Welcome to the 50th Carbondale Mountain Fair

Bienvenides a la 50° Mountain Fair de Carbondale

“From one year of social distancing to 50 years of socializing”

“Desde un año de distanciamiento social hasta 50 años socializando”

This enduring gathering of community set the stage for the Carbondale we know today. A place where we may not always agree but we always come together around the Fair and make it happen. Where we respect our differences and embrace our common goals. As Barb Bush is quoted,”we’ve been looking for the unicorns for years..” because Carbondale does have a touch of magic beneath the impressive gaze of Mount Sopris. I have been steeped in story, myth and legend this past year, looking for the tidbits that make us who we are today. Ultimately it is the people that choose to live here that fuels the spirit of Carbondale. That started with the Utes and we will always honor them and the land they tended. Many of the folks who started the Fair are still part of it 50 years later, along with friends, family and several new generations. There are far too many to thank individually, but I urge all to learn about, and reflect on, this history as it is up to us to ensure that this tradition carries on. We need to tend to our earth as we tend to our children and always make time for this gathering as it is an important ritual that instills inclusion, volunteerism, collaboration and creativity. This is the ethos of who we are. So when the drums start beating in Sopris Park, it’s time to come together, drop any judgment and celebrate together. Thanks for being part of it!

The CCD is going strong! The Carbondale Creative District has been a strong part of Carbondale for the last six years. The district has solidified Carbondale’s reputation as a place that fosters creativity, economy, collaboration and equity. The CCD works closely with government, business, our Chamber and Tourism, artists, healers, farmers, chefs, performers, designers and more, to keep Carbondale safe, vibrant and a place we all can live. Unfortunately it is harder to do in this region due to the high cost of living. Our diversity is threatened. It will take all of us coming together to find a solution and that is why we will need so many creatives at that table. It is going to take thinking outside the box, financial support, lots of listening and learning, and dedicated time to find solutions for the problems facing us in the 21st century. The CCD is dedicated to ensuring a future that keeps Carbondale authentic, unique and accessible. Check out our web page at carbondalecreativedistrict.com. You can search the district and discover over 250 businesses and artists in the area, find the latest news and happenings and meet the folks that make it happen creatively in the region.

This Fair is dedicated to Robin Sutherland ... and all those who gave of time and spirit Written by John Colson The late, nationally recognized concert pianist Robin Sutherland was in one sense a true son of the Carbondale Mountain Fair, now celebrating its 50th year. Born John Robin Sutherland in 1951 (he legally dropped the “John” later in life), he was raised in Greeley, Colorado. Sutherland was a child musical prodigy starting from the age of four years and, thanks to a fortuitous combination of circumstances, ended up living, teaching and learning in the Roaring Fork Valley in the early 1970s, the era when the Mountain Fair was born. The woman credited with being the main force behind creation of the Fair, Laurie Loeb of Carbondale, befriended Sutherland that year and remembered recently that he was peripherally involved in Fair activities starting in 1972, though she could not recall exactly what he did in those early years. By 1975, however, Sutherland's growing fame as a gifted classical pianist (he was named principal keyboardist for the San Francisco Symphony in 1974) propelled him onto the makeshift stage of that year's Fair, playing a piece the title of which unfortunately has been lost to time. Several years later, after Loeb had met and married another of the Roaring Fork Valley's long time musical personalities, composer and conductor Ray Adams, the two men came up with a formal, if somewhat irreverent connection to the annual Fair.

REAL ESTATE FOR YOU!

Sutherland and Adams (with a changing crew of helpers, including yours truly) took on the nighttime security chore for the Fair and, in the early 1980s, dubbed themselves “The A Team,” filching the name from a television series that ran from 1983-1987 (ultimately the A-Team morphed into today's Peace Patrol.) With official sanction from the Fair organizers, they attached themselves to the Fair’s weekend security squad, which was in charge of keeping the peace and watching over the many booths that lined Sopris Park. Sutherland, who died last year, loved Carbondale and immensely enjoyed coming to the Fair when he could, and it is a fitting tribute to his devotion to this community that this year's Carbondale Mountain Fair is dedicated to his memory.

Known for putting on fabulous events, here are a few you should save the date for: The Garden Music Concert Series is deigned to celebrate the rich diversity of artistic styles and cultural backgrounds in our place and time. Each movement of this Mozart masterpiece will be paired up with a reading inspired by nature. August 18-19 “Death of the Pugilist” The Orchard Gathering Center, Carbondale An experimental ensemble piece based on contemporary American novelist Daniel Mason’s story of the same name. A narrator tells the story in its unedited entirety and five musicians weave the emotional tapestry with music. From the quayside docks, to taverns of low-repute, and the squalor of family life in the working class, the narrative follows a young man as he comes of age in a roughand-tumble profession, and an actual boxing event that took place in the 1800’s England. Settling on modern, minimalistic music to emphasize the objectiveness of the story teller, Bach as the point/counterpoint inherent in boxing, and Irish folk music to set the tone for the time period, the production creates something greater than the whole of its parts, a moving, emotionally rapt work that is truly unique. Performers: Jem Moore (narrator & musician) MinTze Wu (violin), Eric Thorin (musician), Joy Adams (musician), Blayne Chastain (musician). History in the Making, 50 Years and Counting! photos and historical artifacts around the Fair and now this story will live on and grow. The gathering started in 1972 with Laurie Loeb leading the charge. She wasn’t alone. People like Richie Marks, Wick Moses, Peggy DiVilbiss, Rick Lawrence, Barb Bush and many more, came together to make those first fairs happen. The funny thing is, 50 years later, many of those same people are still involved. That’s one of the things that makes this Fair so special. It is built upon volunteerism, handing down the responsibilities from generation to generation, young and old working and celebrating together and, most of all, taking time to gather to remember who we are and what is important to us as a community. When the Fair started, the streets of Carbondale were not paved, empty lots were many and no swimming pool sat in Sopris Park. Mary Ferguson, on her 90’s KDNK radio show, This I Remember, talks of the astounding year there were 44 cars parked on the street because of the Fair. Thanks to The Carbondale Historical Society, Carbondale Arts, Terry Glasenapp, KDNK and Independent Radio Producer, Luke Nestler. History is really our story. The tale of the Mountain Fair has many voices. A team of people have collected stories,

Carbondale Arts (then known as Carbondale Council on Arts and Humanities), formed in 1974 because of the success of the this event. Ethel Saunders won the first Pie Contest in 1976. Sheri Draper got the Oasis going in 1982 and the permanent stage was built in 1984. Throughout the years there has been lots of music, performances

Mountain Fair Sustainability

In commemoration of the 50th Mountain Fair, the locally-owned EverGreen ZeroWaste will be taking a larger role in helping Mountain Fair to responsibly divert waste from the local landfills. The compost from the Fair will be processed less than 20 miles away at the Pitkin County Compost Center. This commercial-scale operation allows the materials to be broken down into usable soil for our valley, once again completing the carbon cycle of life. That being said, reuse is still the key to reducing our waste and lowering our environmental fair-print! If we love our Mother Earth, it is now time for all of us to take personal responsibility in keeping her healthy. REDUCING and REUSING are important steps toward a zero-waste culture, while composting and recycling help, they are secondary. A BIG THANK-YOU to Evergreen Zero Waste for supporting our Green Team efforts. How can we all do this at Mountain Fair? Simply by using fewer single-use, disposable cups, plates and utensils. You can accomplish this by being aware of a few Green Team operations:

food waste 1-10 years

how long does it take to decompose? recycle right!

synthetic clothing 30-40 years

aluminum can 80-100 years batteries 100 years rubber tires 2,000 years

glass bottles 1,000,000+ years

REUSE by bringing your own water bottles, plates and utensils to the Fair; take them home and wash them. It’s like camping! Due to COVID we cannot reuse cups in the cantina. We are heartbroken about this but want everyone to be healthy. • We do not sell bottled water at the Fair and we have several WATER STATIONS full of clean mountain water marked with red and white water signs. Please bring your own reusable container and keep it with you. • If you are finished with your program, please promote REUSE by leaving it at the Entrance/Exits for others to use. COMPOSTING & RECYCLING are the next best personal steps at the Fair. Please be part of this solution, not the problem, by assisting the volunteer-powered Green Team with proper sorting at the waste stations.

• Sort your waste in the wellmarked containers at our waste stations where you will find friendly volunteers. Just about anything you purchase from a food vendor goes in the green compost bins. All food scraps, utensils, plates, bowls, cups and paper products are compostable.

• ALL beer cups are COMPOSTABLE! We thank our zero-waste community partners: Evergreen Zero Waste, Pitkin County Compost Facility, Town of Carbondale, the Carbondale Environmental Board and YOU for being part of the Green Team!

Members are our heart and soul and we show our appreciation year round. Please remember too, your membership helps us provide a FREE Fair, as well as so many great events, high-caliber gallery exhibitions and arts education programs.

Help a Longtime Local Bill Morrow has been part of the Mountain Fair for many years. He is an incredible sculptor with a life’s amount of work. His dream is to get the work out there as he has many medical bills and family to leave his legacy to. Bill is a Colorado native born at home in Rifle Colorado in 1945. He spent 4 years in the Navy and after two tours in Vietnam came back to his hometown to get married and start a family. He attended Colorado Mountain College studying Chemistry, Physics and Math with a 4.0 while working as a welder and equipment operator. In 1984 Bill was instrumental in starting Art on the Corner in Grand Junction setting 30 pieces of sculpture on Main Street. He found this work deeply pleasing to his heart and continued creating sculpture and custom projects. The remaining pieces have been gathered here in town for an auction of his work this fall. Every piece tells a unique story and he is hard to miss. Introduce yourself if you don’t already know him. Bill was the Fair electrician for many years. Lets help him by getting this first auction piece sold. Find the bid sheet at our Silent Auction tent! Name of the Piece: Armor for a maiden Material: Copper Price: $2250

Arts Through It All Shopping at Mountain Fair helps the artists and makers that show their wares here, however you can support artists all year long. The Roaring Fork Valley has many organizations that provide resources and ways for you to support locally. Galleries, theaters and music venues are great ways to show your love for the performing arts, especially after the long shut down from the pandemic. Also, Farmers Markets host many individual makers. Here are a few places you can support Arts Through It All: Carbondale Arts + The R2 Gallery Located inside The Launchpad, Carbondale Arts hosts R2 Gallery and The Artique Gift Shop, where local and regional artists and goods are featured year-round. The holiday market is THE place to shop during the holidays. carbondalearts.com

The Carbondale Clay Center A great place to purchase ceramic functional wares all year long. The gallery also brings in specialty ceramic arts and collaborations. carbondaleclay.org The Art Base Located in Basalt, their gallery exhibitions and gift shop shine beautifully in their new space downtown. Classes are another way to learn and support and Art Base is bountiful in these. theartbase.org The Redstone Art Gallery Redstone is rich in local and regional arts. Paintings, functional art and ceramics can all be found here, but keep rolling down the boulevard and you will discover lots of creativity. redstoneart.com

The Redstone Art Foundation Hosting the popular Labor Day Art Show and other exhibitions throughout the year. redstoneartfoundation.org Glenwood Springs Arts Council A hub of information on ways to support artists of all kinds. glenwoodarts.org Anderson Ranch One of the best gift shops in the valley. July 29 Mozart Divertimento at Thompson House ¦ 6pm

Meander into an 18th century garden, with elegant music amongst the fragrance. Each movement of this Mozart masterpiece will be paired up with a reading inspired by nature. Plein-air artists will also make special appearances to share their expression through palettes.

August 18 & 19

Death of the Pugilist at The Orchard ¦ 6pm

Narration of Daniel Mason s story accompanied by a musical ensemble, to tell the story of a rough-and-tumble profession. Modern, minimalistic music by Bach and Irish folk music set the tone for the time period. This a moving, and emotionally rapt piece that is truly unique. Features THE RAINBOW LOUNGE The Rainbow Lounge, is a “safe’’ space to chill, enjoy and learn about the organizations that work with our LGBTQ communities and the awesome people that make it happen. Costumes, watermelon, story hours and more can be found here. Open to ALL people of ANY age, color and persuasion!

VACCINATION CLINIC

There was a time when we were worried we wouldn’t be able to have this milestone event. Thankfully vaccinations have become accessible, allowing us to safely gather for our beloved Mountain Fair. In an effort to keep everyone in the community safe we ask that you respect your fellow fairgoer by keeping clean hands, staying home if you’re not feeling well, and allowing extra space whenever possible. Should it feel appropriate for you there will be a vaccination clinic on Saturday, July 24th from 11am 7pm on 7th St. (near the pool). They will be offering Pfizer for anyone 12 and older as well as Johnson & Johnson for those 18 and older. Walk-ups are available, or appointments can be made ahead of time. Scan the QR code to make a reservation.
