What is Rotary

Rotary is a worldwide organization of more than 1.2 million business, professional, and community leaders. Members of Rotary clubs, known as Rotarians, provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world.

There are 33,000 Rotary clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas. Clubs are nonpolitical, nonreligious, and open to all cultures, races, and creeds.

วัตถุประสงคของโรตารี

February is significant for Rotary historical reasons. We observe Rotary’s 107th birthday on 23 February 2012 and remember the founding of the world’s first service club by lawyer Paul Harris and his three friends in downtown Chicago. Rotary is deeply rooted in the guiding principle of “Service Above Self,” fellowships without faith and racial boundaries, and adherence to the highest ethical standards in all occupations so that peace may prevail on earth.

I join you in extending our heartfelt congratulations to PP Surachat Chuenchoksan of RC Dhonburi and his spouse, Mrs. Wallapa, for his nomination as our 2014-15 district governor. We are very pleased to learn of the new international theme “Peace Through Service” by incoming RI President Sakuji Tanaka.

Last year’s massive flooding has forced postponement of numerous district programs and club activities. In 2012 we’ll embark on post-flood recovery projects to rehabilitate damaged primary schools with new teaching & learning kits. We have received very generous contributions worth more than 4.5 million baht from our friendly overseas districts, such as 3310 Malaysia & Singapore, 2820 Ibaraki Japan, 2660 Osaka, RC Mito-Minami of Ibaraki Prefecture, and many other clubs in Taiwan. Consolidated with our own donations of 1.5 million baht, we will be undertaking post-flood relief Matching Grant projects up to 10 million baht in value.

The Rotary Foundation has established Thailand Flood Relief Fund and invites contributions from Rotarians worldwide. We’re working on projects worth 38 million baht to help young students get back to their refurbished and reequipped classrooms with replaced school kits. Rotarians in their localities will be working hard on logistics management.

We have been granted PR Grants from RI for a total of USD21,000 (USD5,000 district fund + USD16,000 grant awards) to erect huge outdoor billboards in Bangkok, Ayuthaya, Lopburi, Nakhon Sawan, and Saraburi. Together with PR kits and leaflets, we will effectively enhance RI public image to the Thai public during RI Convention in Bangkok in May 2012.

My dear brothers ¾Õ蹌ͧªÒÇâõÒÃÕ·Ñé§ËÅÒ This November, I had the opportunity to speak at the Rotary institute in Kolkata, India. The focus of this institute was on peace and the ways in which we in Rotary could work to build peace.

When I received the invitation, I began to think about what I might say; knowing that with all that Rotarians do in this area, my main collage would be keeping within the time limit!

But just before I arrived in Kolkata, I spoke at a water conference on Tel Aviv. It was a wonderful even at which Rotarians and nonRotarians from all over the world come together to discuss the many challenges of keeping an ever-growing population supplied with an increasingly scarce resource. Before I could begin to talk about Rotary’s contribution, however, I had to explain what Rotary is and what we do – because even the very educated audience of scientists and entrepreneurs and executive, there were many people who had simply never heard of Rotary.

As I left that event, I began to think again about what to say in Kolkata, because so much of what we do in Rotary to build peace depends on public awareness of who we are. Why have we been so successful in our work to eradicate polio? Because Rotary is able to go where no government and few other nongovernmental organizations can – into homes, into schools, and into communities, with the trust and confidence of the people we serve.

When we in Rotary work for peace, we don’t do it by negotiating treaties or demonstrating in the street. Instead, we build peace by example - by working together, whatever our nationality or background, and putting other’s needs above our own. We build peace by dealing with the problems that disrupt people’s ability to live normal, peaceful lives – whether those problems are a lack of water, or sanitation, or safe affordable housing; whether they stem from shortage of

In everything we do, we rely on our good name.

This is why all of us have a responsibility to be sure that our good name is instead known. We need to not just work through Rotary, but talk about Rotary – letting the world know about the work we are doing, the differences we are making, and the benchmarks we are setting. Our Rotary work speaks to our belief that a better, more peaceful world is possible, and we need to be sure that our voices are heard.

Foundation Trustees Our Foundation helps us help others

ÁÙŹԸÔâõÒÃբͧàÃÒ ª‹ÇÂàÃÒãËŒª‹Ç¼ٌÍ×è¹µ‹Íä» A FRIEND who is an Arch C.Klumph Society member recently sent me an email ending with words that remind us of why we support our Foundation. John began life in humble circumstances and became a successful businessman. Through our Foundation, he has shared that success with people who have no ability to help themselves. He said: “As someone who born poor on a farm during the Depression, I can confirm that when you have nothing, a little bit goes along way to help. I remember like it was yesterday those neighbors and relatives who helped our family of nine and gave us support and encouragement. In essence, this is our Foundation mission.”

Another quote that impressed me recently came from a Rotarian at Rotary institute: “I joined Rotary for business and fellowship. I stayed to change the world.”

For many of us, Rotary is our only way to change the world.

As individuals, there is little we can do on our own, but when we join with our fellow Rotarians, we d make a difference.

How we do that depends on where we are. If you are in a country with great needs, then you will be involved in identifying the needs of people and developing and implementing projects that will change their lives. If you are one of this generation who has been blessed with success, then you can help by making resources available. Our Rotary Foundation, in a sense, sits in the middle and makes the connection.

Our business model works, which is why we will in a few years, celebrate 100 years of supporting Rotarians in making the world a better place. We have passed the test of time!

RI theme for year 2012-13 RI President-Elect Sukuji Tanaka unveiled 2012-13 RI theme “Peace through Service” during the 2012 RI International Assembly at San Diego, California, USA on 16th January 2012.

Presidential Citation award from RI President Presidential Citation award will consist of 2 types of donation to Rotary Foundation and 4 types of Membership activities. Any clubs that complete all criteria and are certified by the district governor before 6th April 2012 will be entitled to receive the citations.

Trophies for Rotary Clubs in District 3350 RI District 3350 will award 7 trophies to clubs with outstanding activities in various avenue of service because their members have devoted their time, effort and money to participate in community service, membership development, donation, co-operation with district and RI. To encourage their unselfish sacrifice, the award from RI district 3350 will be: 1. Outstanding New Generation program Awarded to the club that undertakes 3 excellent activities or more of youth service programs commencing from 1st July 2011 to 30th April 2012 2. Outstanding of 4 Comprehensive Services Awarded to the club that undertakes 4 or more excellent and comprehensive service activities commencing from 1st July 2011 to 30th April 2012 3. Highest Score of club Attendance awarded to the club with the highest average scores on weekly club meeting, calculating base on monthly figure, for the year commencing from 1st July 2011 to 30th April 2012.

4. Highest Net Members Increase awarded to the club with the highest increase in new members from 1st July 2011 to 30th April 2012.

Calculating by new members accepted deducts by members retired for the same period. To convert into a percentage increase is by dividing the net change in members by the outstanding number of members.

5. Highest District Conference Attendance awarded to the club with the highest number of Rotarians attending the District Conference, calculating the attendance as a percentage to total number of Rotarians in the club as of 1st January of each year.

6. Outstanding Service Activity awarded to the club with the most outstanding in one of the avenue of services in the year commencing from 1st July 2011 to 30th April 2012.

7. Higherst donation to Rotary Foundation awarded to the Rotary club with the most donation to the Rotary Foundation in PHF, EREY and Major Donor to the Annual Fund. Calculation base on total amount donated per member of the club as of 15th May 2012.

Dear Members : One of the programs that we, as the District’s Membership Committee, have planned but unable to do is conducting a seminar on the Strategic Approach to find new members. The demographic of metropolitan allows much flexibility for each new member to choose his or her own club to join with the suitable factors such as class, protocol, economy and an ease to get along with the existing members. One direct approach initiated and implemented by PDG.Somphop Sooksing with the assistant of PP.Vesed vessugunmanugul seems to work successfully well for the Club of Chatuchak which is now having 27 members from 12 during the past years. Their approach will be presented whenever an opportunity allows. Other suggested process can also be as easy as 1,2,3..First with your club brain storming, list all potential candidates, with address and contact persons in charge. Potential candidates must satisfy all qualification criteria of your club, such as friendliness, occupation, economy status, ease to approach etc..Send the candidates an invitation to join your club’s meeting with proper documents such as Rotary Basics, or A,B,C of the Rotary which are available at the Rotary Center. Some candidates may politely reply, some may not. keep trying. Once may not be enough. Most of the people who have passed the screening tests of your club will have a tendency to say yes..Good Luck..

Good morning.

It is a great honor to be here, standing before all of you: our new district governors for the 2012-13 Rotary year. Rotary has been at the center of my life for many years. I did not know it at the time, but the day I joined Rotary in 1975 was the day I set my first step on the path to a different future.

Before I joined Rotary, my view of the world was narrow. I was the fourth of eight children. We were poor, and so was nearly everyone we knew. I had never met anyone who was not Japanese.

Every week, I walked with my mother 20 kilometers to the market, to sell vegetables. This was as far as I went, and as much as I saw of the world beyond my village.

I dreamed of travel. I dreamed of seeing other cities, other countries.

I wondered what they were like. Since then, I have traveled a great deal. I have seen more of the world than I ever imagined. But nothing has broadened my vision as much as the perspective I have gained through Rotary.

Before I was a Rotarian, I saw only what was in front of me. I saw my business, my family, my customers, and my competitors.

When I traveled, I saw only what I knew to look at. But I did not see beyond that. I did not look for context. I did not look past what I believed was relevant to me.

One day, I was asked to join the Rotary Club of Yashio. And it was two years later that someone came and spoke to us about the idea of vocational service. From that day, slowly, I began to change. I realized that the purpose of my life was not just to earn more, to sell more, to make my business better than anyone else’s.

I realized that I wanted to have better goals and higher goals — both personally and professionally. I realized that for me, the most important thing in life was being useful to other people.

And I realized that by helping others, even in the simplest of ways, I could help to build peace.We hear the word peace every day.

We hear it in the news, we use it in conversation, and we talk about it a great deal in Rotary. But most of us spend very little time thinking about what peace is, and what that word means.

On its simplest level, peace can be defined by what it is not. It is a state of no war, no violence, and no fear. It means that you are not in danger of hunger or persecution or the suffering of poverty.

But we can also define peace by what it is, and by what it can be.

Peace can mean freedom of thought and of speech, freedom of opinion and of choice, and the ability for self- determination. It can mean security, confidence in the future: a life and home in a stable society.

On a more abstract level, peace can mean a sense of happiness, of inner serenity, of calm. The truth is that peace means different things to different people. No definition is right, and no definition is wrong. However we use the word, this is what peace means for us. And however we use the word, however we understand peace, Rotary can help us to achieve it. Rotary helps us to meet the basic needs of others: to provide health care, sanitation, food, and education when and where it is most needed. It helps to meet the inner needs as well, for friendship, connection, and caring.

And Rotary helps us to build peace in its most traditional sense, by reducing the causes of conflict. It builds bridges of friendship and tolerance among people and nations. It helps us to understand each other. Through our service, we learn that the problems that may seem large to us are really very small. We learn empathy for others. We come closer to people who seem very different from us. And we begin to understand how alike we really are.

Through our Rotary service, we learn that cooperation is more productive than conflict. We learn to value each other, as human beings with human strengths and weaknesses. We learn that every one of us has something to give, and every one has something to teach. To me, Service Above Self is more than just a motto.

It is a way of life — one that will make any life richer and more meaningful. Putting Service Above Self allows us to focus our energies on what is truly important. We put the common good above our own. We prioritize others’ needs over our own desires.

We think less about ourselves and more about what is best for everyone. And in this way, we help to build the foundation for a more peaceful world.

This is why, in 2012-13, our Rotary theme will be Peace Through Service. Because however we define peace, whatever peace means to us, we can bring it closer through service.

by Kasemchai Nitiwanakun Bangkok Convention Promotion Chair, D-3350 Bangkok will host the 9th Asia Pacific Regional Rotaract Conference “Reflect to Create, and (APRRC 2012) on April 30-May 3, 2012 at Amari Donmuang Serve with Joy” Hotel prior to the 103rd RI Convention in the capital.

The APRRC 2012 Theme Rotaractors from Asia Pacific region and other distant geographical areas (as far as USA) will not only connect with the global network of lasting friendships, engagement, and youth action, but are also offered a rare and convenient opportunity to participate in the ensuing 2012 Rotaract Preconvention (May 4-5) and RI Bangkok Convention (May 6-9).

This annual international event will present the annual Rotaract leadership conference, international cultural shows by delegates of each Asia Pacific country present, and project showcase bazaars, according to PDG Chairat Prasertlam, Chairperson of APRRC Promotion Committee. “An added benefit is Thai Rotaractors will earn a valuable experience in organizing an international event.”

According to APRRC 2012 co-Chairpersons, Rotaractor Veerakulchai Samnaoklang & Patchaya Theeudomvattanakul, APRRC 2012 will feature a cultural tour to highlight and experience the rich traditions of Thailand at Rose Garden Riverside, Sampran, Nakorn Pathom. A community service project is being planned for Rotaract delegates.

At the 2012 Rotaract Preconvention Meeting on May 4-5 at IMPACT Convention Centre in Bangkok, Rotaractors and Rotarians will mingle to exchange ideas, hear from keynote speakers (various RI leaders), and recognize Outstanding Rotaract Project winners of the year.

The Rotaract Preconvention Meeting is included in the registration fee for the RI Convention. Rotaractors who register from now to March 1 will pay US$75. Those who register onsite will pay US$100. Alternately, individuals can register for the Rotaract Preconvention Meeting as a stand-alone meeting for US$50.

Celebrate Rotary Awareness Month by training members on Rotary history, programs, or how to raise awareness of your club’s projects among your community. Or, ask members to share a personal story or experience that they have had because of Rotary. Every Rotarian has a Rotary story that can be educatonal and inspiring. The beginning of a new year is a good opportunity to renew inspiraton for the rest of the Rotary year.

There are so many things happened during the first half of this year, flood that our district and our Rotarians had suffered.

As a result of the inundation in the past 3 months, the actvities of RI district 3350 were affected by cancellation or delay. Many Rotary Clubs in the flooded areas cancelled their regular meetng. Even though there has been hardship for many Rotarians, their spirit of service above self is intact; many Rotarians contnue their services of relief efforts for flood victms led by the chairperson PDG.Suchada Ithijarukul.

RI District 3350 in cooperation with the government, private sectors, the army, the navy, businessmen and the support from district 3330, 3340 and 3360 jointly delivered life-saving bags, rice, dried food, clean drinking water, water-purifiers, mobile toilets, mosquito nets, tents and ready-made food to urgently alleviate the grievance of people affected.

ROTARY FIGURES

Furthermore, The Rotary Foundation has established the Rotary Thailand Disaster Relief and Recovery Fund, which will support relief and recovery projects in the affected areas. Rotary Clubs around the world have shown their concern by contributing money in support of the Fund. All Rotary Clubs in the affected areas should survey the needs of those communities and propose projects to District for urgent consideration.

The reparation works such as for schools, toilets, canteens, libraries, painting of school, seats, desks, school equipment and Rotary water purifiers are recommended.

We had Rotary Institute at Bali, Indonesia and we had been well sharing of Rotary knowledge and learning from various speakers and work shop and next year The Institute from our Zone will be held in Selangor, Malaysia.

Host event tickets may only be purchased by convention registrants for themselves, their registered convention guests, and members of their immediate families. Ticket requests will be processed in the order in which they are received, until the event reaches capacity. Host event tickets are transferable.

2. Host event tickets may be purchased online until Friday, 27 April 2012. After that, tickets may be sold on-site at the Host Events Ticket Booth, based on availability, 3-8 May 2012.

3. All host event tickets will be confirmed in the order in which they are received. Upon receipt of payment, e-tickets will be provided to each participant via e-mail.

4. You may cancel your ticket order to any host event up to Friday, 6 April 2012 (please remember, tickets are transferable). เรียน ท‡านสมาชิกสโมสรโรตารี ขอเชิญร‡วมงานประชุมโรตารีสากล (Rotary International Convention) ของเราชาวโรตารี ที่จะจัด ขึ้นเป็นครั้งที่ 103 ในวันที่ 6 - 9 พฤษภาคม ปี 2555 ที่กรุงเทพฯ ซึ่งจะเป็นเหตุการณที่น‡าตื่นเตนมาก ที่สุดเหตุการณหนึ่งในโลก ประเทศไทยเป็นสถานที่ๆ มีความงดงามอย‡างแทจริงที่หนึ่งที่รูจักกันในชื่อของ ดินแดนแห‡ง 1,000 รอยยิ้ม ผมจึงอยากจะขอเชิญชวนทุกท‡าน โดยเฉพาะอย‡างยิ่งชาวโรตารีที่ไม‡เคยไปเที่ยวเอเชียมาก‡อน ไดใชโอกาสนี้ เดินทางมาร‡วมงานดวย กรุงเทพฯ เป็นประตูทางผ‡านสำ�หรับผูที่ตองการจะเดินทางระยะสั้นๆ ไปสู‡ประเทศ ต‡างๆ ในกลุ‡มเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใตเพื่อการท‡องเที่ยว รับประทานอาหาร ชอปปิ้ง เที่ยวชมสถานที่ทาง วัฒนธรรมที่สำ�คัญ สำ�หรับผูที่เคยไปมาแลว คุณก็คงรูสึกว‡าอยากจะกลับไปเยี่ยมชมกรุงเทพฯ อีกครั้งเป็น อย‡างมากแน‡นอน แต‡เหตุผลสำ�คัญที่สุดที่พวกเราจะไปกรุงเทพฯ กันก็คงจะหนีไม‡พนงานประชุมโรตารีสากล ซึ่งเป็นงานใหญ‡ ของชาวโรตารีเราที่ทุกคนไม‡ควรพลาด ในปีที่ผ‡านๆ มา พวกเราไดพบปะกับชาวโรตารีทั่วโลกในที่ประชุมแต‡ละแห‡ง เรามีโอกาสไดพบปะกับผูคน ต‡างๆ ในสถานที่เดียวกัน ไดยินภาษาพูดของหลายๆ ประเทศ พูดคุยกับผูคนมากมาย และรับรูโครงการ ของปีที่ผ‡านมา ไม‡มีประสบการณใดในการประชุมของโรตารีที่จะดีไปกว‡าการประชุมโรตารีสากล ไม‡มีอะไร อื่นที่จะสรางแรงบันดาลใจไดมากเช‡นนี้อีกแลว ในทุกปี กระผมไปร‡วมการประชุมโรตารีสากลดวยความตื่นเตนที่จะไดเห็นเพื่อนเก‡าและรูจักกับเพื่อนใหม‡ ๆ เพื่อฉลองความสำ�เร็จของเราและเรียนรูจากประสบการณระหว‡างเรา และทุกๆ ปี ผมก็กลับมาดวยความรูสึก ที่ภาคภูมิใจในโรตารีที่เต็มไปดวยความกระตือรือรนและมุ‡งมั่นที่จะรับใชโรตารีของเราต‡อไป ปีนี้จะเป็นการประชุมที่ดีที่สุดเท‡าที่เคยมีมา กระผมอยากใหคุณรีบลงทะเบียนตั้งแต‡ตอนนี้และเริ่มตนวางแผน การเดินทางไปร‡วมการประชุมนานาชาติครั้งที่ 103 ของโรตารี ที่กรุงเทพฯ ขอแสดงความนับถือ

Dear Rotarian: Please accept my personal invitation to join me and our fellow Rotarians in Bangkok, Thailand, 6-9 May 2012, for the 103rd Rotary International Convention — an incredible event in one of the world’s most fascinating cities.

Thailand is a spectacular destination, truly the Land of a Thousand Smiles. I would particularly urge Rotarians who have never visited Asia before to consider this your chance.

Bangkok is a fantastic gateway to explore Southeast Asia and a wonderful experience on its own for a shorter trip. For those who hail from countries closer by, take the opportunity for a great getaway — with all the dining, shopping, and sightseeing opportunities of a major cultural capital. Indeed, for those who have been there already, you know that you can never get enough of Bangkok.

But the best reason to visit Bangkok, of course, will be the Rotary convention itself: the highlight of the Rotary calendar and an opportunity not to be missed.

All through the year, we reach out to Rotary communities across the globe. At the convention, we have the chance to see all those communities represented in one place — to hear all the languages, see all the people, and learn about all the projects of the past year. Nothing brings home the internationality of Rotary like a Rotary convention, and nothing else has the same power to inspire.

Every year, I go to the RI Convention excited to see old friends and make new ones, to celebrate our successes and learn from our experience. And every year, I leave with a sense of pride in Rotary, eager to continue my commitment to Rotary.

This year promises to be the best convention yet. I urge you to register now and to begin planning for our 103rd Rotary International Convention in Bangkok!

Discovering Thai culture

The cultural splendors of Bangkok Bangkok is an ideal host city for a Rotary International Convention. Known as the City of Angels, Thailand’s vibrant capital attracts millions of international visitors annually, who are drawn to its rich cultural heritage, delectable cuisine, and unsurpassed hospitality. Join thousands of fellow Rotarians in Bangkok to celebrate the international accomplishments of the 2011-12 Rotary year.

New adventures and experiences await you in Bangkok. A cultural and business center of Southeast Asia, Bangkok is a study in contrasts. Modern hotels, restaurants, and banks stand next to ancient shrines and sacred temples. Busy marketplaces — some on water — bustle with activity while Buddhist temples offer a moment to reflect in quiet reverence.

In the evening, enjoy a relaxing meal on the Chao Phraya River or watch an exciting kickboxing match while sipping cold Thai beer. Whatever your inclination, Bangkok will leave an impression and memories to take back home and share with your club.

Thailand is a constitutional monarchy.

His Royal Highness King Bumiphol Adulyadej, the world’s longest reigning head-of-state, is greatly revered and respected by the Thai nation. Negative commentary about the king or the monarchy is a social taboo.

The Floating Markets

Wat Phra Kaew and the Grand Palace The Temple of the Emerald Buddha is considered the most important temple in Thailand and the spiritual home of Thai Buddhism. With its shining spires and a Buddha image carved out of a single block of jade, Wat Phra Kaew is a must-see among several stunning wats in Bangkok.

Adjoining the temple is the former residence of the royal family, the Grand Palace. Tour the grounds for stunning architecture and a glimpse of the culture of Thailand’s monarchy.

Floating markets, such as Damnoen Saduak, have become the symbol of Bangkok. Although they now cater mostly to tourists, floating markets provide a glimpse of how the city uses waterways to deliver food and other products to residents. From your vantage point on the canal sidewalk, you’ll also find goods such as traditional straw hats, coconuts, and sweets available from merchants floating by in narrow boats.

The delights of Thai food

Bangkok provides countless culinary choices. Food is deeply engrained in the culture, and a common way to say hello in Thai is “Have you eaten rice yet?” Thai cuisine is renowned for its delectable use of fresh ingredients, herbs, and spices.

Snack on chicken satay or fresh coconut water from a street vendor, dine in a converted teak house at Ruen Mallika, or enjoy the city vistas from the rooftop restaurant Moon Bar at Vertigo.

Nightlife, arts, and entertainment Whether you raise a toast and view the lights of Bangkok from one of the city’s many rooftop bars or sip wine over quiet conversation at a local inn, there are many opportunities to unwind after a day at the convention. Music aficionados can enjoy live performances of pop, jazz, and blues in area clubs. Considered the art capital of Southeast Asia, Bangkok also boasts several galleries that are open until the early evening hours for your browsing pleasure. For an unforgettable evening of traditional art, don’t miss the Thai masked dance drama at Sala Chalermkrung.

Shopping There is something for every type of shopper in Bangkok, from bargaining with street vendors to browsing luxurious boutiques. Visit one of the 150,000 stalls in Chatuchak Weekend Market on a quest for the best deals in clothing, gadgets, crafts, and almost anything else. If modern shopping centers are more your speed, head to one of Bangkok’s air-conditioned Mahboonkrong, often referred to as MBK, for jewelry, fashion, and electronics. In the city center, Bangkok’s chic crowd shops at Erawan Bangkok for designer fashions before heading to a tearoom to enjoy the view overlooking the Erawan Shrine.

Thailand’s monarchy

Family fun Bangkok offers activities for the entire family, including water parks such as Siam City and Dream World. For an up close experience of Thailand wildlife, take a short cab ride just outside the city and visit the Samphran Elephant Ground and Zoo. Reptile enthusiasts may enjoy a visit to the Samut Prakan Crocodile Farm and Zoo.

Thailand’s great temples Buddhism has been practiced here for centuries and more than 90 percent of Thais are Buddhists. Offering more than just views of stunning architectural wonders and beautiful relics, Buddhist temples, or wats, are a window into the spiritual heart of the country where nonBuddhists are welcome to visit. When entering a wat, dress respectfully (no shorts, sleeveless shirts, or skirts above the knee) and remove your shoes.

Don’t miss these Bangkok temples: Wat Arun The Temple of the Dawn, facing the river, is known for offering sublime views at dawn and sunset.

Wat Pho Adjacent to the Grand Palace, Thailand’s oldest temple is home to a giant reclining Buddha statue.

Renowned for its beautiful rooflines, this wat features colorful murals depicting the life of the Buddha.

Place the palms of your hands together in front of your chest and bow your head gently until your nose is level with your tallest fingers, keeping your elbows tucked to your side. Traditionally, Thais wai each other based on social structure. For example, children always wai an elder first.

It is polite to return or acknowledge a wai.

Rotary in Thailand RI President Bhichai Rattakul (2002-03) was the first Rotarian from the country to lead RI. Other Rotary leaders from Thailand include Past RI Director Noraseth Pathmanand, who serves as the Host Organization Committee chair for the convention, among other positions. Past District Governor Saowalak Rattanavich has helped expand concentrated language encounter (CLE), a literacy method first developed by Rotarians, to more than 30 countries using Thai universities as a training base.

Impact Exhibition & Convention Center 99 Popular Road, Banmai Subdistrict, Pakkred District, Nonthaburi 11120, Thailand The Impact Center, one of Asia’s largest convention centers, will be the main site for all plenary sessions, the House of Friendship, booth exhibits, and most RI-related official meetings. Located approximately 30 minutes from Bangkok’s city center, the convention center offers modern amenities such as the Royal Jubilee Ballroom, where special luncheon events will be held.

During five plenary sessions, you’ll be inspired by the RI president and other leaders, who will share success stories that highlight how fellow Rotarians are setting examples of Service Above Self globally.

The Rotary Foundation will also present the latest news about club and district efforts in polio eradication. Guest speakers and lively entertainment will round out the plenary sessions. Simultaneous interpretation will be offered in English, French, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Portuguese, Spanish, and Thai. Breakout sessions Held on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday afternoons, breakout sessions offer an excellent chance for Rotarians to share best practices and project ideas. Make the most of your club experience by participating in sessions ranging from literacy projects around the world to public relations grant information.

House of Friendship Meet and mingle with fellow Rotarians while sampling Thai food in the House of Friendship. While there, you can visit service project booths, learn about fellowships, and check out the latest Rotary publications. There will also be a chance to buy souvenirs, check e-mail at an Internet café, and register for next year’s convention.

Peace symposium The third Rotary Peace Symposium will offer an opportunity for current and former Rotary Peace Fellows, Rotarians, and friends to discuss ways in which RI and the Foundation work to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through diverse initiatives. The meeting will spotlight the work of the six Rotary Peace Centers, including the center at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok.

Electronic badges to facilitate access New electronic badges will allow attendees easy access to all RI events for which they have registered.

At the 2012 RI Convention • N etworking opportunities. Looking for an international partner for your service project or Matching Grant?

The RI Convention offers an ideal opportunity to network in person with fellow Rotarians who have similar goals and a commitment to Service Above Self. Visit the Projects Exhibition to view Rotary projects and gather ideas.

• F ellowship and groups. Every RI Convention features several Rotary Fellowships and Rotarian Action Groups, and this year will be no exception. Browse these booths and get involved in an international group, based on hobbies, profession, or service interests.

• M ake new friends. At a Rotary convention, you will have an opportunity to meet like-minded individuals from every continent.

Many Rotarians also use the convention as a chance to see old friends. Your district or region could even sponsor its own event, such as a meeting, breakfast, or luncheon (see “Expand your horizons” opposite).

Getting around town Bangkok’s residents use a wide variety of options to navigate the city, including a modern underground railway line, the MRT, as well as the BTS Skytrain and an elevated line running from the airport to the new City Air Terminal in the city center, operating daily. Taxis abound, offering a cool, clean ride. However, travelers should be prepared for delays in traffic; in a city of 16 million, traffic jams are hard to avoid. Bangkokians have invented some ways to beat the traffic, including river ferries, which are inexpensive, run frequently, and offer a great way to experience the city. A short ride in a túk-túk or motorized rickshaw can also be fun, especially at night when traffic is lighter.

1. Register early Take advantage of special preconvention pricing by registering early. Don’t delay: The early registration deadline is Thursday, 1 December 2011.

2. Apply early for visa Do you need a visa to enter Thailand? Upon registration, RI automatically sends a letter of invitation to those who are residents of countries requiring a visa. RI processes all forms on a first-come, first-served basis, so please register early and apply for your visa well in advance to allow adequate time to complete the visa application process. To check if you need to have a visa to enter Thailand and to get related information, visit www.mfa.go.th.

3. Sign up for first-timer orientation

Make the most out of your visit to Southeast Asia by planning a vacation before or after the convention. The cultural heritage and experiences within Bangkok offer only a glimpse of Thailand's splendors. Bangkok’s central location makes it an ideal base for exploring beautiful island beaches, World Heritage sites, and national parks.

Thailand’s beaches To the south, Thailand’s beaches and coastal resorts offer stunning natural beauty and an unparalleled opportunity to relax. The beach resort town of Pattaya, in the Gulf of Thailand, is only about two hours from Bangkok. To the southwest, head to Ko Chang and enjoy the white sand beaches of Had Sai Khao. In the extreme southern tip of Thailand, visit Phuket for world-class resorts or Phang Nga Bay for snorkeling and coral reefs. On Khao Phing Kan island, explore marine parks and enjoy the bay views of Ko Tapu, an islet jutting out of the sea.

Isan

Northern Thailand’s largest city, Chiang Mai, sits at the foot of the Himalayas. For a scenic adventure, trek in surrounding parks and countryside. There, you can view waterfalls, ride on an elephant, or take a trip on a whitewater raft. Enjoy the region’s unique culture and delicious cuisine, and shop for silk products and handicrafts of the indigenous hill peoples of the region.

Chiang Mai also features many ancient temples to explore and golf courses to play.

Visit the northeast region of the country, Isan, to experience rural Thailand and local Laos and Khmer cultures. The Khmer temple at Phanom Rung dates to the 10th century, while the wat at Khon Kaen is situated on a lake, offering spectacular views. Isan’s natural scenery can be enjoyed during a hike in the Phu Phan National Park or on a boat ride down the Mekong River along the Laos border.

Discovering Thai culture Thai etiquette According to Thai culture, the head is considered to be the residing place of the soul. Touching or reaching over another’s head is considered highly offensive. On the other hand, feet, being farthest from the head, are considered dirty and foul. Visitors should be mindful not to prop feet up on desks or show the bottom of their feet while crossing legs. Be prepared to remove shoes when entering a home.

Gateway to Southeast Asia A major hub in Southeast Asia, Bangkok can serve as your base to extend your trip to regional attractions such as the stunning temple of Angkor Wat in Cambodia or the bustling cities of Singapore, Hong Kong, or Kuala Lumpur. There are daily flights to major regional destinations from Bangkok.
