F
ounded in 1989, Encore Wire began its legacy as a residential building wire manufacturer in a 68,000 sq. ft. building in McKinney, Texas. Twenty-six years later they have grown, progressively expanding every couple of years, into a 425-acre campus with over 2 million square feet under roof. Encore’s growth is a direct result of their willingness to listen and react to their customers’ needs. Today, Encore Wire offers both copper and aluminum building wire in residential, commercial and industrial applications.
6
In addition to expanding their product line, Encore Wire also focuses on labor and time savings, understanding that budget, safety and efficiency win the job. In 2010, Encore added a LEED ® Platinum certified research and development facility called the Encore TechLab®, the first of its kind in North Texas, to its campus. Here, Encore Wire and its team of engineers not only perform UL testing for wire and cable, but also became industry game-changers with innovative solutions like the PullPro™ and the Reel Payoff®. THE PULLPRO Introduced to the market in January 2015, the PullPro is the most intelligent way to pull circuit wire today. The unique wire coiling design allows for a tangle-free and memory-free wire pull, retaining weight distribution during the duration of your pull, from start to finish. There are no additional tools or equipment needed, saving valuable time and money. Each PullPro fits together for a rock-solid, steady pull and can be stacked vertically, snapped horizontally or positioned in an “X” pattern to fit any job space. Like with all of Encore’s innovative solutions, safety continues to remain a priority on job sites. That’s why the PullPro weighs less than 30 pounds, providing a safe weight to carry, stack or move. It even sits up, so you don’t have to bend over. The case is manufactured from durable material that can withstand nearly any drop. The technology used in the PullPro allows for a seamless wire pull with or without its
case. Now, that’s how Encore Wire protects your investment.
THE REEL PAYOFF In 2013, Encore introduced their Reel Payoff, which continues to be the industry’s only self-spinning wooden reel. The Reel Payoff typically saves 75% total time compared to a traditional wire pull. It has changed wire pulling Continued on page 12

INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS BY ENCORE WIRE COLORED FEEDERS In 1999, Encore Wire introduced “true colors” to our THHN/THWN-2 commercial building wire PVC and Nylon jacketing, starting the trend for colored feeder. Colored feeders eliminate the need for phase tape resulting in time and labor savings. Encore won EC&M Product of the Year for their colored non-metallic residential wire in 2001. SMARTCOLOR ID After they entered metal-clad and armored cable production in 2006, Encore developed and patented a shrink-wrap identification system for their MC/AC cable known as SmartColorID. Inspectors now can easily identify each of Encore’s MC/AC cables without having to risk his/her safety.

What to Consider When Spec’ing Larger UPSs By Duston Nixon, Marketing Communications Manager, Minuteman Power Technologies
T
he benefits of a UPS, or uninterruptible power supply, are well known to most in the electrical field. Whether the system is attached to communications equipment, servers and other IT devices, or security system components, the reliable power provided is a necessity to the ongoing business and safety of those on-site.
14
Installation of smaller systems is fairly straightforward in most cases – simply select the proper system and connect it to utility power and your equipment. However, the story can change dramatically when looking at larger single phase systems. This includes 2,000-10,000VA systems, which present their own set of challenges.

These can include the input and output connections, specific startup and shutdown procedures, parallel installation capability, and often a more complicated specification and ordering process.

ble, and allows them to work together to back up critical loads. This can be done in two ways, as mentioned previously. Parallel for Redundancy: multiple units are installed and work together to provide the base UPS capacity redundantly. That is, in the event that one UPS experiences a problem, the secondary system will pick up the load, greatly reducing the chance of downtime in the event that a unit malfunction occurs. Parallel for Capacity: multiple units are installed and connected together, but work together as a single unit. This provides the combined UPS capacity and enables much larger loads to be attached; as much as 20 to 40kVA in some cases. These configurations vary from one manufacturer to the next, and can require either factory pre-configuration, or on-site user configuration to function properly. UPS configurations vary, but most large systems include multiple components to make a single system. These may include the control unit, battery pack, and any optional accessories such as transformers and maintenance bypass switches. When specifying these systems, it is important to make sure all of the necessary components are included in your spec. Industry NEWS Copper Industry Provides Electrical Contractors, Facility Managers and Professional Engineers Free Continuing Education Seminars CDA Electrical Program Benefits Professionals at Data Centers, Military Facilities, Broadcasting and Communication Centers
The Copper Development Association (CDA) is offering continuing education to professional engineers, electrical contractors and facility managers through a host of different seminars and presentations focusing on proper copper wiring techniques, temperature adjustment and other electrical applications. CDA is now registered with the Registered Continuing Education Program (RCEP), a nationwide portal for education for engineers, surveyors and A/C/E industry professionals. These free courses cover a wide range of applications, and may lead to Professional Development Hours (PDH’s) recognized in most states for renewal of Professional Engineer licenses. (Acceptance of these programs by individual states should be determined by the attendee.) Training, seminars and presentations include:
• Grounding and bonding for sensitive locations, such as broadcasting, emergency communications, and data centers • Rooftop and ambient temperature corrections • Copper and aluminum wiring systems and connectability issues • Energy efficient wiring systems and voltage drop considerations • High efficiency motors and transformers and life-cycle costing “CDA is happy to offer electrical professionals or facility operators the proper training and education that they need to ensure that their facilities are operating safely, efficiently, and with little or no down-time or transient damage.” said David Brender, the National Program Manager for Electrical Applications at CDA. “Whether it’s new construction or a retrofit project, many dif-

Our only requirement is that the person or group requesting the seminar organize and arrange for the presentation.” In addition to professional engineers and electrical contractors, these courses are open to inspectors, apprentices and plant operators that work at data centers, military facilities of every type, broadcasting, public service communication centers, manufacturing plants and office complexes. CDA tailors a session on a variety of electrical topics for a group of 20 or more. For smaller groups, CDA may schedule more than one presentation in close geographical vicinity. A minimum of one hour is required to offer PDH’s, but seminars up to a full day or more can be arranged. There is no charge for nonprofits, and for-profit companies pay only for travel expenses. ❏
