They were worshippers of Prana, the wind god. áÅз‹Ò¹ÍÀÔ»ÃзÒÃÕ ÍÒ¨Òà·Ñé§Êͧ¹Ñº¶×;ÃÐà·ÇÐáË‹§ÅÁ»ÃÒ³ Çѹ˹Ö觢³Ð·Õè·Ñé§Êͧ One day, the two men were about to sit down to lunch when a ·‹Ò¹¡ÓÅѧ¹Ñè§ÃѺ»ÃзҹÍÒËÒáÅÒ§Çѹ¡çÁÕà´ç¡ÂÒ¡¨¹¤¹Ë¹Öè§ÁÒà¤ÒзÕè»ÃеÙà¾×èÍ¢Í poor student knocked on their door, asking for food. ÍÒËÒèҡ·‹Ò¹ “No, boy, do not bother us at this hour,” was the reply. The student ÍÒ¨ÒàµÍºä»Ç‹Ò “äÁ‹ä´Œ´Í¡ä͌˹٠Í‹ÒÁÒú¡Ç¹àÃÒàÇÅÒ¹ÕéàÅ” à´ç¡¤¹¹Ñé¹ was surprised but very hungry, so he persisted.

“Tell me, honored sirs, which deity do you worship?” “Prana, the wind god,” they answered impatiently.

“·‹Ò¹ÍÒ¨Òà¤ÃѺ âÅ¡Á¹ØÉ àÃÒ¶×Í¡Óà¹Ô´áÅÐÊÔé¹ÊØ´¨Ò¡ÅÁ»ÃÒ³ «Ö觾ÃÐà·ÇÐ

“Do you not know that the world begins and ends with wind, ä´Œ»ÃзҹŧÁÒãˌᡋÁÇÅÁ¹ØÉ ·Ñé§âÅ¡ ·‹Ò¹ÍÒ¨Òà·ÃÒºäËÁ¤ÃѺ?” and that wind pervades the entire universe?”

ÍÒ¨Òà·Ñé§Êͧ·‹Ò¹ÃÙŒÊÖ¡ÃÓ¤ÒÞÁÒ¡¡Ñºá¢¡·ÕèÁÔä´ŒÃѺàªÔÞ¤¹¹Õé µÍºÇ‹Ò

The two sages were by now very irritated by their impertinent “ṋ¹Í¹·ÕèÊØ´ àÃÒ·ÃÒº´Õ” guest. “Of course we know it!” they replied. “Well, then,” continued the student, “if Prana pervades the universe, then he pervades me also, since I am but part of the universe. He is also in this hungry body, which stands before you begging for a bite to eat! And so in denying food to me, you deny it to the very deity whom you say you serve.”

The sages realized the student spoke the truth and invited him ÍÒ¨Òà·Ñé§ÊͧÃÙŒÊ֡䴌NjÒà´ç¡¹ŒÍ¤¹¹Õé¾Ù´¤ÇÒÁ¨ÃÔ§ ¨Ö§à» ´»ÃеÙãËŒà´ç¡à¢ŒÒÁÒ to enter and share their meal. For they understood, at that moment, ÃѺ»ÃзҹÍÒËÒôŒÇ¡ѹ ·‹Ò¹à¢ŒÒã¨áÅŒÇÇ‹Ò àÁ×èÍ·‹Ò¹à» ´»ÃеÙãˌᡋ¼ÙŒ·ÕèÁҢͤÇÒÁ that by opening the door to one who sought their help, they were ª‹ÇÂàËÅ×Í ·‹Ò¹ÁÔä´Œª‹ÇÂàËÅ×Íà¾Õ§ᵋºØ¤¤Å¤¹à´ÕÂÇ áµ‹ÂѧÊÒÁÒö¡ŒÒÇä»ÊÙ‹¨Ø´ËÁÒ not only serving that individual – but reaching toward a larger ÍѹÂÔè§ãËÞ‹¡Ç‹Ò¹Ñé¹´ŒÇ goal. Our experience of Rotary is, for the most part, based in our own communities. We meet every week in our clubs, in the same places, with the same familiar friends. While almost all of us are involved in some way or other in international service, the Rotary we see and share from day to day feels very local. It can be easy to lose sight of the larger picture – of what our service truly means. Every impact you have as a Rotarian, individually and through your club, is multiplied by the power of our numbers. When you feed one person who is hungry, when you educate one person who is illiterate, when you protect one child from disease, the impact may seem small. It is anything but. For it is only through the power of numbers, through the power of our individual actions and gifts, that we can have the impact we seek: to truly Be a Gift to the World.

Dear Fellow Rotarians, From the very inception of Rotary by the four founding members – Paul P Harris a lawyer, Silvester Schiele a coal merchant, Gustavus Loehr a mining engineer, and Hiram Shorey a tailor, Rotary has always given high importance to vocational diversity among its members. Rotary is defined as an organization of business and professional leaders who bring together expertise from their various professions to provide humanitarian services. Rotary also places as an ‘Objective of Rotary’ to promote high ethical standard in business and professions, recognition of worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each rotarian’s occupation as a way to serve society. January is designated the month of Vocational Service. Today while Rotary places high emphasis in providing services to the community, among Rotarians -- high ethical standard in business is still a required qualification for all Rotarians. This year District 3350 gives as much importance to Vocational Services as to other avenues of services because I recognize the importance of every vocation. I ask that District Vocational Services Chair CP.Suwanna Vongsurakrai emphasize this as follows: 1. Build awareness of promoting ethics in vocation by setting the framework for ethical behavior which Rotarians must be able to use together with the 4-way-test in their business and professional life. 2. Provide training in vocational and self improvement, by providing training which will enable recipients to find work and suitable vocation. 3. Bring teams to teach vocational activities in the communities where such training is required. 4. Recognise outstanding vocational practise by offering awards in high ethical standard for business or professions which demonstrate such high standards in their behavior to customers, employees or within the communities as an example to others. I take this opportunity to invite all club presidents and fellow Rotarians to use this opportunity to do activities in vocational services, build understanding and promote high ethical standards in business and professions which is another valuable service of Rotary to -‘Be a Gift to the World’. Happy New Year. The first month of the new year starts with joy and energetic. Circle of Service Above Self continues to rotate with the power of the service of us. The message of district secretary for this month is a reminder to all clubs have checked the Rotary Club Invoice for RI of the second periods, January 2016, which will be received no later than the third week of January. When all the club has to check and collect dues from members of the club then please remit within no more than 120 days from the date of January 1, 2016. For one more payment that is The District Fee. The club must pay to the district financial once a year, amounting to 1,000 Baht per member. Until now the report found that there are several clubs who have yet to pay the district fee. Please kindly operation in this by soon. The district needs to take money from the fee for all members as the cost of administration and the organizer of the district meeting and activity. Finally, I wish that all fellow Rotarians will be enjoyed throughout the year. And be a gift to the world in the next six months of the Rotary year.

January : Vocational Service Month D3350 Rotarians were continuously actively participating in providing vocational service to the public at Princess Pa Foundation, Thai Red Cross Society. The foundation is under HRH Princess Soamsavali Patronage. The Princess has shown some keen interest in public health and social welfare. Princess Pa Foundation Objectives: To support and complement government as well as private sectors in relief missions for the affected in time of suffering from severe flood disaster, that is to encourage the less-suffered to help the more-suffered and the stronger to help the weaker by emphasizing on survivability and rehabilitation. In all of our earliest days, Vocational Service was clearly the primary focus of Rotary. When professionals join a Rotary club, they do so as a representative of their classification or profession. Vocational Service gradually emerged into a wide variety of Rotary activities to serve society to improve quality of life. All Rotarians could contribute yourself in vocational services by: • • • • • • •

Contribute their vocational talents to the problems and needs of society. Classification talks at club meetings Mentor and assist young people Special Vocational Training for disabled persons Promote ethical behavior in business Volunteer in helping-coordinating-promoting service Create a vocational award program

January – The Month of Vocational Service The Rotary One day is an event that has now been arranged four times and in each time, the vocational training was focusing to students and the community. The first time, it was organized by the Rotary Club of Wat Singh supported by other clubs, where there were many vocation trainings such as making the herbal compress,rose folding with the pandanus leaves and etc. The second time was co-organized by the Rotary Club of PraramasuanLopburi, Rotary Club of Lopburi, Rotary Club of Banmi and Rotary Club of PanaraiLopburi and also supported by other clubs. They provided various teachings such as making jelly and salad dressing along with distribution of reading glasses by Rotary Club of Pranakorn. For the EarlyAct club of Kumjornwit School, they taught painting and reading to the younger pupils.

¤ÃÑ駷Õè 1

The Third was arranged by Rotary Club of Bangkok Ratanakosin with support of other rotary clubs. There, they taught twisting balloons to form in different animals and flowers as well as making descoupage. The reading glasses were given away by Rotary Club of Pranakorn. RCC Techasampan also participated the event. The Fourth was co-organized by Rotary Club of Tharua Ayutthaya, Rotary Club of Prasrisuriyothai Ayutthaya, Rotary Club of Saraburi, Rotary Club of Bang Pa-In and Rotary Club of Pranakorn Sri Ayutthaya. They taught to weavebaskets from strips of plastic, and make doormats. Rotary Club of Pranakorn handed out reading glasses. We would like to invite every rotary club to jointly hold a Rotary One Day to spread out the reputation of rotary and help the community in its own area.

Dear Fellow Rotarians At the 1917 convention, outgoing RI President Arch C. Klumph proposed to set up an endowment “for the purpose of doing good in the world.” In 1928, it was renamed The Rotary Foundation, and it became a distinct entity within Rotary International. One of its main missions has been to support humanitarian work of Rotary clubs around the world. In our district the DRF’s main mission is to promote humanitarian activities of all clubs. DG Chaivai Poonlapmongkol, DGE Jason Lim, and DGN Marasee Skunliew all feel that the DRF should play a part in empowering all clubs in the district. Therefore, the DRFC has encouraged various clubs that have the capability to carry out a Global Grant project to involve small and newly-founded clubs within the district in the projects and share with them the items which they can then bring back to their local communities. The 3-year plan is as follows:

I am pleased to say that the first year has seen a lot of interest from small and large clubs, and a total of 63 clubs have participated in the projects. A lot of annual fund contribution has been made by small clubs in exchange for the specially-allocated DDF. As the DDF next year will increase from this year, DGE Jason Lim will increase the amount of DDF to be allocated to the clubs that contribute their annual funds to $US 1,500. A new committee will also be set up under the DRF with a task to select projects that the clubs submit in to request funding and international partners. Regarding the project proposal, the clubs can submit their proposal in Thai, and once selected by the committee, a team will help translate the proposal into English. DGE Jason Lim has set the target of the number of Global Grant projects to 89. This is indeed a step forward in our quest to share the strengths to all Rotary clubs in our district. And DGN Marasee Skunliew’s mission in the year after next year is to create sustainability with the “Share Projects” in our district.

EarlyAct – Rotary’s Smallest Service Partner EarlyAct is a Rotary’s smallest partner in service whose age ranges from 5 to 13 years old and is sponsored by the local Rotary club in its area. The objectives of an EarlyAct club are to lay a strong foundation for small children in understanding about Rotary concepts and to create projects that will provide opportunities for the EarlyAct members to grow and become Interactors in the future.

As an EarlyActor, the member of the club will gain valuable experience in helping his or her school and community as well as the world in some small but significant ways. It is easier for Rotarians to instill knowledge and caring personality in small children that will lead to character building and growing relationship among EarlyAct members. Being an EarlyActor also focuses on leadership development and paying respect to other people’s opinions.It encourages the EarlyAct club members to be responsible, to have patience, and to be good citizens of their country. These are the main objectives of an EarlyAct club. The service projects of an EarlyAct club are divided into 3 categories below. These projects do not need to have big budget but must ensure that public awareness and caring for others are achieved by the participants from the projects. 1. School service projects which respond to the social needs at the school level. 2. Community service projects that can be done in cooperation with the community service partners in the area or with the sponsor Rotary club. 3. International service projects which may be linked to many EarlyAct clubs around the world. Social media are convenient tools for the club members to communicate and exchange good ideas with EarlyActors in any part of the world. Therefore, I would like to encourage every Rotary club in all districts to sponsor at least one EarlyAct club in your community so that you can have these youngest service partners as part of your Rotary family that will lead to an important goal of membership sustainability in the future.

Rotary in Action to Promote Economic Growth in Communities D.3350 District Governor, Chaivai Poonlapmongkol, among all vocational volunteers and Rajanukul Institute to promote Rotarian-led Service Project in establishing “Social Business Center” to support economic growth and community strengths. The idea concept is to network with social entrepreneurs and the community leaders in developing the learning center to strengthen the local entrepreneurs and community leaders, particularly teachers and parents at Rajanukul Institute*. D.3350 Rotary International members have continually participated, adapted and improved the way they respond to local communities’ unique needs. What we do during development phase I: Establish Economic and Community Development Center at Rajanukul Institute. We work closely with Rajanukul Institute’ executives in planning, organizing, developing a sustainable social business project in Training the Trainers on Vocational Project, provide equipment and supplies for model production development, cooperate with social entrepreneurs to create and maintain a social business financial accounting and in product and market development. The 2nd phase of Rajanukul 6-Areas of Focus learning Center is under co- project team construction. *Rajanukul Institute was established in 1960 under “Intellectual Disability Hospital Program”, one of the programs for economic and social development of the First National Public Health Development Plan of the Division of Hospitals for Mental Diseases, Department of Medical Services, Ministry of Public Health Thailand. His Majesty the King dubbed the new name as “Rajanukul Hospital” on the 22nd of April, 1979. In the year 2003, Rajanukul Hospital was upgraded and renamed as “Rajanukul Institute”. Rajanukul Institute provides prevention, treatment and rehabilitation services for children with intellectual disabilities alongside with our relentless and vigorous involvement in research and development. The Institute are well-positioned as academic and service leaders for the intellectual development at the national level, which was achieved through our active and earnest participation in the intellectual development and caring network for Thai children (normal group, at-risk group and patient group).

Fellow Rotarians: In my December issue , I have mentioned about my participation at Manila Rotary Institute in Philippines in early November. In this month issue, I will mention in depth about the interesting topics of the Seminar. After the opening ceremony in the afternoon on November 6, the following day November 7, the morning plenary session started with speech from several distinguished speakers such as, “Light up Rotary: Engagement of Members” by Gary C.K. Huang, Immediate Past RI President and “Rotary’s Polio Initiative, TRF and You: The Unbeatable Team” by Paul A. Netzel, Vice Chairman of Rotary Foundation of Rotary International. And another interesting topic is “Strengthening the Brand of Rotary” by Julia D. Phelps, RI Director. You will see that RI gave priority to these 3 topics, Membership growth and retention, Polio Eradication and Rotary Public Image. You will see that in every session, the seminar will emphasize on these 3 important topics.

And when it came to the breakout sessions in the afternoon, the workshop emphasized on the “Ethics and Rotary Four Way Test” and “Understanding Rotary Club Central”. To cover more participants, the breakout session also has the Mandarin speaking rooms. The last day of the seminar on November 8, which was just only half a day, the topics were the Report of the yesterday breakout sessions and the Open Forum. The panelists of the Open Forum, which last for one hour, were all the speakers from the beginning of the seminar. The seminar adjourned at noon. The hightlight of this seminar is the announcement of our District 3350, during the year of IPDG. Surachat Chuenchoksan, being the 2nd highest contribution to the Annual Fund in Zone 6B as well as the 3rd highest increasing of membership in Zone 6B. For your information Zone 6B covered 10 Districts. Now come to the Bangkok Rotary Institute, which a lot of readers thought that I have write the wrong headline of this article. I have already informed you about Manila Rotary Institute in both last and this issue, because next year Thailand is being nominated to hold this same Institute. January is the Vocational Service Month, in which District Governor and District 3350 Committee Chairs recognize it’s important and write articles about it in many different aspects. Please ďŹ nd these articles inside. District Conference at Cha-Am, Phetchaburi province is upcoming during March 11-13, 2016. District Sub-committee has set up many contests i.e. Club Service Sub-committee hosted Rotary Information Contest, Best Club Bulletin Contest, and The Best Club Service Contest, etc. All contest materials must be submitted no later than January 30, 2016 so that the committee has enough time to make decision for announcement in DC 2016. This is the reminder for all Club Presidents once again. So, for any club that may want to enter the contest, it’s time to submit your contest material. Before that important event, there is a District 3350 Leadership Seminar at CP All Tower, Chaengwattana Street on Saturday, January 23, 2016. All fellow Rotarians who are leaders either in family, in business, in Rotary club, or even Rotarians who are interested in self-development to become leaders are highly recommended to attend this seminar. The registration fee is only 500 Baht. (This price already includes lunch and 2 coffee breaks.) Moreover, there is special prize for any club that has more than 3 members attended the seminar.
