December : Month of Disease Prevention & Treatment CP.Auyporn Boontako

The saying “Living Without Disease is the Greatest Fortune” is undoubtedly a very true statement. No one wants to get sick; because when one does, one cannot feel at ease. This unhappiness does not only happen to those who are ill, but also their families, relatives and friends. Besides, time and money are also costed in curing one’s health to normal state or in good health. Since sickness and illness are not desired, we must avoid them by preventing them from happening. Disease prevention is an act of doing or not doing certain actions to prevent one’s health from being affected by diseases, which includes preventing from an illness that was cured. Levels and kinds of disease prevention, based on the definition given above, can be categorized into 3 levels: 1. Prevention before the occurrence of disease or illness is an act of doing or not doing certain actions to prevent one’s health from having any disease or illness such as maintain healthy at all time or apply vaccines to prevent diseases like Dengue or Measles. 2. Prevention during the occurrence of disease or illness is an act of doing or not doing certain actions to prevent the occurring disease or illness from getting worse or to gain fast recovery such as strictly taking medications according to doctor’s prescriptions. 3. Prevention after the occurrence of disease or illness is an act of doing or not doing certain actions to prevent one’s health from being ill due to the cured disease or illness in the future. Kinds of disease prevention can be categorized into 2 main kinds: 1. Self Prevention is being aware of own behaviors when doing or not doing certain actions to prevent one’s health as well as others’ health from having any disease or illness. 2. Prevention of disease or illness expansion in the communities – this can be done by creating awareness of the importance of maintaining healthy in the community Disease prevention at the individual level can be done as the following: 1. Remain healthy by regular exercises, eat enough nutritious food, gain enough sleep and avoid smoking. 2. Wash your hands with soap and always keep clean. Use ‘middle spoon’ when eat with others. 3. Avoid traveling to countries or areas where diseases are being speaded. 4. If it is unavoidable to travel to countries or areas where diseases are spreaded, one should go through disease screening process. To cure diseases or illnesses means • To cure disease or be free from illnesses • To control disese from spreading or worsen one’s health. • To reduce the severity of disease or illness as well as painful effects (both short-term and long-term) Process to be done before curing diseases or illnesses • Patient’s medical and illness history interview • Health Check-Up • Special required Check-Up • Disease Evaluation • Start curing, including providing medication

If we were to compare diseases with monsters we want to fight with or kill, medicines can be considered as weapons we use to terminate monsters. In this fight, if we want to win, we must know the following: • We must know what the monster called (by questioning and interview process, regular and special check-up). • We must know what weapons the monster are afraid of (the illness should be cured by what kind of medicines). • We must know the weapons and how to use them (knowing the effects of the medicines – good and bad). All knowledge is collected by Disease Prevention and Treatment Subcommittee and also from Public Health Office. The subcommittee has the following members: 1. AG.Pongsak Tatsanaviriyaporn – Cataract 2. PP.Yuttmetakorn Apichirapokey – Dialysis Machines 3. PP.Achara Pandaeng – Oral Cavity 4. PP.Dr.Vichai Vijitpornkul – Trigger Fingers 5. PP.Dr.Chanida Kanchanalarp – Ear, Neck, Nose 6. PP.Fl.Lt.Saisawat Rojanaprasertkij,MD – Cancer 7. PP.Layead Sukramoongkol – Subcommittee Member All RI project directions concern with human quality that match with the uniqueness of each Rotary club’s service projects and the needs of communities. The Subcommittee and I would like to express our admiration to all clubs. (ÀÒ³Ø ÂÈàÁ¸Ò á»Å)

The role of District Internal PR Subcommittee is to be a center in assisting all Rotary clubs in the District to publicize news and events for both between District and clubs, and between clubs. This is why we have District E-News released every week to be a tool in spreading news to all. This year, the Subcommittee Chair also has another role as District E-News Editor. Mention about District E-News, there were already over 20 to almost 30 E-News issued for over the past 5 months. I would like to take this opportunity to everyone and every club for your cooperation and see the value of District E-News by submitting in news and events every week, both District and Clubs’ News. Without these details and updates, District E-News would be incomplete and useless.

Moreover, one thing that makes E-News this year differ from previous years is the Rotary Knowledge and Special Articles section. An article each week will relates to Rotary International’s focus for that particular month – for example, November is Rotary Foundation Month, so articles would be about the Rotary Foundation. I believe that apart from news, readers should get useful knowledge too; and that would be something very useful. I truly thank all honoured article writers for sacrificing their time writing articles to be published in different issues of District E-News. I am much appreciated.

Governor Chaivai has set the membership goal at 10% or 270 for D3350 and will urge all clubs to continue your good work in achieving this target. We have another 4% (112) to go and I am confident that all of us can achieve this, as 112 will be my luckily number. Recruitment is very easy. What you have to do is “Just Ask”. There are also many clubs in our district asked me whether “Is our district concentrating on Quantities or Qualities? My answer is very simple, I will prefer to have both (Quantity & Quality).

Please be reminded to adopt the concept that our district has recommended, that is “One Rotarian Reach / Find One and Keep One”, as I believe that all of us have at least 1 to 2 friends and we can always approach and convince them to be part of our Rotary family. We have to “Let the Target Touch”, in order to convince them to be part of us. Please invite them to join your community service project or social fun activities, whenever possible. Recruitment may be easy, but after we have successfully recruited them, our next challenge is how to retain them. I will like to remind all clubs to conduct new members’ orientation program for all your new members and assigned a mentor to each new members. This will definitely help to retain them. Please also remember to “Listen, Understand & Act” upon all their questions or doubts. In the event, that you are unable to answer their queries, please do not hesitate to contact the District Membership Development Team. We are your resource person and are more than willing to help you. You are also urge to get your members involved & engaged, as the number one (1) reason for members leaving Rotary is “Lack of Engagement”. Give them a good “Customer Experience”, which will definitely create loyal advocate. As we Love, we Care; when we Care, we Share & “Together Everyone Accomplishes More” and finally we will “Be a Gift to the World”. DGE Jason Lim District Membership Development Chair

Congratulations to all Club Presidents & Club Membership Development Chairs in D3350 RI. Most of you have done a wonderful job in increasing the membership of your clubs. I have checked the latest figures being reported to RI, our district membership stands at 2,856 as at 30 November 2015, as compared to 2,698 as at 1 July 2015. That means that our district has an increase in Membership of 158 Rotarians or 6% for the past 4 months. I am quite sure that some of the clubs in our district may have increased their membership, but have yet to update their data in My Rotary, as such, I will urge all clubs to update their membership data within 30 days from the days of induction or termination.

2015 Manila Rotary Institute , Zones 6B / 7A / 10B 6 - 8 November 2015 At Sofitel Philippine Plaza , Manila , Philippines

Bangkok Rotary Institute 2016 ศิรชัย สิมะสกุล

(ตอนที่ 1)

ประธานคณะกรรมการบรการระหว างประเทศ Fellow Rotarians, Last month , November 5-8, I have a chance to visit Manila, Philippines to participate the Manila Rotary Institute of Zone 6B (10 Districts), Zone 7A (12 Districts) and Zone 10B (8 Districts), altogether 30 Districts. The name of the Seminar sounded as if we are going to attend an Institute to learn the subject on Rotary. In fact, if we look into the detail, it was really an Institute, because all the programs concontrated on the Rotary details. The Seminar was divided into 3 parts. November 3-5 was the training of District Governor Elect from all Districts. The training called GETs, it sounded like PETs which is the training of Club President Elect. November 5 was the training of District Governor Nominee. The morning session on November 6 is the seminar on Rotary Foundation. All these 3 seminars were called Pre Institute Seminar. Moreover, the Pre Institute also covered the seminar of all District Trainers as well as the COL Deligates (Council on Legislation) seminar, which will discuss on the preparation for the real conference that will take place on early next year. In the afternoon of November 6, it was the Grand Opening of the Institute. The details of the conference were the reporting of the Rotary performance by RI President Nominee, RI Directors, RI Past Directors. The morning and afternoon session on November 7 and 8 were the reporting and followed by the Breakout Sessions, which had a lot of interesting Topics. There were about 1,200 participants from 30 different Districts, but Rotarians from Taiwan was the largest group of about 450 participants. The detail of the seminar including the interesting topics will be reported in the next issue. You may feel confuse with the headline which mentioned about Bangkok Institute, but the whole article didn't mention anything about it. I am not wrong, I will go into details next issue. Please don' t forget to follow up.

Concept of Sustainable Service Project By PP. Fl.Lt. SaisawatRojanaprasertkij, Md. Past President of Rotary Club of Bangkok Suwanabhum

“Cervical Cancer Vaccination Project” initiated from the fact that I am a prediatrician and my spouse is a doctor expert on cancer. When I assumed the position of Club President in 2012, we decided to do this project. I then proceeded to acquire information and details from Thai Gynecologic Cancer Society where I have a doctor mentor whom I know and familiar at Bhumibol Hospital before starting Rotary Grant. At that year, it was the first year that Rotary International changed from Matching Grant to Global Grant. It was very pleased that DGE.Jason Lim, who then was District Service Project Chair, taught and assisted us thoroughly. We managed to gain financial support from the Rotary Club of Puli in Taiwan and the project has successfully achieved for the first time. Later, we gained support from PP.Sirichai Simaskul who had interest in the project since he was District Rotary Foundation Chair of District 3350. He invited us to do the project with Rotary Club of Bangrak in which received financial support from a Rotary club in Korea, and the project was done for the second year. The third project, which is on progress, started from the fact that Rotary Club of Bangkok Suwanabhum is a host counsellor to a Master’s Degree student from Japan studying at National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA). She introduced us to know Rotary Club of Kariya, District 2760 Japan. The two clubs have been discussing about this project since when PDG.Prawit Rojkajonnapalai was the District Governor. Due to that the Past District Governor used to serve the District as District Rotary Foundation Chair, he joined us in meetings since at the very early stage. Finally, we succeeded in getting financial support from Japan and this project counts as our third Global Grant Project. Governor’s Monthly Newsletter

Co ve r St ory The reason why we chose to do this project is because Cervical Cancer is the only type of cancer that can be prevented and is the second highest disease that kills Thai women at the rate of 12 persons per day. Until today we have provided Cervical Cancer vaccines to almost 1,500 female students. The first two times were done to students in 9 schools in Pravet District and Wat Mahapruettharam Girls’ School in Bangrak District. The third time was done at Ban Rajvithi Orphanage, including 7 schools that have Earlyact Clubs in Bangkok, Nonthaburi, Angthong and Lopburi. We use approximately 3,000 Baht per 2 vaccine shots per 1 child. This must thank PP.Yod Sangswangwatana in helping negotiate with medical company to get the price as low as this. Children at the ages of 9 – 12 are vaccinated, which we believe that these are the ages the children have not been engaged in sexual intercourse. Hence, the body can build immunity as high as 90% and last for 20 – 30 years. By that time, these vaccinated children will be at the ages beyond the risking age range of having Cervical Cancer. If a child is affected with Cervical Cancer, it takes around 10 years to discover and would already be in the second or third stage of cancer. The curing cost would be no less than 500,000 Baht. Given that information, it means that almost 1,500 children that we have vaccinated can save the curing cost of the country up to 750 million Baht in the next 20 – 30 years. Besides, we can make people as many as 10 times the number of children vaccinated (15,000 people) happy. These people are parents, relatives, husbands and kids as well as some doctors and nurses who will have more time to take care of those patients with unpreventable diseases. Apart from providing vaccines, we also take an hour to educate and acknowledge all students in those schools both boys and girls, including students in Middle and High Schools, teachers and parents about the effects and transmission of Cervical Cancer when we go to provide the first vaccine shot. After that, it will be question and answer, and games time in which we also give little souvenirs to students.

6 months later during the given of second vaccine shots, CP.Ariyasiri Phipatnara from RC Ratchathewi brought Rotaractors dressed in mascots to teach students about His Majesty the King’s Sufficient Economy, gratefulness, games and emphasize on self-disciplines as teenagers to avoid undesired diseases. From all these details and information, it can be seen that Rotary Club of Bangkok Suwanabhum has followed the guidelines of Rotary, having good Sister Clubs, good fellowship, supported by the Rotary Foundation, and use minimal amount of money but to the highest potential and value. The Thai Gynecologic Cancer Society that we approached for knowledge at the beginning also looks to raise funds to acquire Cervical Cancer vaccines same as we do. When they organized Charity Walk & Run Mini Marathon, we got help from IPP.Prasarn Chirachaisakul from RC KasemratKlongtoei and gained 300,000 Baht without any costs to Rotary. We would like to express sincere appreciation to DG.Chaivai Poonlapmongkol who sees the importance of this project and made this to be one of the two projects in District 3350 to have different Rotary clubs in the District to help children in their own Districts and Provinces. We take this opportunity to invite all Club Presidents to do this Cervical Cancer Vaccination Project. If interested, Rotary Club of Bangkok Suwanabhum would be more than happy to provide advices and guidance.

At Manila Rotary Institute On November 5 - 8 , 2015 in Philippines

E d it o r’s Ta l k

คะ๠นนภารประชุลŕš€ŕ¸”มอนพฤศŕ¸ˆิภายน 2558 November 2015 Attendance Report

Dear Fellow Rotarians, District Governor’s Newsletter December issue has passed halfway already, which means that all Club Presidents have done regular weekly meeting and other activities halfway as well. At the same time, we’ll notice that your President-Elect starts getting to know his/her peer Presidents and starts learning to continue club’s task from your Rotary year. I’ve attended the Rotary Institute with District Governor and many Past District Governors from four Districts in Manila, Philippines last month. It’s too bad that not so many Rotarians attended this national convention. Besides the knowledge that we gain, we also got an opportunity to visit some important tourist attractions. The detail on this is published in the article by PP.Sirichai Simasakul. December is the Disease Prevention and Treatment month, which Rotary International has set as one of six areas that Rotarians should focus and emphasize on. Allow me to talk about a currently well-known project in D.3350, the “Knowledge giving and Cervical Cancer Vaccinate for 9-12 Years old girlsâ€? project by the Rotary Club of Bangkok Suwanabhum. In this year, DG.Chaivai has announced that this project is one from two projects that District 3350 encourages each Rotary Club do. (Another one is “One School-One Vegetable Gardenâ€? project by RC.Angthong.) If you are interested to know more detail, you may ďŹ nd it from the article referred from Cover Story . It’s the sentence that PP.Saisawat Rojanaprasertkij spoke during the District Governor meets Presidents Meeting in Singburi on November 21. The last month of the year seems to be a wonderful and happy period. There are lots of holidays. But don’t forget the important event for all Rotarians that is the Rotary Walk & Run to End Polio on Sunday December 27 at SuanLuangPraram 8. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Yours in Rotary, Trong Sangswangwatana RC. of Bangkok Suwanabhum
