From the School of Theatre’s Executive Director Our 44th year of bringing you the very best of Musicals and Dramas and showcasing students’ work on stage and off, in the shops and in the classroom. Our alumni are taking the world by storm and Playbill has once again ranked us in the top five of public university programs most represented on Broadway. Our season will focus on how we each define family, luck, fate, mischief, normal, and loyalty. Together, we will have the opportunity to investigate the definitions that we assign to these words and how our individual experiences shape their meanings. In the School of Theatre, we are committed to a learning environment that builds on our rich past as it enters a new year – encouraging excellence, imagination, artistry, and leadership to empower our students to create the theatre of the future. Our ability to present theatre in meaningful ways depends on the deep and continued generosity of YOU – our patrons, donors, and community. It is fitting to take this moment to thank each of you for your varied and deep, individual connections and financial contributions to the School of Theatre. Thank you so much for being part of the arts in Tallahassee and especially with us here at the School of Theatre.

From the Dramaturg, Laura London Waringer One of the Golden Age’s most beloved classics, Guys and Dolls is one of the first musicals about Broadway—not the theatrical Broadway of kicklines and curtain calls, but the actual thoroughfare that runs through the heart of New York City as its central, vital artery. Based on his short stories from the 1930s, Guys and Dolls is humorist Damon Runyon’s love letter to New York City. On Runyon’s Broadway, high and low converge, and sinner and saint mix and mingle as they grapple for their respective wants and needs. The stakes are high. Gamblers look for their next big jackpot to make ends meet. Missionaries seek to save souls and keep their religious outreach thriving in desperate times. Showgirls long to settle down and leave the seediness of show business behind. Written in the turmoil of the Great Depression, Runyon’s stories are not political, but instead take a romantic approach to the notion of survival at any cost. Guys and Dolls embodies both the hustle and the heart of the era, and this intersection of faith in American ideals and the drive for bigger and better is what allows the show to maintain its resonance through the decades. Runyon himself was a self-made man whose bootstrap dreamer narrative is not dissimilar to that of current theatre impresario Lin-Manuel Miranda. Both men are responsible for prevailing narratives that sing the praises of New York’s “young, scrappy and hungry,” and their themes resound in the stories of gangsters and revolutionaries alike, each relying on gumption and selfdetermination to see them through. The stage musical Guys and Dolls was written in the post-war optimism of the 1950s, where the American Dream was defined by wholesome morals and domesticity. Runyon’s themes of resilience and resourcefulness rang truer than ever, and the romantic sentiments encapsulated in the musical’s love stories speak to the nation’s emphasis on home life. In a story that is gendered down to its very title, the complex relationships of men and women in Guys and Dolls are its lifeblood. The men we meet are not the hardened gangsters of Scorsese’s Boardwalk Empire nor macho cartoonish buffoons, but charming, charismatic dreamers down on their luck. Their masculinity is present but not overpowering and compliments their female counterparts, who possess a surprising degree of agency considering the traditional narrative scope within which they reside. The trope of the transformative power of a woman’s love is certainly at play, but our two female heroines arrive at their domestic bliss on their own terms. These two very different independent women own their respective careers and sexuality, embrace change, and stand their ground to get what they want. They may desire their men, but they certainly do not need them. Quintessentially American in spirit, Guys and Dolls remains a timeless tale that owes its longevity not only to its multitude of memorable characters and hummable tunes, but also to its enduring themes of ambition, savvy and selfmade luck. These ideals are whimsical affirmations of our foundational national principles in any era.

DISCOVER MORE: DAMON RUNYON Damon Runyon was an American journalist and short-story writer, best known for crafting the popular perception of New York City during the 1930s and 40s. Runyon was fascinated with the seedy-underbelly of prohibition in America and not only humanized his gangster characters, but glamorized them. It was his short story “The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown” combined with elements from his other works that inspired the world and characters of Guys and Dolls. To say Runyon’s short stories were massively successful is an understatement. His characters were so distinctly characterized by their unique slang that it became classified as its own language known as Runyonese.

About the Patrons Association The Patrons Association was established to support the students, faculty, and staff at the School of Theatre by promoting activities that enrich the School and the cultural life of our community. Founded in 1970, the Patrons Association and its 300 members provide a valuable link between the School and the community, and help to ensure the best possible theatrical entertainment for Tallahassee. The Patrons Association provides support for student scholarships as well as valuable assistance to support performances and programs that enrich the lives of all students and community members. This year, the Patrons Association raised more than $38,000 towards student scholarships and recruitment. We believe that with your involvement, we can further enrich the lives of our students and community members by providing an outstanding theatre experience, community programming and outreach, student and faculty enhancement, increase national student recruitment efforts, and support visiting guest artists through Patron supported and sponsored annual fundraising efforts and events.
Patrons Scholar Spotlight: Jessica Barthle After five years at Florida State, Jessica Barthle is excited to graduate with a Bachelors in Theatre, a Bachelors in Studio Art, and a Masters in Art Education. She has gained valuable experience as a costume designer, stitcher, and wardrobe supervisor while working with the School of Theatre and the College of Music’s Opera department. She looks forward to applying her experience as a theatre technician and artist by pursuing a career as a high school art and theatre teacher. Jessica also hopes to bring what she has learned to the deaf community by continuing on to a Doctorate in Deaf Education. To the Patrons, Jessica would like to say “Every contribution you make matters. This scholarship is why I am able to pursue my dreams and my passions in life. You are making an incredible difference in the lives of so many.”
