The integrated lighting control of the ENCELIUM® Energy Management System reduced lighting energy consumption while providing the right amount of light when and where required for the diverse spaces within Toronto General Hospital.

Control Information

COMMERCIAL BUILDING ENERGY CODES mandate precise components are controlled and understood

control of lighting systems. This control is best implemented using intelligent lighting controls, which allow multiple control strategies to be implemented cost-effectively. They also allow detailed control with control zones as small as individual light fixtures and with easy rezoning as space use changes. These robust systems become even more powerful if tied to a central point with software at the front end. Imagine an Internet of Light within a building or across an organization’s properties, in which individually addressable lighting 6

using a software interface. This allows the building owner to fine-tune lighting control strategies to maximize energy cost savings on a continuous basis. From a single workstation, facility operators can modify control behavior, revise schedules and execute other commands. A major feature of centralized intelligent lighting control is the two-way flow of information. A majority of systems offer measuring and monitoring capabilities. Increasingly, control software is expanding to include other measurable building parameters such as Continued on page 8

occupancy and temperature. This information provides a powerful business asset that can be used in a variety of ways to enhance business operations. Let’s start with the basics. The control system can measure energy consumption, which is useful for energy management, while monitoring the system, which is useful for maintenance. Data is recorded and fed to a central storage point such as a server and captured by the software to display current and historical views via a graphical user interface. Reports should be easy to read as well as comprehensive. Some software provides views of the building with color gradients indicating relative energy efficiency at a glance. At a minimum, it should display energy use in kWh in standard time increments— e.g., daily, monthly, etc. Some systems also record instantaneous demand for 8

power (kW). Some software provides access to graphical views of energy savings in kWh and dollars by building, space type and control strategy. Ideally, this information will be actual and not estimated. The data can be used for energy savings verification, identifying resource consumption by business unit or process, tenant billing or value-add, marketing and other purposes. Significantly, we can use it to fine-tune the operation of the lighting and control system so as to satisfy users and optimize energy cost savings. For example, we might ask, “Why do occupants keep turning off the lights in this hallway? Why does this department or process consume so much energy?” As a marketing tool, energy savings and associated carbon reduction could be shared with the public as a demonstration of the organization’s commitment to sus-

tainability. For example, this data could be displayed in near real time in a lobby kiosk, or aggregated for promotion via a marketing campaign. Monitoring improves maintenance efficiency. Using the software, facility operators can view near-real-time lighting status such as dimmed level or light level, operating hours and faults. They can also view demand response condition, which is useful if the building participates in a demand response program. Anomalies in operation requiring operator attention can be set to trigger alarm notifications sent by email, text or other method. Some systems provide daily reports of lighting equipment requiring servicing, such as failed lamps and ballasts. These are proven core capabilities of software-based lighting control systems. As the technology matures, so does the type of information Continued on page 12

FEATURE • Osram Sylvania that can be captured as well as its application. By incorporating occupancy data into the software, for example, we can use that information to better understand operations while providing another input into automatic operation. By incorporating temperature sensing, we can map temperature patterns to optimize HVAC operation. When viewing occupancy data, for example, we might ask, “Why is there a person walking on the fifth floor after normal operating hours? Why should I have a cleaning crew clean a certain building area when it will be unoccupied for the next three weeks?” The answers go beyond lighting control and directly into business operations. As another example, retail stores can evaluate traffic patterns, reduce queues, optimize product placement and track employees—information that can improve efficiency and sales. The applications are endless. Occupancy can also trigger automatic response that goes beyond the lights sim-

ply turning on or off to minimize energy consumption. Occupants entering a building could be recognized so that when they arrive at their office, their preferred lighting scene and temperature would be up and running by the time they arrived. Sensors and lighting could work together to guide vehicles to empty parking stalls. If an unauthorized occupant is detected inside the building, an alarm could be generated for the building’s security team, and all lighting could be programmed to come to full brightness and even change color. Some of these capabilities are available now, while others are evolving. LED lighting is often called the Trojan Horse for the Internet of Things. As LED light fixtures are increasingly installed in both new and existing buildings, they can be integrated with sensors that measure anything that can be measured. The result is the generation of Big Data that drives business ideas and innovation. Just as the LED fixture may be the Trojan Horse, providing the infrastructure for the Inter-

net of Things, lighting control software may serve as a platform for pulling in that data and making it sensible for meaningful analysis. For the building owner, the first decision is simple—choosing an intelligent lighting control system that not only complies with energy codes, but also allows precise ongoing management and the generation of useful energy and maintenance information. After that, questions to ask are what can be measured, what could we learn from it that would benefit our business, and who will put it all together? For building management, the age of information has just begun. Lighting is already ready to deliver, and is currently evolving as a platform for vast new information opportunities. ❏ Chuck Piccirillo is ENCELIUM group product marketing manager at OSRAM SYLVANIA, a manufacturer of advanced lighting control systems (www.osram-americas.com/encelium).

PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT • Gardner Bender head Engineer Matt was out in the field discussing contractor job frustrations and he felt there has to be a better way to reduce job time while working with locknuts. That began the design for a perfect locknut operation tool.

Continued from page 14

tor at Gardner Bender to design a tool to resolve the frustration caused from attaching conduit to junction boxes. The research started with testing out current tools, including a couple name brands. The observed issues included a large frame making it difficult to navigate the Tool Creation tight spaces, and a double handle creating Matt partnered with a Category Direc- wrist tension after repeated use.

Once the competitive analysis was complete, Matt designed a single handle wrench with a smaller frame. The original concept focused around a single tool for both ½” and ¾” locknuts but after field trials it was identified that two independent tools would be required. These independent tools have unique ends that are offset by 30 degrees to capture the locknut in all situations.

Perfecting the Design To make it durable and more versatile the tool was created with 100% steel to make sure that even though it was a small design, it would be strong enough to complete the job. The ½” size was also engineered with notches in the handle to navigate around the junction box tabs. After presenting the initial pilot tool to local contractors, it was exactly what they needed to complete the job. They asked for a larger size and the team added a 1” Locknut Wrench to the mix.

Made in the USA When it came to manufacturing the Locknut Wrench with the patent pending design, Matt partnered with a resource in Racine, Wisconsin - only 30 miles away from the home office. Tony focuses on American made product and wanted to keep production as local as possible.

Customer Trials Once the finalized design was complete, the Gardner Bender team conducted customer trials. Contractors and hardware shop owners alike enjoyed the sleek design, the easy to read laser etched directions for loosen and tighten, and the different size options. In time trials, tightening a locknut using the new Gardner Bender Locknut Wrench happened in seconds, vs the competition taking twice as long or in some cases where it didn’t work to tighten, due to reduced space.

Ready to Order After perfecting the design and receiving positive feedback in customer trials, the Locknut Wrench is now available for order. Check out your local distributor, or go on www.gardnerbender.com and click on ‘TOP TOOL TESTER’ to request a free sample to experience the new Gardner Bender Locknut Wrench yourself! ❏ FOR FREE INFO, CIRCLE 42 ON READER SERVICE CARD

Center for Advanced Power Systems Unveils World’s Most Powerful Electrical Testing System Florida State University’s Center for Advanced Power Systems has unveiled a new 24,000-volt direct current power test system, the most powerful of its kind available at a university research center throughout the world. The new system will give CAPS the unparalleled ability to test electrical equipment in real-world conditions, and companies looking to build next-generation power equipment will be able to test those in the Tallahassee-based facility. “It’s a very long and expensive process for companies to do this at the electrical grid,” said Ferenc Bogdan, senior engineer and associate in research at CAPS. “We can now do all of that cheaper and faster here.” FSU founded CAPS 14 years ago as an innovative, collaborative research center where scientists could develop smart energy systems for the nation’s power and defense needs. It pioneered the power hardware in the loop (PHIL) test facility model that has now been replicated at other institutions, including Clemson University and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. PHIL simulation is a scientific experi-

ment where a simulated electrical environment virtually exchanges power with real hardware, giving scientists a more indepth look at how equipment would fare in real-world conditions such as a lightning strike or a power surge. The new test facility is the latest piece of the center’s PHIL testing program. It has a 24,000-volt direct current with a capacity of 5 megawatts, making it the most powerful PHIL system of its kind at a university research center worldwide. To create the new system, the center put together four individual 6 kilovolt, 1.25 megawatt converters that can be arranged in any combination, in series or parallel connection, to form an extremely flexible test bed for medium voltage direct current (MVDC) system investigations. The MVDC system was built based on CAPS’ specifications by ABB Inc., as a technology demonstrator geared towards research activities. “This is the first time anyone has strung together four individual converters of this magnitude and operated them in a safe and controlled manner,” said Michael “Mischa” Steurer, senior research faculty

and leader of the Power Systems Research Group at CAPS. News of the facility has already yielded results for CAPS. Government research institutions, including the Office of Naval Research (ONR), have already committed to using the new facility at CAPS for testing and system investigation projects. CAPS is a long-term contractor with the Navy, which is working to develop an all-electric ship. CAPS researchers are also collaborating with Virginia Tech on a project for ONR to evaluate the performance of an electrical impedance measurement unit (IMU) developed by Virginia Tech and to be shipped to CAPS for testing. The purpose of an IMU is to probe a power system for its impedance characteristics to establish criteria for stable operation of the system. In plain language, impedance is the opposition a circuit presents to a current when voltage is applied at various strengths and frequencies. The Navy has also committed funding to study design and performance of fault current limited MVDC systems and other operational aspects of MVDC systems. ❏

Compact Fluorescent Lamp Shipments Continue to Lag NEMA’s index for compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) shipments registered a year-over-year decline of 14.5 percent in the third quarter of 2014 despite a modest quarterly increase of 1.5 percent. For the first three quarters of 2014, the CFL index decreased 13.1 percent compared to the same period last year. The shipments index for incandescent A-line lamps posted a decline of 62.9 percent (q/q). In contrast, shipments of LED A-line and halogen A-line lamps continued to grow, showing quarterly gains of 53.8 and 37.7 percent, respectively. The proliferation of halogen A-line lamp shipments, and subsequent decline in shipments of incandescent A-line lamps, has resulted in an increase in market share for halogen A-line lamps. Halogen A-line lamps

20

captured a share of 39.9 percent during the quarter, second only to CFLs, which continued to hold a narrow lead with a 41.1 percent share. The share of LED lamp shipments was 5.1 percent, an increase of 2 percentage points. Incandescent A-line lamps fell nearly 20 points to a share of 13.6 percent. NEMA is the association of electrical equipment and medical imaging manufacturers, founded in 1926 and headquartered in Rosslyn, Virginia. Its nearly 400 member companies manufacture a diverse set of products including power transmission and distribution equipment, lighting systems, factory automation and control systems, and medical diagnostic imaging systems. Total U.S. shipments for electroindustry products exceed $100 billion annually. ❏
