Duet of the Eli's by Irene Jumbo

This shawl starts with short rows. Then the border is added.

Please read the instructions carefully. There is a written and a charted part. Yarn recommendation: This shawl can be knitted with any yarn, but too variegated colors will “swallow” the pattern of the border. 400 m/437 yds should be enough. Needles: Suitable for the yarn chosen. Notions: 2 stitch markers. Loosely cast on 275 stitches. R 1: * K1, P1 *. Repeat from * to * to end of row. R 2: * P1, K1 *. Repeat from * to * to end of row. R 3: * K1, P1 *. Repeat from * to * to end of row. R 4: * P1, K1 *. Repeat from * to * to 5 st before end of row. Turn. R 5: DS, * K1, P1 *. Repeat from * to * to 5 st before end of row. Turn. R 6: DS, * K1, P1 *. Repeat from * to * to 5 st before DS. Turn. R 7: DS, * K1, P1 *. Repeat from * to * to 5 st before DS. Turn. R 8: DS, * K1, P1 *. Repeat from * to * to 5 st before DS. Turn. R 9: DS, * K1, P1 *. Repeat from * to * to 5 st before DS. Turn. R 10: DS, * K1, P1 *. Repeat fom * to * to 5 st before DS. Turn. DS = Double stitch is worked as follows: Place a yarn over on the right needle. Lift one st from the left needle to the right. Then pull tight on the working yarn until it seems that you have two st on the right needle. The DS is worked this way to avoid holes in the knitting at the turn.

From row 11 on: Stockinette st and “small” pattern. The pattern is counted from the center stitch outward. DS, Knit, work “small” pattern, continue to knit to 5 st before DM. Turn. R 12: DM, Purl to 5 st before DM. Turn. R 13: DM, Knit, “small pattern”, Knit to 5 st before DM. Turn. Continue in this manner until 5 stitches remain.
