2016 - 2017 SEASON
THE LAB THEATRE
CLOUD 9 By Caryl Churchill
From the Dean’s Desk Welcome to the 2016/17 Theatre Season at Florida State University. For 43 years, the School of Theatre at FSU has brought the thrill of live theatre to Tallahassee audiences, and if you have been with us before, you understand why our program has become one of the most renowned in the nation. You have seen students perform on this stage that went on to earn Broadway roles and others who now hold important leadership positions within the theatre community. Each and every one of our student actors – past and present – gain experience here at FSU that prepares them for a multitude of careers in theatre and beyond, and while the faculty and staff serve as their educators and mentors, your support by being here and playing the role of their audience, is equally important. I thank you for being a part of our theatre community and hope that you are enlightened and entertained by our performance today.
Peter Weishar Dean, College of Fine Arts
From the School of Theatre’s Executive Director
We at the School of Theatre are excited about the upcoming season and invite you to become a part of our journey. We are committed to a learning environment that builds on our rich past as it enters a new year – encouraging excellence, imagination, artistry, and leadership to empower our students to create the theatre of the future. This year at the School of Theatre, we hope that you will take great pleasure in exploring the bounty of our upcoming season. Together, we will have the opportunity to investigate what kinds of armor we put on in hopes of surviving the world around us. How being ourselves can be the greatest gift we can give and how in the end, love really does conquer all. Our ability to present theatre in meaningful ways depends on the deep and continued generosity of YOU – our patrons, donors, and community. It is fitting to take this moment to thank each of you for your varied and deep, individual connections and financial contributions to the School of Theatre. Thank you so much for being part of the arts in Tallahassee and especially with us here at the School of Theatre. We have prepared a feast and are pleased to welcome you, our guests. The curtain is going up and you will not want to miss a moment.

A Note from the Director, Sarah Lucas I wish that I could say that Cloud 9 was ahead of its time. However, the issues explored in this show, which premiered at Dartington College of Arts in 1979, are arguably more relevant today than they were when the play first debuted. Notions concerning freedom and restriction inhabit our vocabularies as universally understood concepts, perhaps loosely associated in our minds with patriotic ideals or permissible behaviors. How often do we as individuals truly examine the restraints placed on our own journeys of self-acceptance? Love, yet another word compacted with collective ambiguity, faces the challenges of social constriction on a variety of levels. Love is too often defined and regulated by gender, race, age, economic status, political association, and religious beliefs, to ever truly be considered an act of free will. We are pressured by our families, friends, religious leaders, and politicians to love within the boundaries of what is considered acceptable. We are asked to be identifiable and to categorize our appearance, our perceptions, and our feelings based on dated societal molds we call “tradition” and “morality.” We are told to be something that not everyone can be. Cloud 9 forces us to examine our own prejudices and beliefs, revealing the shackles of cultural influence that still impact us, bravely asking, what if love had no limitations?
The School of Theatre at Florida State As one of the top-tier theatre training programs in the nation, the School of Theatre at Florida State provides its students with a wide variety of theatrical and educational opportunities. The primary mission of the School of Theatre is to offer students a comprehensive education in theatre and to prepare emerging artists to enter the professional theatre industry. As a result, the School of Theatre provides both student artists and community audience members a diverse array of productions that explore the spectrum of our shared humanity. Founded in 1973 under the vision and leadership of then-Dean Richard G. Fallon, the School of Theatre enjoys a national reputation, in large part, because of the excellence of its undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as a gifted faculty of nationally recognized professional artists/educators. The London Theatre Studies program, the chance to work side by side with guest artists and eminent scholars, as well as showcase opportunities in New York City and Los Angeles are just a few of the many reasons why students are attracted to our various professional and academic degrees from all over the United States, many foreign countries, and every county in Florida. Alumni of the program include Broadway stars Montego Glover and Leslie Flesner, television producer Steven Sears, Emmy Award-winners John Papsidera and John Brace, Broadway producers Heather Provost and Darren Bagert, Playwright and Professor Suzan Zeder, and a host of talented entertainment industry professionals. Through their creative work, research, publication, and service, School of Theatre alumni contribute to the commercial, educational, and cultural life of the citizens of Florida and the nation.
The School of Theatre at Florida State is a member of the University/Resident Theatre Association, Inc. and is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre.

Caryl Churchill, a leading English playwright, began writing for the stage in 1958. Some of her landmark plays are Top Girls, Serious Money, A Number, and Cloud 9; two new plays by Churchill premiered in 2016: Pigs and Dogs and Escaped Alone. Churchill continually experiments with dramatic forms in order to serve each project. In 2002, Churchill received an Obie Award for lifetime achievement. It is not surprising, then, that contemporary writers consistently recognize her as a major influence on their work. Sarah Daniels, author of Masterpieces, says that Churchill is to theatre as Picasso is to modern art: each creates provocative non-naturalistic forms that capture a new relation to reality. For Cloud 9, Churchill draws on techniques borrowed from Bertolt Brecht, a theorist of epic theatre. Brecht proposed new strategies to shape the audiences’ response to theatre. He wanted spectators to question the status quo. Brecht’s overarching goal was to take the familiar and make it strange in order to provoke spectators to think about the problem the play addresses. His songs are one of his major tools. In Cloud 9, Churchill also uses music to further her dramatic goals. Her songs support the action of the play and convey important information. The opening song explains Churchill’s decision to draw attention to the differences between the actors and the characters they play. The lyrics of the song offer clues to understanding the collision of meanings suggested by the juxtaposition of actor and character. Betty, played by a man, sings “I am man’s creation as you can see, and what men want is what I want to be.” Clearly, external situations have shaped Betty’s identity, just as they have shaped Joshua’s and Edward’s. This dramatic device helps us see that the play presents a story about reality, not reality itself. Both Brecht and Churchill show us that our reality, like the world of the play, is constructed – it can change. Both authors ask, who will be the agent of change? The second act begins with more change: we move to the 1970s from the Victorian age. Strangely, for the characters, only twenty-five years have passed. Social mores that the first act establishes are contested in the second. Each character still struggles to find their identity, but Churchill does not simply create a world where the passage of time means that all problems have been resolved. Instead, time passing may mean that we are freer to disclose once forbidden thoughts and feelings. Even though our understanding may not be complete, we can be conscious of how society shapes us and work to create the world we want to inhabit. As Brecht said, “Change the world: it needs it!”
