medical and recreational cannabis industry currently sweeping the nation is expected to top $146.4B by 2025. Through Growlite, Barron with multiple years of continued growth and success in horticultural lighting applications has strengthened Barron’s position in the horticulture lighting market, now deploying its lighting expertise in engineering, research and product development as well as its UL certified test lab to design fixtures with state-of-the art technologies for this quickly expanding horticultural industry. There is a lot more to horticulture lighting than just running a lamp over a plant. Choosing between various fixture types, light sources, color spectrums, PAR outputs, distribution footprints, CRIs and CCTs can make entry into this market sector very intimidating. Lighting professionals can help cut through a lot of the confusion with their in-depth product knowledge, but the real opportunities are gained from combining the product expertise of lighting professionals with the real-world, practical application experience and knowledge of the indoor grow experts. The ultimate goal of indoor grows and greenhouse facilities is to recreate a sustainable, consistent growing environment in indoor spaces. The most important element is the lighting since it is the engine that powers all of the plant’s photosynthetic processes including cell development, nutrient generation and fruit/flower creation. The light that plants utilize is measured as PAR (photosynthetic active radiation) and is expressed in units called umols (you moles), however while PAR may be king of metrics in horticulture lighting it is not the only measurement that should be used when selecting grow lighting. Critically important considerations are the SPD (spectral power distribution) curves, the intensity measured in foot-candles or lumens, Continued on page 12

as well as CRIs and CCTs. With the enormous amount of money being spent on these indoor grow facilities, investors are going to require safety certifications like ETL and UL/cUL, open-rated lamps and the use of specification grade materials and production practices to provide the assurance of product safety and continuing product innovation for the grow industry. It is equally important that manufacturers offer support and education to contractors, distributors, counter personnel, growers, and to the engineering specification community. By providing the resources to assist with the lighting layouts, performance comparisons and par value distribution charts, Barron leads the marketplace by enabling its customers to choose the right fixture and create the optimal lighting design for any grower’s specific needs. Application guides, Spec sheets, FAQ’s and installation instructions, case studies, webinars and even Facebook tips and examples, provide the training and support Barron customers need when working within the unique horticultural community. Grow facilities typically consume huge numbers of HID lamps each year, and it’s illegal to “knowingly” throw spent bulbs into the trash bin with fines that can reach up to $25,000 per violation. Barron is at the forefront of the recycling needs of the lighting industry and is pleased to announce the Growlite Lamp Recycling Program. With the announcement of its 12
newest program, Barron is once again innovating by diverting these lamps from landfills - where heavy metals which are dangerous for humans, animals, and the environment can, and will, seep into the groundwater with disastrous results for the environment. For lighting solutions covering everything from outside of the building to the inside lobby, and grow rooms from seed to harvest including design, operations and compliance, Barron is here to help. Growlite is committed to deploying its wealth of experience and resources to service the horticultural market with forward-looking products and programs designed to increase crop yield and earning potential. With increased crop yield in mind, Growlite recently introduced the release of its newest product offering - The Black Box Control System from Growlite is the horticultural industry’s first large-scale reliable lighting controller coupled with environmental monitoring and complete data logging. The Black Box can control the entire grow site from lighting and HVAC to fertigation and security. PA One Call System, Inc. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | BY
LINDA MORROW
PA ONE CALL SYSTEM, INC. IS A PRIVATELY FUNDED non-
profit corporation in Pennsylvania and part of the national 811 “Call Before You Dig” network. In Pennsylvania, anyone planning to dig as part of any excavation project, including private property, is required by law to investigate whether their excavation could potentially interfere with any utility or service lines, such as telephone, electric, natural gas, sewer, and cable, that are buried underground. When 811 is dialed in the state of Pennsylvania, that phone call is taken by the call center at PA One Call System, Inc, located in southwestern Pennsylvania in the borough of West Mifflin. Excavators must place the call a minimum of three business days prior to the planned excavation date. PA One Call takes information regarding the location of the intended dig and contacts those utilities that may have underground lines in the vicinity of the referenced dig site. The affected utilities then promptly visit the site and mark the location of their lines beneath the ground’s surface with paint or flags, providing the excavator visible clues to the existence of service lines lying below. As time is of the essence for this chain of events to be completed prior to all excavations, Bill Kiger, President and CEO of PA One Call, recognized the need for the 14

call center to always be operational and established redundant functionality by setting up two independent computer rooms and phone systems. Uptime is guaranteed by a 60 kVA Mitsubishi Electric 1100B uninterruptible power supply (UPS) backing up each room. The first Mitsubishi Electric 1100B was installed in 2014, replacing a competitive unit. When asked why he decided to change brands, Mr. Kiger cited several reasons for his displeasure with the previous units. He felt that their technology was outdated, as well as lacking the ability to be upgraded. He was also not happy with the service he received on the units and experienced problems with the generator associated with them. When the time came to replace the older unit, he consulted with a local vendor, and Mitsubishi Electric UPSs were recommended along with a Kohler generator. Perfect for server rooms, network closets, and control rooms, Mitsubishi Electric’s 1100 Series UPS possessed some characteristics that Mr. Kiger was particularly interested in. Each power module is hot swappable, meaning that individual modules can be removed and worked on without taking the UPS offline. The trays are front facing, allowing for maximum convenience and reduced maintenance costs. The 1100 Series UPSs also have fully digital display screens, greatly facilitating both monitoring and servicing. Expandability is another desirable feature inherent in the 1100 Series. Its modular design enables supplemental modules to be added over time as warranted by increasing capacity needs, making expansion faster, easier and more economical. Finally, the 1100 Series UPS also features N+1 redundancy constructed of modular power electronics in parallel. If one of the modules were to fail, the 1100’s internal controls would isolate the module while continuing to provide power to the critical load. Four years later when it was time to replace the second UPS, Mr. Kiger pulled the trigger on another Mitsubishi Electric 1100B without any hesitation. “Reliability is the most important factor when purchasing equipment to protect against power outages and I haven’t experienced a single problem with the first 1100,” stated Mr. Kiger. For Mr. Kiger and PA One Call, the 1100B UPS from Mitsubishi Electric truly is an uninterruptible power supply. ❏

Protect Yourself Miller Safety Consultants — A Leader in Arc Flash Protection VINCE MILLER STARTED MILLER SAFETY CONSULTANTS, a
veteran owned business in 1999. The goal of the business was to provide cost effective safety consulting, employee training such as: confined space entry, fall protection, electrical safety and provide sales of electrical shock and flash protective equipment and fall protection equipment to businesses in the Washington DC area. Reliance Industries provided fall protection products and much of the sales and training was on behalf of the supplier. In 2000, the owner decided to retire from his business, and Vince decided to discontinue the fall protection line of his business and concentrate more in the electrical training and products. Vince had been a distributor for Certified Insulated Products (CIP), a manufacturer of electrical insulated tools and electrical arc flash clothing manufactured by Otex in Rochester, New York. As a distributor, Vince provided sales through his internet website and much through relationships with electrical contractors. His training was a classroom environment and was provided directly to customers but he also taught as a sub-contractor for other safety consulting

companies and the Chesapeake Safety Council in Baltimore, Maryland. In 2005, Vince partnered with Vivid Learning Systems in Cascades, Washington to provide on-line training in safe work practices. Training in electrical safe work practices is still provided locally in the Washington DC area and as a partner with an electrical engineering firm and online. The training is based on the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) standards and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 70E standard. Miller Safety Consultants is now a distributor for Cementex USA, Burlington, New Jersey, for insulated tools and equipment and clothing from OTEX Protective, Rochester, New York. The majority of his sales of products are from the web-based store. Cementex is na-

tionally known for their quality equipment. Otex Protective is becoming more known for their quality clothing. For years, they have manufactured their products under other provider labels. Vince chose to not create his clothing line, but to sell the manufacturer product. Vince has worked with many electrical company employees to fine-tune the clothing to be more comfortable for the user. Working closely with the manufacturer, they have made slight changes in how the cloth pattern was modified to meet final production. An example is the lightweight 40 Calorie vented hood offered by Otex. The material is of the latest technology. The vented assembly is constructed for balance on the back of the hardhat and the airflow is 27 CFM to prevent fogging of the face shield and provide cooling to the worker. It took over a year to develop the product with the user prior to having the hood “flash tested”. This product is now standard issue with many electrical contractors. Being a small business and having quality providers has resulted in satisfied customers for Miller Safety Consultants. Being a direct supplier for OTEX Protective, another small business means customized customer needs can be met. ❏ For more information, visit Miller Safety Consultants at: www.electricalsafetysupply.com, email Vince at: sales@millersafetyltd.com or give him a call at (703)367-0404.

ing’s emergency lighting system, the process of selecting and integrating the various component parts from lights to exit signs and inverters is not a one-size-fits-all proposition. Much of the pain can be taken out of the process by simplifying the interaction and providing a single source. Design-Conscious Emergency Lights When emergency lighting is necessary, one of the most aesthetic options is actually to conceal it until it is required. Some ingenious units are even designed to blend in with the existing decor by being painted or covered with wallpaper.
For example, one manufacturer of specification-grade emergency lighting products, Isolite, offers the Genie, along with a more compact version called the Mini Genie, that remain fully recessed behind two flat panel doors until required. “If power is lost, the battery-powered units automatically open to light the way,” explains says Bill Lynch, President of Isolite.
Exit Signs
Selecting inverters that provide pure sine wave AC power, operate at their designated rating, and provide automated testing/reporting are the factors that should be considered in making a final inverter selection best suited for the application.
18
Although exit signs must be functional, they do not need to be ugly. A variety of aesthetic options exist including slim profiles, specialty finishes, and recessed power supplies that help units blend in with interior decor and architectural features. Because exit signs operate 24/7, however, they should also be energy efficient. As such, some energy efficient LED edgelit exit signs use less than 3 watts and offer a 3-hour emergency run time with a battery diagnostic monitoring system. Today, new “dual technology” exit signs are even combining the efficiency of LED lighting with revolutionary new photoluminescent materials to increase reliability and performance over decades of use. This hybrid approach combines two established exit sign technologies in a single unit – LED and photoluminescence. During normal power conditions, the sign is

When the power goes out, a translucent exit stencil diffusor made of photoluminescent material provides the illumination. This is charged by the LEDs while electric power is provided to the sign.
Inverters When a building-wide power outage occurs, electrical engineers have several options when it comes to powering emergency lighting systems mandated by the NFPA and International Building Code (IBC). The first is to install dedicated lighting fixtures that provide temporary power from built-in battery packs. The other is to utilize centrally located inverters tied to back-up batteries that can provide utility-grade power to both existing architectural and dedicated emergency lighting in the event of a power outage. However, there are multiple factors that should also be considered in making a final inverter selection that best suits the application. These include selecting inverters that provide pure sine wave AC power, operate at their designated rating, and provide automated testing/reporting. “When electrical engineers face tight deadlines to design emergency lighting systems so a building or facility can be opened for use, partnering with a vendor that offers comprehensive options can streamline the process,” concludes Lynch. “In this regard, some domestic manufacturers can provide a fully integrated system with as little as two weeks of lead time.” For more information, contact Isolite Corporation at 31 Waterloo Avenue, Berwyn, PA 19312; call 800-888-5483; or visit them at www.isolite.com. ❏

The Dangers of Cold Smoke | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | BY

firestop product, including; composite sheets, mortars, putty’s, pillows, blocks etc. All offering a specific level of protection for each installation, designed to adhere to the NFPA code to reestablish the fire rating of any penetration. Recently “pass through devices” have gained in popularity in the USA for the flexibility they provide. They allow for the quick and easy addition or subtraction of cables without the need to cut away or add material. Typically pass through devices are

Electrical Products & Solutions • November 2018
that is the lack of protection against the passage of “cold smoke” through the enclosure. “Cold smoke” is the smoke generated from a fire within a room far enough away from the direct source that it is not hot enough to activate the intumescent material but still hot enough to burn skin, spread airborne toxins or cause significant damage to the interior of a building. In Europe protection against cold smoke is taken seriously and the standard fire protection approvals such as EN 1366-2 include a minimum rating against cold smoke infiltration. Many of the popular pass-through devices on the market in the USA have failed to meet this rating level set by European countries for protection against cold smoke. This begs the obvious question of safety, why is it acceptable in the US when it is prohibited in Europe. I was recently at a trade show for electrical contractors who often have to deal with penetrations made for conduits and cable trays, I was asked this very question and this is my simple explanation. “Ease of install or retro fitting should never take president over safety. There are plenty of fire stop products like our PYRO Protect line that are both easy to install and protect against the cold smoke infiltration (meaning they have been tested and approved for use in Europe and by UL).” As a quick example of the danger of cold smoke, let’s assume there is a fire wall separating a control room or some other facility room from an office or hallway. A fire occurs in the facility room where PVC pipe is exposed. The PVC pipe begins to melt creating smoke that contains lethal toxins. This smoke is able to penetrate the passthrough device and enter the air in the hallway on the other side of the wall. Was the labor savings that device provided worth the risk? When selecting fire stop products consider protection from cold smoke and make a choice that protects the safety of people using the facility. Check the L rating of any and all fire stop products used. ❏

new PRODUCTS ABB Introduces High-Performance UL 1077 Supplementary Protectors, which Improve Short-Circuit Protection for Electrical Equipment ST200M miniature circuit breakers use a new design and tougher materials to provide the highest quality and reliability with reduced installation costs. ABB presents a new generation of miniature circuit breakers (MCBs) for electrical equipment that provides higher levels of strength, performance and savings, while remaining compliant with the UL 1077 standard. The new ST 200 M supplementary protectors are intended for use within industrial control panels, appliances and other equipment to protect against overcurrent where branch-circuit protection already has been provided or is not required. The ST 200 M series advances the capabilities of the previous S200 and S200P supplementary protectors from ABB, reducing the number of parts that users need to order and making it easier for distributors, OEMs and consumers to do business with ABB. The new supplementary protectors are built with a thermoplastic housing, replacing the often brittle thermoset plastic used in the S200 and S200P. Thermoplastic material significantly reduces the potential for transportation damages. Additionally, the ST 200 M offers a higher interrupt rating — up to 10 kA — than earlier versions. The voltage ratings of the ST 200 M are 480Y/277 VAC and 60/125 VDC, which eliminate the necessity of using two different product lines for AC and DC applications. The ST 200 M carries a short-circuit current classification of U2, which expands its range of applications. The ST 200 M features a red/green contact position indicator for increased safety by indicating the actual position of the contacts. Its calibration temperature of 104 degrees Fahrenheit (40 degrees Celsius) reduces derating in industrial control panels at higher ambient temperatures. For more information, visit www.abb.com

new PRODUCTS New Quick Setup Cable Certifier from IDEAL Networks To support fast and straightforward cable certification, IDEAL Networks has updated its LanTEK® III Cable Certifier with a new Quick Setup feature. Designed to support busy cable installers, the new Quick Setup mode on the latest version of the IDEAL Networks LanTEK III enables almost all configuration and testing to be performed on just one straightforward screen. Eliminating the need to navigate through different menus and options before starting to test or troubleshoot simplifies and speeds up the process for installers. “From speaking to our customers, we found that they were keen to get quicker access to information when certifying data cable and therefore developed the new Quick Setup mode,” explains Tim Widdershoven, Global Marketing Manager for IDEAL Networks. “As with all IDEAL Networks solutions, this latest development underwent considerable internal and external testing to ensure that it meets the needs of the user.” The LanTEK III cable certifier from IDEAL Networks is used to test the performance of cable and connectors in installed LAN cabling systems, and to ensure that components and cable meet relevant standards. In the new Quick Setup operational mode, the most commonly used functions appear on a single screen, making tester configuration faster and simpler. Details that can be updated from the Quick Setup screen include the user, customer, job, test standard and test name / number. The user can choose Quick Setup as the default operating mode, entering directly from the home screen at the touch of a button. However, for those installers who prefer it, Standard Setup is still an available operating mode. “This new, intuitive Quick Setup operation mode has been developed to improve our standard user interface and tester setup,” adds Tim. “We believe it will enhance the user experience for new and existing customers, making the day to day job of cable installers easier and more efficient.” For more information, visit www.idealnetworks.net

new PRODUCTS Milwaukee® Announces Its Fastest Drilling, Hardest Hitting SDS Max Rotary Hammer Unwavering in their dedication to delivering productivity-enhancing solutions that provide the right blend of power, run-time, and performance, Milwaukee Tool is proud to announce its fastest drilling and hardest hitting SDS Max rotary hammer yet. The M18 FUEL™ 1-3/4” Rotary Hammer w/ ONE-KEY™ generates the power of a 15amp corded hammer of the same size, features an electromagnetic clutch for maximum control and safety during use, and is capable of chipping a 1/2 ton of material per charge. Equipped with ONE-KEY™, users can also easily track, manage, and secure the rotary hammer through the ONE-KEY™ app on their mobile device. “Despite the growth of cordless rotary hammer solutions on the jobsite, there remain a wide array of larger capacity tasks that require the use of 1-3/4” rotary hammers. Unfortunately, because the larger cordless solutions available lack the capacity and speed needed for these applications, users continue to turn to their corded units,” said Kevin Gee, Senior Product Manager for Milwaukee Tool. “Due to the vast advantages of M18 FUEL™* cordless technology, we’re able to change all of that with the best performing rotary hammer in our company’s history, which not only boasts the benefits of no cords or generators but also drills faster than corded.” When equipped with Milwaukee’s new M18™ REDLITHIUM™ HIGH OUTPUT™ HD12.0 Battery, the rotary hammer can chip up to a ½ ton of material per charge, eliminating the hassle of cords while exceeding the performance of corded. The new HIGH OUTPUT™ HD12.0 Battery provides 50% more power, runs 50% cooler, and delivers 33% more run-time than the M18™ REDLITHIUM™ HD9.0 Battery. The new tool is also engineered with a proprietary AUTOSTOP™ electromagnetic clutch for the safest drilling and demolition experience. This clutch kicks in during lock up to prevent over rotation, minimizing potential rotation to only 45 degrees versus the typical 360 degrees of rotation users often experience with other hammers in this class.
