How Well Do You Know Your

Transfer Switches?

By Charlie Hume, product line sales engineer, Eaton

T

ransfer switches play an essential role in keeping critical electrical loads functional during power outages. This handy pop quiz will serve as a refresher for electrical pros to brush up on their knowledge of this vital power distribution equipment. So how well do you know your transfer switches? Let’s find out.

Question: As defined by Chapter 7 of the National Electrical Code® (NFPA 70), how many different types of system installations use transfer switches?

A) 1

B) 3

Answer: 4

Electrical Products & Solutions • May 2016

C) 4

D) 7

The four articles NFPA 70 (Chapter 7) divides transfer switch applications into are emergency systems, legally required systems, critical operations power systems (COPS) and operational standby systems. Emergency systems supply, automatically distribute and control power used by systems essential to life safety during fires and other disasters. These include fire detectors, alarms, emergency lights, elevators and others. Legally required systems automatically supply power to a selected set of regulated loads not classified as emergency systems when normal power is unavailable. COPS supply, distribute and control electricity in designated critical areas when a normal power source fails. Optional standby systems supply power to loads with no direct bearing on health or life safety, and are not Continued on page 8 required to function

before making a connection to another A) True B) False

Answer: D

Answer: False. Transfer switches can transition loads between normal and emergency power sources in two basic ways – open or closed. An open transition means the transfer switch breaks its connection to one source before making its connection to the other (this process is separated into two subcategories: open delayed and open inphase). A closed transition means the switch will make a connection to the new power source before breaking its connection to the old one (this happens automatically to ensure the sources are synchronized). The specific functions performed by a given load and the importance of those functions to safety or security play an important role in determining which kind of transition is required.

Both molded case and power case breaker mechanisms support integral overcurrent protection. Though not as common as contactor switch mechanisms, molded case breaker mechanisms are self-protecting at high fault currents due to integral magnetic sensing. Power case mechanisms can be configured with a variety of trip unit types that provide integral, programmable overcurrent protection, ground fault sensing, power quality metering and diagnostics. Additionally, power case mechanisms feature the added advantage in that they can be configured for “selective coordination,” allowing the protective device located immediately upstream of an electrical fault to open first, leaving the rest of the power distribution system operational. For many applications, including emergency, COPS and legally required systems, use of selective coordination is mandatory.

Question: Which switching mechanism technology supports integral overcurrent protection?

Question: True or False – Transfer switches can feature two different operation modes: manual and automatic

A) True B) False

Electrical Products & Solutions • May 2016

Answer: True. Transfer switches can, in fact, feature both manual and automatic operation modes. In manual mode, both initiation and operation are performed manually, typically by pushing a button or moving a handle. In automatic mode, the transfer switch controller completely manages both initiation and operation. Initiation is triggered when the automatic controller senses an unavailability or loss of source power and operation is typically performed by an electric solenoid or monitor. However, these are not the only operation modes transfer switches support. In addition to manual and automatic modes, transfer switches can also feature non-automatic mode (different from manual) and bypass isolation mode. In non-automatic mode, the operator manually initiates a transfer by pressing a button or rotating a switch that causes an internal electromechanical device to electrically operate the switching mechanism. Bypass isolation transfer switches include dual switching mechanisms that provide redundancy for critical applications. The primary switching mechanism handles day-to-day distribution of electrical power to the load, while the secondary switching mechanism serves as a backup. During repair or maintenance procedures, a technician can bypass power around the primary mechanism through the secondary mechanism to ensure critical loads remain powered without interruption. ❏

Change How You Find and Troubleshoot Equipment Problems

E

lectricians and technicians are often faced with the challenge to quickly locate and troubleshoot faulty equipment with the tools at hand. For years that has meant a digital multimeter and maybe a thermal imager, also known as an infrared camera. But for many facilities thermal imagers are a shared tool and not always available when needed. The latest technology available combines a digital multimeter with a thermal imager and adds wireless capabilities so measurements can be taken from a safe distance, saved and even stored in secure data centers for later analysis. That’s a powerful combination that helps increase productivity and confidence.

12

Let’s consider the scenario of a large pump that keeps going down before it achieves full power. Such problems are often suspected to be electrical, although the root cause is unknown. A common troubleshooting procedure would start like this:

Spot problems with thermal imager While the pump is still running you do a quick thermal survey using a thermal imager looking for hotspots at the panel, disconnect and the pump motor itself. If nothing looks unusual, increase the speed of the pump until it fails while surveying for hot spots at the Continued on page 14

The New Flat Rate

Why Johnny Carson Never Left NBC By Rodney Koop, CEO/Founder, The New Flat Rate

A

round 1979, Johnny Carson, the undisputed king of late night television was feeling somewhat strangled by his current employer, NBC. It wasn’t that the network was treating him carelessly or not paying him what he was worth. The reason, an iron clad contract that controlled his every move and that would be active for a couple more years. Contracts can be a positive part of a job or business relationship. They have the ability to clearly define expectations and be a reference when things are unclear. But, contracts can also come with severe restrictions. In the situation of Johnny Carson versus NBC, restrictive was the case. When Johnny finally decided he’d had enough with his over the top contract with NBC, he sent his lawyer to tell them he would be leaving in one year…1980. NBC wasn’t going to make it easy and counteracted with a threat of a 100-million-dollar lawsuit. NBC wasn’t going down without a fight and neither was Mr. Carson, so the gloves came off. To the other networks, Johnny Carson was about to become a free agent; the NBC executives went bananas. The other networks began their pursuit. Thinking that The Tonight Show, starring Johnny

18

Carson was up for grabs, each of them began the process of illegally courting him. I say illegally, because other networks were not allowed to make an offer to another network’s employee while under contract. The result, NBC hired an arbitration firm to determine if Johnny could vacate his contract or not. The arbitration firm determined that NBC could extend contracts with Johnny, but that the “exclusivity” clauses were not legally extended. This meant that Johnny

could leave at any time. When it was all said and done, NBC decided to forgo the 100-million-dollar threat and enjoy Johnny’s success. Once Johnny knew the contracts were not binding, he decided to

stay with NBC. Although, other networks were still offering him more than double the pay and double the time off to come work for them, he stayed. During this conflicting time, while considering the attractiveness of offers from networks like ABC and CBS, Johnny Carson turned to one of the most influential men in Hollywood at that time. An insightful agent by the name of Lew Wasserman. Wasserman’s opinion was very simple: “It is not prudent to ask people to change their nightly viewing habits. Once they are used to tuning into a given channel, they find it hard to make the move, no matter how good an alternative is being provided elsewhere.” Johnny let the matter drop and stayed with NBC another 12 years. Have you ever felt like there was an invisible wall between you and a prospective customer when you offer them a repair or a service? Could it be that they are in a habitual comfort zone and your request causes them discomfort? What if the real problem is actually their discomfort and not the price or your offer? We can’t expect our customers to be their own therapists can we? What we need is for them to feel like Johnny Carson did when he was released from the confinements of his contract with NBC. What if we could facilitate the “releasing” of a Continued on page 20

contractual like feeling for our customers? Has a customer ever said to you, “Well, I guess I don’t have any choice in the matter”. That means they feel restricted and we need to get the monkey off their shoulder! Now you can with The New Flat Rate! When The New Flat Rate was in its infancy, our team realized that some customers practically jumped into our arms with a willingness to buy, while others were reluctant. In the beginning, we thought the secret was to bundle or package products and services together with a discount. Example: Offer to add security lighting with the purchase of a backup generator. After all, isn’t that what McDonalds does? Would you like fries with that? When I looked closer at how menu’s work, I realized that it’s not the addition of fries that makes them buy. The buying switch is flipped by simply giving the perception that they are getting more for their money if they take the combo offer. After all, I can just buy a cheeseburger and coke

cola, enjoy the meal, and then if I’m still hungry, buy an order of fries or a hot apple pie. It seems like common sense and undoubtedly in the long run would save money. But why do I buy the combo? Because I know that those fries will cost more as a single purchase than if I get them in a combo. That’s why menus work! For a menu to work right it must create a sense of perceived value. The purchaser must feel that if they buy a higher priced option, they will get much more value for their money. Also, the purchaser must accept that the bottom option is priced reasonably. After 5 years of testing and enhancing The New Flat Rate’s suite of over 500 menus’ for Electrical, Plumbing, and HVAC, the proof is here. The New Flat Rate sees 9 out of 10 customers choosing one of the five options that are on every page in just about 10 seconds. The New Flat Rate sees virtually no buyer’s remorse! The customer is happy with their purchase. The big surprise? Using a properly priced menu system will: add over $1,000 of ad-

business in 1999. The goal of the business was to provide cost effective safety consulting, employee training such as: confined space entry, fall protection, electrical safety and provide sales of electrical shock and flash protective equipment and fall protection equipment to businesses in the Washington DC area. Reliance Industries provided fall protection products and much of the sales and training was on behalf of the supplier. In 2000, the owner decided to retire from his business, and Vince decided to discontinue the fall protection line of his business and concentrate more in the electrical training and products. Vince had been a distributor for Certified Insulated Products (CIP), a manufacturer of electrical insulated tools and electrical arc flash clothing manufactured by Otex in Rochester, New York. As a distributor, Vince provided sales through his internet website and much through relationships with electrical contractors. His training was a classroom 22

environment and was provided directly to customers but he also taught as a subcontractor for other safety consulting companies and the Chesapeake Safety Council in Baltimore, Maryland. In 2005, Vince partnered with Vivid Learning Systems in Cascades, Washington to provide on-line training in safe work practices. Training in electrical safe work practices is still provided locally in the

Washington DC area and as a partner with an electrical engineering firm and online. The training is based on the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) standards and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 70E standard. Miller Safety Consultants is now a distributor for Cementex USA, Burlington, New Jersey, for insulated tools and equipment and clothing from OTEX Protective, Rochester, New York. The majority of his sales of products are from the web-based store. Cementex is nationally known for their quality equipment. Otex Protective is becoming more known for their quality clothing. For years, they have manufactured their products under other provider labels. Vince chose to not create his clothing line, but to sell the manufacturer product. Vince has worked with many electrical company employees to fine-tune the clothing to be more comfortable for the user. Working closely with the manufacturer, they have made slight changes in how the cloth pattern was modified to meet final production. An example is the lightweight 40 Calary vented hood offered by Otex. The material is of the latest technology. The vented assembly is constructed for balance on the back of the hardhat and the airflow is 35 CFM to prevent fogging of the face shield and provide cooling to the worker. It took over a year to develop the product with the user prior to having the hood “flash tested”. This product is now standard issue with many electrical contractors. Being a small business and having quality providers has resulted in satisfied customers for Miller Safety Consultants. Being a direct supplier for OTEX Protective, another small business means customized customer needs can be met. ❏

new PRODUCTS Analyzes Electrical and Mechanical Performance on Operational Motors without Mechanical Sensors to Extend System Lifespan Measuring mechanical loads typically requires load sensors that can be costly or physically inaccessible. The new Fluke® 438-II Power Quality and Motor Analyzer uses innovative algorithms to analyze not only three-phase power quality but also torque, efficiency, and speed to determine system performance and detect overloaded conditions, eliminating the need for motor load sensors. The Fluke 438-II simplifies the process of motor performance diagnosis by providing analysis data for both the electrical and mechanical characteristics of the motor while it is in operation. Using proprietary algorithms, the 438-II measures the three-phase current and voltage waveforms and compares them against rated specifications to calculate motor mechanical performance. The analysis is presented in simple readouts, making it easy to gauge the operating performance and determine if adjustments are needed before failures cause an operational shut down. The analyzer also provides measurements to determine a motor’s efficiency (i.e. the conversion of electrical energy to mechanical torque) and mechanical power under operating load conditions. These measures allow maintenance engineers to determine the motors in-service operating power compared to its rated power to determine if the motor is operating in overloaded condition or, inversely, if it is oversized for the application energy may be wasted and operating cost increased. The 438-II is part of the Fluke 430 Series of three-phase power quality analyzers that provide frontline troubleshooting and long-term trending to keep equipment running smoothly. RIDGID® Introduces the Lightest, Easiest to Use 12-Ton Manual Hydraulic Crimp Tool RIDGID® continues to innovate in the electrical space with the RE 12-M manual hydraulic crimp tool. The RE 12-M is the lightest and easiest to use 12-ton manual hydraulic crimping tool on the market. The RE 12-M is used for wire termination and grounding applications to crimp compression lugs and connectors onto copper, aluminum and ACSR wire and grounding rods. The C-shaped head with 1.65inch jaw opening is large enough for compression applications up to 1,000 MCM and has a 330-degree head rotation for better access in tight spaces. The RIDGID RapidAdvance System™ on the RE 12-M engages with the lug quicker to speed up the crimping process. Only two pumps are required to engage even the smallest lug size, while having the lowest handle force in its class. RIDGID is the only manufacturer to offer a removable Head Stand attachment. The Head Stand stabilizes the tool, allowing one person to easily position the cable and lug between the dies while simultaneously pumping the handle of the crimp tool quickly and efficiently on the ground. “The RE 12-M is noticeably lighter and makes jobs easier for the professional with both the Head Stand and the RapidAdvance System™. It provides a reliable crimp with less fatigue,” said Rob Trefz, RIDGID Global Marketing Director. The tool comes with a heavy-duty carrying case that holds the tool, Head Stand, and space to hold up to 13 crimp dies. Also included are decals for labeling the die slots inside the case, providing optimal organization and quick access to save time. For more information, visit RIDGID.com
