Time to Go Solar? By Richard Lawrence, Executive Director, NABCEP
A
ccording to the latest quarterly reports by the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) and GTM Research, the total cumulative installed photovoltaic (PV) systems in the United States are expected to top 10 GW of capacity at the close of 2013. The industry is on track to install enough solar to power over 850,000 homes in 2013. This represents a 30% growth in the market from last year’s figures, which, while substantially less than the 76% growth seen from 2011 to 2012, is still an impressive rate of growth in an otherwise turbulent economy. The average price of a solar electric panel has fallen 60% since early 2011, and the installed cost of a solar electric system is half of what it was in 2010. tunities all across the country. The top ten states for PV installations in Q2 2013 include Arizona in the Southwest; New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts in the Northeast; North Carolina in the Mid-Atlantic; Colorado in the Rockies; and Hawaii in the Pacific. Opportunities abound, particularly in regions with abundant sunshine in the Southwest and high electricity costs up and down the Eastern Seaboard. For the first time ever the industry is seeing signs of growth in markets that do not have strong state and/or utility subsidies for solar. Electricians and electrical contractors are needed on nearly every PV project. As the PV industry grows, so does the demand for skilled electrical workers. While a traditional education and career pathway in the electrical trades provides invaluable experience for working in solar, PV projects require specialized knowledge and skills that often necessitates additional training and with those economics. California is still where most of the ac- time to master. Getting started in PV is tion is, however, there are growing oppor- analogous to an experienced residential

contractor going to work as a lineworker for a utility. Many of the principals are the same, but the tools, theories, equipment, and practices are unfamiliar. Not only will you be dealing with high voltage DC that is always live during daylight hours, the system designs must take into account such things as the record low temperatures that have historically occurred in the location where the equipment is being installed because the voltage of PV modules increases with decreasing temperature. Safety factor calculations must take into account the possibility that more than “one sun” worth of sunlight might shine on a panel as light can be reflected from clouds, buildings, or snow. And, in addition to the electrical work, an experienced PV professional must understand, size, install, and maintain mechanical equipment needed to attach the modules to the roof or mount them on the ground. Novel situations arise even when installing seemingly simple components like disconnect switches – Continued on page 12

the PV system is installed on the load side of the service entrance, but it is a source of power, should the DC conductors from the panels be wired to the line side or the load side of the switch? What about the AC disconnect which has a source of power on both sides of the switch? Many electrical training institutions offer continuing education courses in solar, and more and more are incorporating the fundamentals of PV in the standard curriculum. Solar training is also available through local community and technical colleges and private training organizations. Those new to solar, whether veteran contractors or young apprentices, should start with a course that covers the fundamentals of solar technology. NABCEP has nearly three hundred educational institutions that are registered to deliver the NABCEP PV Entry Level Exam following a course based on the NABCEP PV Entry Level Learning Objectives. The learning objectives are designed to provide a fundamental understanding of the science, technology, and applications of PV, and a solid introduction to the design and installation of the electrical and mechanical components of a system. Those looking for a more advanced learning experience will likely need to seek out an organization that specializes in renewable energy education. As the solar industry has evolved, so have the training courses. Classes designed for people working on large commercial and utility scale projects are now available from some 12
providers, as are classes in operations and maintenance, off-grid systems, and PV technical sales. In addition to actual PV installation experience, advanced level PV training is required for anyone seeking NABCEP PV Installation Professional Certification. Certification provides customers, and potential employers or business partners, with verification from an independent third party that you have the knowledge and experience required to do the job correctly. Certified solar professionals must obtain continuing education to stay certified. Excellent training on industry best practices and new products and services are available from a growing list of equipment manufactures and training

organizations that are Registered NABCEP Continuing Education Providers. It’s a pretty sure bet that the sun will come up tomorrow - and with it the power to run our homes, schools, and business. Each new day brings more solar installations and more opportunities for electrical contractors to expand and diversify into this growing market. It’s now easier and more economical than ever for consumers to choose to go solar. Wise consumers choose contractors who not only have strong electrical credentials, but who have also demonstrated solar experience. The future is bright for those who take the time and effort to learn more about PV technology. ❏

Mitsubishi’s Megapod® Mitsubishi’s Megapod® integrates uninterruptible power supplies, batteries, and critical load cabinets into a single economical back-to-back layout that minimizes total system footprint and installation time. In 2013, Mitsubishi introduced the use of bus bar to replace the cabling previously used. The bus bar is located safely in between the two lineups of components and enables swift and effective connections, making external input and output lines the only necessary cabled connections on site. At the heart of the Megapod® is the 9900B, the industry’s most efficient true online double conversion UPS. Also noteworthy is the Megapod’s use of high-capacity front-terminal batteries, which reduces the quantity of batteries required. Less batteries means fewer batter cabinets, a smaller footprint, and a reduction in the cost of battery monitoring. Lastly, the Megapod’s modular architecture allows UPS units to be added or subtracted as multi-module configuration loads change. For more information, visit www.meppi.com

The BNT family of cable supports from Underground Devices meets power utility needs for a manhole cable support system that is nonmetallic and nonconductive. These cable supports are an ideal replacement to steel cable racks since they will not rust or corrode, eliminate the need for grounding the cable supports and make the use of insulators unnecessary. Additionally, BNT arms and stanchions have loading capacities comparable to similar heavy duty steel cable racks. Arm installation is safe and simple for the BNT family of cable supports. The arms are secured in place with nonmetallic pins, allowing for installation and removal of the arms without disturbing any cable. The BNT arms also mate with many existing steel stanchions, allowing for a gradual retrofit of existing manholes. For more information, visit www.udevices.com

Architectural Dimming System The Architectural Dimming System saves users money a number of ways. Most buildings’ lighting systems are over-designed to provide too many lumens (compared to actual need), but the Architectural Dimming System allows users to better control light settings and define a maximum level of lumens. By setting the maximum lumen level to 50%, a 40% energy savings can be realized. Additionally, the Architectural Dimming System’s scheduling presets allow users to create a schedule for when lighting turns on, off, or dims, saving additional money on a user’s energy bill and extending the life of the lamp and lighting equipment. Lastly, combining the Architectural Dimming System with occupancy sensors provides another level of savings, enabling the system to sense when lighting equipment should be turned on, off, or dimmed depending on room occupancy.
