she was campaigning in the Marbella municipal elections in 2007, she was often referred to disparagingly as “La Rubia” (“The Blonde”). She said people tended to overlook her qualifications: the fact that she is a highly qualified doctor, who had to sit for civil service exams just to gain a place in the health system; and that she had already been in politics

for 12 years, including prominent positions in Andalucía and nationally. I was happy to be present at the presentation at Puente Romano of a renowned lawyer who has joined the Martínez-Echevarría, Pérez y Ferrero Abogados firm in Marbella. As a prosecutor for the Audiencia Nacional court for 30 years, Ignacio Gordillo tried some of the most celebrated cases in Spain, from ETA terrorism to the Rumasa financial scandal, so he brings the advantage of being “on the other side of the fence”. What a great compliment it is to Marbella that such an important personality has moved to our town. He was formally presented by leading Spanish journalist and broadcaster (Onda Cero) Carlos Herrera. By the way I was with him and Mariló, his wife, at the April Fair in Sevilla; she is the presenter of a very good programme on TVE 1 every morning from Monday to Friday. They make a great couple and had one of the lively “casetas”. It is always a great opportunity to move from one caseta to another, catching up with friends, and Sevilla is such a lovely city, with a beautiful historic old town, great restaurants and now even closer to the Costa del Sol thanks to the high-speed AVE rail link. It’s always funny how people come up to me to mention that they want to sell a property, or buy one, sometimes in the middle of flamenco in the feria at two or three in the morning! I will never say it is the wrong timing but I try to get their phone number. Some people say San Isidro is the most spectacular annual fair in Spain – two weeks of festive bullfight, etc., in Madrid – but I prefer the April Fair in Sevilla. Once again it was a highlight of the year, so colourful, beautiful and fun. An interesting conference held by Marbella jeweller Antonio Seijo covered the subject of precious stones. His passion was obvious as he talked about the history of stones, their various colours and types – the how and why of it all was absolutely amazing! Antonio actually works on the designs as well as running his jewellery store. On the social scene, I enjoyed a magnificent wedding at Madrid’s Villa Magna hotel, where Joaquin and Julia were married in a moving ceremony in the hotel garden, presided over by a judge, after a 16-year engagement! Joaquin’s five grown-up children were there with them on what was a perfect afternoon, with the sun setting as they said their vows. On the business front, as I have mentioned before, we have some well-priced apartments (under €500,000) available at La Corniche in Nueva Andalucía and Señorio de Guadalmina, in San

Pedro de Alcántara (around €350.000). They are well worth investing in for rental now, with a profit of 50 per cent in the future – for a potential resale profit. We have a 10-bedroom, frontline beach villa on the Golden Mile which is ideal for conferences, weddings, birthdays, anniversaries and other special events. It is very private, not overlooked by any other property, a Los Angeles-style house of the kind where celebrities like to escape for a break. We can offer the whole range of complementary services… music, chefs, staff, video conference equipment. The property market is definitely picking up. It is true that some owners are becoming more resistant – before, you could get 30 per cent off the asking price while now it’s more like 10 or 15 per cent – but this shows the market is strengthening. There are still wealthy people looking and buying properties, especially from the Scandinavian and Benelux countries, Great Britain, and Germany, and a few Russians and some clients from the Middle East. In fact, some of the people who invested in Dubai are coming back to Marbella. They are still buying large villas and, of course, people negotiate like always! The average price of a good villa is between 1.5 million and three millions euros, and we specialise in the most luxurious and stunning villas. I think a lot of clients are going to take advantage of our beautiful summer period and interesting offers, which always puts people in a positive frame of mind. Compared to last year, the market is three times as good. The stock market is going up, the political scene in Europe is straightening itself out, Spain has just had its first quarter out of recession, and the win by the Conservatives in the UK should make a difference, even though there is a hung parliament. In short, things are getting back to normal. I read the other day that “crisis” in Greek means “decision time”, and a lot of people are making decisions and going forward. The recession has sadly forced some companies out of business but those left behind will be stronger for it and able to face the future with optimism. Summer is at our doorstep so have a great one!

hen the R8 was launched in 2007, Audi’s first ever attempt at a mid-engine supercar left the opposition reeling with its towering dynamic abilities and classleading build quality. The Spyder now raises the R8’s game to new levels by exhibiting not only breathtaking looks but also dynamics scarcely diminished from its Coupé sister. At both an overall and a detail level, the R8 Spyder is a very complete and mature design. More significantly, it has a clear identity of its own that is also uniquely Audi. Where the R8 Coupe might have its visual thunder stolen in the company of a Ferrari F430 or Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder, the purer form of the R8 Spyder allows it to hold its own in that exalted company. In fact, it was fascinating to watch heads turn as I cruised along in the traffic between Nice and Cap d’ Antibes, one of the wealthier parts of Provence. There were signs of both awe and approval in the eyes of onlookers, and a quick spurt of throttle away from the lights that had the off-beat thunder of the V10

SPYDER motor bouncing off a nearby wall drew obvious smiles. This is a car that carries it’s own supply of drama. The front of the Spyder is identical to the Coupés, as are the doors, which each receive a new top section to visually integrate them into the lines of the unique rear bodywork. On the Coupé, the vertical side blades are a design element that helps to break up the large solid mass between the doors and rear arches. The visually purer and lighter looking Spyder needs no such aesthetic tricks, and is frankly the better for it. The clever electro-hydraulic folding top takes just 19 seconds to cycle, and can be operated at speeds up to 50km/h. It looks good even when raised, its flying buttresses contributing to, rather than detracting from, the car’s sleek lines. Rear visibility is always an issue with ragtop cars, so I was pleased to find that the relatively large heated glass rear screen is close enough to your head for the rear view mirror to use the full extent of its vista. In league with the big external mirrors, visibility directly aft is not a big issue. In fact, using the three mirrors alone, I was able to reverse out of a car park without reference to the reversing camera whose output shares the sat-nav display. When you are looking forward, your only clue to the car’s Spyder status is the fact that, although the front windscreen shares the same rake angle as the Coupé’s, it is

slightly shorter. The two-layer ragtop does make for a smaller and snugger cabin volume, but the top works perfectly and stays quiet even at high speed. In fact, at 130km/h on a light throttle cruise, it is no louder inside than in the Coupé. The rear glass window is automatically raised 15 centimetres when the top is down, and acts as a wind deflector by breaking up turbulence behind your head. It is most effective in this role and, with the side windows up, buffeting is moderate up to 200km/h.While today’s Italian supercars show good craftsmanship in their bodywork, they are still not as finely constructed as the Audi. And when it comes to the quality of interior fit and finish they do not even come close. The standard R8 Spyder interior is nice enough, but Audi showed us a white car with tan leather trim and Recaro sports seats. As a finishing touch, the interior door handles were faced with carbon-fibre as part of the carbonfibre package, which uses this light and strong material for the front spoiler lip, rear diffuser and mirror covers on the car’s exterior. The heart of the R8 Spyder is the 5,204cc, Lamborghini-derived dry-sump V10 that delivers 525hp at 8,000rpm and 530Nm of torque at 6,500rpm. The power-to-weight ratio of 3.3kg/hp is impressive but does not create any untoward drama thanks to the supreme traction of the 4WD quattro system. This helps both the six-speed manual and RTronic versions of the Spyder blast to 100km/h in 4.1 seconds, 0-200km/h in 12.4 seconds and on to 313km/h (194.5mph). Despite the high crankshaft speeds at which peak torque arrives, palpable thrust is abundant at low crankshaft speeds. But the 5.2 litre motor really lets off all its fireworks when you rev it to its 8,500rpm redline in the gears. The engine picks up revs very quickly and smoothly in the intermediate gears, and you have to watch the rev counter with the manual, or in the manual mode of R-Tronic, if you are not to bounce off the rev limiter. The full-blooded battle cry of the V10, which is already impressive in the CoupĂŠ, reaches your ears with even greater clarity through the soft top. As the scenery and other traffic go into reverse, the offbeat growl of the V10 turns first into a wail and then into a racecar-like scream. At the top end of its marathon, the shriek from the four-cam V10 conjures up images of ripping silk, amplified a thousand fold. However, that is just one aspect of the R8 Spyder, and one that can be experienced in a straight line. The tactile rewards through your 56

fingertips and the seat of your pants only arrive when you find a challenging road with the kind of twists and turns that test the chassis. Thanks to the immense stiffness of the basic Audi aluminium space-frame, removing the roof does not take away a great deal from the R8’s structural rigidity. What little is lost is shored up by extra stiffening in the form of the lightweight magnesium cross member across the rear bulkhead, and some other alloy reinforcing sections in strategic places. Where the front

underbody of the Coupé uses moulded plastic screw-on panels to achieve its aerodynamic flat bottom, the Spyder replaces them with aluminium panels that contribute to the stiffness of the frame. The result is an open car that impresses with its structural rigidity. The numerous speed bumps on our test route did not produce any untoward shakes, shimmies or rattles; and both steering wheel and front windscreen frame stayed reassuringly solid over the worst potholes that the recently

winter-stricken French coastal road surfaces could throw at it. The double wishbone suspension and the optional magnetic ride system work together very well to produce a decent secondary ride around town with no sudden jarring movements even over short, sharp bumps. That rigidity also helps the handling and the ride, as the suspension car can be made suppler. The counterpoint is that, at higher speeds, the much-vaunted sharp reflexes of the R8 Coupé also stay intact. w w w. s o c i e t y l i v i n g m a g a z i n e . c o m

Like its Coupé sister, the Spyder’s differential is set to bias 85 per cent of engine power to the rear wheels in normal operation so that it handles more like a rear-wheel-drive car. This gives better turn-in with less understeer, and a more natural balance through the bends. And so it proves up in the hills, where the Spyder really comes alive. Its bombastic power delivery rockets the car out of turns, the throbbing and howling engine note echoing off the landscape as we eat up the short straights, before braking hard for the next twisty sequence. The power-assisted steering has just the right weighting, and perfectly matches the perceived heft of the car. This is not a light car for its size by any means, but the low centre of gravity, wide tracks and rearward bias of the differential give it impressive agility. While the servo-assistance on the optional ceramic brakes is a bit aggressive around town, the retardation from big speeds is faultless. Kerb weight is 1,720 kilograms, heavy for a two-seat, mid-engined roadster, and 65 kilograms heavier than the Porsche Turbo Cabriolet, which shares the R8’s added weight of four-wheel-drive. That is very surprising considering the car’s predominantly aluminium construction, with lightweight materials like carbon-fibre for the rear side panels and hood cover, plastic composites for the engine cover, and PU bumpers and lower rear side panels. The extra strengthening and powered roof add 100 kilograms to the weight of the Coupé, although the Spyder’s ASF body-in-white is only 6.0 kilogram heavier. The roof assembly and its motors account for 42 kilograms, with the other 48 kilograms taken up by the extra stiffening placed in strategic areas of the shell. According to Dr. Martin Brennberger from Audi’s aerodynamics department, the engineers spent a lot of time in the wind tunnel to ensure that the Spyder was stable and did not show too much deterioration in drag and downforce compared to its fixedhead sister. The drag coefficient of 0.37 with 58

the roof in place and downforce are not far off the numbers generated by the Coupé. The downforce aspect is particularly crucial as many high performance cars actually suffer from aerodynamic lift over their front and rear axles at high speed. However, the Audi R8 Coupé and Spyder were designed for a neutral lift situation over the front axle, and slight downforce at the rear. While Audi introduced the R8 with the fine 420hp V8 motor from the RS4, many would-be customers who got wind of the forthcoming 525hp V10 version held back. Launching the Spyder with the 5.2 litre V10 is certainly the right thing to do, as it establishes the car’s top credentials from day one. The V10 motor shows off the Spyder at its very best, and sets a benchmark not just for Audi but also for the class rivals. In price terms, the R8 V10 Spyder meets the Porsche Turbo Cabriolet head on but, while

ON THE ROAD the Stuttgarter is every bit as capable dynamically, it lacks the visual drama that the Audi brings to the party. Audi plan to add a V8 version in the coming months, but I somehow suspect that the V10 will remain the model to have. Costing 10 per cent more than the Coupé, the Spyder is still a relative bargain compared to its much pricier Italian rivals. Not only is the Audi considerably cheaper than the Ferrari and Lamborghini but it also offers a very high level of standard equipment. The Navigation Plus system with reversing camera and the high-powered Bang & Olufsen audio system are part of the package, leaving only magnetic ride, carbon package, sports seats and the very expensive ceramic brakes as significant options. On a practical note, the Spyder only has one luggage compartment area, and this is in the front. Tall and narrow, this 100-litre space easily swallows a maximum size airline carry-on bag, but that is it. You will need to pack cleverly if you are going on a weekend away in this car. Audi offer tailored luggage but, ultimately, 100 litres is 100 litres. When all is said and done, not only is the Audi R8 Spyder a very complete car but what it offers is a bargain at the price. It may be early in the year right now, but there is no sign of anything on the horizon capable of mounting a credible challenge any time soon.

FUNDS RAISED FOR CANCER RESEARCH

Over 40 people took part in a charity walk from Studio B in Nueva Andalucía to Harmon’s Bar in Elviria along the beach to support cancer research and Los Claveles, a local charity that is raising funds to purchase a radio therapy unit for the Costa del Sol hospital so that cancer patients do not need to travel to Málaga. The walk was organised by Helen Powell after her son was diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare form of

cancer that affects children. At the time of going to press, the walk had raised an impressive €12,500 but more money was still to be collected. As a result of the success of this first walk, it is planned to hold it on an annual basis. POKER SCHOOL Readers always have lots of questions so I’ve selected some interesting examples from my mailbag and attempted to answer them from my perspective.

Advice for rookies What’s the most common mistake a rookie player like myself can make once he starts to get fairly comfortable with his own game? My gut reaction to this question is always the same but in a recent interview the legendary Doyle Brunson gave an answer confirming my own opinion, and you might think it carries a hell of a lot more weight coming from the master himself. Don’t forget this is a guy who

has not only beaten the best in the world: he was also diagnosed with cancer 45 years ago and he beat that too!

What Doyle says: “The best advice I could give is not to advance up in the stakes too quickly. The most common mistake is that they come in and they want to try to play with the best and they jeopardise their bankroll and they usually go broke. RAMMING AND JAMMING

As a new player I hear a lot about “stealing the blinds”. Without much experience under my belt what are the circumstances I’m looking for to attempt this kind of theft successfully? The safest rule of thumb for you as a new player is to only attempt to steal blinds from mid-sized stacks. Avoid big stacks (and funnily enough short stacks) until you’ve got a proper handle on what you’re up to. The logic is simple. Big stacks are likely to come right back over the top at you and maybe even put you all-in, which is exactly what you don’t want. Short stacks are very likely to move all-in themselves if they have any kind of a pair or even Queen, King or Ace high. That’s another headache you don’t need when you’re after a simple steal. Another factor is to be aware of what kind of player you’re stealing from. An extra tight big stack player may be a potential target for a steal and similarly a short stack player who is clinging on frantically just to stay in the tourney.

A lot of relatively experienced players will tell you that games where the table is packed full of maniacs can't be beaten. They will complain that even Pocket Rockets won’t necessarily guarantee you victory in a ramming and jamming Texas Holdem game where a bunch of maniacs insist on always staying in for the flop.

A bluff catcher I’ve heard the term a “bluff catcher” used recently. Under what circumstances do you launch one of those? I’ve not heard it before. It’s used a lot as an expression in Atlantic City and Las Vegas and it’s creeping into online blogs. A bluff catcher is a hand strong enough to beat a bluff but not premium enough to put a value bet behind it. A good example would be a mid-pair of Sevens. The important point is you use a bluff catcher primarily at the river when you have good reason to think your opponent missed his draw.

Flop percentages In the lobby area you can see the number of hands which reach the flop in the form of a percentage. As a new player, what I don’t understand is: why does the percentage of flops seem much higher in games where the stakes and/or the blinds are higher? You’d imagine if the stakes and blinds are more expensive players would think harder about progressing through the flop? Lots of online games don’t get as far as the flop because the majority of hands are weak and are folded to maybe a big bet coming from a late position. In higher stake games you’ll generally find more experienced players who feel they have the wit and the wisdom to tackle playing on through the flop with a weaker hand without getting trapped if it fails to deliver. Also, they have the bankroll which enables them to gamble more often.

The stat which even good players often lose sight of is that you only need to be winning 30 to 35 percent of the time against seven or eight loose players to come out way ahead. The fact you lose 70 per cent of the time (even with strong hands) to maniacs, or anyone else for that matter, is not really the issue. The best players in the world lose a lot more times than they win. It’s their batting average that counts. If they’re winning 30 per cent of the time at full tables, they’re making plenty of cash.
