Shaping the Future of Cable Management
I
n the early 90’s, the concept of wire mesh or basket cabletray was first introduced. While many laughed at the concept and called it ‘grocery cart’, the fact is that more and more often this style of tray is fast becoming the standard for most new installations today. The speed of installation, the cable protection properties and the fact that it is field configurable allows the contractor a fast installation timeframe, and an overall best value (lowest cost and most cable protection and support). Back in that initial timeline, the cable was pedestrian compared to today’s ca-

bling speeds and bandwidth. Emerging technologies for Category 8 and 40 Gigabit Ethernet in the data center require a tray system that offers a comparable technology to keep up with high performance cabling today. There are numerous factors to consider when choosing a supplier for a cable pathway project. Is the project a LEED installation? Does it require U.S. manufactured parts and supports? What cables will be going into the tray and what specific bonding/grounding instructions has the end user or consultant specified? Many times huge cabling budgets over-

shadow the need for a properly thought out and engineered cable pathway to support the cabling media. Below are some of the pertinent issues that should be reviewed before choosing a supplier for mesh/basket tray.
CABLETRAY PERFORMANCE Normally ‘performance’ and cabletray don’t coexist within the same sentence. The question may be asked, how tray can have any effect on the cables within it. With today’s high speed/bandwidth cables, the issue of radius bends and pressure points is very relevant to insure the cables suffer no effects from any bends or pressure points. When you have only a few dozen cables within a tray, there is really no issue; however, in a larger installation or datacenter, you may have several thousand cables within a single tray. The cables lying at the botContinued on page 8

tom of the tray support the weight of several hundred cables above them. A round cable sitting on a round wire support at the bottom of the tray offers very little surface area to support the cable, and can create a pressure point that is to be avoided at all costs. What WBT has patented is taking that traditionally round wire, and reengineering a flat wire solu-
tion on the crosswires. Independent test reports confirm a minimum increase of 400% more support for the cabling media, and a decrease in pressure or strain on the cables of up to 65%. For those installations where an insert is specified to offer a flat bottom on the cable pathway, the options are twofold. Traditionally steel inserts are installed that
cover only the bottom within the tray. The edges are hemmed over to avoid any sharp edges, and lengths of 5’/10’ are palletized and shipped. The drawbacks to steel inserts are the high cost in material, shipping charges, and when field fabrication is required (cutting down a 10’ insert to 3’) you have to deburr the cut section. Another option to consider is a flame retardant polymer insert, or WBTForm which holds a UL 94V-O rating. The material is shipped in rolls up to 250’ in a single length. The material cuts with a knife or scissors and simply rolls out within the cabletray. In addition, it can be ordered to fit the specific depth of the tray that covers both the bottom and sides of the tray, not only offering bottom support, but also hiding the cables from view, creating a cleaner installation aesthetic. In commercial applications where the ceiling may be painted white, white tray with white WBTForm completely hides tray and cabling, camouflaging into the background.
BONDING/GROUNDING THE TRAY Proper Bonding of tray sections is a uniformly accepted practice, in addition to being a safety issue. UL Classified manufacturers provide UL stickers on each tray section, noting their UL listing and confirming the tray has been properly tested. This UL classification is an electrical review, and in the US has no bearing on the load capabilities of the tray. Zinc tray sections should use the manufacturers recommended number of splice hardware. If the tray is painted, many times the installer will need to remove the powdercoat/paint finish in order for the splice hardware to make a metal/metal contact. The challenges here are that removing paint at each splice point is time/cost consuming, and that uncoated steel will tend to form corrosion at that point where all protection has been removed. All of WBT’s painted tray utilizes PreGalv steel for the crosswires. Before paint, the splice area of the tray is masked off, so in the field the installer spends no time removing paint at the splice points. Also there is protected steel at those points, so there is no opportunity for corrosion to form on the metal crosswires. If the consultant has Continued on page 12 FOR FREE INFO, CIRCLE 40 ON READER SERVICE CARD

specified an additional ground wire attached to each tray section, the same can be done (masking the PreGalv crosswire on the vertical, so again no time/labor is spent removing paint and attaching a ground clip or bolt).
LEED If the project/installation is a LEED project, insuring a maximum amount of recycled steel content in the tray is extremely important. Many manufacturers can certify a certain percentage of recycled steel in their product. WBT specifies 100% recycled US steel in its tray systems. Mill PreGalv steel offers a minimized environmental impact over post zinc plate tray sections. Galvanized material at the mill reduces the need for caustic chemicals after tray fabrication to clean the tray sections before the zinc bath. In addition, transport to/from the plater is eliminated, and material goes directly from the steel mill, to the tray manufacturer, to the customer. Be sure to look for a cleaned PreGalv tray from a supplier. Cleaning the PreGalv eliminates any lubricants or weld soot from the manufacturing process. Cleaning PreGalv material is accomplished utilizing brushes to wipe the tray clean, and buff the overall steel to a uniform finish and appearance.
U.S. MANUFACTURED/ CONTENT With the origin of basket tray in Europe, many of today’s suppliers still rely on a supply chain that reaches across the Atlantic. While there has been an explosion of tray suppliers recently, there are still many that have lighter gauge product shipped from overseas. It is an important consideration to ask whether the supplier does, in fact, produce their own product, and are those products manufactured in the
12
process, which can be a hazard to both cables, and installers. For those reasons most will shy away from this finish.
LOAD Most basket/mesh tray is over-engineered for communications applications. In all but the most extreme applications, the fill capacity of the tray will be realized before the load capacity of the tray comes into consideration. Raising Inverter Efficacy:
the Next Specification Frontier

n any business management 100-level course, one of the first concepts covered is the difference between being efficient and being effective—between “doing things right” and “doing the right thing.” While the word efficient has nearterm implications as an agent in increasing productivity and reducing waste, the word effective implies the long haul, a tangible result inevitably following the efficient agent. Business managers quickly learn the difference between (and value in) being merely efficient—getting a lot done with less—and being more effective, by using that efficiency to inspire and deliver results that improve their company’s position, morale, and ultimately bottom line.
14
The power to produce effective results is called efficacy. And not surprisingly, the differences between short-term efficiency and long-term effectiveness, and the over-arching principle of efficacy, apply just as much to power management as they do to people management. That’s a point underscored by Richard Leverton in a recent article where he identifies five “Potentially Incorrect Beliefs Currently Prevalent in the Solar Energy Industry,” specifically challenging the popular idea that “the most important metric in PV power electronics is efficiency.”* Leverton makes a provocative case that, while important, efficiency isn’t every-

thing when it comes to power inverters. The reason? As he states it, “efficiency measures losses—efficacy measures yield.” And smarter, or “enhanced” inverters, can achieve higher efficacy by operating not only more efficiently but also more intelligently and over longer periods of time, improving their annual yield. Leverton goes on to offer documented comparisons showing that enhanced higher-efficacy inverters can generate up to 30% more power per year from an identical array connected to a simpler high efficiency type. At OutBack, we’ve long known that inverter efficiency is only part of the story. The new 230V OutBack Radian GS7048 inverter/charger applies the principle of higher efficacy to a battery-based Grid/Hybrid design with the goal of fully managing and mastering a wide variety of energy-production and use scenarios. That goal is important to remember when comparing inverter specifications, especially efficiency. While grid-interactive inverters (capable of both off-grid and grid-tied operation) on the surface appear to have a slight efficiency disadvantage over grid-tied designs, keep in mind that Continued on page 16 the first effectively

runs a “three-ring circus” of managing energy flow in multiple directions, charging batteries, and inverting power, while inverting power is all that “one-trick pony”
While saving money during the day, a simple grid-tied system cannot offset utility consumption at night or during peak hours, and it cannot provide any backup or power during a shortage, outage or lifechanging emergency. The rapid growth and interest in smarter, more agile gridinteractive systems that can do all three jobs well (save money during normal operation, store energy for peak/offset usage, and provide emergency backup for outages and shortages) is behind OutBack’s goal of perfecting the Grid/Hybrid inverter class by making the technology both more efficient and effective, especially over a wider range of power-management schemes. The Radian series takes the higher ground of high efficacy very seriously. One of the first places to address inverter efficacy is in tare loss, the amount grid-tied inverters can do—they simply of energy an inverter “loses” to simply convert DC from PV/solar elements into running itself instead of contributing it useable AC, and consequently pack a lot back to the power system. Generally, the less intelligence and capability inside. Continued on page 18 bigger the inverter

the greater the inherent losses. A large inverter requires a higher energy level to saturate its transformer and power-up and operate its internal electronics—and will consume that power day and night regardless of whether the connected loads are high or practically non-existent. Since the company started, OutBack has excelled at “building-block systems” made up of multiples of smaller inverters, and used advanced communications technology to enable them to work more efficiently together through intelligence. So if a 14 kW system is made up of four 3.6kW inverters consisting of a “master” that can shut down the “slaves” when full power is not required (as it is the majority of the time), that system will be substantially more efficient than one using a single large 14 kW inverter that must “keep all its lights on” regardless of how little power is needed. The Radian-class inverters take this idea to a new level, and are inherently modular with two identical power mod-

ules inside instead of a single large design. So, a Radian can partially “sleep” by turning half its capacity off at any time thanks to its unique dual-module architecture. And, a higher-power system comprised of multiple “stacked” Radians will be extremely efficient as a result.. As added benefit of dual-module design, the Radian is more reliable and de-

pendable for two reasons. It has the ability to operate at well under its maximum capacity for much of its operational life, and has redundancy built-in so that even if one module should fail the other can take over and run the system at reduced power until the unit is serviced. In addition, it can be serviced in the field and brought back up to full-capacity easily and quickly. The Radian features an advanced transformer with low-idle topology that further increases operational efficiency. And its intelligent power management technology allows it to set more effective energy priorities. Specifically, the Radian is capable of keeping a battery-bank charged entirely using renewable energy instead of relying on grid power to hold the batteries at full charge. That’s especially important in a grid-interactive system, and why battery management is the Radian’s top priority, followed by using any surplus to run loads and, if anything is left over, selling the reContinued on page 20 mainder back to the

grid. In effect, the Radian can master virtually any grid, renewable and utility scenario, allowing the user to always get the highest value out of the conditions present. Beyond operational energy savings through lower losses and improved design, the Radian takes efficacy to a higher level as a single platform capable of not only operating as a grid-tied and off-grid inverter/charger, but also managing divergence of applications and energy flow to cover a much wider range of needs as residential and commercial power demands also evolve. With renewable systems expected to make greater contributions to conventionally-fueled power grids of every size and type, increasing network complexity will dictate combining the best attributes of high-performance off-grid and grid-tied inverters into next-grid inverters, a category best exemplified by the Grid/Hybrid Radian. These are just some highlights from its power mode portfolio. Generator: We often joke that the real competition to an inverter is a generator. The Radian is equipped with sophisticated generator functions, capable of auto-starting, stopping and controlling a generator either to stand in for the grid or augment renewably generated electricity. If a downed grid does not come back up, for example, a Radian in off-grid mode would use both generator and renewable energy sources to run loads instead of running down batteries. Even without renewable energy, such a combination of inverter and generator is a significant gain in efficiency for the energy system—the generator runs loads part of the time, but can simultaneously charge batteries so that the inverter can run those same loads later without a
corresponding increase in fuel usage. Backup: Both stand-alone and interactive grid-connected systems will need to protect and manage expensive battery banks upon which they operationally depend. The Radian provides safety features such as monitoring and adjusting for battery temperature compensation and other parameters. In locations with computers and other sensitive loads are present, the value of a smarter inverter that can switch between on-grid and off-grid operation seamlessly is obvious, especially in UPS applications. Support: Some energy scenarios involve chronic supply problems, such as weak local grids, inadequate local generators, or both. The Radian inverter/charger with battery backup can temporarily draw power from the batteries to augment a problematic AC supply by making the power-management decisions necessary to precisely balance available sources and maintain stability. Offset: An inverter capable of energy divergence (managing multiple sources and directional flows) is capable of sending excess energy downstream to run loads after storing up all the DC the system can handle, in lieu of selling energy upstream back to the grid if that is limited by local regulations. In places such as Hawaii, with both very high electricity costs and limited sell-back options, the ability to put every bit of renewable energy to work is invaluable, and exactly what the Radian was designed to accomplish. MiniGrid: In systems with sufficient renewable energy, this inverter function (also called HBX/high battery transfer) is really the inverse of a backup system. Here, the batteries and renewable sources
are the primary electricity source and the grid is a distant secondary, mostly used for conditions when renewable energy is in short supply. This means that in such a system, an inverter may be an off-grid type up to 90 percent of the time, but capable of switching over as conditions warrant—and again, something for which the Radian was designed. As more people realize the benefits of combining off-grid independence with grid-tied economics, multi-talented hybrid inverters such as the OutBack Radian, capable of operating in multiple modes and with higher efficacy across all of them, will be frequently found at the center of smarter, more diversified power systems. Terms such as efficacy and hybrid will be increasingly used to describe the more complex and competent products making up the systems for the next grid—and maybe even challenging some of the closely-held belief systems going back to renewable energy’s beginning stages. ❏

Megger
egger is the world-recognized leader in the area of insulation testing and offers a complete range of 1-kV insulation testers: the MIT200 Series, MIT300 Series and the “flagship” family, the MIT400 Series. These insulation testers are designed to meet the varying needs and budgets of all types of end users. Megger is a company founded on insulation testing, not a company specializing in other testing areas that adds insulation testers to their line based on some other test instrument platform. As such, the foundation of Megger’s instrument design is “rock solid”, a development platform that goes back to the beginning of insulation testing, in fact, back to the beginnings of the electrical industry as we know it.
Megger MIT400 Series The MIT400 Series is a line of high performance insulation testers rated to CAT IV 600 V provides that greater safety when testing at higher voltage levels. The MIT400 Series offer test voltages from 10 to 1000 V, and includes a special user-selectable 10 V to 100 V in 1 V increments tester for low voltage insulation testing requirements. The units include an exceptional insulation resistance measurement range that extends from 20 Gigohms to 200 Gigohms, with the option to display the insulation test voltage or leakage current on the secondary display. Timed insulation testing for PI and DAR testing is available on certain models. A 200 mA continuity measurement is available with a 0.01-ohm resolution for fast accurate cable resistance measurement. This can be set to 20 mA where conformity to electrical testing regulations is not required, extending battery life.
Megger MIT300 Series The MIT300 Series is designed along Megger’s familiar principle of ascending features with no loss of basic quality. Each of the five models is built on a basic design ensuring the quality and reliability that are Megger’s trademarks. MIT300 is the simplest model, offering core functions of highest quality but no additional features that may prove redundant in basic applications. For applications where a 1 kV test must be avoided, the MIT300 offers a 250 and 500 V test only. Combined with continuity and 22

voltage warning, this is the model of choice for the simplest applications. If basic function is still the goal but a 1 kV test required, the MIT310 is the perfect fit. With the possibility of working at higher voltages, safe operation has been further enhanced by the inclusion of a default voltmeter. For those who prefer the traditional mechanical analog type of instrument, the MIT310A offers everything in the MIT310, but with a moving coil display. The analog display is enhanced by black decals on a white background, to give high contrast and improved visibility. The family is completed by the full-featured MIT320 and MIT330. The former adds a kilohm range for measurements between the extremes of continuity and high voltage. With this feature, measurements can be made continuously from 0.01 ohm to 999 megohms. A backlit display is further enhanced by backlit selections, to make both the setup and results visible in poor light. The MIT320 also offers audible alarms on both the continuity and megohm ranges, adjustable across the entire range. Finally, the MIT330 offers everything described in the MIT320, plus storage of up to 1000 results, downloading through a USB port via included software, and a display indication of remaining memory.
Megger MIT200 Series Need only basic 1-kV insulation and continuity testing, with economy a paramount consideration? No need to sacrifice! Megger offers the only top quality line of inexpensive testers on the market...the MIT200 Series. Though designed with economy in mind, these testers offer no loss of the quality and reliability that the name Megger implies. Furthermore, there has been no sacrifice of safety, which is a serious problem with inexpensive testers that have cut cost at the risk of arc flash and operator error. Four models are available, differing only in the test voltages offered: MIT200 is a 500 V model for standard applications; MIT210 is a 1 kV model where higher test voltage is in order; MIT220 offers two voltages, 250 and 500, for more sensitive applications where a 1 kV test is to be avoided; for full-spectrum applications, MIT230 offers all three voltages, 250, 500 and 1 kV. ❏

Southwire’s SIMpull® CoilPAK™ Payoff Revolutionizes the Construction Process Eliminating Cumbersome Spools Increases Safety, Reduces Worker Fatigue, Improves Profits To dramatically enhance productivity and worker safety, Southwire has introduced the SIMpull® CoilPAK™ payoff, changing the way electrical contractors install branch circuit wiring. The SIMpull CoilPAK payoff eliminates the need for heavy, cumbersome spools. Instead workers use a special, patent-pending process to coil NoLube® SIMpull THNN® wire contained in a sturdy, yet lightweight package, which results in a completely tangle-free pull. The SIMpull CoilPAK payoff uses the same inertia-free pulling design as the SIMpull® WireBARREL™ wire drum, making the wire much easier to push and pull. This innovative packaging allows for increased versatility on the job site. The package is molded with a handle that makes it easy to carry around, and when pulling wire from the package, it can lay flat or stacked directly on the floor or lift. Southwire also offers a cart, dolly and hand truck that are all easily maneuverable and allow for installation of multiple SIMpull CoilPAK payoffs.
“We’ve tested the Southwire SIMpull CoilPAK payoff on a number of jobsites and the feedback from contractors has been nothing short of remarkably enthusiastic,” said Norman Adkins, president of Southwire’s Electrical Division. “The SIMpull CoilPAK payoff is a giant leap forward making the entire circuit wire installation process safer and more productive. Contractors tell us the days of the wire spool and trying to match wires and pull from a wire wagon are numbered.” The addition of the SIMpull CoilPAK payoff completes Southwire’s SIMpull™ Circuit Management System, and it’s the latest example of Southwire’s revolutionary combination of wiring, materials, equipment and services. When all of Southwire’s SIMpull Circuit Management System products are used together, they combine to help provide a significant impact on the time, margins and labor associated with all of your circuit pulls. “The launch of the SIMpull CoilPAK payoff is a game-changer,” Adkins said. “We are helping contractors beat their circuit branch wiring
budgets by eliminating wasted time caused by having to handle numerous wire spools on a job site. Simply said, we’ve made circuit wire management completely Spool-Proof™.” ❏ About Southwire Company A leader in technology and innovation, Southwire Company is one of North America’s largest wire and cable producers. Kaiser Electric President: If You Can’t Work Safe, You Can’t Work at Kaiser Steve Giacin, president of Kaiser Electric, has made safety the number one priority at his company, telling his workers that safety is not negotiable, and if they don’t want to work safe, then Kaiser is not the company for them. The awards case in Kaiser Electric’s front lobby is a testament to the company’s commitment to safety. Kaiser Electric was awarded a Work Safety Excellence Award at the American Subcontractors Association (ASA) - Midwest Council’s 20th Anniversary Awards Gala on April 13. In fact, Kaiser has qualified or received an ASA safety award 10 times out of the last 14 years. The criteria for the ASA Midwest Safety Awards is a rigorous process that evaluates a company’s complete commitment to the overall workplace safety and health environment for their employees. Factors considered are recordable injuries, days away lost time incident rates, ongoing safety training, a clear management commitment for safety, and employee participation in the safety process. Giacin says he tirelessly promotes safety as a company culture and recently revamped Kaiser’s safety program to require that work-
ers wear safety glasses and gloves at all times when on a job site. He has even provided workers with four different glove options for performing different tasks and implemented a safety inspection project form that project managers must complete each time they arrive on a job site. Giacin also holds monthly meetings with his supervisors and bi-monthly meetings with his project management staff with safety always the first item on the agenda for every meeting. “From management, to the supervisors to the actual field installers, we don’t just talk the talk, we walk the walk,” Giacin said. “Creating a company culture for safety needs to start at the top, from my office, with me.” Workers in violation of Kaiser’s tough safety standards are first given a verbal warning, followed by a written warning and suspension for not complying a second time. Giacin proudly boasts that his tough safety standards have resulted in an Experience Modification Rate (EMR) as low as .72 for the company. EMR is a number used by insurance companies to gauge both past cost of injuries and future chances of risk. The lower

Product FOCUS STEINEL Adds 347 VAC Capability to its Growing High Bay Occupancy Sensor Product Line Steinel America has expanded its line of occupancy sensors to include models with 347/480 VAC for use in high bay installations. The HBS 200 and HBS 300 high bay occupancy sensors operate at 347/480 VAC. They mount directly to a high bay lighting fixture or junction box and use passive infrared technology to sense occupancy. Multiple highly sensitive pyroelectric sensors (two in the HBS 200 and three in the HBS 300) are used in the products to provide reliable, uninterrupted
coverage. This results in a higher level of complete coverage than is achieved with single pyroelectric sensor products. The high bay sensors are engineered to perform at mounting heights as high as 45 feet. The HBS 200 provides a linear reach up to 100 feet, ideal for high bay aiseway spaces. The HBS 300 provides 360 degrees of coverage to control high bay open areas. Warehouse spaces are typically left unoccupied for long periods of time and usage is intermittent. Because of this, occupancy sensor use is ideal, realizing significant energy savings with quick paybacks. With highbay lighting control applications, achieving the right coverage helps to maximize savings, so that fewer sensors can be used to achieve proper detection. To help users achieve precisely the coverage needed, the coverage area may be adjusted with the provided plastic lens covers that conveniently snap to the front of the sensor lens. And for applications requiring the benefit of wireless control zones, the sensor can be used with Steinel’s MF1-UL Wireless Control Module. As with all Steinel lighting controls, the HBS 200 and HBS 300 utilizes German engineering that pays careful attention to detail and strongly emphasizes quality. Furthermore, the devices are manufactured in Europe and comply with RoHS standards. For more information, visit www.steinel.net FOR FREE INFO, CIRCLE 50 ON READER SERVICE CARD

Product FOCUS Insulation Meter Identifies Dangerous Electrical Wiring Damaged or degraded wire insulation can cause breakdowns in critical electrical equipment such as generators, switchgear and motor windings. Far worse, it can deliver a lethal shock to anyone that comes into contact with the current through a short circuit or a short to ground. To safeguard new and existing installations, IDEAL offers its easy-to-use Digital Insulation Meter that quickly determines the integrity of insulation by identifying capacitive, absorption and leakage current at multiple test voltages and resistance up to 20G ohms. In addition, this versatile diagnostic tool measures earth-bond resistance so the user can verify the continuity of protective bonding. It also automatically senses and displays AC/DC voltage to 600V, plus calculates the Polarization Index (PI) and Dielectric Absorption Ratio (DAR). Insulation testing is most effective as part of a scheduled maintenance program. Repetitive testing is made easier with the IDEAL meter’s straightforward Pass/Fail function and internal storage of values. While it is compact enough to be held in one hand, the meter is durable enough to withstand the rigors of heavy commercial and industrial usage. Safety is a given with all IDEAL products. The digital insulation meter was designed with a 600 V Cat IV overvoltage rating and will disable itself if connected to a live circuit exceeding 30 volts. A live voltage hazard indicator is also prominently displayed on the front panel to warn the electrician before use on an energized circuit. Once testing is complete, the meter automatically discharges capacitive voltage from the equipment under test that may present a shock hazard. The IDEAL Digital Insulation Meter (Catalog Part# 61-797) is immediately available. It ships complete with carrying case, test leads and batteries. For more information, visit www.idealindustries.com
