Energy Lighting Solutions for Today’s Manufacturing and Warehouse Facilities

Energy consumption (Lighting) in today’s manufacturing and warehouse facilities is a significant portion of any company’s operating expense. This operating expense remains unchanged at many companies since it has been a constant with little attention paid by most facility managers, or COO administrators. The larger power consumption devices like HVAC, Generators, and Pumps are looked at when trying to reduce energy consumption within most manufacturing and warehouse facilities, but lighting which typically has the best rate of return, has not been often considered. However, this trend is changing with the introduction of several energy saving lighting solutions. They work well on motion detectors and photo cells providing even more energy saving options when utilized in a manufacturing or warehouse location. The main drawback when going with fluorescent lighting is the maintenance cost that can be associated with having to change out the individual bulbs as the product ages depending on the life hours of the installed bulbs. LED lighting solutions are another energy savings lighting making progress within the industry, but its current higher unit costs have prevented its growth in this area with other lighting solutions providing a better return on investment (ROI) with the same

energy cost savings at this time. LEDs do appear to be the future of lighting with their energy savings and solid state reliability, but until the volumes are increased and the costs to produce these units improves, other lighting solutions will remain better options in today’s current economy. An energy savings lighting solution starting to take hold in the market is induction lighting. Induction lighting is a form of fluorescent lighting with a magnetic field generating the electrical energy to power the bulbs. With the power being generated through the magnetic field instead of common cathodes found in a standard fluorescent, the failure mode is also removed giving this lamp a potential life span of 100,000 hours. This evolving technology can also reduce the energy consumption

of a standard metal halide or high pressure sodium by 40-50 percent while maintaining or improving the current light output levels. Because induction lighting is a fluorescent based technology it also can be utilized with any motion sensor or photo cell controls due to its instant on capability unlike the older MH and HPS bulbs which need time to cool down prior to restarting. An additional benefit that induction lighting has brought is the ability to replace higher wattages like 750W or 1000W MH and HPS fixtures with 400W or 500W units depending on the required light levels of each application. This higher output in the standard fluorescent tubes and LED products has yet to be achieved giving induction a leg up on the other options when considering these higher output fixtures. cost of re-lamping within your manufacturing or warehouse space along with a typical ten year warranty provided by most companies producing this style of lighting. The other lighting technologies will have a 30,000 to 50,000 hour life based upon it being T-8 or T-5 fluorescent, or LED unit with a 3 to 5 year warranty. Based upon the mentioned improvements in these energy savings lighting technologies there are certainly good options today to improve the power consumption and energy savings within any manufacturing or warehouse location. These lighting improvements should be evaluated thoroughly by all facility managers and contractors working with those facilities when servicing there locations. Most offer an ROI of two to three years and can be financed in many different ways thanks to the low ROI on the change out. Good rebates are also offered on these energy savings lighting solutions by most utility companies or state energy run corporations. ❏

Making a Lake House Even More Inviting

Renovating older homes with modern designs and conveniences often pose unique challenges for electrical contractors, as is evident in a recent project completed by Kleyn Electric. Kleyn, based in Grand Rapids, MI was hired to complete the electrical work on a beach home being renovated on Lake Michigan. Established in 1997, Kleyn Electric is a full-line electrical contractor. The company’s technicians pride themselves on being able to provide customers with the knowledge and experience for a first-class installation, regardless of the challenges of the project. The home’s owner, who resides in Chicago, uses the lakeside residence as a weekend and holiday getaway. The homeowner was interested in renovating the home to allow for a more open, modern floor plan that would highlight views of the lake throughout the beach home. The structure of the ranch style beach home needed a relatively dramatic makeover. Walls in the home would be completely removed, allowing for the open floor plan the homeowner was interested in achieving. In addition, the homeowner wanted to upgrade the technology available in the home for added comfort and convenience. In looking at the master bathroom, Steve Lotterman of Kleyn Electric and Ron Hainer, an experienced lighting designer from Crites, Tidey and Associates, needed to accommodate switches for eight light sources – a significant amount. The team decided that Leviton’s Vizia RF +® System would be an ideal fit for the project. Vizia RF + products give homeowners the ability to program and control lighting and select household devices with the touch of a button. The system does it all by replacing standard switches and dimmers with intelligent Vizia RF + devices. An ideal fit for retrofit projects, the system allows an installer to use wiring al14
ready in place in the home, making it easy to swap out systems. Similar systems would have required relay repeaters to boost the wireless signal from one receiver to another to ensure proper function of the system. This would add significant installation time and product cost to the project. With Vizia RF +, a 4-Button controller can replace a switch or dimmer to control

the local load as well as remotely control other Vizia RF + switches and dimmers throughout an area. The 4-Button controller can also assist in minimizing wall clutter. knows exactly what each button controls, avoiding the confusion of numerous, unidentified switches. Vizia RF + 4-button controllers allow installers to create lighting scenes or control zones/areas throughout the home. Plug-in modules also offer flexibility for adding table and standing lamps to an automated home. Vizia RF + can also be used for timed events, allowing a homeowner to schedule lights to turn on and off automatically at preset times to enhance security or enjoy a more convenient lifestyle. The system is a perfect fit for both retrofit projects and new construction. The team found that beyond solving many of the technical challenges of the room, the Leviton Vizia RF + system was also less expensive than many other solutions on the market. As the electrical planning process continued, the team found that the Vizia RF + system would be a fit for four other spaces in the home, including the master bedroom, an area with an office and recreation room, the living room, and landscape and porch lighting on the exterior of the home. “The system is unique in its ability to scale to exactly what is needed for a project. An installer can avoid the use of a dimming panel, adding one switch load at a time as needed,” said Hainer. “Vizia RF + is so easy to use it practically sells itself.” “We’ve used Leviton products in the past and have had a great experience with the ease of installation, the quality they provide for our customers, and the great working relationship we’ve been able to maintain with the company,” said Steve Lotterman of Kleyn. “The Vizia RF + system is a perfect solution for this project. It not only met the unique technical needs of the renovation, but worked well with the aesthetic goals that the homeowner and lighting designer were working to achieve.” Once the system was installed, programming it also proved to be relatively easy. The Vizia RF + system can be programmed manually through a remote or by using the Vizia RF + Installer Tool, software that allows an installer to create, back up, edit and test the system on any PC running Microsoft Windows®. The installer for this project chose to manually program the system, allowing them to complete the installation process relatively quickly. The installer completed a walkthrough of the renovated beach home late one evening with the designer to determine the areas and lighting scene levels, and was able to complete the programming process the next morning. Three remotes were included with the system, enabling the homeowner complete control of each room with the touch of a button. “We are thrilled with the entire renovation, the work of Kleyn, and Leviton’s Vizia RF + system,” said the homeowner. “The house is beautiful, and the fact that I can relax on the couch, look out at the stunning view we have now, and control many aspects of the home with the touch of a button is great. In addition, when we are not at the beach house, Vizia RF + provides added security by automatically turning lights on and off, giving the illusion that the house is occupied. Power Over Ethernet Becomes Part of the Job More and More Network Devices and Peripherals are Powered by PoE By Darrell Igelmund
Every device needs power and up to a couple of years ago, the power line always led to an AC outlet. That is changing fast as more and more computer and network devices take advantage of the new power scheme called Power over Ethernet (PoE)… putting the power on the same CAT5/6 cable as the data. The Advantages of PoE The advantages of PoE over traditional power sources are growing… and it won’t be long before a knowledge of PoE becomes part of the installation job. And, if the installation requires a functioning unit such as an operating VoIP phone of IP security camera, it will require that the Ethernet cable be connected to both an active data device (such as a switch) and a power source (PoE). The first big advantage of PoE is a device’s power source can be over 320’ away (the maximum length of an Ethernet run). And secondly, PoE eliminates the need to install a separate power cable, conduit and outlet (and the time that goes with it). It is no wonder that PoE is gaining a tremendous following and is now widely used to power VoIP phones, IP security cameras and network access points.
The Mix of Power and Data PoE sounds well and good until you realize that it mixes high power (48 volts up to 300ma or more) of PoE on the same cable that transmits high speed data between low voltage Ethernet computer cards, switches and other devices. The CAT5/6 cable can certainly handle it but it does give you reason to pause and pay extra attention to what you are doing. To help keep PoE safe, the IEEE has published standards with numerous provisions: One assures that the device providing the PoE will not provide the power until it sees an appropriate PoE load. But many of the PoE supplying devices in the market today seemingly fail to follow that standard directly. Some devices always have the 48V switched ON. Others seem to trigger with less than the required provocation. And others work very accurately, always waiting for the proper load.
How can I test for PoE during an install? Testing for PoE is more complicated than a AC/DC voltmeter check. To better understand the complication, a little background is required: An Ethernet cable is made up of 4 twisted pairs of wires. The 4 twisted pairs are terminated to connector pins 1/2, 18
3/6, 4/5 and 7/8. The PoE standard requires the 48VDC PoE utilize 2 pairs of the Ethernet cable (not a single pair as you might think). If a switch provides PoE power, it must use pairs 1/2 and 3/6 (this is termed “PoE endspan”). If a power injector provides the PoE power (at the patch panel), Continued on page 20

To be useful during installation time, a tester should be capable of detecting the presence of both an active data device and a power source for the device. One such tester is our own Network Power Panel. The Network Power Panel continually scans the CAT5/6 cable’s 8 pins

testing for active network devices and voltages (PoE included). Once spotted, one of the Power Panel’s 3 ultrabright LEDs alert you to the presence of either an active device or voltage. The Network Power Panel categorizes the device as either “Network”, “Phone” or “Power” (POE). If, by chance, all types of devices exist, then all the LEDs will light.
These ultrabright LEDs are the only indication that most users need that a data path and PoE is available for their device. But there is plenty more to learn from the Network Power Panel if you wish. For instance, the “Network” LED’s screen displays the speed capabilities of the device (10, 100, 100, HD, FD) and the cable pair(s) where the transmit pulses exist. The “Phone” device’s screen displays cable pair location and the voltage amplitude of up to 4 phones. And, the “Power” device’s screen displays PoE cable pair location; whether its “midspan” or “endspan” PoE; and the PoE voltage amplitude. And, if you are using the “inline” model of the Network Power Panel, insert it in between the device providing the power (eg PoE switch) and the device (eg VoIP phone) and measure the power consumption (watts) of the device. The power measurement capability is one of the most popular features of the Network Power Panel.
The Right Tool Saves Time Like any installation, the install of VoIP phones, IP cameras, access points and other PoE devices involve more troubleshooting than desired. The Network Power Panel is the perfect detective tool because it is designed to detect PoE; display its location on the cable; and display the amplitude of the signal. It additionally detects network devices (indicating 10, 100, 1000, HD, FD) and phones. Picture# 1 shows 48VDC of PoE on pairs 1/2 and 3/6 (“PoE endspan”). Picture# 2 shows the power draw of a recently installed VoIP phone (4 watts).
