Lighting 4.0 More than a Technology Shift By Jes Munk Hansen
T
he lighting industry is changing, and we must all change with it— contractors and manufacturers alike. At the heart of this change is a major technological shift to solid-state lighting. This light source, coupled with the increasing digitization of lighting, is causing disruption across the industry. It’s not just an important technological shift though. It’s also changing processes and the speed of doing business. OSRAM and OSRAM SYLVANIA, two companies you have known for a long time, are also going through a transformation with the lamps business unit becoming LEDVANCE. On July 1, LEDVANCE will be legally separated and will deliver SYLVANIA-branded products to our North America customers and OSRAM-branded products to the rest of the world.
6
As CEO of the new LEDVANCE, I’d like to share my perspective on change and provide some insights about how contractors can remain competitive in the lighting market during our industry’s evolution.
How the Industry is Changing Technological change is not new to the lighting industry. We often describe the rapid transition to solid-state lighting as Lighting 2.0, but today it’s really about 4.0. First, Thomas Edison invented the modern incandescent light bulb in 1879, and the company that eventually became SYLVANIA was founded in 1901 (Lighting 1.0). These two events helped propel electric lighting. In 1939, SYLVANIA unveiled the first linear fluorescent lamp, which is now one of the most

More and more consumers and business owners have heard about the benefits of LED lighting, like long life and energy savings, but have been hesitant for electrical contractors to install them in their homes and establishments because of the initial upfront cost, or poor quality from low cost options. Those concerns are gone now, thanks to the first-to-market, cost-effective SYLVANIA Contractor Series LED Portfolio.

(Lighting 3.0). The lighting industry navigated these market shifts without major changes in business practices. Now we’re in the middle of the “digitalization of light” driven by LED and connectivity, giving us Lighting 4.0, which is changing everything. For the end customer, it’s a very exciting time. Solid-state lighting provides a highly-efficient, long-life, controllable light source. Lighting products can be delivered with custom lumens, wattage and color output. The relative ease with which color can be tuned has created a new dimension of lighting control, and in addition to intensity, is creating new applications. As digital devices, LEDs are inherently compatible with intelligent lighting controls. Lighting is transitioning from fixed, unintelligent products to highly flexible and responsive systems. Meanwhile, LED costs have been declining steadily in recent years. With these advantages, its rapid ascent should come as no surprise. For the lighting industry, LEDs present opportunities to open new markets, better serve existing markets, and engage our customers about new capabilities. The changes it brings can also be painful. Distributors face lower lamp replacement sales. Contractors face risks centered on shorter product cycles, doing business with new suppliers, compatibility issues, and committing to products in a market showing a wide variation in quality. The traditional lamp manufacturer’s strength was the high-volume manufacture and sale of a standardized product that was in constant demand. A linear T8 installs using standardized electrical connections and, say, seven years later, can be replaced with the same lamp. This was how the lighting industry did business for decades, selling high volumes of lamps with very long product cycles. Enter LED lighting, and all that changed. Hundreds of new manufacturers entered the market, putting pressure on the big lamp companies. Seemingly overnight, lighting became a fast-moving technology field, no longer simply about making a lamp connected to other electrical components. Light sources and luminaires merged to become an appliance that has more in common with mobile phones than the traditional lighting it’s replacing. Product cycles rapidly compressed to 8

1-2 years, disrupting everything from inventory management to maintenance. Lighting companies, once in the “canned goods” business, found themselves in the “fresh produce” business, forced to manage their supply chain more carefully. Ultimately, lighting, once simple, suddenly became much more complex. No previous technological shifts in lighting have had such an impact.
How Contractors Can Navigate Change As a major player in the lighting industry, contractors are also facing risks from the disruption. What can they do to navigate change and minimize their risks? Stay informed. The number of new lighting products being added and removed from the marketplace each year is staggering. Contractors should stay on top of these products while researching the companies that make them. New capabilities of LED lighting, from tunable-white control to wireless connectivity, must be understood. Lighting controls are advancing right along with LED, imposing the same challenges to stay informed. Contractors must invest the time to stay current by taking advantage of online and in-person product training. In part to demonstrate our commitment to innovation, we recently moved into a new 124,000-square-foot facility in Wilmington, Massachusetts. The new facility is

designed to foster collaboration, and strategically puts the company within the technology corridor with greater proximity to Boston, its airport and its talent pool. Product development and testing have been integrated into the traditional office spaces to foster innovation and increase our speed. From my perspective, these are all positive, but I’m particularly excited that we placed LIGHTPOINT, our training center, directly in the middle of the facility. This signifies its importance. Contractors should take advantage of training provided by manufacturers like ourselves. We train thousands of customers each year, in person and via online modules, globally. Our company benefits because a well-educated customer will be more successful and therefore buy more of our products. Choose your partners carefully. Hundreds of new manufacturers have entered the market, some good, some not so good, with the best bringing innovation. Contractors are now being called on by companies that didn’t exist a few years ago but offer warranties that could last many years. They are buying products that may not be available within two years, that may be promoted with unsupported claims, and that show a wide variation in quality. To an extent, the LED product market is still the Wild West, and contractors should choose Continued on page 12

for lighting. The SYLVANIA Contractor Series is a first-to-market robust LED portfolio of lamps and downlight kits rated up to 11,000 hours at cost-effective price points for practically any socket. These products reduce energy and maintenance costs, have a traditional shape and deliver the superior glow that end-users know and enjoy, making them an ideal replacement for compact fluorescents. We launched this portfolio specifically for contractors requiring a cost-effective solution for their customers but who might be hesitant due to bad experiences with low-performing value products.

their partners carefully to mitigate their risks. Quality is still a huge issue. Contractors should work with suppliers they trust and that offer robust support. A good supplier should manage its supply chain well so that it’s able to introduce cutting-edge products each year. It should have a solid reputation and commitment to its products. It should take responsibility for its mistakes, making its warranty and sales claims trustworthy. It should back up its performance claims with testing. And the supplier should offer the same training, customer service and support that contractors enjoyed receiving from the traditional lighting industry for decades. The contractor should also request product samples to personally test. Of particular interest is compatibility with other system components, notably lighting controls. The contractor should recognize that while costs are steadily declining, the industry is still in a “get what you pay for” time in LED technology’s development. Lighting isn’t only a commodity light bulb anymore, but a relatively sophisticated appliance. The good news is things will steadily improve as the market becomes more educated and products become more standardized. I see the industry beginning to consolidate again. In the end, companies that can move the most volume through the supply chain will be most successful. Look for trends. As a manufacturer, 12
we stay tuned to customer needs but also current and emerging trends so that we have the right product at the right time. Contractors would benefit by doing the same. In my view, there are certain trends of particular interest to contractors. One is the market is stratifying similar to traditional lighting, with one tier of products focusing on delivering good quality while innovating on cost, and the other tier focusing on innovating with value-added features. Today, just as there are valueadded LED products such as smart lamps, well-performing, lower-cost products are also being developed that reduce cost through features such as 10,000-hour life instead of 25,000-hour life. This makes sense for two reasons. First, good performance combined with lower cost increases penetration of LED lighting. Second, many customers do not actually need 30 years of product life, especially when one considers a better product will become available just a year after installation. Imagine buying one of the first smartphones and then being stuck with it for the rest of your life while every year, generations of new smartphones enter the market. Why buy a 30-year-life product when a 10-year product is available at good quality and lower cost, and provides an opportunity to upgrade? In recognition of these trends, we just launched a portfolio that offers a highquality but also very economical option

The LED revolution is changing not only how we light buildings, but the lighting industry itself. Contractors should navigate this change by staying on top of and vetting new products, choosing proven partners who offer solid products and robust support, and keeping their ear to the ground. For traditional lighting manufacturers, change has been particularly challenging but, I have to say, positive. As an organization, we are not the same company we were just three years ago; we’re stronger. By being flexible and adapting to change, LEDVANCE, which will employ over 10,000 people worldwide, will continue to be a leader. Our product portfolio will cover traditional lighting, modern LED lamps and standardized over-the-counter (OTC) luminaires, as well as connected and intelligent lighting solutions for smart homes and buildings. While we are changing, much will remain the same to benefit our contractor partners. Our commitment to quality and customer service will continue to be our daily operations. The brand that North American contractors have counted on for years, SYLVANIA, will continue and be even stronger than ever before. At LEDVANCE, we’ll continue to listen to contractor needs and adapt to change while staying the course and providing the products and support they expect from our respected brand. If you are at LIGHTFAIR this year, come visit us at booth 5407 to see for yourself the new SYLVANIA you’ve known for years. ❏ Jes Munk Hansen is CEO of LEDVANCE. www.sylvania.com

ductivity, safety and potential profits. Initially contractors might consider buying ladders or scaffolding because it seems like a quick fix or an inexpensive option. Ladders and scaffolding can be cost- effective options for small-scale maintenance, such as changing a light bulb or touching up painting projects, but their size and safety issues can put contractors at risk for workers’ compensation claims and missed deadlines. For extensive projects, such as installing wiring or hanging drywall, low-level access lifts are the most efficient and safest alternative.
Move More with Ease With elevated projects, operators usually come to a point where they can’t reach any farther off a platform to work efficiently; they need to move their equip-
ment to continue or have a platform extension to work from. Adjusting efficiently to changing work environments determines whether or not laborers complete a job ahead of schedule or on time; and the right piece of equipment is key to adapting. Aerial lifts easily adapt to changing work environments. These lifts are available in push-around, electrically driven and hydraulically driven models — each with specific features and benefits that virtually eliminate extra labor associated with ladders and scaffolding. Since ladders require constant up-anddown movement and scaffolding need repositioning, it’s worth considering using lifts that support a wide range of materials and tools. Along with more support, pushed or Continued on page 16

asy. Efficient. Ergonomic. Contractors would love to say these three words to describe the equipment they use on a busy jobsite. Unfortunately descriptions for equipment, including ladders and scaffolding, usually involve adjectives such as bulky, time-consuming and unproductive for the task at hand. Contractors work at heights regularly to complete a range of construction projects, from snaking electrical cables to applying the last coat of paint. How they reach those working heights — and what they can bring with them — can make all the difference for maximizing overall pro-

Some lifts also include slide-out extensions, providing laborers up-and-over access for a wide range of obstacles, such as stair railings, where ladders and scaffolding can’t access without putting laborers in tough — and sometimes, dangerous — situations. Aerial lifts that have quick scissor lifting capabilities offer a big advantage over ladders and scaffolding by eliminating the extra time and work needed to climb up and down them. Some push-around lifts reach an 11-foot working height in less than 9 seconds. Taller, electrically driven lifts reach 20-foot working heights in as little as 15 seconds. Quick up-anddown movement when loading building materials and reaching the elevated worksite shaves time off the production schedule, widening profit margins. Some manufacturers offer lifts with a compact footprint that are easy to move through a jobsite. These lifts easily work in tight areas on jobsites that are typically re-

served only for ladders or scaffolding. For the best maneuverability, look for a compact footprint and a zero-turn radius, which means easy navigation around corners, through hallways, and under overhead fixtures and support beams. These lifts are narrow enough to fit through doorframes and even inside elevators.
Heavyweight Decisions Ladders and scaffolding require multiple trips and more effort when moving and gathering materials and tools — where lifts can carry most materials needed for the job in one trip. Some low-level lifts support as much as 750 pounds, making them ideal for lifting heavy materials, such as drywall and wire spools, and one or two laborers. A few lift models — because of equal weight distribution throughout the wheel load — can move safely across sensitive surfaces, including tile and stone floors, without damage. For example, a lift with a 670-pound capacity Continued on page 18

heights and full swing gates, go a long way to minimize operator fatigue, a major contributor to falls. Full-swing gates open inward, so laborers don’t have to duck under a bar or chain and possibly strain their body. Fewer and lower steps — as low as 20 inches — decrease the chance of tripping and falling versus climbing metal scaffolding or an unstable ladder. Platform stability is also key to enhancing worker safety for work-at-height projects. Stability contributes to workers’ confidence, helping them feel safer to work faster because they feel less likely to fall. Robust scissor stacks and oversized pins provide that stability. Occasionally lift manufacturers incorporate features, such as fully enclosed railings and kickboards around the platform, to protect laborers above and below. This keeps materials and tools safely inside the platform, preventing any from falling and potentially hitting another worker.
Profit with Low-Level Access Lifts Low-level lifts might not only change contractors’ vocabularies in how they describe their equipment, but might mean the difference in terms of productivity and profits down the line. Swapping ladders and scaffolding for lifts means safer working environments and increased efficiency, which builds trusted reputations that can help win future bids for contractors. And do it all with product that is exceptionally well designed, and which achieves market level lighting performance. These are the advantages that Ember LED & Valen Light are putting on the table with their newest generation of solar lighting. Until recently, either the lighting power wasn’t there, or the setups were industrial or techy looking. A solar lighting setup meant working with bulky battery boxes

These Franken-fixture style setups meant unsightly looking product, with hardware and bracketing visible, that were very difficult to maintain. The market has been ready for a good looking/quality solution for a long time. Ember LED & Valen Light are changing the way exterior lighting is done and Valen Light is unique among product manufacturers. Their controls use advanced MPPT tracking technology, and their extreme batteries have a -40F to 169F temperature rating. The baseline is very high to meet the purpose. The electrical and electronics engineering of the eSHINE Solar Lighting Series is supported by years of R&D and more importantly, field experience from dry deserts to arctic type terrain. The systems work, and work reliably, and the customers are happy. In addition to electrical and electronics innovation, serious structural R&D is apparent with the integrative setup of the Valen Solar Pole. The batteries are stacked in the base, along with the controls, and only the lumninaire and solar panel are at the top of the post. The 8.5-inch (MSRP: $20.95) and 6-inch (MSRP: $18.95) models are now shipping. “The new Platinum Tools Lineman’s Pliers are a fresh take on a classic design,” said Lee Sachs, Platinum Tools, Inc. president and general manager. “Designed for gripping, twisting, bending and cutting wire and cable, the two-tone (TPR) molded comfort grip handle helps make any job a breeze.” Both sizes feature a 6140CrV drop forged carbon alloy steel body with a hardness level of 45 ±3 and a blade hardness of 58-61 to ensure a clean cut for years to come. With a polished finish, the tool has both great functionality and looks. “The 6-inch version is the miniature version of its 8.5-inch big brother, but the compact smaller design allows it to get into places the larger Lineman’s Pliers won’t fit,” added Sachs. “Put both of these in your tool belt or box and you have the perfect one-two punch for any job.” For more information, visit www.platinumtools.com
