ประธานโรตารสากล ป 2558-59 In life, sometimes the experiences that matter the most are the briefest. They pass in the blink of an eye: a few days, a few hours, a few moments. They are the experiences that illuminate the landscape of our memory, shining brightly even years later. They are the moments in which we see, suddenly, something we had not seen; we understand something we had not understood; we forge a connection we had not expected. For me, this has been a Rotary year like no other. I have been around the world, traversing countries and continents. I have been to places I had never seen before, and I have returned to familiar places and seen them, as for the first time, through the lens of Rotary. When you travel for Rotary, you travel with a different sense of perspective and a different sense of purpose. There is an awareness of being part of something larger than yourself. When you board a plane or a train, or leave your home in the dark hours of early morning, you may be leaving for lands unknown – but at your destination, there will be no strangers. There will be Rotarians, waiting and welcoming. There will be work to do, something to learn, and perhaps something to teach. There will be connections to forge, friendships to build, and memo- ries to carry for a lifetime. This year, I have been the traveler, and I have been welcomed by Rotarians around the world. A few months from now, from 28 May to 1 June, I invite you to step into my experience: allow me to welcome you to Seoul for our 107th International Convention. The Koreans have a saying: 사람이나면서울로보내라. In English we would say, “When a person is born, send them to Seoul.” For Seoul is a city of opportunities: a wonderful destination with rich traditions, modern conveniences, and a culture unlike any other. But I ask you to join me in Seoul not only for all of this, but also for the experiences you will have there with your fellow Rotarians. For a brief moment in time, you will experience Rotary as I have experienced it: in all its diversity, all its warmth, and all its potential. You will be greeted as an old friend by people you have never met; you will share your thoughts, even without a shared language. You will learn with wonder of what Rotary has achieved, and leave inspired to achieve even more. Before this Rotary year comes to its close, I ask you to do what I have done: to leave your homes, to board your flights, to travel toward the unknown with an open heart and an open mind, confident that Rotary will welcome you. Join me, and your fellow Rotarians, as we Connect with Korea – Touch the World.

Dear Fellow Rotarians, February is the month of Peace and Conflict Prevention and Resolution. Rotary gives importance to doing service projects in the ‘Six Areas of Focus’ of which Peace and Conflict Prevention and Resolution is one area that Rotary gives a lot of importance. This can be seen from setting up Rotary Peace Centers in universities in 6 countries i.e. United States, Japan, United Kingdom, Australia, Sweden and Thailand. In Thailand the Rotary Peace Center is located at Chulalongkorn University and had just completed 10 years in 2015. Conflicts when resolved will lead to peace, however conflicts must be resolved in a way that leads to understanding between the parties. February is the month of the Rotary family, and also the month of ‘Love’ for most people. The Rotarian, as one who gives without expecting anything in return, can join to give love, through service projects that offer happiness to the community. I believe that every service project of Rotary clubs -- beside helping those in need, also give happiness to the recipient. This is another way to promote peace and reduce conflicts. So I invite all of you in this month to give love through projects that you have organized, to be a gift to the community. On the 23rd of this month, Rotary celebrates its 111th anniversary. May all of you have a role in moving the wheels of Rotary forward. The mental and physical energy that you have offered for Rotary are invaluable. I thank you as District Governor and an RI Officer for sacrifices you all have made. Another activity that must be mentioned is Thai Rotary Day. On 30th January 2016 at Lumpini Park Rotarians have devoted abilities, physical and mental capabilities to make this event turn out in the best manner and to impress participants of the event. Hundreds of activities offered to thousands of visitors have created a valuable image for people to touch upon friendship of Rotarians. I thank from my heart to Chair of the Organizing Committee PDG Suchada Ithijarukul and all committee members for their dedication. In ending, we will have a District Conference for D. 3350 on 11-13 March 2016 at Regent Cha-am Hotel. This conference is held only once a year to report on the progress of activities that occurred in our District, and is also a good opportunity to build friendship between clubs. I invite Rotarians to give a bit of your time to show solidarity with the District 3350 which we all love. I hope to see you all at the District Conference for the year of ‘Be a Gift to the World’. On behalf of the DRFC, it is my pleasure to announce that the year of DG Chaivai Poonlapmongkol, has seen the record high donation into the Rotary Foundation, and it has continued to come in. I would like to thank all fellow Rotarians for your continued contribution. For the clubs taking part in the “Global Grant: Sharing our Strengths”, hosted by our district please be informed of the following updates. Projects that have been submitted and are being processed by TRF include RC Bangkok Bangna’s Water Purifier Project , RC Patumwan’s Library for Kids Project, RC. Sathorn’s Vocational Training & Aid Kits for the Blind Project , RC Yannawa’s Wheelchair Project and RC Charoen Nakorn’s Hospital Bed Project. All of these projects are expected to receive TRF authorization soon, except the Wheelchair Project of RC Yannawa that needs to be revised to correspond with the 6 Areas of Focus. RC Bangkok Pattanakarn is currently giving the final touch to their Home Improvement Project proposal and it should be ready for submission soon. The Eyeglasses Project of RC Pranakorn that will give away eyeglasses to all clubs participating in any project hosted by the DRF, is being reviewed by TRF and hopefully will be approved soon. I would also like to take this opportunity to inform the Board members of all clubs about the core project DGE Jason Lim will ask all clubs to participate in next year in order to receive Governor Salute - Library for Kids Project. It is a chance all Rotarians can play a part in the development of Thailand through the promotion of youth education. There will be more extensive PR of Rotarian activities than before. To qualify, all clubs will have to submit an MOU that is signed by the club president 2016-17 and president elect 2017-18 and any clubs that do not have a president elect will not be qualified to participate in the project. All clubs also need to submit the names of participating schools and the MOUs signed between the club and the recipients by May 30, 2016.

Fellow Rotarians On January 8, 2016 there was a Sister Club signing ceremony between Rotary Club of Jeju Seobu, District 3662, Korea and Rotary Club of Charoen Nakorn - the first pair of this year. Rotary Club of Jeju Seobu is not a stranger to our District. Club President Yun Sung Min and his 12 members joined Rotary Club of Bangrak’s 31st Anniversary last year on November 26, 2015. They came along with Rotary Club of Shin Jeju which is the Sister Club of Rotary Club of Bangrak. Moreover Rotary Club of Jeju Seobu has also participated at a few Global Grant Projects of Rotary Club of Bangrak, such as Cervical Cancer Prevention Project with Rotary Club of Bangkok Suwanabhum, Mother and Child Project with Rotary Club of Buengkum. Including recently a Medical Equipment for Bangbuathong Hospital with Rotary Club of Nonthaburi and Bangkruai Nonthaburi. All these 3 projects worth not less than 6 million Baht. I do hope that this Sister Club signing ceremony will strengthen the relationship of Rotary Club of Jeju Seobu and District 3350 by having Rotary Club of Charoen Nakorn as the leader. The success of this matching must give a big credit to PP. Jay Chung from Rotary Club of Pranakorn as well as Member of District International Committee, who makes this event happened. A big applause to PP. Jay.

âõÒáä· - ÁÔµÃÀÒ¾äÃŒ¢Íºà¢µ Greetings fellow Rotarians, I am honoured and delighted to have the privilege to write an article in District Governor’s Monthly Newsletter again this month as District Rotaract Subcommittee Member this Rotary year. February is Peace and Conflict Prevention/Resolution Month. What I would like to talk about this time may not directly be about peace; but it is about world-wide fellowship of Rotaract. One of the uniqueness of Rotary is that we have Rotary clubs situate around the globe. Therefore, many of you may be familiar with Rotary clubs having sister or twin clubs from overseas to create fellowship and join hands in doing service projects through Global Grants of the Rotary Foundation. Likewise, Rotaract clubs also situate around the globe. Although Rotaract clubs may not do Global Grants projects as Rotary clubs do; but Rotaract also has Sister Clubs/Twin Clubs Signing Ceremonies, having sister clubs, doing joint projects, visiting one another as well as idea and cultural exchange. For example, going back to 2006 when I was a Rotaractor before becoming a Rotarian. Back then, I was a member of the Rotaract Club of Thammasat University. that was a sister club with Rotaract Club of Singapore West from Singapore. Rotaract Club President and I, including 5 other members, altogether 7 Rotaractors, had the opportunity to represent Rotaract Club of Thammasat University to visit Rotaract Club of Singapore West in Singapore. We introduced the host Rotaract club and sponsoring Rotary club about Rotaract in Thailand, as well as having Thai Cultural Performance to show them. During this visit, Rotaract Club of Singapore West had warmly welcomed us and took us for a tour around Singapore. Although time has passed for almost 10 years, former members of Rotaract Club of Singapore West and former members of Rotaract Club of Thammasat University, including myself, are still good friends and remain in contact with each other with good fellowship. Because of fellowship, there is better understanding, no conflicts and have peace.

Running a Rotary Club must have clear goal, conduct in the right direction and at the appropriate speed. All members must involve in the goals setting and direction and speed defining process. Members are the most important part of Rotary Club. Therefore, membership development program is critical and needed. Membership development starts from friendship building. Friendship building starts from faith building. There are 3 levels of faith building: 1. Faith in the inducer. The inducer must have right understanding in Rotary’s ideology and gain trust from the prospects. If the right persons are induced by a good Rotarian, they will join Rotary. This is because they will get the right information about Rotary. If they already know Rotary, it is a good chance to be in a good organization. It is as Thai word said “friends are same type of people”. 2. Faith in the organization. Once the prospects join the club activities, all members must express the organization ideology to promote the words of the inducer. Friendly environment, showing “service above self” ideology and the telling story of the service projects are the keys things to make new members faith in the organization. These will ties new members to the organization instead of the inducer. Therefore, if the inducer has to leave the club, by any reason, he or she will remain. 3. Faith in the leader. It is the duty of all members to elect the club leaders who can create faith to all members. Especially for the prospects or new members, the club leaders’ actions can enhance or disappoint their faith. I am sure that fellow Rotarians are good persons who join together to do the good things. It is not a hard work for us to induce other good persons to join Rotary by creating faith. All of you play a critical role in membership development.

Greetings fellow Rotarians!
ÊÇÑÊ´Õ¤‹ÐÁÇÅÁÔµÃâÃá·àÃÕ¹·ÕèÃÑ¡·Ø¡·‹Ò¹
Today I am very glad to have the opportunity to write about “Fellowship”.
Çѹ¹Õé´Ô©Ñ¹ÃÙŒÊÖ¡ÀÒ¤ÀÙÁÔã¨à»š¹Í‹ҧÁÒ¡·ÕèÁÕâÍ¡ÒÊä´ŒÁÒ¾Ù´¤Ø¡ѹ¶Ö§¤ÓÇ‹Ò “ÁÔµÃÀÒ¾”
Every Rotary year, we have been talking about Fellowship, and we have repeatedly been saying this word for a long time. However, in practice, how deep do we understand the meaning of “fellowship”?
ã¹·Ø¡æ »‚ àÃÒ¨ÐÁÕ¡Òþٴ¡Ñ¹¶Ö§¤ÓÇ‹ÒÁÔµÃÀÒ¾ àÃÒ¾Ù´µÍ¡ÂéÓ¤Ó¹ÕéÁÒ â´ÂµÅÍ´ ᵋ㹷ҧ»¯ÔºÑµÔáŌǾǡàÃÒࢌÒ㨤ÓÇ‹ÒÁÔµÃÀÒ¾¡Ñ¹ÅÖ¡«Öé§á¤‹ä˹
As a Rotarian, I think the word “fellowship” is a very meaningful word. This is because only this one word, there are many things that follow such as: • • • •
Being in the club and society happily Have sincerity and caring Have good friendship with one another Have forgiveness (this is important – with forgiveness, everything will run smoothly) • And lastly, being a giver and a receiver unconditionally, and much more. All good things come with fellowship. Our Rotary clubs will be successful with fellowship in the clubs. I hope that all Rotarians should always have this word in their minds.

What do I see? I see people living their everyday lives and doing everyday things, sometimes making an incredible effort to do so. I see children doing everything they can to go to school. I see street dancers, exploring transformative peace through art and dance, performing all across the city. I see women carrying the produce of their fields to the market. I see entrepreneurs who open businesses and create jobs. I see musicians and singers who promote peace and justice through their music. I see the yearly peace festival which is organized in Goma each year that draws a crowd of thousands. I see young people organizing in their home towns to improve their communities. And I see Rotarians, who are also active in bettering their communities. I also see smoke coming from Mount Nyiragongo volcano which lies just beyond the edge of the city of Goma. I see the quiet blue stillness of Lake Kivu with fishing boats returning home at dusk. I see the Rwenzori mountains capped with snow. I see birds flitting around the flowers and lemon trees in the garden. I see baby gorillas playing and tumbling over each other in the jungle.
What a Wonderful World Shannon O’Rourke, USA. Rotary Peace Fellow January 2016 Session
Arriving from across the globe this week, the 20th class of Rotary Peace Fellows at the Rotary Peace Center at Chulalongkorn University has hit the ground running. Like Rotary, we are a mixture of people from all over the world committed to advancing world understanding and peace. We are a diverse group of 21 individuals from 18 different countries, working in a range of fields but all with similar goals. When we arrived in Thailand, we immediately stepped into a family. Many of us were met by Rotary Host Counselors or other Rotarians when we arrived at the airport to help introduce us to Bangkok. Our first week here has already been filled with exploring the city, dinners and an orientation with our host counselors. Past Rotary International President Bhichai Rattakul spoke to us during the Rotary orientation this weekend, and welcomed us to the Rotary family. Even before the formal orientation, we already felt at home in our temporary home of Bangkok among the support of Rotarians and the Rotary Peace Center at Chulalongkorn University. There is an energy and an enthusiasm that is undeniable among the Fellows. Each fellow gave a conflict presentation during our first week in Thailand to introduce the topic that they will reflect on and analyze during our three months in the program. The presentations included a range of topics including land conflict in East Timor and Kenya, sexual violence in India, race relations in the United States and discriminated minorities in Yemen, among many other topics. Each of the Fellows presented something that showed their passion for their work and also their passion for working with their communities to improve the lives of their fellow human beings. The presentations sparked conversations among Fellows that continued outside the classroom on girls’ education in Afghanistan, how to support youth and the complexities of the cyclical violence in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, among others. The Fellows take every opportunity to ask questions, share, engage, learn and brainstorm with each other. I myself am thrilled to be among such a passionate group of individuals who are working hard to promote peace in a range of different ways around the world. I think I will be learning as much outside of the classroom as I will inside the classroom. As someone with no formal peace training who has been working in conflict-affected settings for the past 5+ years, and working on conflict-related issues for longer than that, I am excited to dedicate the next three months to learning about peace and conflict resolution both in the classroom and from the experiences of my fellow Fellows. I live and work in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), which I have called home for almost five years. It is often called the “Heart of Darkness” and the “Rape Capital of the World.” These are absolutely horrendous nicknames for such an incredibly beautiful place. With a bloody history as well as recently over 20 years of war that resulted in the death of over five million people and the rape of countless women, I understand where these nicknames come from. However, these are nicknames that miss the bigger picture and that do not do justice to the country. One might call these nicknames the “simple story” of the DRC. I was living in Goma when the M23 rebel group took over the city, and the destruction that armed conflict has caused in Eastern DRC cannot be ignored. However, that is not what I usually see when I look at the country.

As part of his speech at our Rotary orientation, Past Rotary International President Bhichai Rattakul quoted the song “What a Wonderful World.” And it is true, it really is a wonderful world. That does not mean that horrible things do not happen or that life is easy. After all, we are here to study peace and conflict resolution. But despite all the terrible things that happen in the world, the world is also wonderful. And the 21 Rotary Peace Fellows who just arrived in Bangkok are some of those in this world who focus on the positive while trying to make the world a better place. I am encouraged and further motivated by the Fellows around me and I look forward to seeing what these next three months will bring! Dear Fellow Rotarians, Another huge Rotary event has just passed that is “Thai Rotary Day 2016â€? - Be a Gift to the World Day, which was held at Lumpini Park on Saturday January 30th. By pre-public relation through newspapers, television and radio channels, including internal communication through all channels among us have brought almost 10,000 people, that composed of Rotarians, families, and people who are interested, to visit 6 Areas of Focus community services in over 120 booths. Congratulations to PDG.Suchada Ithijarukul - Organizing Chair, and all Organizing Committee for their untiredly efforts and the great success. Since the District Governor has set policy to bring NonRotarian experts instead of having only competent Rotarians as Speakers like in the past, therefore during the Leadership Seminar on Saturday January 23, 2015, we had speakers from LINE Corporation, Thai Coach Institute, and the most important main guest speaker is Mr. Suphachai Chearavanont, President and CEO of TRUE Corporation Plc., who made excellent speech that full of thoughtful content, which caused time y so quickly. For the pictures of both events, you must have seen them in the previous page already. For another event in January, I got an opportunity to attend the Club Charter ceremony of the newest club in Cambodia, RC. of Sangke Battambang. There are approximately 20 Rotarians from D.3350, Thailand joined and congratulated them. In the same occasion, DG.Chaivai Poonlapmongkol has also made oďŹƒcial visit to RC.Pursat, RC.Siem Reap, and RC.Angkor. As always, I would like to encourage you to visit other clubs whenever you can. Please take it. I’ve gotten many new friends and I have gained much more experiences while I serve Rotary at District level. Happy Rotary Birthday on February 23rd
