ประธานโรตารสากล ป 2558-59

There was once a strong young man who was offered a job as a woodcutter. He set about his task with energy: The first week, he turned 18 trees into firewood. The second week, he worked just as hard, but was surprised to find he had chopped only 11 trees. The third week, despite working nonstop from morning till night, the number was six, and he went despairingly to the foreman to offer his resignation. “I am losing my strength. I can no longer cut as many trees as I once could.” The foreman looked at the young man, who seemed to him in fine health. “Have you thought of sharpening your ax?” he asked. “Sharpen my ax? Who has time to sharpen an ax?” the young man asked indignantly. “I have been too busy chopping wood!” When we aren’t making the kind of progress we feel we should be making, the natural response is to redouble our efforts. Sometimes, though, the better response is not to work harder, but to work smarter. Look at your tools. Analyze your processes. Are you directing your resources in the most effective ways? Or are you pouring all your strength into chopping wood with a dull ax? For the last 20 years, we have relentlessly beaten the drum of membership in Rotary. We set goals and launch campaigns, all focused on bringing in more and more members. And yet, our overall numbers remain the same. It is time to sharpen our tools. Instead of focusing on the question, “How can we bring more members into Rotary?” we should be asking ourselves, “How can we add more value to Rotary membership, so that more will join and fewer will leave?” One way we are doing that is with the new Rotary Global Rewards program, which launched in July. This innovative program allows Rotarians to connect with, and receive discounts and concessions from, businesses and service providers around the world. Individual Rotarians may submit their own business to be included alongside those with which Rotary has already negotiated relationships; the most appropriate offers will be added to the listings. We have also created the option of allowing businesses to return a percentage of their profit on each transaction to our Rotary Foundation, and several companies have already been locked into this part of the scheme. Each month we will update the list with additional offers that we may receive. I urge all of you to try it out by signing up on My Rotary at Rotary.org now. The more Rotarians participate, the stronger, and more beneficial, the program will be. Much more than another loyalty program, Rotary Global Rewards is a new way to benefit from being a Rotarian, and being part of the Rotary network. It is another way to combine business and service. And it is yet another way to add value to Rotary membership. We cannot forget that our potential members will be asking themselves, “What’s in it for me?” We need to demonstrate the value of Rotary by showing that becoming a Rotarian will enrich their lives, as it has ours.

Dear Fellow Rotarians, September is the month of Basic Education and Literacy. Statistics collected by Rotary shows there are 57 million children who do not have access to schools and more than 700 million adults who can neither read nor write. Two third of these are female. Rotary thus gives great importance to basic education and literacy classifying it as one of the six areas of focus and offers contributing funds for such development projects. I would like all club presidents to have activities relating to education and you could invite speakers in the field of education to talk at your regular club meeting, or you can hold activities with the school you are sponsoring. For close to two months I have been making official district governor visit to clubs. As at 31 August, I have visited 34 clubs. I do not feel tired at all, instead I feel revitalized as at every club I get a great reception with friendliness and warm fellowship. Every club has promised to increase members (which they did), contribute to The Rotary Foundation, add service activities to their communities and invite people to participate in Rotary. In two months, contributions to TRF in Annual Fund have reached $305,039.85, Permanent Fund $36,000.00, Polio Plus $1,500.00 and Restricted Fund for Global Grant $19,943.00 This is an encouraging trend as every club understands the role of TRF and has donated so that we will together ‘Be a Gift to the World’. Let’s Build Stronger Communities through Literacy Projects as a Gift to the World By RID Dr. Saowalak Rattanavich Today’s serious global issues are often caused by poverty and conflicts. Poverty directly affects the quality of life. We are not sufficiently aware of the fact that illiteracy is a prime cause for poverty. People who are unable to read and write lack the basic prerequisites for communication and the development of their intelligence and skills. They do not advance in life and cannot earn a decent living for themselves and their dependents. They are not at peace in & with our world, and this leads to structural conflicts. Howard Gardner, a well-known educational psychologist and researcher from Harvard University, gave a definition of intelligence, briefly summarized as “the ability of reasonably solving a problem”. Illiterates are often classified as people lacking intelligence and – as a result – being a cause of social unrest. Their vocational skill level is usually very low. They are often unemployed and the poorest in their society. They are often victims of abuse, such as criminality and the ruthless exploitation of their ignorance. Illiteracy thus means social inequality resulting in conflicts and violence in their struggle for survival. Peace, therefore, is only a dream for them. A long-term solution is to become literate. This enables critical thinking and seeking knowledge on their own. It is a life-long investment to improve the quality of life for themselves, their family, their community and their society. Literacy enables essential vocational development and other aspects of sustainable progress. The purpose of basic education, or “Education for all”, is to make people literate, and by doing so develop their ethical and critical skills, their ability to thinking and reasoning intelligently; in short: to permanently improve their self-consciousness. Literacy provides significant opportunities to improve their quality of life, in dignity and with integrity. Promoting basic education and literacy is one of the six areas of focus of Rotary International. These focus areas stimulate Rotarians worldwide to be aware of & appreciate the value of sustainable humanitarian development. There are several types of literacy projects as they depend on the needs of the community. There are 4 types of basic education programs: 1) Formal education, such as for school students at different levels; 2) Informal education, such as for illiterate adults and street children; 3) Special education, such as for the disabled, the blind, the deaf and the autistic; and 4) Special education for ethnic minorities, such as for hill tribe people, and for immigrants who are struggling for survival and seek to earn a living.

The key principle of a sustainable literacy campaign is to provide people techniques to read and write properly, in combination with creating awareness and appreciation for reading and writing as a prime tool for further development to earn a living for themselves and their dependents. Specific literacy project requirements differ per target group. The project plan must define the specific aims for the target group, the techniques to be used, the duration of the education, and the verification and evaluation of results. Most importantly, the outcome must be sustainable when the project is completed. A basic ingredient for sustainability is setting up a local “train the trainer” program for key teachers so that they can train others. A good example of the best practices for this is a program used successfully in more than 10 countries, the “Concentrated Language Encounter (CLE) Rotary Lighthouse Literacy Project”. CLE delivers long-term achievements in reading and writing skills for various illiterate groups. Based on only 5 hours of education per week, CLE project outcomes show that every group achieved literacy within 3 months for native-language students and within 6 months for non-native language students. (Anyone interested, please read more in Rattanavich, Saowalak (July, 2015), Concentrated Language Encounter Approach in Practice for Global Teaching of Literacy: Lighthouse Strategy Implementation. Journal of International Education Studies, Vol 8, No 7, pp 21-37, or on-line at http://www.ccsenet.org/journal/index.php/ies/article/view/50154) Other examples of literacy projects are to provide text books or supplementary books, such as books on specialized subjects or dictionaries; the training of librarians; setting up libraries in schools or communities; the promotion of reading by storytelling; role-playing based on texts; recorded reading for the blind; teaching sign-language to the deaf, and so on. Such projects will only succeed when the target group has previously received basic education in reading and writing, or when the activity is part of a larger project that starts with this basic education. The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International has a policy to promote sustainable literacy projects for all types of target groups through various grants. Any Rotarian interested in literacy projects, please contact the “Literacy Rotarian Action Group committee“ that has experts and experienced Rotarians from all over the world working with literacy projects. Let’s build stronger communities by providing literacy projects for a better life as a “gift to the world” from Rotarians!

September is Rotary's theme month for Basic Education and Literacy.

สนับสนุนการจัดพมพ โดย

Why is this education and literacy an area of focus while it is already a regulation for all Thai to complete basic education sufficient to become literate? The answer lies in advance technology nowadays distracting children from reading books and thoroughly discovering true knowledge. What kids today are doing are searching via internet search engine then copy the content and paste to their homework without truly understanding it. Those children lacking the ability to read will grow up missing imagination nor creativity, let alone spelling words right in their texting. To cope with this problem, we must substitute artificial electronically toys with true way of learning by reading books. Collaboration between school and parents must play major role in bringing students to sit and read voluntarily. They must be inspired to give their heart for reading, any kind of books they like. Once they start to open their heart for reading, they will be open to read any kind of books. May the month of Basic Education and Literacy be the opportunity for all Rotary clubs to prompt activities promoting book reading among the children, so that our new generation people will become smart adults in the future.

“ROTARY – A VIEW FROM OUTSIDERS” Dr.Sumet Sangnimnuan

Not long ago, I was invited to speak at the new president’s first weekly meeting of the Rotary Club of Buengkum on the topic of “Rotary – A View from Outsiders”. There were members from other Rotary clubs attending. I took the opportunity after greetings, saying that I felt honoured and delighted to have come to meet with Rotarians. Someone used to say: “With anyone – if we met, get to know one another and help make each other’s lives better; that considers a life’s fortune” I think it is a fortune of my life to have met all Rotarians and it makes my life more meaningful, because I have come to meet people with purpose in life, especially the purpose of goodness. The topic I was invited to speak is “Rotary – A View from Outsiders”. From the given topic, I felt a little confused; because I think I can be both an “insider” and an “outsider”. I say I am an “outsider”, because I am not a member of a Rotary club. However, I also say I am “not an outsider”, because I am very familiar with Rotary as I have an elder sister who is a member of Rotary. She is the new President of the Rotary Club of Buengkum, Dr. Aree Sotthibandhu. About Dr. Aree or nicknamed “P’Ta”, whenever I visited her at home or other places, she always mentioned about Rotary, saying about how great Rotary is. She most often mentioned how lucky she is to be in a good club, meeting good people, doing good deeds, never feel lonely, always full of fun and happiness. Particularly after many years of retirement, she is now at the age of 79; to stay home like an old lady would be dejected. With Rotary, she is revived with strength, energy, cheerfulness and freshness. Dr. Aree or P’Ta stated that Rotary has “charm”. All people who come together come with “goodwill” to create great companionship regardless of the diversity in classifications. It is really “Be a Gift to the World”. Speaking of being a “gift”, P’Ta said that when she went to a seminar as a President-elect to prepare to be the new club president, they put names into a present box and then picked them up – stating that whoever got selected is also a gift that Rotary International gives to Rotary Districts, and Rotary Districts give to different Rotary clubs, including Rotary Club of Buengkum as well. P’Ta said that on that day she felt excited and very proud to have received such honour. Coming back to talk about Rotary, although I am not a member, but have said that I am quite fond with it. In 2002 when I was the Vice Governor of Phichit province, I was close with a Phichit Provincial PR coordinator. He is a member of Rotary club of Phichit and often invited me to go for a meal at the weekly meetings. The meeting room, which is also a dining room, has a sign saying, “Stay Well, Good Appetite, Helping Society”. At a glance, Rotary Club of Phichit looks to be the same as the sign stated, because most of the members are businesspersons, having good lives and wealth, come together for a meal and fellowship. All food ordered are good and “fantastically” delicious. Most importantly, Rotary Club of Phichit helped the society in all matters. There is no denial in whichever matters the province requested, and also helped with strength, mind and financial support.

In 2003, I moved to be Vice Governor of Pitsanulok Province. Many Rotary clubs there joined hands to good and help the society especially the poor and disabled. I was once invited to participate in the handover presentations of bicycles to students and wheelchairs to the disabled as well as other celebrations. In 2004, I moved to be Vice Governor of Nongbualamphu Province. Due to that I studied in the 47th Class of Diploma in National Defence Course, I did not really have a chance to participate in Rotary Club of Nongbualamphu’s activities. In 2006, I moved to be Vice Governor of Angthong Province. I had chances to participate in different activities of the Rotary Club of Angthong many times and had been a guest speaker too. In 2009, I moved to be the Governor of Chiang Rai Province. Due to that Chiang Rai is a big province, so there are many Rotary clubs. I was invited to join activities and events which I would attend if I was not occupied by other businesses. About Rotary, I have to inform that not many outsiders know what it is. Some see the word “Rotary” and assume to be “Lottery” due to their similar homonym. Nevertheless, the important thing that Rotarians should do is publicize to other people, for them to know and understand what Rotary is, what it does and how it does – so that they would join and support us. I then stated further that Rotary has an interesting motto of “Service Above Self”, which is done through Club Service, Vocational Service, Community Service and International Service. At this point, sometimes we had done so much but nobody knows. Therefore, we need to do public relations in every way possible, because another principle of Rotary is “The Future of Rotary Is in Your Hands”. Nonetheless, I would like to congratulate all Rotarians, because being a member of Rotary is a good thing in life, as Ron D. Burton, 2013-2014 Rotary International President said “Engage Rotary, Change Lives” The question is how do we “change lives”? The answer is that we have to “help oneself, help people and help communities”; especially helping others is a beauty of life. As such, I would like to compliment all Rotarians that you are lucky to have a chance to do goods to others because “Hearts are happiest when they are dancing to other people”. Another good thing for Rotarians is to get together in Rotary clubs, because we will have lots of friends and they are good friends from different professions. Having friends is a good thing in life. Our King wrote in his book “36 Life Maps of Dad” – one of them states that: “New friend is a gift we give to ourselves; old friends are gems that will increase in value everyday”. Hence, I would like to congratulate all Rotarians once again that have good friends, both new and old Rotary friends, because: “Friends are like stars on the sky – although we do not always see them, but we know that on the sky still have stars”.

Public Image

Pertaining to the occasion of D.3350 Seminar on Public Relations, where PDG.Rajindar Singh has given speech on "Rotary Public Image" with content worth understanding by all Rotarians , this is the second part.

VOICE

Rotary’s voice is how we write and talk about the organization in all of our communications, from emails to presentations, both to Rotary members and those unfamiliar with Rotary. We have identified four attributes that, taken together, make us unique. • The first attribute of our voice is smart. We see challenges from different angles applying our expertise to solve social issues. We are insightful and discerning. We are knowledgeable but not arrogant. • The second attribute is compassionate. We have a heightened emotional understanding of the people we’re trying to help. Tackling the world’s toughest challenges requires empathy. We champion real people and tell stories that are relatable and universal. We are sincere but not sentimental. • The third attribute is persevering. No one can doubt our determination and drive. • The fourth voice attribute is inspiring. This reflects our ability to motivate others to act by conveying hope, enthusiasm, and passion. Our voice gives us a fresh way of talking about our organization—and living the Rotary experience. Incorporating the four voice attributes into our Rotary experience will inspire and motivate Rotarians…and others who want to connect with us.

CONSISTENT MESSAGE Think about the impact of this on your club…and how you tell your story in your local community. Consider that when every Rotary club builds messages around our core…we not only tell a compelling story…we tell our story with greater clarity and consistency. The strength of this is obvious. In this example event flyer we ask our community to…TAKE ACTION. We speak in a conversational tone…our authentic voice. One-to-one communication. We AVOID “ROTARY SPEAK.” A fellow Rotarian told me a story recently. She was at dinner and an acquaintance asked her what she was doing at Rotary these days. She told me that she began to say she was, “working with a fellow DGE on a RYLA project.” Her friend said, “What are you talking about? And she realized that when we use Rotary speak, people don’t understand us. When Rotary clubs and members around the world speak with one authentic voice about what we do…and the impact we have in our communities… the power to improve our image is tremendous. ADOPTION OF ROTARY VISUAL IDENTITY AND VOICE 1. Ensure 66% of clubs adopt the visual identity and voice in online presence, print collateral, electronic communications, brochures, promotional materials, etc. 2. Identify clubs with members who are brand supporters and who have already successfully implemented the visual identity and voice to help train and educate other Rotarians and/or clubs. 3. Hold trainings to educate and inspire individuals at the district level to become brand supporters. COMMUNICATION STRATEGIES Traditional Media Newspapers TV & Radio

Magazines Billboards

LOCAL MEDIA PLACEMENT 1. Secure at least 30 unique media placements per district per year covering the following topics: • Service projects • Highlights of people or organizations that have benefited from local Rotary clubs • Local events/fundraising efforts • Polio eradication or six areas of focus • Social connections/networking opportunities 2. Identify Rotarians who have successfully secured media placements. 3. Conduct trainings, to educate and inspire Rotarians.

WEBSITE & SOCIAL MEDIA WEBSITE Today, most people turn to the Internet when looking for information. It is essential that Clubs and Districts have websites that engage both Rotarians and non-Rotarians: Is contact information well placed? Is it free of Rotary jargon? An effective website is current – nobody wants to rely on information that hasn’t been updated in months! It should have engaging images. Another idea to increase engagement: maybe the website lists not only the club’s event calendar but other important local community dates, possibly with links to their websites. The most important aspect is that a website should be easily navigated by both Rotarians and non-Rotarians. Ideas.rotary.org Ideas is Rotary’s crowdsourcing platform. Club officers can add projects in need of funding, project partners, or in-kind donations to Ideas. Rotary Showcase Showcase is connected to Rotary Club Central. When a club adds a project to Rotary Club Central, they have the option to add it to showcase as well. • Cover photo should appeal to nonmembers • Highlight key posts and include a call to action DIGITAL / SOCIAL ENGAGEMENT Increase the usage of Digital / Social Media by Clubs Number of Clubs with Websites, Facebook and other Social Media that are using the new Visual Identity and Voice WORD OF MOUTH Why we need word-of-mouth strategy. • Emotional Connections • Share your Experiences Let’s imagine a scenario: it’s Saturday night and you are thinking about going out to dinner. How do you decide where to go? Maybe you go online and search for restaurants, look at the top search results websites. If the website had really easy directions and some snazzy pictures but no menu, would you try it? What if a friend had recommended it? Studies show that Word of Mouth Marketing is more impactful than online and traditional advertising, and that people are still more likely to rely on a friend’s opinion than anything else. Emotional connections to products, services or experiences are conveyed when you talk about them. This applies to all areas of our lives, from movies to dentists to volunteer opportunities – Rotary included. We know and are excited by what our club is doing, why not talk about it? CONCLUSION CONSISTENT MESSAGE = AUTHENTIC VOICE The world’s top brands maintain balance. Rotary, too, must maintain balance…if our brand—if Rotary—is to be true. When we all work in harmony…1.2 million members…34,000 clubs…speaking with the one voice…using a consistent look…telling a compelling story…WE SPEAK WITH AUTHENTICITY. The result: we improve the world’s understanding of our organization. In the end, the simplest tool in the arsenal is your pride in being a part of a Rotary club. Remember that enthusiasm is contagious: by simply sharing your excitement about your club and its projects you will be helping to enhance and increase awareness of Rotary and all we do together. What can you do to help starting today? We know that one Rotarian can change a community. Connect more than a million, and we can change the world. So when you get back home…get out there and share your passion for Rotary. You probably know someone who would be a great addition to your team on your service project…or someone who has the qualities that would make them a great new Rotarian. Tap them on the shoulder and tell them the feeling you get from your Rotary work. Tell them about how you and your fellow Rotarians are changing the world. Be a Rotary champion. Dear Fellow Rotarians, Since September is the Basic Education and Literacy month, the most suitable main article for this District Governor Newsletter should not be written by anyone else besides the Rotary International Director, Dr.Saowalak Rattanavich, an Associate professor at the Faculty of Education, Srinakharinwirot University. She also has served as Host area Coordinator committee for Rotary Peace and Conict Center at Chulalongkorn University and Vice Chair of the Literacy Rotarian Action Group. I’ve asked her for an article and she kindly sent us a spectacular story, which is published on page 4-7. I’d like to introduce another article besides the regular column from each committee chair. It’s the opinion of Non-Rotarian of how he looks at our Rotary organization. Many of you may have read literature of Dr.Sumeth Saengnimnuan, Former Chiang Rai Provincial Governor. After his retirement, he was invited by his elder sister to become a new member during her Presidency. If you would like to know who she is and which Rotary club she belongs to, let’s ďŹ nd out the answers inside. One more impressive story to share is when I went on a business trip to Phuket, District 3330, last month. Although I did not know any Rotarians in that area but I had enough time to attend the meeting with the Rotary Club on either Thursday or Friday. Therefore, I used Social Media by asking question on the Facebook. Eventually, without knowing each other before, PDG.Thiansak Piyathamsiri and CP.Prajuab Maipanich from RC.Promthep Phuket kindly picked me up and took me to Phuket Merlin Hotel to attend the weekly meeting hosted by RC.Tongkah, which is the biggest club among the nine Rotary clubs in Phuket. Once again, I’d like to express my sincerest thanks for their warm hospitality. I also exchanged club banner with RC.Tongkah and also gave it to RC.Promthep Phuket, the latest chartered club in that province. Therefore, I would like to encourage the 111th Club Presidents and all fellow Rotarians to visit Rotary Clubs in other District whenever you have an opportunity because doing so will give you a deeper understanding with the word Yours in Rotary. PP.Trong Sangswangwatana RC. of Bangkok Suwanabhum
