Added Copper Improves Grounding, Subdues Thunderstorm Threats Upgrades to Facility’s Grounding System Secures Station’s 24/7 Operation By The Copper Development Association
The 1988-foot tower near Hinton, Iowa, operated by KPTH, is among the 50 tallest guyed masts in the continental U.S., making it an attractive target for lightning, especially in the thunderstormprone Midwest.
Many Americans still rely on the radio and television for news and entertainment. In particular, radio and television broadcasts are important to the residents of the rural, agricultural communities nestled between Iowa, South Dakota and Nebraska. This area of mostly prairie and farmland, roughly centered in Sioux City, Iowa, is served by KPTH and KMEG, and their network-affiliated television stations. Broadcasting from a single tower in Hinton, Iowa, these two stations have been providing important news and information to the people of the surrounding area for more than 44 years. Lightning damage to the outer "B" cable anchor from a June 2001 strike. The strike ejected 100-lb blocks of concrete several yards from the anchor after bypassing the existing high-resistance grounding system.
Original grounding connection at an outer anchor. High ground resistance and questionable connections enabled lightning to bypass this grounding system, causing damage to the anchor concrete, lower left. Note the zigzag path of the grounding conductor that reduced the system’s effectiveness.
Damage to the outer “A” anchor from October 2003 strike. This event led to an upgrade of the entire facility’s grounding and lightning protection system.
The 1988-foot tower is among the 50 tallest guyed towers in the United States. Reaching more than three-eighths of a mile high and surrounded by flat, rolling plains, the tower is especially susceptible to severe lightning strikes. According to the National Weather Service, this area receives on average over 50 thunderstorms annually, making the tower 8
a prime target for lightning damage. In the past, two particularly intense lightning strikes could have destroyed the broadcast tower completely. The first caused minor structural damage. The second strike, however, delivered a much more concentrated blow. It caused severe damage to two of the massive reinforced-concrete anchors, which

secured the cables keeping the tower upright. The anchors extend between 40 and 52 feet underground. Concerns over the tower collapsing, which would take the station off the air for several months while it was being repaired, led to an upgrade of the entire facility's grounding and lightning protection system. When evaluating the lightning damage, the grounding system was among the first components to be questioned. For answers, the owners turned to Computer Power & Consulting Corporation, an Omaha-based company with more than 30 years of experience with lightning protection, grounding and power quality issues. Martin Conroy, the company’s founder and president, was not surprised at what he discovered. “Based on the location and nature of the damage, along with what we saw in the tower’s construction plans and what we found in the field, we strongly suspected that the culprit here was an inadequate grounding system,” said Conroy. As part of the solution, Conroy added three 80-foot deep earth vertical electrodes at the tower, interconnected by a 250kcmil tinned-copper ring ground, and then ran three 250-kcmil radials from the ring to the tower base. All cable connections were made with tinned, solid-copper mechanical connectors. Dave Brender, the National Program Manager for the Copper Development Association (CDA), explained that copper’s excellent electrical conductivity and resistance to corrosion play an integral part in lightning protection applications. design of the grounding system is essential, and copper cable plays a key part,” said Brender. Gina Dierks is the broadcast IT engineer for the two stations. When asked about the new system, she said, “We haven’t had any problems with lightning damage since the new system was installed and we certainly haven’t been taken off the air, which means none of us has had to go to the tower in the middle of the night. That’s always a good thing!” For more information about this installation and all copper applications, please visit www.copper.org. ❏ About Copper Development Association The Copper Development Association is the information, education, market and technical development arm of the copper, brass and bronze industries in the USA. to different spaces throughout the facility, taking advantage of every opportunity to save energy while also considering occupant comfort and safety. Switching photosensors control compact fluorescent pendants in airy corridors on three floors adjacent to a central atrium and daylit office areas, and this lighting remains off most of the time. Designers layered control strategies in the building’s private and open offices. Low wattage direct/indirect lighting fixtures with T8 lamps and dimming ballasts include integral daylighting sensors that automatically adjust the output of the lamps based on the amount of daylight in each space. The daylighting controls are integrated with passive infrared (PIR) occupancy sensors, which are in turn integrated with HVAC Lighting and Controls controls for maximum efficiency. When Enermodal Engineering set out to build a state-of-the-art LEED Platinumcertified headquarters, the company’s design teams specified products they trusted, including WattStopper lighting controls. Enermodal, based in Kitchener, Ontario, is Canada’s largest green building consulting firm and has worked on 250 LEED projects across North America. Dubbed “A Grander View,” Enermodal’s striking 22,000 squarefoot Kitchener office building is the most energy-efficient in Canada. The bright, airy facility is a narrow building studded with windows and topped with skylights to maximize daylighting, views and natural ventilation. Planted with native species, the site overlooks the Grand River.

Enermodal wanted a
office lighting on to the level established by the daylighting sensors whenever the spaces are occupied. Each private office includes a switch for manual control that enables the occupant to turn the lights off. Most occupancy sensor time delays are set for 15 or 20 minutes. Heating and cooling, controlled via isolated relay contacts on the sensors, is scaled back when spaces are unoccupied. Low voltage PIR wall switch occupancy sensors control lighting in the building’s private restrooms, and auxiliary contacts control exhaust fans. Digital time switches in stairwells and mechanical rooms provide manual control, but also prevent lighting from being left on accidentally. Enermodal’s commissioning team programmed the on times for one hour and enabled a blink warning to signal an impending time out, allowing occupants to extend the on time if needed. The stairwell time switches are wired for three-way operation, so occupants can turn lighting on or off from each landing.
Selecting and Installing WattStopper Controls Enermodal electrical designers wanted a lighting control system that provided value and was simple to install and commission. They selected WattStopper sensors and controls based on positive experiences on other projects with both the products and the service team. The designers noted,
Electrical Products & Solutions • December 2011
“When we had questions about how to use the products, WattStopper representatives were always available to help.” Enermodal’s commissioning department worked with the electrician who installed the occupancy sensors and the HVAC controls installer to facilitate interconnecting the two systems. Following commissioning, the controls all operated as expected, and have required only minor adjustments including increasing the sensitivity in several areas. All of the occupants are now comfortable in their new offices.
Building Performance Enermodal President Stephen Carpenter says, “Our metered LPD is just 4.6W/m2 (0.43W/ft2). The calculations for LEED documented a power reduction of 33% below ASHRAE 90.1-2004. The occupancy sensor control allowance increased that reduction to 39.6%.” Overall energy use, tracked throughout the facility’s first year of operation, is 82% less than conventional office buildings in Canada. All of the building’s systems, from insulation and shading to heat recovery systems to water conservation measures, contribute to its impressive performance. A Grander View is expected to achieve the first triple LEED Platinum certification in North America; it is already LEED-NC- and -CIcertified, and is a candidate for LEED-EB: O&M certification. ❏

Clamp-on Power Meter
2011 TOP PRODUCTS
The Yokogawa CW10 Clamp-on Power Meter combines the basic functionality of a standard clamp on tester, digital multimeter, and power monitor to initially diagnose maintenance and electrical issues before more expensive and sophisticated equipment may be required to analyze the performance of motors, generators and other power related equipment. The CW10 allows technicians and maintenance personnel to measure 600 A AC/DC, 1000 V AC/DC, 600 kW AC/DC, power factor, total harmonic distortion, harmonics from 1st to 25th, resistance, and frequency. Other measurement and diagnostic capabilities include phase rotation, voltage detection, continuity check, diode test, inrush current and low pass filter. The CW10 possesses a rotary switch and joystick that allows the user to easily select the preferred measurement and diagnostic function. The CW10 meets CAT IV 600 V and CAT III 1000V safety standards and is CE rated. Standard accessories include 9V battery, test leads, soft case, and instruction manual. Cable Supports The BNT family of cable supports from Underground Devices meets power utility needs for a manhole cable support system that is nonmetallic and nonconductive. These cable supports are an ideal replacement to steel cable racks since they will not rust or corrode, eliminate the need for grounding the cable supports and make the use of insulators unnecessary. Additionally, BNT arms and stanchions have loading capacities comparable to similar heavy duty steel cable racks. Arm installation is safe and simple for the BNT family of cable supports. The
arms are secured in place with nonmetallic pins, allowing for installation and removal of the arms without disturbing any cable. The BNT arms also mate with many existing steel stanchions, allowing for a gradual retrofit of existing manholes. Due to the extreme strength and rigidity of the BNT stanchions, most installations require only two bolts to secure a stanchion to the manhole wall.
