requirements of existing junction boxes and incorporate new user friendly features. We met with electrical contractors from across the nation asking them about junction boxes - their likes and their dislikes, where and how junction boxes were used and what could be improved. By doing this we learned a lot about what was important to contractors installing junction boxes in the field. At the same time, we worked with our R&D center to develop a proprietary gasket formulation that would work with our new technology and deliver a seal that met the highest NEMA rating possible. Another key design feature that we considered was how to create a completely non-metallic fastening system. Dealing with loose screws added a lot of time during the installation of a junction box, not to mention the corrosion issues that can occur with metallic screws. Designed for indoor and outdoor use and features that will save contractors time to perform in the most demanding envi- (and money) during the installation The result is the new Scepter JBox. ronments, the Scepter JBox is loaded with process. Utilizing dual injection molding technology, the Scepter JBox features a fully integrated molded gasket. No more wasted time spent positioning a loose gasket into a cover or replacing a lost one on the jobsite. The gasket was specifically formulated to be resistant to oils (NEMA 12 & 13). The cover/box design ensures a dependable seal while protecting the gasket from physical damage and external environmental forces and for submersion (NEMA 6P). The patented fastener system is fully integrated into the design of the box, 100% non-metallic and manufactured from a high-strength engineered polymer. The quarter-turn fasteners are hand-close and 12

parallel and perpendicular. And by staying inside the “drill zone”, sufficient clearance on the inside of the box is guaranteed for a lock-nut or hub. Molded mounting feet are positioned at all four corners of the box eliminating more loose parts that required assembling. This location places the mounting feet out of the way of conduit connections and flush with the back of the box for close surface mounting. The integrated design offers improved strength and the corner position make them easily accessible to power tools. Until now, all junction box covers have been molded with support ribs on the inside of the cover. The new cover design 14

has eliminated those cross ribs offering a completely open and flat cover. Both the outside face and inside surface are clear and accessible for devices to be easily mounted. A first for PVC junction boxes, the Scepter JBox features self-tapping, molded standoffs in the base of the box for the mounting of back panels and DIN rails. Available on sizes 8” and larger, the standoffs are strategically placed to center mount DIN rails or install Back Panels. As an add-on accessory, the Pole Mount Kit (PMK4-12) makes installing the junction box onto utility power poles quick and easy. The universal kit works with wooden, concrete, steel and fiberglass

poles of round, square and octagonal shape up to 15” in diameter. Contractors who have used the pole mount kit say that it is so easy to use they are able to attach a box to a pole in less than 10 minutes from opening to installed. Scepter JBoxes are ideal for use wherever PVC conduit and fittings are employed. They are well suited for a wide range of applications such as corrosive environments, agricultural, wash down, water and waste-water treatment facilities, marine and car washes. ❏ For more information visit www.scepterinnovation.com.

Maintenance Concerns for Arc Flash Protective Clothing

By Vincent R. Miller

aintaining PPE has been an OSHA requirement of employee safety. When an employer addresses the specialty clothing of arc flash, it can be very confusing and requires evaluating the services you will use in maintaining your protection. The manufacturers of the cloth used in the arc flash protective clothing provide

the manufacturers of the shirts, pants and other products with information on cleaning these products. Companies, such as Westex, provide a document on washing and dry-cleaning these garments to maintain the integrity of the protection they have manufactured. Detailed information about water PH and soap and stain removers are contained in the instructions including the number of times you may dry clean the cloth before you water wash the items. Garment inspection for tears, discolAn employee should inspect their prooration of fabric, fraying of fabric, and tective clothing prior to use. This is not always accomplished when you look at the work schedule they have. But it is a critical item to be done. If the clothing is damaged, it needs to be removed from service and fixed or replaced. So, daily inspection is required but would a monthly or other periodic cycle of inspection be worth implementing? Stopping a job because your PPE is damaged has financial consequences, so regular inspection of clothing prior to a job would allow time to replace defective equipment. The following garment, a bib overall, was returned to the manufacturer for a broken buckle on the bib straps. As you can see, the knees and lower leg are showing excessive wear. The fabric was excessively frayed at the knee. The bottom of the leg is frayed from not raising the length to above

shoe height. An employee performing work at a lower level caused this and he did not have a insulated mat between him and the concrete. Not all our work is at chest level, so he performed the work with the resources he had available. The owner of this PPE needs to purchase a new bib overall. His jacket was unaffected. But he is now purchasing new PPE before the expected life cycle of the fabric is achieved. The suit was stored properly and laundered infrequently. And don’t forget the face protection needed. Abuse, improper storage of the PPE lend themselves to scratched or cracked face shields . The protection factor of your shield is greatly reduced and severe injuries to your face and eyes could result.

In summary, employees need to be provided the information to perform daily inspections. They are a critical part of the process. Management should inspect their products on a regular basis so we don’t have loss of income from work stoppage. Keep your storage so that damage doesn’t occur. Many times employees do not report damaged equipment for fear of discipline. This process should be addressed. An emphasis on proper care, storage and use should be encouraged. “Things happen” on jobs due to sharp edges and other equipment issues. Let’s make the difference and save lives! PPE – USE IT DON’T ABUSE IT! ❏ For more information, visit Miller Safety Consultants at: www.millersafetyltd.com, email Vince at: sales@millersafetyltd.com or give him a call at (703)367-0404.

Boxes are designed to fit into standard 2” x 4” wall construction. Trade size knock-outs range from ¾” to 2” on the bottom and side. A small egress door in the front of the box allows wires and cables to exit while the main door is secured. These all-steel boxes are painted white inside and out and can also be painted to coordinate with wall colors. A black painted version is also available. For more information, visit www.legrand.us
