2021-2022 SEASON
WELCOME TO THE SHOW!
Brad Brock Director, School of Theatre Florida State University
Kris Salata Chair, School of Theatre Florida State University
We are thrilled to welcome you back to the School of Theatre at Florida State and to our exciting 20212022 season of plays and musicals! Each year, we present performances that build on our rich past to reflect on the now, stimulate discussion among our community, and significantly enhance our students’ education. For over 45 years, the School of Theatre has trained students not just for Broadway stages but as theatremakers, leaders, artists, and advocates for theatre across the world. None of this would be possible without our immensely dedicated faculty and staff and the generous and loyal support from members of our community. It is no wonder that with such shared effort the School of Theatre continues to be recognized as one of the top programs in the country. After the last 18 months of unprecedented challenges, we hope that you will join us for each and every production as we celebrate the incredibly talented students, faculty, and staff who have worked tirelessly to create what you see on stage. Thank you for supporting the arts and the School of Theatre at Florida State as we could not do it without you! - Brad Brock & Kris Salata

THE SCHOOL OF THEATRE AT FLORIDA STATE As one of the top-tier theatre training programs in the nation, the School of Theatre at Florida State provides its students with a wide variety of theatrical and educational opportunities. The primary mission of the School of Theatre is to offer students a comprehensive education in theatre and to prepare emerging artists to enter the professional theatre industry. As a result, the School of Theatre provides both student artists and community audience members a diverse array of productions that explore the spectrum of our shared humanity. Founded in 1973 under the vision and leadership of then-Dean Richard G. Fallon, the School of Theatre enjoys a national reputation, in large part, because of the excellence of its undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as a gifted faculty of nationally recognized professional artists and educators. The London Theatre Studies program, the chance to work side by side with guest artists and eminent scholars, as well as showcase opportunities in New York City and Los Angeles are just a few of the many reasons why students are attracted to our various professional and academic degrees from all over the United States, many foreign countries, and every county in Florida. Alumni of the program include Broadway stars Christiani Pitts, Montego Glover, and Leslie Flesner, television producer Steven Sears, Emmy Award-winners John Papsidera and John Brace, Broadway producers Heather Provost and Darren Bagert, Playwright and Professor Suzan Zeder, and a host of talented entertainment industry professionals. Through their creative work, research, publication, and service, School of Theatre alumni contribute to the commercial, educational, and cultural life of the citizens of Florida and the nation. The School of Theatre at Florida State is a member of the University/Resident Theatre Association, Inc. and is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre.

DIRECTOR'S NOTE Last Stop on Market Street is a musical that speaks to us about intergenerational understanding, homelessness, and differences in society. But it also tells us “different is not the same thing as bad.” At its heart, Last Stop On Market Street is a heart-warming musical reminder of the magic that happens when we truly seek to get to know each other as humans and look beyond what sets us apart from each other. It is in seeking and making that connection that we learn to create community. We truly sought to represent the community of theatre-makers that we have in the School of Theatre as we assembled this show. This community does not just consist of our students across different programs and concentrations but also people from Tallahassee doing work onstage and off. They have all risen to the challenges of the show and challenged themselves to live out the message of the show in our collaborations, and I am truly grateful for and proud of each one of them. We are particularly proud of welcoming back two alumni of the SoT now back as working professionals and a part of the creative team on this show — Brooke, our Choreographer, and Adam, our Musical Director. Rounding off this community are Cat on costumes, Kevin on sets and props, Todd on lights, Zach and Mel on sound. All of us along with the SoT faculty and staff welcome you all and thank you for being in community with us. May you all leave the show wanting to “serve up love” to others. - Chari Arespacochaga

PATRONS SCHOLAR SPOTLIGHT: GORDON CUNNINGHAM Gordon Cunningham is a first-year BA Theatre student from Inverness, Florida. After the wonderful theatre opportunities his high school provided, he is thrilled to get involved with theatre here at FSU. Gordon is currently understudying the role of Banquo in an adaptation of Macbeth titled The Serpent Underneath. Gordon was also run crew for Newsies back in October. So far, his favorite FSU memory has been his first in-person auditions. The energy he felt was electric, and he met a lot of incredible people that he will get to work with over the next four years. Gordon’s passion is giving people meaningful experiences through theatre. The next four years are sure to be full of exploration for how he would like to harness that passion, and he cannot wait! Getting to study theatre at FSU as a first-generation college student is surreal, and Gordon is so thankful for the generosity of the Patrons Association. The Patrons kindness is life-changing and continues to open doors for him. He wants to thank door-openers everywhere for continuing to change lives and make aspirations achievable. Gordon takes great pride in being a patron scholar!

Let’s make some Ropa Vieja! What is Ropa Vieja? Ropa vieja is a spansh term which translates to “old clothes”. This dish originated from central Spain and was brought to Cuba where the Cubans made it their own. This dish is made up of shredded beef and vegetables that resemble a heap of colorful rags , hence the name Ropa Vieja (old clothes). It is one of Cuba’s most popular and beloved dishes. So popular in fact that it’s one of the country’s designated national dishes. Grab an adult to make sure you’re safe while chopping and cooking with heat, then get started!

Discussion Questions Listed below are some questions to talk about with your family and friends after seeing Last Stop on Market Street 1.
The characters in the book are all different in different
ways. Are there some ways in which they are all the same?
2. When should we make things special for people who are different? (For example, when there is a special seat on the bus for Nana and the blind man.)
3. Why do you think Nana and CJ volunteer at the soup kitchen? Do they do it for the same reasons? Are some reasons for volunteering better than others?
4. Nana is a very positive person, always seeing the bright side of a situation. Is it possible to choose to be a positive person? If so, why and how?
5. Do people have the responsibility to help others get the things that they need? Why or why not?
6. When CJ and Nana reach the last stop on Market Street, they are headed to the soup kitchen where people are lining up to get food. Is it bad that some people have to go to a soup kitchen for food and others don’t? Why or why not?

At the Theatre... Attending Last Stop on Market Street is a special experience that you and your family will remember for a long time. Everyone in the audience is looking forward to seeing the performance just as much as you, so it’s very important to remember the rules of theatre etiquette to ensure that everyone has a fantastic experience! Going to the theatre might seem a lot like going to the movies, but there is one big difference—the actors are performing live onstage, and they can see and hear what goes on in the audience, just as you can see and hear them.
A Few Things to Remember: • Wait for the ushers to help you find your seat. Seating is very limited and you must sit in your assigned seat. • Make sure you go to the restroom before the show. Leaving your seat during the performance disrupts the actors as well as the audience, plus you miss the best parts! • The lights will dim just before the performance begins and then go dark. The lights will come back up at the end of the play. • There is no talking or whispering during the performance. This can disturb the actors onstage as well as your fellow audience members. • You are encouraged to clap, laugh, and participate during the performance. The actors love to hear applause. This shows how much you enjoyed it! • Do not leave your seat until the cast has taken their curtain call – or bow – at the end.
