THE SCHOOL OF THEATRE AT FLORIDA STATE
As one of the top-tier theatre training programs in the nation, the School of Theatre at Florida State provides its students with a wide variety of theatrical and educational opportunities. The primary mission of the School of Theatre is to offer students a comprehensive education in theatre and to prepare emerging artists to enter the professional theatre industry. As a result, the School of Theatre provides both student artists and community audience members a diverse array of productions that explore the spectrum of our shared humanity.
Founded in 1973 under the vision and leadership of then-Dean Richard G. Fallon, the School of Theatre enjoys a national reputation, in large part, because of the excellence of its undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as a gifted faculty of nationally recognized professional artists and educators. The London Theatre Studies program, the chance to work side by side with guest artists and eminent scholars, as well as showcase opportunities in New York City and Los Angeles are just a few of the many reasons why students are attracted to our various professional and academic degrees from all over the United States, many foreign countries, and every county in Florida.
Alumni of the program include Broadway stars Christiani Pitts, Montego Glover, and Leslie Flesner, television producer Steven Sears, Emmy Award-winners John Papsidera and John Brace, Broadway producers Heather Provost and Darren Bagert, Playwright and Professor Suzan Zeder, and a host of talented entertainment industry professionals. Through their creative work, research, publication, and service, School of Theatre alumni contribute to the commercial, educational, and cultural life of the citizens of Florida and the nation.
The School of Theatre at Florida State is a member of the University/Resident Theatre Association, Inc. and is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre.

DIRECTOR'S NOTE
from Director Sarah Hinzman
Among us, there are those that dream of being an innovator. This has always been true. Inventors do not accept things as they are. Their mission is to improve reality. What kind of person does it take to change what we know as reality? A person who persists in their vision no matter the cost?… An opti mist?... A “crazy” person?
Look around you. Every tangible thing you can perceive was carefully and thoughtfully invented by a person. Draw your gaze to the shape of the set, the qualities of the light, and the organization of the total experience—these are also inventions. Soon actors will arrive on stage, wearing specially designed costumes, to embody their characters with truth and authenticity. A small army of crew members sup port them by executing specific assignments that make the theatrical invention you see function properly. Theatre artists are inventors and innovators.
Every play is an invention, and The Ruby Sunrise just happens to be about the process of invention. The performance you are about to experience began with a playwright. Rinne Groff wrote a fictional story situated within historical circumstances which, in its totality, is responding to the present. It is fascinating that the present, when this play was published, was a world without the internet as we know it now, without smart phones, tablets, or streaming or apps, or any kind of social media.
Arguably, none of these would have been conceivable without the invention of television. Television would not have been possible without radio, and radio without electricity, and electricity without fire and on and on. We have experienced unprecedented innovation since this play was written and its message—its mission—is more relevant and more urgent.
The Ruby Sunrise is a story about the persistence of vision in spite of tremendous undermining forc es—forces like gender disparity, economic status, politics, power, violence, and despair. The characters have to choose what sacrifices they are willing to make for their vision—their baby—to make a difference in the world. So do we all.
At the dawn of the age of television, the venerated Edward R. Murrow mused: “For surely we shall pay for using this most powerful instrument of communication to insulate the citizenry from the hard and demanding realities which must indeed be faced if we are to survive. And mean the word survive, quite literally… This instrument can teach. It can illuminate and, yes, it can even inspire. But it can do so only to the extent that humans are determined to use it towards those ends. Otherwise, it is merely wires and lights in a box.”

PATRONS SCHOLAR SPOTLIGHT: JOS É J. MU Ñ OZ
José J. Muñoz is a Junior BFA Music Theatre Major from the Republic of Panama. He started off as a Biomedical Engineering major at FSU and then switched to pursue his real passion, theatre, in 2020. José loves dancing and enjoyed playing Romeo in Newsies in the 2021-2022 season. Other performance credits include Cinderella (Ensemble) and the upcoming production of Dragons Love Tacos (Yellow Dragon). José’s long-term goal after graduation is to become a choreographer. He wants to perform for a while so he can get the experience and then transition to a theatre choreographer.
“I want to say thank you [to the Patrons Association] from the bottom of my heart. It is hard, especially coming from another country with fewer opportunities. Every time I get financial help, as small or as big as it can be, it is a huge relief to me and my family. I thank the Patrons because of the wonderful labor they are doing, helping students who are pursuing their dreams, because let’s be honest, no one studies theatre unless you are passionate and dream of it. So more than supporting our careers, Patrons support our dreams, hopes and passions."
