The School of Theatre at Florida State As one of the top-tier theatre training programs in the nation, the School of Theatre at Florida State provides its students with a wide variety of theatrical and educational opportunities. The primary mission of the School of Theatre is to offer students a comprehensive education in theatre and to prepare emerging artists to enter the professional theatre industry. As a result, the School of Theatre provides both student artists and community audience members a diverse array of productions that explore the spectrum of our shared humanity. Founded in 1973 under the vision and leadership of then-Dean Richard G. Fallon, the School of Theatre enjoys a national reputation, in large part, because of the excellence of its undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as a gifted faculty of nationally recognized professional artists/ educators. The London Theatre Studies program, the chance to work side by side with guest artists and eminent scholars, as well as showcase opportunities in New York City and Los Angeles are just a few of the many reasons why students are attracted to our various professional and academic degrees from all over the United States, many foreign countries, and every county in Florida. Alumni of the program include Broadway stars Christiani Pitts, Montego Glover, and Leslie Flesner, television producer Steven Sears, Emmy Award-winners John Papsidera and John Brace, Broadway producers Heather Provost and Darren Bagert, Playwright and Professor Suzan Zeder, and a host of talented entertainment industry professionals. Through their creative work, research, publication, and service, School of Theatre alumni contribute to the commercial, educational, and cultural life of the citizens of Florida and the nation. The School of Theatre at Florida State is a member of the University/Resident Theatre Association, Inc. and is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre.

Hair for Edna, Tracy, & Velma designed and built by Tampa Famous Wig Co.
From the Director, Jessica Lea Patty We take you back to 1962, Baltimore, Maryland. A time where hair was high, television was breaking new ground, and segregation was the norm. The power of television and advertising was unstoppable as people craved the newest fashions, freshest sounds, and breaking socio-cultural news. This new way of marketing was hard at work to create “The American Dream”. But what was portrayed on TV did not reflect what was actually happening in society. Cue our protagonist, Tracy Turnblad, a trendsetter like no other with her love for life and acceptance for all. She fights against the norm to bring people of all shapes, sizes, and color together. A heroine of the times determined not to live under the inequities and discrimination that prevailed. Tracy represents the voice of a new generation and her plight for equality still rings true today. Amidst Hairspray’s bright colors, non-stop dancing, and rockin’ tunes is a poignant and heartwarming story that speaks to the entire human race. The fact that words like equality, acceptance, integration are still such topics of debate makes 1962 seem like a not so distant past. There is no better time than now for Hairspray’s message to be seen and heard. I hope you enjoy our production of Hairspray and that our story inspires you. Tracy Turnblad says it best, “I’ll eat some breakfast, then change the world.”

From the Dramaturg, Laura London Waringer When director and provocateur John Waters first conceived of his now-cult classic 1988 film Hairspray, he had no idea it would live on in three subsequent versions: the Tony Award-winning 2002 Broadway musical, the 2007 film adaptation of the stage show, and a 2016 live broadcast television production of the musical. Hairspray has been translated to every entertainment medium, and there are many reasons its story is so beloved and worthy of its many iterations. The story’s core messages of self-love, acceptance, and social activism continue to resonate across generations. Set in 1962, Hairspray reflects a time in American history that lived on the precipice of the greatest wave of social change in the 20th century. The post-war prosperity of the 1950s propelled millions of Americans into the middle class. By the mid-1960s most working-class families could afford a car and a home fully equipped with modern appliances that included the television, which brought the outside world and its influences into every living room. The idealism and sterile conformity of the 1950s gave way to a generation gap, with the children of this Greatest Generation, later dubbed Baby Boomers, coming of age and rebelling against their parents’ traditional values. This led to the true birth of teenage culture, where American youth pioneered ways of expressing their identities through their choices in music, fashion, and yes, even hairstyles. Hairspray’s outsider ingenue Tracy Turnblad is a relatable teenager navigating a society that judges her based on her size and shape who refuses to accept limitations based on labels. With her plucky can-do attitude and natural dance ability, Tracy is able to break the mold and fulfill her dream of dancing on The Corny Collins Show, but only then does she realize the breadth of injustice and inequality faced by her African-American friends, who are barred from the show by the laws of systemic racism. Black music provided the soundtrack and inspired the dance trends for Corny Collins’ “nicest kids in town,” but black faces were nowhere to be seen on screen. Their world’s social order, just like TV, is confined to a black and white binary. Determined to fight for a technicolor utopia, Tracy finds herself in the center of the Civil Rights Movement, marching through the streets of Baltimore to integrate the program. She and her friends encounter adversity including police brutality and bigotry but persevere until they create a space where everyone who wants to dance is given the opportunity of freedom and representation. Though commonly considered a feel-good period piece, Hairspray has much to teach our current moment about the power of active allyship, positive self-image, openmindedness and respect for people of all identities. With its plus-sized heroine, emphasis on racial equality, and a leading female character (Edna) conceived to be performed by a cross-dressed male, Hairspray highlights the ways in which our popular culture tends to exclude or marginalize those who exist outside of the white cisgender mainstream. The show is enjoyable and infectiously cheerful but serves as a reminder that “dancing together” remains an ongoing project; one that requires action, awareness, and a bit of Tracy’s relentless optimism. Hairspray leaves us tapping our toes and its final words challenge us to be the change we wish to see in the world: Let’s dance!

Patrons Scholar Spotlight: Avianna Tato Avianna Tato is a junior BA Theatre student from Orlando, Florida. She is excited to appear on stage today as Tracy Turnblad in Hairspray! Her previous credits include Wanda in Wanda’s Visit and Moon in The Real Inspector Hound. She plans to move to a big city after graduation to pursue a career playing roles on Broadway. Her favorite School of Theatre memory is working on Wanda’s Visit. The members of the creative team were so supportive of her and the rest of the cast. It was a great role that gave her a lot to explore and play with. Hairspray was the first show she saw on Broadway which inspired her to follow her dreams of working in musical theatre. She would like to thank the Patrons Association for all of the opportunities this scholarship has given her. “Being a Patrons Scholar is amazing and makes me feel like I am representing my school well.” She is a first generation Cuban American and the first in her family to graduate college, so this opportunity means so much to her.
